NUSA DUA - U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to arrive in Bali on October 7 for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, Chairul Tanjung, deputy chairman of the APEC Summit organizing committee said on Thursday.

Earlier, Indonesian military sources had reported that Obama was scheduled to arrive in Bali on October 5. But his arrival has been postponed due to the current political situation in the U.S.

The BBC reported that Obama was scheduled to begin his four-nation Asian tour on Saturday, heading to Bali for the APEC Summit and Brunei for the East-Asia Summit before travelling on to Malaysia and the Philippines.

However, Obama had to postpone visits to the last two stops of his four-nation Asian tour because of the current U.S. government shutdown.

The White House said it was “logistically not possible” to go ahead with the trips to Malaysia and the Philippines at the end of the tour.

But Obama would still attend the regional summits in Indonesia and Brunei, the White House confirmed.

The U.S. government has partially shut down after the two houses of Congress failed to agree on the new budget.

More than 700,000 federal employees face unpaid leave, and national parks, museums and many buildings have been closed.

LOS ANGELES — A jury cleared a concert promoter of negligence on Wednesday in a case that attempted to link the death of Michael Jackson to the company that promoted his ill-fated comeback shows.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The government utilized the Asia-Pacific Economic Corpora-tion (APEC) forum to promote young entrepreneurs of Indonesia through the event entitled the ‘APEC Unthinkable Week 2013.’ The event aims to take advantage of the crowds and the diversity of the APEC participants to encour-age young entrepreneurs.

Deputy Minister of Commerce and Entrepreneurship, Minis-try of Economic Affairs, Edy Putra Irrawaddy, accompanied by Chairman of the National Coordination Team for Creative Entrepreneurial Development,

Dr. Handito Joewono, in a press conference on Wednesday (Oct 2) stated the activity taking place on October 2-5 at the Discovery Kuta Bali would feature the Young Entrepreneur Business Model Competition followed by 226 registered participants, and 43 participants from 20 APEC countries.

“In the APEC meeting this time, we enliven to promote the national entrepreneurship development. Moreover, we will also encourage the young entre-preneurs of Indonesia to learn cooperating with the entrepre-neurs from the APEC member countries,” he said.

Edy said there were three major ways to disseminate and promote the entrepreneurial development in the series of the agenda, namely the APEC En-trepreneur Jamboree, the APEC Creative Expo and the APEC Sound and Motion Festival.

Cooperation (APEC) forum will create a favorable momentum for Indonesia to attract investment in the country’s renewable energy sector, chief of the Renewable Energy Society (METI) Rachmat Gobel said.

“We want to use the APEC forum to attract foreign investment,” he stated on the sidelines of the APEC Conference on the Clean, Renew-able, and Sustainable Use of Energy in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Wednesday.

The APEC Summit in Bali on Oct. 7 and 8 is expected to see attendance from as many as 21 heads of state and government.

It will be preceded by a CEO summit, which anticipates attendance from 1.2 thousand busi-nessmen and 11 heads of state and government.

The high number of international business-men and state leaders attending the meeting will send a positive signal to investors with an interest in the country’s renewable energy sector, he claimed.

But, he added, since Indonesia will hold elections in 2014, the government should ensure the provision of a conducive invest-ment climate.

“I believe businessmen still have to wait and see. We must not remain silent but must make every effort to help the government cre-ate optimism,” he noted.

Rachmat said businessmen wanted legal certainty on investment opportunities in In-donesia, particularly during the lead-up to the 2014 elections.

“Next year, we will hold the elections. Concerns are growing over whether (the government) will continue to focus on re-solving the problems facing businessmen,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, state oil and gas company PT Pertamina has asked investors from the APEC region to invest in the country’s renewable energy sector.

“We are open to working with investors from the APEC region who want to invest in renewable energy in Indonesia,” Pertamina’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategic Growth, Gigih Prakoso stated at the APEC Conference.

Prakoso pointed out that Indonesia pos-sessed considerable renewable energy re-sources, and therefore, Pertamina could not work alone to tap into them.

He also identified geothermal energy, bio-fuel, wind energy, and solar cells as examples of renewable energy products that could be developed in Indonesia.

Geothermal projects in various parts of the Java and Sulawesi Islands would need an investment of some US$1 billion over a five-year period, Prakoso claimed.

He added that investment in renewable energy was currently of great importance be-cause the total production of fossil oil at home has declined significantly since 2009.

Prakoso also noted that the total production of fossil oil in 2009 had touched 946 barrels per day, but the amount was predicted to con-tinue dropping until it reaches 390 barrels per day by 2020.

According to the Foreign Affairs Min-istry’s document received by Antara in Bali on Thursday, Indonesia’s initiative to establish ACT-Network (ACT-NET) is in line with the government’s policy on eradicating corruption as well as enhancing formal and informal cooperation with the legal forces of APEC economies.

ACT-NET will focus on the authorities or corruption eradication agencies in each economy, to ease the investigation and proceeding processes.

APEC economies have agreed to sup-

port this initiative since corruption not only affects social and economic development, but also decreases the trust of the public and investors. It also damages healthy market competition, threatens consumer safety and increases the cost of business, public service and infrastructure projects.

The ACT-NET was established in 2005 and changed to ACT Working Group (ACTWG) in 2011, as a forum to sharing experiences and practices in anti-corruption efforts among the APEC members.

Indonesia was chosen as the chair of

ACTWG in 2013. During its chairman-ship, Indonesia has initiated ACT-NET as a network for legal forces, investigators, prosecutors, and related authorities to get the reciprocal legal aid and extradition among the APEC members.

APEC Summit 2013 is being held in Bali from October 1 to 8, including some related meetings, such as the Concluding Senior Official Meeting (CSOM), APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM), ABAC CEO Summit, and APEC Economic Leaders meeting.

According to him, the organizing committee has checked the prepara-tions for the summit ranging from the welcoming ceremony for state officials

at Ngurah Rai International Airport to the arrangements at the conference venue where heads of state will stay.

As many as 21 leaders of APEC are expected to assemble here on Oct. 7 and 8, 2013.

“We have conducted an evaluation meeting in preparation for the APEC summit. Based on our inspection, (we have found) all facilities including the conference venues are ready, as ex-pected,” Tanjung noted after inspecting

the Media Centre at Bali Nusa Dua Con-vention Centre (BMDCC), the venue of the summit.

The national committee for the APEC Summit has confirmed US President Ba-rack Obama`s attendance at the meeting.

“As of today, Wednesday (Oct. 2), his participation in the meeting has been confirmed,” stated Tanjung.

Tanjung, however, said the committee would be monitoring the schedule for the US President’s arrival.

There was a dark fountain and a nightmarish carousel featuring inky, surreal-looking horses. There was a twin escalator and a luxury hotel elevator. And there was the universe of clothes in all-black.

The decor was like a greatest hits collection that fused elements of past shows with the present one, tracing designer Marc Jacobs’ influential 16-year reign at the house.

Shortly after the show at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the visual metaphor was explained: LVMH announced that Jacobs was stepping down as creative director of its flagship brand. So Ja-cobs’ ready-to-wear collection for the storied house looked like a funeral for a reason.

The dark show came on the final day of a fashion week that saw de-signers channel black and white but also other, sometimes colorful trends. Looks on high rotation included: tribal African, ethnic pattern prints, multitudinous pleats, metallic sheen and revealing micro mini crop tops. Mid-blue was a particularly favored color.

And while Louis Vuitton shows

are often extravagant and can use sets that cost millions of euros, the less well-off had options, too, during this year’s fashion week. An initiative in recent years called the “Designer’s Apartment” provided showroom spaces for top young designers such as Aganovich, Monographie and Le Moine Tricote. Still, it was the well-established heavy hitters who drew the most attention.

The 41-piece display — which used embroidered black silk stock-ings, Eisenhower jackets embellished cabaret-style with large feathered shoulders, dark appliqued embroider-ies, smoking jackets and some 1940s baggy, blue jeans — was a study in noir.

The glimmering catwalk landscape was towered over by a huge clock, whose arms, instead of going forward, went back in time nostalgically.

“We went back and used all the different bits of the sets of the past,” Jacobs explained backstage. The clothes, too, went back in time.

Floor-length, thick Edwardian dresses and large proportions in the sleeves fused with black decorative corset details that evoked the fashions of the 1900s, and contrasted with the more revealing “showgirl” looks.

They were inspired by singers such as Cher, whose look from the “Take Me Home” days was evoked in many ensembles. But at moments it felt as if some looks belonged more to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci.

In the program notes, Jacobs en-closed a message evoking a farewell to LVMH’s chief executive: “For. Ber-nard Arnault. All my love, always.”

But it was the standing ovation from Anna Wintour that said the most. Such rare, visible acclaim from the powerful U.S. Vogue editor — to whom he partly dedicated the show — was a poignant cap to his tenure.

Glenda Bailey, the influential U.S. editor of Harper’s Bazaar, said the show signaled the “end of an era.”

“Watching the show was like see-ing your life flash before your eyes, because there were so many memo-rable moments referenced,” she told The Associated Press.

NEW YORK — It didn’t take long to see how a computerized wristwatch might help manage my digital life — or to see how Samsung’s new Galaxy Gear smartwatch falls short.

First, the potential: Smartwatches are supposed to offer quick access to many of the things you normally do on your phone, such as checking messages, tak-ing photos, checking the weather and answering calls. You can install apps for additional functionality that lets you track fitness activities and play games. It’s like having the power of your smartphone on your wrist.

That sounds great in principle. These gadgets aren’t meant to replace phones; they’re supposed to work with phones to display the information you need most. While I’m wearing the Galaxy Gear, I can glance at my wrist for messages during dinner or at a movie, as if I’m checking the time. It’s not so obvious that I’m be-ing rude, the way pulling out a phone would be.

Samsung’s Gear is stylish. Its 1.6-inch (4-centimeter) screen, measured diago-

nally, keeps the watch small enough — at least for men — to work as a fashion accessory. Straps come in six colors. For now, the Gear works only with the new 5.7-inch (14.5-centimeter) Galaxy Note 3 phone. Both started shipping in the U.S. on Tuesday.

The Gear costs about $300 and the Note 3 another $300, with a two-year service agreement. Although the Gear works with a cellular version of a new Galaxy Note tablet, Samsung is selling only a Wi-Fi version in the U.S. for now, starting Oct. 10 for $550. So until Sam-sung updates the software on its older phones, you need to buy both the Gear and the Note 3. For $600, this better do a lot to manage my digital life.

I took the Gear to a street fair in Brook-lyn and tried to use it to meet up with my brother and two groups of friends. I was able to read text messages and reply to a few using voice dictation. But the voice-command service is slow and makes many transcription errors. It also doesn’t give me enough time to read and confirm what I’m about to send, forcing me to start over. After a few attempts, I took out the phone and started replying the normal way.

Obama is scheduled to leave Saturday night on what originally was a four-nation tour. But the White House has called off the fi-nal two stops in Malaysia and the Philippines and is re-evaluating the stops in Indonesia and Brunei, where Obama is to participate in regional economic forums.

“We intend to have the presi-dent...make that trip because it is important,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said Wednes-day. “We’ll obviously evaluate this as each day goes by.”

The shutdown took effect early Tuesday after Congress missed its deadline to fund the government.

National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said that since Malaysia and the Philippines were “on the back end of the president’s” trip, per-

sonnel was not yet in place and “we were not able to go forward with planning.”

She blamed the cancellation on “House Republicans forcing a shutdown of the government.” “This completely avoidable shut-down is setting back our abil-ity to promote U.S. exports and advance U.S. leadership in the largest emerging region in the world,” Hayden said.

The White House said Obama spoke by telephone Tuesday with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to tell them he wouldn’t be coming next week and to commit to visiting both countries later in his term.

The prime minister said he un-derstood. “If I were in his shoes, I would do the same,” Najib said in Kuala Lumpur.

From Manila, Aquino spokes-man Ricky Carandang also said Obama’s decision was under-standable. He said he looked forward to welcoming Obama “at a more opportune time.”

Mike Green, senior vice presi-dent for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Stud-ies, described scrapping the stops in Malaysia and the Philippines as a blow to both countries and a loss for Obama at a time when the administration’s much talked about “pivot” to Asia is being questioned in the region. London - A portrait of Nelson Mandela by British artist Richard Stone and a portrayal of him playing the role of Jesus at the Last Supper are some of the works on display in London’s “We Love Mandela” exhibition.

Some 22 artists, all South African with the exception of Stone, are displaying around 50 works reflecting the “emotions of people”, their feelings and ideas about South Africa’s first black president, exhibition curator Natalie Knight told AFP. Many of the artists showcased were forced to work underground during the era of apartheid.

Peace icon Mandela featured “at the top” of the list of person-alities whom Stone, portraitist of Queen Elizabeth II and former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, wanted to paint.

“It was the most daunting experience I had ever had” and also “the greatest privilege”, the artist told AFP. “Here we have quite possibly the most famous man on the planet,” he said. “My goal was to capture something of the soul of this very great man.”

Stone recalled how Mandela “allowed a little window to be open into his soul” during the six sittings which took place in his Johannesburg office in 2008.

The painting, which features a dignified white-haired Mandela wearing one of his trademark colourful shirts, was sold at auction in 2008 for around 480,000 euros ($650,000) during a London concert celebrating his 90th birthday.

The exhibition gives equal billing to numerous cartoons by South African animator Zapiro, one of which shows Mandela sat in a carriage next to the queen as they travel through the streets of London.

The complainant told police on Tuesday afternoon that she had just arrived at her villa from Denpasar. She would like to visit her villa as it had long been abandoned. Once she came into the bathroom, she was surprised because the stone used to put shampoo was broken. She believed the stone was broken by someone coming into the bathroom without permission. The bathroom door was found open. However, she said no valuables were missing.

The Operations Division Head of Karan-gasem Police AA Gede Mudita said on Wednesday (Oct 1) in his office that his staff had received the report. Police had in-vestigated the perpetrator breaking in to the bathroom owned by the complainant without permission. Police Narcotics Section managed to arrest 16 drug abuse perpetrators. However, the of-ficers of the Narcotics Section Chief I Wayan Suarda then captured another suspect. The suspect named Kadek Swandika Wijaya, 33, a resident from Bantang hamlet, Bantang village, Kintamani, Bangli.

The suspect was arrested around Jalan Cekomaria Gang I/4A Denpasar, Sunday (Se 29) at 00:30 a.m. From the suspect, police seized the evidence in the form of two plastic bags alleged to contain crystal meth (SS). Each plastic bag contained 0.31 gram and 0.23 gram of the crystal meth, a glass pipe and a black waist bag.

Information at police station on Wednes-day (Oct 2) mentioned the arrest of the sus-pect was based on the public report where the suspect was told to frequently bring crystal meth. Based on the information, po-lice conducted an investigation in the field. Eventually, the suspect was arrested at the scene without resistance.

LONDON — Another round of eurozone economic data Thursday provided compelling evidence that the currency bloc’s recovery from recession has become broad-based and self-sustaining.

Particularly encouraging was the news that retail sales across the 17 European Union countries that use the euro rose by a forecast-busting 0.7 percent in August, accord-ing to Eurostat, the EU’s statistics office.

That added to the previous month’s 0.5 percent increase — itself revised higher — and was above market expecta-tions for a more modest 0.2 percent increase.

Retail sales are an important barometer of economic confidence as they show that consumers are more willing to spend rather than save for a rainy day.

The figures came on the heels of a closely-watched sur-vey finding economic output across the eurozone rose in September at its fastest pace since the summer of 2011.

Financial information company Markit said its com-posite purchasing managers index — a broad gauge of business activity across the manufacturing and services sectors — rose to a 27-month high of 52.2 points in Sep-tember. The increase from 51.5 in August takes the index further above the 50 threshold that indicates expansion.

Thursday’s surveys are the latest in a string of indica-tors to suggest the eurozone economic recovery is gather-ing momentum. Earlier this week, Eurostat figures showed the number of unemployed fell for the third consecutive month in August, though the rate held steady.

In the second quarter, the eurozone economy grew by a quarterly rate of 0.3 percent, following a run of six straight quarterly declines, which marked the longest recession since the euro currency was launched in 1999.

The improving economic signs also help explain why the European Central Bank opted against doing anything more to shore up the recovery at Wednesday’s policy meeting.

Obama said he was “exasperated” by the budget impasse in Congress, in an interview with CNBC apparently designed to pressure Republicans by targeting the financial commu-nity moments after markets closed.

The president then met Republican and Democratic lead-ers for their first talks since the US government money’s ran out and it slumped into a shutdown now well into its second day.

But few informed observers held out much hope for a sudden breakthrough.

Obama was asked in the interview whether Washington was simply gripped by just the latest in a series of politi-cal and fiscal crises which reliably get solved at the last minute.

In unusually frank comments on issues that could sway markets, Obama warned that investors should be worried.

“This time’s different. I think they should be concerned,” Obama said, in comments which may roil global markets.

“When you have a situation in which a faction is willing potentially to default on US government obligations, then we are in trouble,” Obama said.

Obama said he would not negotiate with Republicans on budget matters until House lawmakers pass a temporary financing bill to reopen federal operations and raised the $16.7 trillion dollar debt ceiling.

If the borrowing limit is not lifted by the middle of the month, the US government could default on its debts for the first time in history.“If and when ... that vote takes place and the government reopens, and if and when they vote to make sure Congress pays our bills on time so America does not default on costs it’s already accrued, then I am prepared to have a reasonable, civil negotiation around a whole slew of issues,” Obama said.

The president said he had “bent over backwards” to accommodate Republicans -- a statement his foes would dispute -- but warned it would set a terrible precedent to allow lawmakers of any party to hold a White House to ransom over raising the debt ceiling.

“Absolutely I am exasperated, because this is entirely unnecessary,” Obama said.

The government shutdown has sent 800,000 federal work-ers home, closed museums, national parks and monuments and crippled government services.

Goldman Sachs boss Lloyd Blankfein warned that America was getting onto dangerous ground by flirt-ing with not raising the debt ceiling. A previous period of brinkmanship on the issue badly hit the US credit rating.

“There’s a precedent for a government shutdown, there’s no precedent for a default,” he said after meeting Obama.

Furious tourists meanwhile are locked out of Washington museums and monuments, as well as national parks and landmarks like the Statue of Liberty in New York. Cancer research and treatment at the world-class National Institutes of Health has ground to a halt.

Beyond the major market focus of foreign tourists, a significant increase was also con-tributed by tourists from Middle East whose increase was more than three times higher than in August 2012. For example, tourist from Saudi Arabia showed an increase of 238.46 percent, from 6,071 people in August 2012 to 20,548 people in August 2013. For the European market, the largest increase was contributed by the number of tourist from Russia rising 35.86 percent or 5,047 people in August 2012 to 7,346 people.

Mari Pangestu added that MICE tourism had a major contribution in increasing the number of tourist arrival in recent months.

In August 2013, there was a big event such as the Congress of Indonesian Diaspora II, shooting of Hollywood film and some world musician concerts in various cities in Indo-nesia. In addition, a series of APEC meetings and supporting activities ahead of the APEC Summit 2013 taking place in October were also essential to boost the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia.

Moreover, he said, their presence did not give the maximal contribution to common people, so the growth cre-ated would be in vain. “A good growth happens if it can generate equity and the gap is not too wide. The growth must not only be enjoyed by people in Southern Bali, but must also be enjoyed by people of North and East Bali,” he explained.

According to him, black investors did not pay attention to religion, customs, culture, social aspect and environment. This type of capitalist was definitely far worse than the money laundering earlier. It could be imagined that armed with the power of money at hand the investor could control everything.

“They closed the eyes and ears for such things. As a result, in the long term and even short-term, all unique and distinct natures and cultures can be eroded to destruction,” he said.

He assessed the culture and nature at hand posed the capital that was not owned by other regions in Indonesia. Therefore, the investors vied to see the opportunities available. However, the incoming investors were not entirely pure investors (white investors) that wanted to build Bali.

“Many parties suspect that black investors also invest their capital in the middle of the hustles and bustles of Bali’s economic progress,” he said.

He added many ways were under-taken by black investors to streamline their business. For example, those that committed money laundering, as the results of crime where one of which was corruption, invested in Bali. Proceeds of their crime were invested for hotel de-velopment, construction of tourist sup-porting facilities or other investments.

“Their money is not through bank transfer, but brought in cash. Thus, it was difficult to detect the transfer via bank. For example, a hotel built in expensive area can offer very cheap room rate. and therefore, it is necessary to increase cooperation with the Asian Develop-ment Bank (ADB) in various fields, according to President of ADB Takehiko Nakao.

“Indonesia has an important role in ASEAN and ASEAN plus three, and it plays a crucial role as an emerging economy,” Nakao said at a press confer-ence at the presidential office after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday.

The ADB president noted that he met President Yudhoyono to discuss In-donesia’s role in G20 and the agenda that would be raised by Indonesia in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Bali.

“We discussed many issues, including Indonesia’s leadership in various in-ternational economic forums. President Yudhoyono also mentioned Indonesia’s role in G20 and the meeting of APEC leaders in Bali next week,” he said.

According to Nakao, ADB has prepared “standby trade financing sup-port.”

Meanwhile, presidential special staff for economic affairs Firmanzah said during the one-hour meeting, President Yudhoyono emphasised that Indonesia and ADB are important partners.

Indonesia and ADB are cooperating in various sectors, among others, energy, clean water facility, infrastructure development, and human resources development.

“President Yudhoyono believes that it is important to strengthen the partner-ship between Indonesia and the ADB,” Firmanzah said.

It was the latest high-profile cor-ruption case in one of the world’s most graft-ridden countries, and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ex-pressed shock in rare public comments on the issue.

“I can feel the anger and shock shared by the Indonesian people,” he said.

Chief Justice Akil Mochtar was detained late Wednesday at his Ja-karta home shortly after a business-man and lawmaker allegedly handed him around three billion rupiah, said Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesman Johan Budi.

“The bribery was allegedly linked to a disputed election in Gunung Mas district on Borneo island,” said Budi.

The election was held on Septem-ber 4. One of the constitutional court’s main roles is to decide on electoral disputes.The lawmaker, a member of the Golkar party of former dictator Suharto, and businessman were also detained at Mochtar’s house, he said.

Mochtar’s arrest followed the de-tention in August of the country’s chief energy regulator Rudi Rubiandini and after several members of the presi-dent’s Democratic Party were caught up in corruption scandals.

However Mochtar is a former Golkar party member. Golkar is in the current ruling coalition but seen as one of the main opponents to Yudhoyono’s party at upcoming elections.

Rubiandini, head of upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas, was detained at his Jakarta home for al-legedly accepting more than $600,000 in bribes.

In the past year, the president’s party has been hit by a flood of cor-ruption scandals that analysts say

have seriously undermined the party’s prospects at elections in 2014.

The party’s chairman, treasurer and sports minister have all been caught up in in graft scandals -- an embar-rassment for Yudhoyono as he won a second term in 2009 partly on a pledge to fight corruption.

The KPK has been granted extraor-dinary powers to investigate the rich and powerful in Indonesia, including wiretapping suspects and probing bank accounts.

But they face an uphill battle in a nation ranked 118th out of 176 in Transparency International’s list of least corrupt countries.

They have enjoyed some notable successes however, such as the jailing earlier this month of the former traffic police chief for 10 years after he built up an $18 million empire by accepting enormous bribes.

During the event, President Yudhoyono and President Xi Jinping witnessed the signing of 21 business agreements.

The total value of the business agreements was US$28.2 billion for invest-ments in the fields of mineral, pulp, property, railway, infrastructure, and cement, noted Minister MS Hidayat.

The agreements would strengthen bilateral economic cooperation between the two nations, he added.

Xi Jinping is on a two-day state visit to Jakarta to boost bilateral economic and investment cooperation between the two nations.

It is Xi Jinping’s first visit to a Southeast Asian country since he assumed his presidency in March. He will then travel to Malaysia before heading back to the Indonesian resort island of Bali for an APEC meeting.

During the bilateral meeting on Wednesday, the two leaders agreed to up-grade the bilateral cooperation of the two countries to comprehensive strategic partnership in various fields.

“We have once again made history by agreeing to forge a comprehensive strategic partnership. I believe that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, we will be able to improve our bilateral cooperation,” said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at a joint press conference with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Merdeka Palace here on Wednesday.

revive Italy’s economy. And while Berlusconi was left bruised and bat-tered, political analysts argue he is not yet out of the picture.

“Berlusconi is not finished,” said Roberto D’Alimonte of Rome’s LU-ISS University. “This is another step toward the end, but it is not the end yet. The end will come with a major electoral defeat.

“He has great resources. He has media resources, financial resources, the resources of the 6 or 7 million voters who will follow him down the abyss. That is why he cannot be counted out, even with his options being closed.”

Whether Berlusconi can ever again face the electorate is far from certain because his judicial woes are narrow-ing his ability to maneuver.

His appeals over his tax fraud con-viction were exhausted this summer, and he now faces a prison term, the loss of his Senate seat and a political ban that will bar him from running in new elections.

Berlusconi’s theatrics — pushing for the government to fall, then sav-ing it at the last minute — are a sign of the nervousness provoked by his

judicial woes, said Giuseppe Orsina, a political scientist who this summer published a book about Berlusconi’s influence in Italy.

“This is another paradox,” Orsina said. “It wasn’t in his interest to make the government fall, from the point of view of his companies, and it was not politically rational. It was rational in the protection of his honor ... It was an act of political pride.”

Despite being weakened, Orsina said Berlusconi “remains a protagonist in the political life. Today he suffered a defeat that is the first in the history of his party.”

A Senate committee is due to vote in the coming days on whether to recommend stripping Berlusconi of his seat following his conviction of tax fraud and its four-year sentence. A 2012 law bans anyone sentenced to more than two years in prison from holding or running for public office for six years.

Separately, a Milan appeals court will decide later this month on the exact length of a political ban, from one to three years, that was included alongside the four-year sentence in the tax fraud case.

TRIPOLI, Libya — An armed mob broke into the Russian Embassy compound in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Wednesday, climbing over walls, breaking down a metal gate and shooting in the air. One of the attackers was killed by the gunfire, and four more were wounded, Libyan officials said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the attack and said none of the embassy staff was wounded. Libyan officials said they believed the break-in was in response to the death of a Libyan air force pilot, who they said was killed by a Russian woman.

Wednesday’s violence briefly raised fears of a repeat of last year’s deadly attack on a U.S. compound in the eastern city of Benghazi, in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Ameri-cans were killed. In that instance, on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attack, militants fired mortars at the consulate, surrounded it and set it on fire.

The Libyan official said Wednesday’s attackers took down the Russian flag that was hanging from the balcony of one of the buildings. But they did not enter the embassy buildings, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Ekho Moskvy radio that according to preliminary information no one among the embassy personnel was wounded.

The attackers were apparently reacting to the killing of a Libyan air force pilot Tuesday. Libyan authorities arrested a Rus-sian woman and accused her of killing him and writing offensive graffiti in his blood. The woman also is accused of stabbing and wounding the pilot’s mother.

Authorities said they did not know what the woman’s motives might be, but noted that in the graffiti on the walls, she expressed sentiments against the Libyan uprising that drove longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi from power after an eight-month civil war in 2011.

Libya has been hit by a months-long wave of targeted killings against activists, judges and security agents.

On Wednesday, gunmen in Benghazi shot dead a naval officer and his 7-year-old son before fleeing the scene. Most killings are presumed to be the work of armed factions, often acting out of revenge.

TORONTO — Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said Wednesday he’s surprised and shocked his friend and occasional driver has been arrested on drug charges. Alexander Lisi, 35, has been charged with trafficking and possession of marijuana, Toronto police say.

Ford grabbed international attention earlier this year over al-legations that he was caught on video smoking crack cocaine. The AP has not seen the video and it has not been released publicly. Ford has said the video does not exist.

Ford acknowledged Lisi is a friend and said he doesn’t aban-don his friends. “He’s a friend. He’s a good guy. I don’t throw my friends under the bus, Ford said. “I’ve never once seen him drink. I’ve never seen him once do drugs so I’m surprised. I’m actually shocked,”

He refused to comment further on Lisi’s arrest, saying the mat-ter is before the courts.

UEFA says the automatic one-match suspension after his sending off for “pester-ing a match official” has been increased to a two-match sanc-tion.

Klopp angrily confronted the fourth official during Dort-mund’s 2-1 defeat at Napoli on Sept. 18.

The German coach served the first match of his sanction during Dortmund’s 3-0 victory against Marseille on Tuesday.

And we have just scratched the surface.”

The schedule opens Saturday with Oklahoma City playing Turkey’s Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul, where Kevin Durant was MVP of the world basketball cham-pionship in 2010. Philadelphia plays the next day at Bilbao, Spain, a host site for next summer’s renamed World Cup of Basketball.

The Thunder then meet the 76ers on Oct. 8 in Manchester, England, before Indiana and Houston face each other in the Philippines and Taiwan — the latter the home country of Rockets guard Jeremy Lin’s parents.

“I have no idea what to expect,” Lin said. “It’s a preseason game, so you never really know what’s going to happen in terms of the plan or minutes or whatever. After open training sessions in front of numerous media on Wednesday, Klitschko (60-3, 51 KO) said he came to Moscow to win any way he could. “That’s what I will do on Oct. 5,” Klitschko said. “Believe me, I will do everything for my victory.”

He hasn’t lost or drawn a fight and was never knocked down,” Klitschko said. “So, I think the night will be a complicated one — for those who will watch, as well as for Alexander and me. “Indonesia has an important role in ASEAN and ASEAN plus three, and it plays a crucial role as an emerging economy,” Nakao said at a press confer-ence at the presidential office after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday.

The ADB president noted that he met President Yudhoyono to discuss In-donesia’s role in G20 and the agenda that would be raised by Indonesia in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Bali.

“We discussed many issues, including Indonesia’s leadership in various in-ternational economic forums. President Yudhoyono also mentioned Indonesia’s role in G20 and the meeting of APEC leaders in Bali next week,” he said.

According to Nakao, ADB has prepared “standby trade financing sup-port.”

Meanwhile, presidential special staff for economic affairs Firmanzah said during the one-hour meeting, President Yudhoyono emphasised that Indonesia and ADB are important partners.

Indonesia and ADB are cooperating in various sectors, among others, energy, clean water facility, infrastructure development, and human resources development.

“President Yudhoyono believes that it is important to strengthen the partner-ship between Indonesia and the ADB,” Firmanzah said.

It was the latest high-profile cor-ruption case in one of the world’s most graft-ridden countries, and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ex-pressed shock in rare public comments on the issue.

“I can feel the anger and shock shared by the Indonesian people,” he said.

Chief Justice Akil Mochtar was detained late Wednesday at his Ja-karta home shortly after a business-man and lawmaker allegedly handed him around three billion rupiah, said Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesman Johan Budi.

“The bribery was allegedly linked to a disputed election in Gunung Mas district on Borneo island,” said Budi.

The election was held on Septem-ber 4. One of the constitutional court’s main roles is to decide on electoral disputes.The lawmaker, a member of the Golkar party of former dictator Suharto, and businessman were also detained at Mochtar’s house, he said.

The head of Gunung Mas district and another man were arrested at a Jakarta hotel soon afterwards, added Budi.“The questioning of the five men

is still under way,” he added.Yudhoyono said that constitutional

court judges “have a very important role. They are required to have high integrity and are also expected to have the capacity to decide disputes properly.

Mochtar’s arrest followed the de-tention in August of the country’s chief energy regulator Rudi Rubiandini and after several members of the presi-dent’s Democratic Party were caught up in corruption scandals.

However Mochtar is a former Golkar party member. Golkar is in the current ruling coalition but seen as one of the main opponents to Yudhoyono’s party at upcoming elections.

Rubiandini, head of upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas, was detained at his Jakarta home for al-legedly accepting more than $600,000 in bribes.

In the past year, the president’s party has been hit by a flood of cor-ruption scandals that analysts say

have seriously undermined the party’s prospects at elections in 2014.

The party’s chairman, treasurer and sports minister have all been caught up in in graft scandals -- an embar-rassment for Yudhoyono as he won a second term in 2009 partly on a pledge to fight corruption.

The KPK has been granted extraor-dinary powers to investigate the rich and powerful in Indonesia, including wiretapping suspects and probing bank accounts.

But they face an uphill battle in a nation ranked 118th out of 176 in Transparency International’s list of least corrupt countries.

They have enjoyed some notable successes however, such as the jailing earlier this month of the former traffic police chief for 10 years after he built up an $18 million empire by accepting enormous bribes.

Djoko Susilo reportedly earned a humble police salary of $1,000 a month -- but the country’s anti-graft agency seized assets from him, in-cluding houses, cars and even petrol kiosks, worth 200 billion rupiah (around $18 million).

Xi Jinping is on a two-day state visit to Jakarta to boost bilateral economic and investment cooperation between the two nations.

It is Xi Jinping’s first visit to a Southeast Asian country since he assumed his presidency in March. He will then travel to Malaysia before heading back to the Indonesian resort island of Bali for an APEC meeting.

During the bilateral meeting on Wednesday, the two leaders agreed to up-grade the bilateral cooperation of the two countries to comprehensive strategic partnership in various fields.

“We have once again made history by agreeing to forge a comprehensive strategic partnership. The 77-year-old three-time former premier staged one of Italy’s most stunning political plot twists in mem-ory on Wednesday when he took the Senate floor at the last minute to an-nounce that he would, after all, support Premier Enrico Letta’s government in a confidence vote.

It was a face-saving measure that came after key loyalists in Ber-lusconi’s center-right party refused to follow his bid to collapse the coali-tion government as fallout over his tax-fraud conviction. The conviction carries a four-year prison sentence that endangers his role as a legisla-tor. “We have decided, not without internal strife, to vote in confidence” Berlusconi said.

Though he tried to look magnani-mous, it was the billionaire media mo-gul’s first-ever defeat within the party he founded and which has achieved electoral success largely through his personal appeal.

Berlusconi’s retreat bestows a mea-sure of stability on Letta’s 5-month-old left-right coalition which won confidence votes in both houses and faces the daunting task of trying to

revive Italy’s economy. And while Berlusconi was left bruised and bat-tered, political analysts argue he is not yet out of the picture.

“Berlusconi is not finished,” said Roberto D’Alimonte of Rome’s LU-ISS University. “This is another step toward the end, but it is not the end yet. The end will come with a major electoral defeat.

“He has great resources. He has media resources, financial resources, the resources of the 6 or 7 million voters who will follow him down the abyss. That is why he cannot be counted out, even with his options being closed.”

Whether Berlusconi can ever again face the electorate is far from certain because his judicial woes are narrow-ing his ability to maneuver.

His appeals over his tax fraud con-viction were exhausted this summer, and he now faces a prison term, the loss of his Senate seat and a political ban that will bar him from running in new elections.

Berlusconi’s theatrics — pushing for the government to fall, then sav-ing it at the last minute — are a sign of the nervousness provoked by his

judicial woes, said Giuseppe Orsina, a political scientist who this summer published a book about Berlusconi’s influence in Italy.

“This is another paradox,” Orsina said. “It wasn’t in his interest to make the government fall, from the point of view of his companies, and it was not politically rational. It was rational in the protection of his honor ... It was an act of political pride.”

Despite being weakened, Orsina said Berlusconi “remains a protagonist in the political life. Today he suffered a defeat that is the first in the history of his party.”

A Senate committee is due to vote in the coming days on whether to recommend stripping Berlusconi of his seat following his conviction of tax fraud and its four-year sentence. A 2012 law bans anyone sentenced to more than two years in prison from holding or running for public office for six years.

Separately, a Milan appeals court will decide later this month on the exact length of a political ban, from one to three years, that was included alongside the four-year sentence in the tax fraud case.

TRIPOLI, Libya — An armed mob broke into the Russian Embassy compound in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Wednesday, climbing over walls, breaking down a metal gate and shooting in the air. One of the attackers was killed by the gunfire, and four more were wounded, Libyan officials said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the attack and said none of the embassy staff was wounded. Libyan officials said they believed the break-in was in response to the death of a Libyan air force pilot, who they said was killed by a Russian woman.

Wednesday’s violence briefly raised fears of a repeat of last year’s deadly attack on a U.S. compound in the eastern city of Benghazi, in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Ameri-cans were killed. In that instance, on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attack, militants fired mortars at the consulate, surrounded it and set it on fire.

The Libyan official said Wednesday’s attackers took down the Russian flag that was hanging from the balcony of one of the buildings. But they did not enter the embassy buildings, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Ekho Moskvy radio that according to preliminary information no one among the embassy personnel was wounded.

The attackers were apparently reacting to the killing of a Libyan air force pilot Tuesday. Libyan authorities arrested a Rus-sian woman and accused her of killing him and writing offensive graffiti in his blood. The woman also is accused of stabbing and wounding the pilot’s mother.

Authorities said they did not know what the woman’s motives might be, but noted that in the graffiti on the walls, she expressed sentiments against the Libyan uprising that drove longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi from power after an eight-month civil war in 2011.

Libya has been hit by a months-long wave of targeted killings against activists, judges and security agents.

On Wednesday, gunmen in Benghazi shot dead a naval officer and his 7-year-old son before fleeing the scene. Most killings are presumed to be the work of armed factions, often acting out of revenge.

TORONTO — Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said Wednesday he’s surprised and shocked his friend and occasional driver has been arrested on drug charges. Alexander Lisi, 35, has been charged with trafficking and possession of marijuana, Toronto police say.

Ford grabbed international attention earlier this year over al-legations that he was caught on video smoking crack cocaine. The AP has not seen the video and it has not been released publicly. Ford has said the video does not exist.

Ford acknowledged Lisi is a friend and said he doesn’t aban-don his friends. “He’s a friend. He’s a good guy. I don’t throw my friends under the bus, Ford said. “I’ve never once seen him drink. I’ve never seen him once do drugs so I’m surprised. I’m actually shocked,”

He refused to comment further on Lisi’s arrest, saying the mat-ter is before the courts.

LONDON — Another round of eurozone economic data Thursday provided compelling evidence that the currency bloc’s recovery from recession has become broad-based and self-sustaining.

Particularly encouraging was the news that retail sales across the 17 European Union countries that use the euro rose by a forecast-busting 0.7 percent in August, accord-ing to Eurostat, the EU’s statistics office.

That added to the previous month’s 0.5 percent increase — itself revised higher — and was above market expecta-tions for a more modest 0.2 percent increase.

Retail sales are an important barometer of economic confidence as they show that consumers are more willing to spend rather than save for a rainy day.

The figures came on the heels of a closely-watched sur-vey finding economic output across the eurozone rose in September at its fastest pace since the summer of 2011.

Financial information company Markit said its com-posite purchasing managers index — a broad gauge of business activity across the manufacturing and services sectors — rose to a 27-month high of 52.2 points in Sep-tember. The increase from 51.5 in August takes the index further above the 50 threshold that indicates expansion.

Thursday’s surveys are the latest in a string of indica-tors to suggest the eurozone economic recovery is gather-ing momentum. Earlier this week, Eurostat figures showed the number of unemployed fell for the third consecutive month in August, though the rate held steady.

In the second quarter, the eurozone economy grew by a quarterly rate of 0.3 percent, following a run of six straight quarterly declines, which marked the longest recession since the euro currency was launched in 1999.

The improving economic signs also help explain why the European Central Bank opted against doing anything more to shore up the recovery at Wednesday’s policy meeting.

Obama said he was “exasperated” by the budget impasse in Congress, in an interview with CNBC apparently designed to pressure Republicans by targeting the financial commu-nity moments after markets closed.

The president then met Republican and Democratic lead-ers for their first talks since the US government money’s ran out and it slumped into a shutdown now well into its second day.

But few informed observers held out much hope for a sudden breakthrough.

Obama was asked in the interview whether Washington was simply gripped by just the latest in a series of politi-cal and fiscal crises which reliably get solved at the last minute.

In unusually frank comments on issues that could sway markets, Obama warned that investors should be worried.

“This time’s different. I think they should be concerned,” Obama said, in comments which may roil global markets.

“When you have a situation in which a faction is willing potentially to default on US government obligations, then we are in trouble,” Obama said.

Obama said he would not negotiate with Republicans on budget matters until House lawmakers pass a temporary financing bill to reopen federal operations and raised the $16.7 trillion dollar debt ceiling.

If the borrowing limit is not lifted by the middle of the month, the US government could default on its debts for the first time in history.“If and when ... that vote takes place and the government reopens, and if and when they vote to make sure Congress pays our bills on time so America does not default on costs it’s already accrued, then I am prepared to have a reasonable, civil negotiation around a whole slew of issues,” Obama said.

The president said he had “bent over backwards” to accommodate Republicans -- a statement his foes would dispute -- but warned it would set a terrible precedent to allow lawmakers of any party to hold a White House to ransom over raising the debt ceiling.

“Absolutely I am exasperated, because this is entirely unnecessary,” Obama said.

The government shutdown has sent 800,000 federal work-ers home, closed museums, national parks and monuments and crippled government services.

Goldman Sachs boss Lloyd Blankfein warned that America was getting onto dangerous ground by flirt-ing with not raising the debt ceiling. A previous period of brinkmanship on the issue badly hit the US credit rating.

“There’s a precedent for a government shutdown, there’s no precedent for a default,” he said after meeting Obama.

Furious tourists meanwhile are locked out of Washington museums and monuments, as well as national parks and landmarks like the Statue of Liberty in New York. Cancer research and treatment at the world-class National Institutes of Health has ground to a halt.

For the European market, the largest increase was contributed by the number of tourist from Russia rising 35.86 percent or 5,047 people in August 2012 to 7,346 people.

Mari Pangestu added that MICE tourism had a major contribution in increasing the number of tourist arrival in recent months.

In August 2013, there was a big event such as the Congress of Indonesian Diaspora II, shooting of Hollywood film and some world musician concerts in various cities in Indo-nesia. In addition, a series of APEC meetings and supporting activities ahead of the APEC Summit 2013 taking place in October were also essential to boost the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia.

For example, those that committed money laundering, as the results of crime where one of which was corruption, invested in Bali. Proceeds of their crime were invested for hotel de-velopment, construction of tourist sup-porting facilities or other investments.

“Their money is not through bank transfer, but brought in cash. Thus, it was difficult to detect the transfer via bank. For example, a hotel built in expensive area can offer very cheap room rate. sonnel was not yet in place and “we were not able to go forward with planning.”

She blamed the cancellation on “House Republicans forcing a shutdown of the government.” “This completely avoidable shut-down is setting back our abil-ity to promote U.S. exports and advance U.S. leadership in the largest emerging region in the world,” Hayden said.

The White House said Obama spoke by telephone Tuesday with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to tell them he wouldn’t be coming next week and to commit to visiting both countries later in his term.

The prime minister said he un-derstood. “If I were in his shoes, I would do the same,” Najib said in Kuala Lumpur.

London - A portrait of Nelson Mandela by British artist Richard Stone and a portrayal of him playing the role of Jesus at the Last Supper are some of the works on display in London’s “We Love Mandela” exhibition.

Some 22 artists, all South African with the exception of Stone, are displaying around 50 works reflecting the “emotions of people”, their feelings and ideas about South Africa’s first black president, exhibition curator Natalie Knight told AFP. Many of the artists showcased were forced to work underground during the era of apartheid.

Peace icon Mandela featured “at the top” of the list of person-alities whom Stone, portraitist of Queen Elizabeth II and former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, wanted to paint.

“It was the most daunting experience I had ever had” and also “the greatest privilege”, the artist told AFP. “Here we have quite possibly the most famous man on the planet,” he said. “My goal was to capture something of the soul of this very great man.”

Stone recalled how Mandela “allowed a little window to be open into his soul” during the six sittings which took place in his Johannesburg office in 2008.

The painting, which features a dignified white-haired Mandela wearing one of his trademark colourful shirts, was sold at auction in 2008 for around 480,000 euros ($650,000) during a London concert celebrating his 90th birthday.

The exhibition gives equal billing to numerous cartoons by South African animator Zapiro, one of which shows Mandela sat in a carriage next to the queen as they travel through the streets of London.

A policeman turns to his colleague and says: “The next bloody tourist who asks who’s the little old lady with Mandela...!” For Knight, the drawing epitomises “the importance of Mandela in the world.”

Another work explores the power of Mandela’s clenched fist, the symbol of his fight against apartheid, while another imagines Mandela as the central figure at the Last Supper, surrounded by “his” disciples, including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.

The complainant told police on Tuesday afternoon that she had just arrived at her villa from Denpasar. She would like to visit her villa as it had long been abandoned. Once she came into the bathroom, she was surprised because the stone used to put shampoo was broken. She believed the stone was broken by someone coming into the bathroom without permission. The bathroom door was found open. However, she said no valuables were missing.

The Operations Division Head of Karan-gasem Police AA Gede Mudita said on Wednesday (Oct 1) in his office that his staff had received the report. Police had in-vestigated the perpetrator breaking in to the bathroom owned by the complainant without permission. Police Narcotics Section managed to arrest 16 drug abuse perpetrators. However, the of-ficers of the Narcotics Section Chief I Wayan Suarda then captured another suspect. The suspect named Kadek Swandika Wijaya, 33, a resident from Bantang hamlet, Bantang village, Kintamani, Bangli.

The suspect was arrested around Jalan Cekomaria Gang I/4A Denpasar, Sunday (Se 29) at 00:30 a.m. From the suspect, police seized the evidence in the form of two plastic bags alleged to contain crystal meth (SS). Each plastic bag contained 0.31 gram and 0.23 gram of the crystal meth, a glass pipe and a black waist bag.

Information at police station on Wednes-day (Oct 2) mentioned the arrest of the sus-pect was based on the public report where the suspect was told to frequently bring crystal meth. Based on the information, po-lice conducted an investigation in the field. Eventually, the suspect was arrested at the scene without resistance.

Chief Suarda when asked for his confir-mation on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of the suspect. His party still continued to examine the suspect to further reveal his syndicate. Cooperation (APEC) forum will create a favorable momentum for Indonesia to attract investment in the country’s renewable energy sector, chief of the Renewable Energy Society (METI) Rachmat Gobel said.

“We want to use the APEC forum to attract foreign investment,” he stated on the sidelines of the APEC Conference on the Clean, Renew-able, and Sustainable Use of Energy in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Wednesday.

The APEC Summit in Bali on Oct. 7 and 8 is expected to see attendance from as many as 21 heads of state and government.

It will be preceded by a CEO summit, which anticipates attendance from 1.2 thousand busi-nessmen and 11 heads of state and government.

The high number of international business-men and state leaders attending the meeting will send a positive signal to investors with an interest in the country’s renewable energy sector, he claimed.

But, he added, since Indonesia will hold elections in 2014, the government should ensure the provision of a conducive invest-ment climate.

“I believe businessmen still have to wait and see. We must not remain silent but must make every effort to help the government cre-ate optimism,” he noted.

Rachmat said businessmen wanted legal certainty on investment opportunities in In-donesia, particularly during the lead-up to the 2014 elections.

“Next year, we will hold the elections. Concerns are growing over whether (the government) will continue to focus on re-solving the problems facing businessmen,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, state oil and gas company PT Pertamina has asked investors from the APEC region to invest in the country’s renewable energy sector.

“We are open to working with investors from the APEC region who want to invest in renewable energy in Indonesia,” Pertamina’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategic Growth, Gigih Prakoso stated at the APEC Conference.

Prakoso pointed out that Indonesia pos-sessed considerable renewable energy re-sources, and therefore, Pertamina could not work alone to tap into them.

He also identified geothermal energy, bio-fuel, wind energy, and solar cells as examples of renewable energy products that could be developed in Indonesia.

Geothermal projects in various parts of the Java and Sulawesi Islands would need an investment of some US$1 billion over a five-year period, Prakoso claimed.

He added that investment in renewable energy was currently of great importance be-cause the total production of fossil oil at home has declined significantly since 2009.

Prakoso also noted that the total production of fossil oil in 2009 had touched 946 barrels per day, but the amount was predicted to con-tinue dropping until it reaches 390 barrels per day by 2020.

According to the Foreign Affairs Min-istry’s document received by Antara in Bali on Thursday, Indonesia’s initiative to establish ACT-Network (ACT-NET) is in line with the government’s policy on eradicating corruption as well as enhancing formal and informal cooperation with the legal forces of APEC economies.

ACT-NET will focus on the authorities or corruption eradication agencies in each economy, to ease the investigation and proceeding processes.

APEC economies have agreed to sup-

port this initiative since corruption not only affects social and economic development, but also decreases the trust of the public and investors. It also damages healthy market competition, threatens consumer safety and increases the cost of business, public service and infrastructure projects.

The ACT-NET was established in 2005 and changed to ACT Working Group (ACTWG) in 2011, as a forum to sharing experiences and practices in anti-corruption efforts among the APEC members.

Indonesia was chosen as the chair of

ACTWG in 2013. During its chairman-ship, Indonesia has initiated ACT-NET as a network for legal forces, investigators, prosecutors, and related authorities to get the reciprocal legal aid and extradition among the APEC members.

APEC Summit 2013 is being held in Bali from October 1 to 8, including some related meetings, such as the Concluding Senior Official Meeting (CSOM), APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM), ABAC CEO Summit, and APEC Economic Leaders meeting.

According to him, the organizing committee has checked the prepara-tions for the summit ranging from the welcoming ceremony for state officials

at Ngurah Rai International Airport to the arrangements at the conference venue where heads of state will stay.

As many as 21 leaders of APEC are expected to assemble here on Oct. 7 and 8, 2013.

“We have conducted an evaluation meeting in preparation for the APEC summit. Based on our inspection, (we have found) all facilities including the conference venues are ready, as ex-pected,” Tanjung noted after inspecting

the Media Centre at Bali Nusa Dua Con-vention Centre (BMDCC), the venue of the summit.

The national committee for the APEC Summit has confirmed US President Ba-rack Obama`s attendance at the meeting.

“As of today, Wednesday (Oct. 2), his participation in the meeting has been confirmed,” stated Tanjung.

Tanjung, however, said the committee would be monitoring the schedule for the US President’s arrival.

There was a dark fountain and a nightmarish carousel featuring inky, surreal-looking horses. There was a twin escalator and a luxury hotel elevator. And there was the universe of clothes in all-black.

The decor was like a greatest hits collection that fused elements of past shows with the present one, tracing designer Marc Jacobs’ influential 16-year reign at the house.

Shortly after the show at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the visual metaphor was explained: LVMH announced that Jacobs was stepping down as creative director of its flagship brand. So Ja-cobs’ ready-to-wear collection for the storied house looked like a funeral for a reason.

The dark show came on the final day of a fashion week that saw de-signers channel black and white but also other, sometimes colorful trends. Looks on high rotation included: tribal African, ethnic pattern prints, multitudinous pleats, metallic sheen and revealing micro mini crop tops. Mid-blue was a particularly favored color.

And while Louis Vuitton shows

are often extravagant and can use sets that cost millions of euros, the less well-off had options, too, during this year’s fashion week. An initiative in recent years called the “Designer’s Apartment” provided showroom spaces for top young designers such as Aganovich, Monographie and Le Moine Tricote. Still, it was the well-established heavy hitters who drew the most attention.

The 41-piece display — which used embroidered black silk stock-ings, Eisenhower jackets embellished cabaret-style with large feathered shoulders, dark appliqued embroider-ies, smoking jackets and some 1940s baggy, blue jeans — was a study in noir.

The glimmering catwalk landscape was towered over by a huge clock, whose arms, instead of going forward, went back in time nostalgically.

“We went back and used all the different bits of the sets of the past,” Jacobs explained backstage. The clothes, too, went back in time.

Floor-length, thick Edwardian dresses and large proportions in the sleeves fused with black decorative corset details that evoked the fashions of the 1900s, and contrasted with the more revealing “showgirl” looks.

They were inspired by singers such as Cher, whose look from the “Take Me Home” days was evoked in many ensembles. But at moments it felt as if some looks belonged more to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci.

In the program notes, Jacobs en-closed a message evoking a farewell to LVMH’s chief executive: “For. Ber-nard Arnault. All my love, always.”

But it was the standing ovation from Anna Wintour that said the most. Such rare, visible acclaim from the powerful U.S. Vogue editor — to whom he partly dedicated the show — was a poignant cap to his tenure.

Glenda Bailey, the influential U.S. editor of Harper’s Bazaar, said the show signaled the “end of an era.”

“Watching the show was like see-ing your life flash before your eyes, because there were so many memo-rable moments referenced,” she told The Associated Press.

NEW YORK — It didn’t take long to see how a computerized wristwatch might help manage my digital life — or to see how Samsung’s new Galaxy Gear smartwatch falls short.

First, the potential: Smartwatches are supposed to offer quick access to many of the things you normally do on your phone, such as checking messages, tak-ing photos, checking the weather and answering calls. You can install apps for additional functionality that lets you track fitness activities and play games. It’s like having the power of your smartphone on your wrist.

That sounds great in principle. These gadgets aren’t meant to replace phones; they’re supposed to work with phones to display the information you need most. While I’m wearing the Galaxy Gear, I can glance at my wrist for messages during dinner or at a movie, as if I’m checking the time. It’s not so obvious that I’m be-ing rude, the way pulling out a phone would be.

Samsung’s Gear is stylish. Its 1.6-inch (4-centimeter) screen, measured diago-

nally, keeps the watch small enough — at least for men — to work as a fashion accessory. Straps come in six colors. For now, the Gear works only with the new 5.7-inch (14.5-centimeter) Galaxy Note 3 phone. Both started shipping in the U.S. on Tuesday.

The Gear costs about $300 and the Note 3 another $300, with a two-year service agreement. Although the Gear works with a cellular version of a new Galaxy Note tablet, Samsung is selling only a Wi-Fi version in the U.S. for now, starting Oct. 10 for $550. So until Sam-sung updates the software on its older phones, you need to buy both the Gear and the Note 3. For $600, this better do a lot to manage my digital life.

I took the Gear to a street fair in Brook-lyn and tried to use it to meet up with my brother and two groups of friends. I was able to read text messages and reply to a few using voice dictation. But the voice-command service is slow and makes many transcription errors. It also doesn’t give me enough time to read and confirm what I’m about to send, forcing me to start over. After a few attempts, I took out the phone and started replying the normal way.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The government utilized the Asia-Pacific Economic Corpora-tion (APEC) forum to promote young entrepreneurs of Indonesia through the event entitled the ‘APEC Unthinkable Week 2013.’ The event aims to take advantage of the crowds and the diversity of the APEC participants to encour-age young entrepreneurs.

Deputy Minister of Commerce and Entrepreneurship, Minis-try of Economic Affairs, Edy Putra Irrawaddy, accompanied by Chairman of the National Coordination Team for Creative Entrepreneurial Development,

Dr. Handito Joewono, in a press conference on Wednesday (Oct 2) stated the activity taking place on October 2-5 at the Discovery Kuta Bali would feature the Young Entrepreneur Business Model Competition followed by 226 registered participants, and 43 participants from 20 APEC countries.

“In the APEC meeting this time, we enliven to promote the national entrepreneurship development. Moreover, we will also encourage the young entre-preneurs of Indonesia to learn cooperating with the entrepre-neurs from the APEC member countries,” he said.

Actually, the potential of nuclear both in Indonesia and the world is huge. Moreover, many uranium mines such as in Kalimantan and Papua is still unopened at all,” he said.

To build a small-sized nucle-ar power plant, he said, would take approximately 7 years. “It will be better if the nuclear power plant is started from now,” he said.

NUSA DUA - U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to arrive in Bali on October 7 for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, Chairul Tanjung, deputy chairman of the APEC Summit organizing committee said on Thursday.

Earlier, Indonesian military sources had reported that Obama was scheduled to arrive in Bali on October 5. But his arrival has been postponed due to the current political situation in the U.S.

The BBC reported that Obama was scheduled to begin his four-nation Asian tour on Saturday, heading to Bali for the APEC Summit and Brunei for the East-Asia Summit before travelling on to Malaysia and the Philippines.

However, Obama had to postpone visits to the last two stops of his four-nation Asian tour because of the current U.S. government shutdown.

The White House said it was “logistically not possible” to go ahead with the trips to Malaysia and the Philippines at the end of the tour.

But Obama would still attend the regional summits in Indonesia and Brunei, the White House confirmed.

The U.S. government has partially shut down after the two houses of Congress failed to agree on the new budget.

More than 700,000 federal employees face unpaid leave, and national parks, museums and many buildings have been closed.

LOS ANGELES — A jury cleared a concert promoter of negligence on Wednesday in a case that attempted to link the death of Michael Jackson to the company that promoted his ill-fated comeback shows.

meant hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for her and the singer’s three children and provided a rebuke of AEG Live, the nation’s second-largest concert promoter. Kevin Boyle, an attorney for Katherine Jackson, said he was disap-pointed with the verdict.

“We, of course, are not happy with the result as it stands now,” Boyle said. “We will be exploring all options legally and factu-ally and make a decision about anything at a later time.”

He added: “We think that what we’ve done with this case is prove some things that are important for the Jackson family and for the concert industry and the sports industry with regards to treatment by doctors.” Boyle declined to answer further questions.
