Getting Things Done In Our Neighbourhood

A number of residents contacted me to ask if I could get cars to SLOW DOWN on Thorpe Park Road and Mayors Walk, in Netherton and on Hartwell Way. I have had new signs painted on roads and will push for 20mph is plenty in residential neighbourhoods. Residents have also supported my calls to take action where businesses are being run from dwellings that cause problems to neighbours such as pollution, noise and inconsiderate parking.

WestTown - We are still asking for replacement Community Hall facilities since the Council closed St John’s Hall. Action has been taken to tackle nuisance parking and protect grass verges, slow down speeding and improve safety.

Netherton - Following a request from residents in Charlotte Way to replace the missing bus stop and fi nish off the pavements, these have now been done. At the Longthorpe and Netherton Residents Association Meeting many issues are raised. I informed residents about increased parking patrols, the CCTV vehicle being deployed and penalty notices issued. There are concerns that the growth of Jack Hunt school may exasperate the matter. I have been pursuing the enforcement of regulations on

verge and pavement parking and Labour will introduce these next year if we have the backing of other parties on the Council. I can confi rm that the CCTV camera at Netherton Shops is working and concerns about anti-social behaviour and drugs have been reported.

Westwood – My Councillors Surgery is held on the fi rst Tuesday of every Month at 11.30am at the Community Café. At 1pm the Westwood and Ravensthorpe Residents Association meet at the Cross Keys Hub. All Residents welcome. WestRaven Community Café has now been open for 8 months and is going from strength to strength with a relaxed, sociable and vibrant atmosphere. The Community Fridge has now been launched where free food is available from the freezers. This really is a great place to wind down and meet up with friends. A Function Room is available for hire. They now have a new menu off ering a wide range of aff ordable meals, cakes and drinks. Visit https://www.facebook.com/BigLocalWestraven/ to see the full menu as well as future events.

Ravensthorpe – Well done to all those developing our Community Garden and who attended the recent Ravensthorpe walkabout. Sadly on the 18th November William (Wull) Robertson passed away. Condolences to his family and friends. William will be sadly missed, he genuinely cared for the world around him particularly the environment.I have supported moves to tackle speeding and asked for SLOW DOWN markings to be painted on Hartwell Way Road. A new pelican crossing will be constructed on Gresley Way near Ravensthorpe School Bus Stops.

Families First Community Café at Highlees Primary Families First have a new Parents’ & Carers’ Community Café in the school Hub. It is open from 9 – 12pm on Thursdays during term time. There are hot and cold drinks, tasty snacks and toasted sandwiches on off er at very reasonable prices. We would like to provide things like free craft workshops and school holiday play sessions, so this is a great opportunity for Parents & Carers to pop in and let us know what they would like to see happen in the Highlees Primary Hub. For more information please call Cherry Lester on 078 514 249 25

Councillor Report At the last Full Council Meeting the main issue was Rhubarb Bridge. Once again members of the public were excluded from the public gallery because of Cllr Coles presence. Prep work had already been

done on Rhubarb Bridge and the Conservatives were on the back foot. It is clear they planned to demolish this bridge; astonishingly a Tory Councillor had defended the decision saying there were no accidents on other at grade crossings in Peterborough a lie which the Peterborough Telegraph exposed. They have now agreed that costs will be sought for replacement or its refurbishment. The whole question is now one of trust as they said it would cost £30 million to replace when we know that the costs are likely to be £6 million. Early on in the Council meeting I proposed to change the order of the agenda so that we could discuss issues around the fi nancing of housing and the planned hotel loan of £15 million however this was declined because Cllr Holdich was worried that this might eat into time for his colleague Cllr Fitzgerald’s prepared speech of pathetic and puerile stunts. The Council Meeting was dominated by our issues, Rhubarb Bridge, Housing, Nuisance Fire Works, Effi cient Use of Council funds and Human Rights. Business however was conducted very poorly with no time to discuss the issues. Frankly many Cllrs behave badly, are rude and meetings are resultantly dysfunctional.

There is little persuasion or discussion about topics as the Conservatives try and struggle on to control by the skin of their teeth simply ridiculing other members rather than dealing with the issues. Voting is now done electronically and there were several hic ups and at one stage we had to return to a show of hands vote as this proved quicker. My motion to tackle irresponsible use

of fi reworks and call for legislative restriction on the sale of noisy ones was agreed, despite the Ravensthorpe Conservative Councillors voting against this sensible motion. Our motion on using funds to help developers build a hotel rather than investing in housing was not debated and we lost the vote. However we ensured that the debate was raised when this matter came up hidden away in a report and we forced a recorded vote on the ability of the council to make such loans. We won the argument pointing out the wording was very poor and could open the council up to losses however the Tories were whipped and we lost the vote. Labour plans to build new Council Homes in Peterborough we want to build 350 each year to tackle the housing emergency. The Conservatives have wasted millions on Bed and Breakfast and spent over £1m on the Travelodge. Hopefully they have seen the light and will stop wasting money instead we can acquire new homes, build them and bring empty buildings back into use such as Bretton Court which we will convert into 40 fl ats.
