Abadi ferry were increasingly brutaland difficult to be dammed. Residentsor passengers continued to complainabout it. Unmitigated, prospective pas-sengers that normally should pay IDR35,000 for the crossing motorcycleswere obligated to pay far more expen-sive, namely IDR 250,000. “It wastruly harming the passengers,” criti-cized the Village Chief of Sekartaji,Nusa Penida, Wayan Suarta, when at-tending a hearing with the chairmenand members of the KlungkungHouse, Tuesday (Oct 12).

Suarta proposed a shift or mutationimposed to the ticket officers. Other-wise, it would be very difficult to dis-continue the action that seemed to havebeen well organized. “Probably, thereare some officials getting involved inthe ticket brokerage,” added the resi-dent of Nusa Penida, Nengah Setar.

Setar questioned where the excessof money paid by ticket purchaserswent. The normal fare was IDR35,000, but passenger should paymany-fold namely IDR 250,000. “Itshould be questioned, whether the ex-cess payments were allocated to theirsenior,” he said.

Setar urged the relevant parties, gov-ernment and the police to come downto the field in order to check the bro-kerage activities because the ticketbooth was scheduled to open at 9:00a.m., but the tickets had been sold outprecisely at 8:00 a.m. Surprisingly, at

Even, it was recognized that anumber of offices within the airportarea would be relocated as well.Admittedly, the relocation was in theinterest of the airport development.

Development for the expansion of

Ngurah Rai Airport was acceleratedfrom the previous schedule. Origi-nally, the construction was sched-uled to begin early next year, but itwas then brought forward to Novem-ber 2010. This was related to the in-struction of President SusiloBambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in thecabinet meeting on the developmentacceleration of Ngurah Rai Airport.

Acceleration of the airport devel-opment was related to the implemen-tation of Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Summit 2013.President targeted the airport devel-opment should have been completedby March 2013. Earlier, the accom-plishment of the development wastargeted in May 2013. (par)

If government is serious aboutdeveloping new destinations as aneffort to attract more tourists tostay longer on this island,Mayungan Anyar Hamlet can po-tentially be developed intoagrotourism. The hamlet belong-ing to Antapan Village territory,Tabanan has uniqueness of itsown. “Mayungan Hamlet hasagrotourism attraction along withits Five Enchantments,” said EkaMahadewi in Nusa Dua recently.

This lecturer of Bali TourismInstitute (STP Bali) then explainedthe five types of enchantmentsconsisted of characterized envi-ronmental conditions, undulatingtopography and beautiful hills.Similarly, the village had a vari-ety of vegetables, horticulturalplants and characteristic crop. “Interms of historical development,Mayungan Hamlet produced vari-ous vegetables being able to pro-vide supply for the Baturiti sub-district long time ago,” she said.

Mayungan Anyar Hamlet RetainsAgrotourism Potential

Historically, continued Eka, thevillage was capable of producingvegetables that provided suppliesfor Baturiti subdistrict as well asother areas from the past times.Meanwhile, in the field of technol-ogy, local villagers remaining to usetraditional manners along with itssubak irrigation system could be-come the main attraction.

Its products comprised the com-bination of activity to enjoy thenatural scenery of plantation andagriculture with other activities, such as enjoying the scenery aroundthe tourist object while pickingpineapples, tomatoes, oranges andother fruits. “And the current trendat the village is that visitors can doadditional activities such as hikingand cycling around the location ofagrotourism,” said the administra-tor of the Indonesia Hotel and Res-taurant Association (PHRI) ofBadung Chapter calmly.

Mayungan Hamlet also had an-cestral cultural heritages such as

Chinese ceramics originated inthe Ming Dynasty times (thir-teenth to fourteenth century),pieces of slonding gamelanblades, buffer of slonding blades, and the Okokan arts. The pan-oramic view of terraced rice fieldcombined with sunset generatedan interesting scene. Likewise, there were also tourist attractionsof Ngingil and Cepung Waterfallthat were no less interesting.

However, Eka added that theroad leading to the village stayedto become a significant constraint.Road access to the village was ex-tremely damaged and not worthyto be passed through. Then, con-necting bridge of Tohjiwa Villagein Badung Regency andTalangpati Village in TabananRegency had not been improvedyet properly. For this moment, these objects could only be reachedby motorcycle or four-wheeled pri-vate car because there was no pub-lic transport. (BTN/bud)

anxious to discuss political matters, having put them to the side for now toconcentrate on less contentious prob-lems. The two sides plan to meet againbefore the end of the year.

BEIRUT – Thousands of cheering Lebanese welcomed IranianPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Lebanon on Wednesday, throw-ing rose petals and sweets at his motorcade at the start of a visit thatunderscores deep divisions within this tiny Arab nation.

“Ahmadinejad has done a lot forLebanon, we are here to thank him,”said Fatima Mazeh, an 18-year-oldengineering student who took theday off classes to join the crowds.“He’s not controlling Lebanon. Ev-eryone has a mind and can think forhimself. We are here to stand withhim during the hardest times.”

Hezbollah’s opponents in Leba-non often brand it a tool of Iran andfear the movement is seeking to im-pose control over the country.Hezbollah boasts widespread sup-port among Shiites, virtually runs astate-within-a-state in Shiite areas, and has the country’s strongestarmed force. Iran funds Hezbollahto the tune of millions of dollars a

year and is believed the supply muchof its arsenal.

Hezbollah and its allies, in turn, saytheir political rivals are steering Leba-non too far into the American camp.

As Ahmadinejad arrived, thou-sands of Lebanese lined the mainhighway into the capital fromBeirut’s airport, located near themainly Shiite districts of southBeirut. Many waved Lebanese andIranian flags, and giant posters ofAhmadinejad towered over the road, while loudspeakers blasted anthemsand women in the crowd soldHezbollah flags and balloons to on-lookers.

Ali Chehade, a 32-year-old mathteacher, told his kids to take the dayoff to come to the airport road.

“Ahmadinejad is a big leader inthe region because of his words aboutthe resistance,” he said, referring toIran’s support for what Hezbollahtouts as its armed resistance to Is-rael.

The wine comes out of the rice because of fermentation.Arak:

arak is a kind of hard liquor. It is fermented from thesap of a special kind of palm tree.

Additionally, there are variants of non-alcoholicbeverages above that have met Balinese creativity andoutside influence, resulting in various kinds ofinteresting drinks. Air kelapa muda (young coconutjuice) with various kinds of liquors like rum or tequilacan be found in many restaurants, presented attractivelyin the coconut fruit itself. And what can be moreinteresting than a Pina-Colada like drink served inside afreshly cut out pineapple. (http://asiarecipe.com)

WASHINGTON - There is “no risk” of a global cur-rency war erupting, despite recent currency interventionsby nations ranging from Japan to Colombia, US TreasurySecretary Timothy Geithner said Tuesday.

Geithner acknowledged in an interview on “The CharlieRose Show” broadcast on Bloomberg TV that Brazil hasmade reference to the possibility, but he brushed aside fears.

“They used that phrase,” Geithner said. However “thereis no risk of that.” Geithner’s comments came despite afailure this weekend by the world’s top finance officialsmeeting in Washington to reach a consensus on measuresthat could head off a potential currency battle.

In a statement, the International Monetary and Finan-cial Committee — the policy arm of the IMF — on Satur-day stopped short of any specific call on China or others tochange policies of using a low currency and accumulationof reserves to boost exports.

The International Monetary Fund steering committee, which has been struggling to address friction among keyeconomies including China and the United States, noted“tensions and vulnerabilities” due to “widening global im-balances” but said the organization should continue to studythe situation

Geithner on Saturday said the IMF “must strengthen itssurveillance of exchange rate policies and reserve accu-mulation practices,” adding that “excess reserve accumu-lation on a global scale is leading to serious distortions inthe international monetary and financial system.”

Recent IMF figures showed Beijing had currency re-serves of 2.447 trillion dollars, the largest in the world andnearly 30 percent of the global total.

Washington maintains that China purchases largeamounts of dollars to keep the yuan artificially low, whichdistorts global trade by boosting Chinese exports.

The criticism of US monetarypolicy and its weakening dollarcomes as Washington steps up at-tacks on Beijing over its yuan ex-change rate, which US lawmakersclaim is grossly undervalued and iscausing global trade imbalances.

US policies were putting pressureon emerging economies’ currenciesand fanning inflation in them as theyimport resources denominated indollars at higher prices, ZhangMonan, a researcher at the State In-formation Centre said in commentspublished in the official China Se-curities Journal.

BEIJING - China said Wednesdayits trade surplus shrank in September, but analysts warn the drop is unlikelyto ease fears of a global currency war, with Beijing accused of cheating its wayto commercial dominance.

The country’s trade surplus fell to16.88 billion dollars in September from20.03 billion dollars in August, and wasthe lowest surplus in five months, cus-toms authorities said.

The figures come as China set theyuan’s central parity rate — the middleof the currency’s allowed trading band— at 6.6693 to the dollar, its strongestsince a June promise of limited currencyreform.

But the data is unlikely to calm an-gry US and European lawmakers, whoare demanding that China let the yuanappreciate faster against the dollar.

“I think the pressure is still going tobe there,” Brian Jackson, a Hong Kong-based senior strategist at Royal Bankof Canada, told AFP. “I think the factthat their exports are still very strongsuggests that there’s plenty of scope forthem to do more on the currency.”

Some critics claim the yuan is un-dervalued by as much as 40 percent, giving Chinese exporters an unfair ad-vantage by making their shipments ar-tificially cheap.

Beijing vowed in June to let the yuantrade more freely against the dollar.Since then, the currency has advancedaround two percent against the green-back.

Recent currency interventions bynations ranging from Japan to Colom-bia have sparked fears of a global cur-rency war and the Chinese trade datahas done little to ease those concerns, analysts said.

“China’s overall trade surplus mayhave declined slightly last month, buttensions are unlikely to do the same,”said Mark Williams, a London-basedeconomist at Capital Economics.

SHANGHAI - A loose monetary policy in the United States hurts the global economy and putsmassive inflation pressure on emerging economies, a researcher with a Chinese government thinktank said Tuesday.

A weaker dollar tends to boostdemand for dollar-priced resources, which come cheaper for buyers us-ing stronger currencies. In turn, thatusually lifts demand and prices.

“Data showed that nearly two-thirds of the 20 emerging economieshave negative real interest rates. Theupward pressure on overall pricelevels is huge,” she wrote.

“The quantitative easing mon-etary policy in the US will severelyhurt the balance of international pay-ments and currency reserves inemerging economies,” Zhang wrote.

The dollar has fallen 6.5 per-

cent against a basket of major cur-rencies since September while theChinese yuan has risen 1.74 percentagainst the dollar in the same period, the researcher said.

Zhang noted that given the cur-rent situation, an interest rate hikemay not help China curb domesticinflation as monetary liquidity floodsglobal markets and pushes priceshigher.

With the interest rate gap betweenChina and other countries, a rate hikemay increase upward pressure on theyuan and lead to more speculativefunds flowing in, she said.

China’s trade surplus shrank in September asgrowth in exports and imports slowed sharply, official datashowed on October 13, but the decline was unlikely to ease pres-sure on Beijing for a stronger yuan.

China’s trade surplusshrinks in September

China’s exports rose by 25.1 percentin September year-on-year to 144.99billion dollars, compared with an in-crease of 34.4 percent in August, thedata showed.

Imports rose 24.1 percent on-yearin September to a record high of 128.11billion dollars, but slower than the 35.2percent growth recorded in August, thereport said.

The slower growth was due to thehigh base effect last year rather thanweakness in the global economy, Bankof America-Merrill Lynch analyst LuTing said in a research note.

Beijing-based Citigroup economistKen Peng told AFP that despite theslowing export and import growth lastmonth, the data remained very strongand would “not stop the calls for moreappreciation” in the currency.

China has repeatedly rejected de-mands for a sharp rise in the yuan, withPremier Wen Jiabao telling Europeanlawmakers last week that such a movewould destroy Chinese firms and fuelsocial instability by triggering joblosses.

“The world will by no means ben-efit from a crisis in the Chineseeconomy,” Wen added, pledging to“gradually allow more flexibility in theyuan exchange rate while maintainingits basic stability”.

While China has said it wants to re-duce its heavy reliance on exports todrive the economy, the export sectorremains a massive employer in thecountry of 1.3 billion people.

China’s top central banker ZhouXiaochuan said at an InternationalMonetary Fund meeting last week thatthe yuan would move gradually to-wards an “equilibrium” level but re-jected any “shock therapy”.

The country’s foreign exchangeregulator said Tuesday that reformingthe yuan exchange rate did not equateto currency appreciation and that mar-ket players should get used to “two-wayfluctuation in the yuan exchange rate”.

Chair of the judges, English poetAndrew Motion, said the work was“a completely worthy winner of thisgreat prize.” “‘The Finkler Ques-tion’ is a marvellous book: veryfunny, of course, but also veryclever, very sad and very subtle.”

The story’s main character is aformer BBC radio producer, JulianTreslove, who despite not beingJewish develops a fascination withJewishness. The tale explores thistheme through his relationship withtwo Jewish friends.

Britain’s press praised the decisionto hand the award to the writer, withthe Guardian newspaper hailing “avictory for that most overlooked genreon literary prize lists, the comic novel.”The Independent said awarding theprize to Jacobson “broke the mould.”

“It was predicted to be the mostlikely loser, not least because acomic novel has never satisfied thetastes of high-minded judges,” saidthe paper.

NEW YORK – One word seems to best describe Jerry Seinfeld’s role as a Broadway director: reluctant. The TV and stand-up star said he began helping comedian Colin Quinn develop material for what wouldbecome Quinn’s one-man stage show “Long Story Short” and then got roped into directing a work thattraces global events from the caveman to the digital age in just 75 minutes.

The show debuted off-Broadwaythis summer to generally good re-views and now goes on Broadwayat the Helen Hayes Theatre for an11-week run starting Oct. 22.

Seinfeld and Quinn, who met de-cades ago while working comedyclubs, said collaborating on thisproject was easy since they bothknow stand-up and have comple-mentary talents.

“I’m very smart about beingfunny and he’s very funny about be-ing smart,” said Seinfeld. “He’s re-ally a smart guy that figured out howto be funny, and I’m smart about tak-ing funny and figuring out how topace it and organize it. So it was agood blend of skills.”

Quinn has been testing slivers ofthe show’s material for years, butfound comedy clubs weren’t the bestvenues for intellectual humor.“They’ll stay with you for about 30minutes. Then they’re like, ‘All right,c’mon. Will somebody talk about thelower half of the body, please? Weget it: You’re smart,’” he said.

The one-man show is constantlybeing tweaked to add or removetopical elements. “We don’t want itto end. At some point, it’ll end. Butit’s fun to keep playing with it. It’slike a car — you keep tuning it,”Seinfeld said. Asked how he knewwhat was funny on stage, Seinfelddeadpanned: “I had a sitcom in the’90s,” he said.

“Cars that use sensors torecognise other vehicles, pedestriansand bikes will in future drive moresafely than people, who lose concen-tration and get tired,” the FU said.

The technology will sharply re-duce the number of cars on the road, because people will no longer needtheir own vehicle so much, using

instead driverless cars pooled in car-share schemes, the MIG’s develop-ers believe. “Most cars spend 90-95percent of the time parked on the sideof the road ... Our aim is to give backmost of the roads back to pedestri-ans,” it said.

“In the future people will wonderwhy at the beginning of the 21st cen-tury we still drove our own cars.” TheMIG, which from the outside lookslike a regular Volkswagen Passat

with a camera on top, was put throughits paces at Berlin’s disusedTempelhof airport on Thursday, butit has already been tested on publicroads.

It is by no means the first self-driving car, however. US technol-ogy giant Google said this weekthat its driverless cars — but alsowith a human inside — have al-ready travelled 140,000 miles(225,000 kilometres) around the

“So in 2006 we launched theproject, calling it the Museum ofBroken Relationships, in whichpeople could kind of store their feel-ings. “The concept is that peoplehave a sort of cathartic experience, getting rid of the burden of a failedrelationship by donating items fromtheir personal stories.”

Although some may baulk at re-vealing such personal details,Grubisic believes the main motiveof donors, who remain anonymous,is to symbolically close a chapter intheir life.

“All major events in our lives, like weddings or funerals, are ac-companied with a sort of a ritualwhile only in break-ups is one alone.

“This in a way provides a kindof a ritual. Through a donation tothe museum an object changes itscontext and becomes somethingelse,” the 41-year-old explained. The newly-opened exhibition inZagreb has provoked lively interestin both Croatia and abroad.

Over the past four years, it hastoured around 20 locations in Eu-rope, North America, Asia and Af-rica.

Button tips Vettel to pip Webber to F1 crownIt is Webber who has led the way

in the drivers’ standings for much ofthe year, but of the Red Bull duo,Vettel is the one who is inarguablycurrently on-form, off the back of aclose runner-up finish to Ferrari’sFernando Alonso in Singapore and asublime victory in Japan last week-end.

The German has outscored his

Australian colleague in each ofthe last three races to close towithin just 14 points of him head-ing next to Korea, and holds a ten-six lead in the qualifying stakesto-boot. Should the Korean andBrazilian results mirror that ofSuzuka – a one-two finish, withVettel ahead – then the pair wouldbe equal on points heading intothe crucial UAE showdown, andButton knows who his moneywould be on.

“Vettel has to beat Mark twicemore to be on the same points,”mused the British star, who haspiled the pressure on Webber on anumber of occasions this seasonalready. “Going into the last racewith equal points, I would say Vettelhas the legs in qualifying and overthree races would have the advan-tage over Mark. If those two carshave the advantage over everyoneelse, there won’t be pressure onVettel and he will do it.”

RBR team principal ChristianHorner has similarly sung his youngprotégé’s praises in the wake of hissupreme, lights-to-flag Japanesesuccess – a second dominant per-formance at Suzuka in as manyyears from the 23-year-oldHeppenheim native.

“One of Sebastian’s strengths ofcharacter is the self-belief that hehas, and I don’t think he has everdoubted for one moment that he isout of this championship,” the En-glishman revealed. “Seb has re-sponded in the best possible way.

“We are fortunate in the team tohave two level-headed and strong-willed drivers, and while that inevi-tably poses challenges at times, itis a luxury problem to have. I amdelighted with the performance ofthe two drivers, and I obviouslyhope they keep performing at thislevel over the remaining threeraces.”
