Welcome

Welcome to the Inspiring Education ECIS Leadership Conference in Seville

Seville is at the heart of Andalusian culture and a keeper of the wonderful Moorish legacy; it is also a vibrant city, where the enticing aromas of tapas, red wine and flamenco will delight your evenings, so thank you for making the inconvenient travel arrangements!

You are able to access the full programme and participant lists via our mobile site, using either your own devices or the internet lounge in the exhibition area. This allows us to update the changes in real time and to be friendly to our environ-ment. The conference schedule has been printed for your convenience.

On Friday and Saturday we will have our keynote presentations in the Giralda I-II suite, where a buffet breakfast is also be-ing served. Breakfast begins at 07:30 and the opening sessions begin at 08:20.

Keynote Speakers

Kakenya Ntaiya was set to follow the traditional path of girls born in the small village of Enoosaen, Kenya. Engaged at the age of 5, she was to participate in a female circumcision ceremony as a young teenager and then be married. But she had a different plan. First, she negotiated with her father and willingly agree to be circumcised, only if he would allow her to finish high school. Later, when she was accepted to Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Viriginia, she negotiated with her village elders to do what no girl had ever done before, leave her village to go to college in the United States. She didn’t leave forever, though. Deeply proud of her heritage and of her community, Ntaiya returned to the village after school and worked with her elders to establish a school for girls there. The Kakenya Center for Excellence was established in 2009 with 32 students. A primary grade boarding school just for girls, the curriculum focuses on academics, leadership and female empowerment, along with cultural preservation and life skills. While families that can afford tuition do, Ntaiya also works with donors to provide scholarships for others.

Ben is an actor and presenter who has played a number of leading roles on television and for the Donmar and Almeida theatre companies as well as at Shakespeare`s Globe. He has run many masterclasses for the Shakespeare`s Globe Education Centre and has worked in close collaboration with Mark Rylance and Richard Olivier in the development of an experiential theatre learning technique called Mythodrama. As an Associate Director at Olivier Mythodrama, Ben is now running sessions bringing this work into a broad range of organisations across the world. “Contender Charlie” is the group he has formed to take this, and other theatre techniques, into education. Its courses are now being run at Headteacher conferences and staff and student events all over Europe.

Keynote Speakers

Peter Dalglish is the founder of Street Kids International and is a leading authority on working children, street children and war-affected children. After graduating from Stanford and Dalhousie Law School, Peter Dalglish organized an airlift of food and medical supplies from Canada to the starving African nation. His encounter with emaciated and destitute refugees seared him for life. In Khartoum in 1986, Peter Dalglish began the Sudan’s first technical training school for street children, funded by Bob Geldof of Band Aid. Pickpockets, petty thieves and housebreakers were transformed into carpenters, welders and electricians; the graduates were hired by local businesses. Inspired by the tenacity and ingenuity of kids society had written off, Peter Dalglish returned to Canada in 1987 to found Street Kids International. Armed with $200, a borrowed office and an American Express card, he launched an agency that has become a global leader in designing creative self-help projects for poor, urban children.

Toby Greany specialises in system reform and system leadership, school leadership and improvement and the nature and impact of evidence based practice. Before joining the London Centre for Leadership in Learning he was Acting Executive Director - Leadership Development and Director - Research and Development at the National College for Teaching and Leadership (formerly the National College for School Leadership) for seven years. Before joining the College, Professor Greany worked at the Design Council, the Campaign for Learning and the Cabinet Office, and taught in Brazil, China and the UK. He also acted as Special Advisor to the Education and Skills Select Committee.

Mark Atkinson is the founder of Teachscape, Inc where he has served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. He has raised more than $50 million in venture and philanthropic funding for Teachscape and secured ground-breaking partnerships with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Stanford University, SRI International, the New Schools Venture Fund, Intel, McGraw-Hill, and the American Federation of Teachers. Mr Atkinson has also served as an advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Measures of Effective Teaching project. He currently steers Teachscape’s long-range corporate strategy with a specific focus on innovative partnerships to expand Teachscape’s role in the preparation, licensing, assessment, and development of K-12 teachers. Mr Atkinson also advises federal, state, and local policymakers on new approaches to teacher evaluation and licensure. Mr. Atkinson is a current director of PresenceLearning, Inc.

Justin Barbaro is a 3rd year PhD student in Education Leadership and a Graduate Research Assistant at the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership at Teachers College. His research foci include international school leadership and management, role transition theory, and school choice. His dissertation will investigate how international school heads experience the surprise, orientation, and socialization phases when transitioning to new schools. The practical application of this research will help inform how both international school heads and the boards tasked with their hire plan strategically for successful headship transitions.

Steve Barkley is internationally recognized for his ability to facilitate change. He has more than 30 years of experience working in classrooms, schools and universities building teacher capacity for heightened student success and is well-known for guiding school improvement through coaching, mentoring and professional development. Steve has recently worked with teachers at many international schools and has also served as the facilitator of coaching workshops. Steve has presented at a variety of international conferences including the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the Mediterranean Association of International Schools (MAIS), the Alliance for International Education (AIE), and the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NESA). Steve’s dynamic energy and captivating style translate his extraordinary knowledge about life in the classroom and provide the necessary skills for effective change in individual teachers, teams and schools.

Kevin has held leadership positions in Tanzania, Namibia, Austria and Belgium, where he is currently Director of the International School of Brussels, a fully inclusive school. He has been deeply involved in designing accreditation systems for the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). Kevin was a member of the Founding Board of CIS and served as Chairman for four years. He is a writer and trainer in the field of leadership for learning for the Principals’ Training Center. As a curriculum designer he was the initiator and early leader of the IB Primary Years Programme. Kevin is currently involved in launching two global initiatives: The Next Frontier: Inclusion and The Common Ground Collaborative, a curriculum project for international and national schools. Kevin is, first and foremost, a practitioner of leadership for learning.

Bambi Betts is the Director of the Principals’ Training Center for International School Leadership and has been actively involved with the PTC since its inception as a course developer, trainer, and co-trainer for the PTC’s Essential Skills courses. Bambi is also the CEO of AISH. She has held positions as Director of Escuela Campo Alegre, Deputy Superintendent and Middle School Principal in Caracas, and also a senior school head in Portugal. Bambi is a leading consultant on a wide range of topics in international schools and conducts on-site training modules related to the effective international school. She has written many articles on practical ways to improve international schools and authors a regular column on the PTC pages of The International Educator (TIE).

Sarah Daignault is an instructor at the Klingenstein Center, Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. She works with Private School Leadership Masters candidates in the area of school finance and has a consulting practice working with schools and associations in the areas of operations, finance and governance. Sarah spent 12 years as the Executive Director of the National Business Officers Association (NBOA), an association dedicated to serving independent school business officer by providing professional development and information on independent schools finance and operations. In addition to her experience in school finance and operations, she has extensive governance experience. During her 19 year tenure on the Board of Directors of the Madeira School in Virginia, Sarah was the President of the Board for eight years. She also chaired the Capital Campaign for five years and the Head Search process. She serves on several Boards.

On using video technology as a tool for professional development Charlotte Danielson is an internationally-recognized expert in the area of teacher effectiveness, specializing in the design of teacher evaluation systems that, while ensuring teacher quality, also promote professional learning. She advises State Education Departments and National Ministries and Departments of Education, both in the USA and overseas. She is in demand as a keynote speaker at national and international conferences, and as a policy consultant to legislatures and administrative bodies. The Danielson Group, which Charlotte heads consists of consultants of the highest calibre, talent, and experience in educational practice, leadership, and research providing a wide array of professional development and consulting services to clients.

Judith Fabian became Academic Director of the IB in June 2007 after three years as Head of Programme Development in the IB Cardiff office. Before joining the IB in 2004, Judith taught English A1 and TOK in international schools in the Netherlands, Jordan, Tanzania and Germany. She was High School Principal at the International School of Tanganyika and Munich International School, overseeing the implementation of the MYP in grades 9 and 10 in both schools. Prior to her work in international schools, Judith was a deputy head teacher and taught English and drama in state schools in London, UK. She has a first degree in law from the University of Nottingham, and a Masters degree in education from Goldsmith’s College, University of London.

Dr Marc Frankel is a Senior Consultant and partner in Triangle Associates, an international consultancy specializing in higher, independent and international education. A psychologist by training, Dr. Frankel facilitates governance workshops, leadership development programs, and strategic planning around the world, and coaches numerous senior leaders in universities and independent schools. His clients include schools in Europe, Asia and North America, including large and small institutions and Tier 1 universities. Among his accomplishments are the development of evaluation methodologies for governing boards and senior academic and administrative leaders, co-founding the School Leadership Institute for the National Association of Independent Schools, and authoring or co-authoring numerous articles and white papers on issues in governance and leadership of schools and universities years.

Judith Hegedus is the Executive Director for International Strategy & Business Management for the College Board. For six years she has worked with the College Board, first as a consultant through Booz Allen Hamilton offering leadership in the implementation of the large-scale process redesign process for SAT and recently on international strategy for all College Board programs and services. Judith served as a management consultant for the United Nations from 2005-2006. She later received her MBA from Columbia University. As a native of Hungary and a former international student, Judith has a strong interest in global education.

Clay Hensley is the Director of International Strategy & Relationships at the College Board. Hensley is a key member of the College Board’s International team, which is responsible for managing the effective administration and use of College Board programs in more than 180 countries globally. He also supports the efforts of the College Board’s higher education membership to recruit prospective undergraduate students internationally. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a Masters of Fine Art in painting from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Adele Hodgson’s experience spans the business and not for profit worlds ranging from banking, to medical research, to education. She is the author/editor of three books, and numerous articles on strategic planning, marketing and development, and governance. Some of her most recent activities have involved advising local government and economic development agencies on the establishment and effective management of schools, strategic planning for mature schools, curriculum development, teacher recruitment and governance training. Adele has been involved in the establishment of international schools and her expertise is sought by international school boards worldwide and she is a regular presenter at ECIS and other educational conferences.

Lori Langer de Ramirez began her career as a teacher of Spanish, French, and ESL. She is currently the chairperson of the ESL and World Language Department for Herricks Public Schools. She is the recipient of the Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture; several National Endowment for the Humanities grants for study in Mexico, Colombia, and Senegal; and a Fulbright Award to India and Nepal. Her areas of research and curriculum development are multicultural and diversity education, folktales in the language classroom, and technology in language teaching. She holds a master’s degree in applied linguistics and a doctorate in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College, Colombia University.

Elizabeth Martin has primary responsibility for managing Rubicon’s client relationships throughout Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. With more than a decade of experience, Elizabeth expertly guides schools through the implementation and enhancement of their own unique curriculum processes, which cut across a wide range of pedagogical approaches and program methodologies. Ms. Martin is fluent in German and Spanish as well as English and has also played a lead role in the production of multi-lingual resources for the Atlas Curriculum Management System.

Dr Fran Prolman is an internationally recognized consultant specializing in educational leadership, school improvement and instructional strategies and communication skills, critical thinking and organizational development. Fran facilitates leadership retreats for administrators, delivers system-wide keynote speeches and workshops, and coaches administrators in the building of professional learning communities, instructional supervision, evaluation systems and the change process. She facilitates workshops for teachers focusing on differentiated instruction, formative and summative assessment, classroom application of instructional strategies that enhance student achievement, critical thinking, and curriculum design for a Common Core standards-based classroom.

Pearl Rock Kane is a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University and holds the Klingenstein Family Chair for the Advancement of Independent School Education. She serves as the director of the Klingenstein Center and is the advisor for the master’s degree programs and is also coordinator of education leadership programs which includes both public and private schools. Professor Kane has taught and served as an administrator in public and private schools in Massachusetts and New York and is active on several Boards. She is the recipient of a number of honors and awards including the National Association of Principals for Schools for Girls Outstanding Achievement Award, and the ECIS Award for Exemplary Contribution and Outstanding Service to Promotion of International Education.

Judith Schechtman is a Senior Consultant and a principal in Triangle Associates an international consulting firm specializing in leadership and organizational management. One of the founders of the School Leadership Program and the Institute for Aspiring Heads for the National Association of Independent Schools, Ms Schechtman has written and researched extensively on a broad spectrum of topics related to governance and leadership. Judith facilitates governance workshops, leadership development programs and strategic planning around the world. She also serves as executive coach for senior leaders in universities, independent and international schools. Ms. Schechtman has designed and developed assessment methodologies for boards, heads and senior leaders in independent and international schools.

Roger Smith has provided strategic direction for some of the world’s largest and most successful organizations. He has extensive experience in conducting technology integration and has worked with schools in a wide range of strategic technology issues. Mr Smith frequently speaks on breakaway best practices on curriculum development and assessment and has been involved in the educational arena for over 25 years.

Off Site Venue Cordoba has historically attracted travelers and civilizations because of its location on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, for its sunny climate and its natural resources. Romans, Arabs, Jews and Christians left their mark on the city of Cordoba with monumental buildings, works of art and advanced infrastructure. As a result, the historic center of the city brings a valuable cultural legacy declared in 1994 as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Thirty monuments are distributed around the Mosque-Cathedral and make the historic center of Cordoba one of the largest in Europe. The coaches will depart at 09:00 from and return to the Melia Sevilla Hotel ; the meeting point will be the Main Lobby of the hotel. Please ensure you wear sun protection cream, sun glasses and hats / caps, comfortable shoes and don't forget your water bottle! Off Site Venue The itinerary of the visit to Ronda is, outside the Church of the Merced, Alameda del Tajo where there is a balcony with the best views of the Serrania de Ronda, inside the Plaza de Toros which is the oldest bullring , New bridge, Muslim Bridge and walk through the different streets of the old town, visiting the exteriors of the most important monuments of Peace Church where is the patron of Ronda, Iglesia Santa Maria, Lara Museum where you will visit the most important private collection Andalucia, the main Square, Casa de Don Bosco, etc.The coaches will depart at 09:00 from and return to the Melia Sevilla Hotel ; the meeting point will be the Main Lobby of the hotel. Off Site Venue The city of Granada is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at the convergence of three rivers, Beiro, Darro and Genil, at 738 metres above sea level yet only one hour from the Mediterranean coast, the Costa Tropical. Nervion I Tablets in general, and the iPad in particular, are rapidly becoming the must-have tech in schools fearful of being left behind in the rush to embrace mobile. But what are the educational benefits of adopting iPad implementation schemes in schools, and how can heads and principals ensure that they don't become the next IWBs - expensive tech toys with mostly untapped potential used by teachers unevenly or not at all?

ACS Schools are entering their fourth year of using iPads in the classroom and our implementation was accompanied from the very first days by a longitudinal research project mentored by advisors from Harvard Graduate School of Education, ACS Schools' own Centre for Inspiring Minds and two Scottish universities. This project now includes ten schools in the UK and elsewhere that are providing consistent and usable data about good practice and optimal pedagogical effectiveness using iPads in classroom settings from Early Childhood through to High School.

This presentation presents some of that data alongside the voices of teachers who demonstrate how the iPad has guided them on a journey from the substitution stage to the redefinition stage of the SAMR model. The focus is on four specifically defined aspects of pedagogy that have traditionally proved challenging for schools introducing technological initiatives and that are now yielding insights that directly benefit teaching and learning.

Off Site Venue The Alcazar of Seville ( Spanish Reales Alcazares de Sevilla or Royal Alcazars of Seville )is a royal palace in Seville, Spain, originally a Moorish fort. It is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe, and it was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with the Seville Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies.

The Almohades were the first to build a palace, which was called Al-Muwarak, on the site of the modern day Alcazar. The palace is one of the best remaining examples of mudejar architecture. Subsequent monarchs have added their own additions to the Alcazar. The upper levels of the Alcazar are still used by the royal family as the official Seville residence and are administered by the Patrimonio Nacional.

The buses will depart from outside the Melia Hotel at 19:00 promptly, so please gather in the Main Lobby by 18:50. The guided visit will begin at 19:30 and last for one hour, after which the buses will return to the Melia Hotel.

We will also reflect on the leadership roles and duties necessary to embed these principles in our school practice.After establishing this theoretical understanding, we will then explore different ways of bringing the research to life: from starting off to further development steps. This exploration will take place within the constraints of our own realities and challenges. In particular, we will look closely at the broad approach of The International School of The Hague as a model. Giralda I-II How can international schools make the most of headship transitions? New leadership has the potential to bring renewed spirit and school cohesiveness when there is a confluence of three critical factors: 1) the board hires carefully, 2) the board paves the way for the incoming head to be successful, and 3) the incoming head is strategic in handling the entry period. By ensuring that changeover is handled thoughtfully, schools can avoid a rocky start or short tenure for the new head and lessen the rapid turnover that can exhaust and demoralize a school's human and financial resources. The purpose of this study was to document the factors that incoming heads and hiring trustees identify as crucial to shaping the success or failure of the headship transition in international schools. Findings from this study should guide future research and practice aimed at improving transition experiences for international school heads.

One of the primary reasons parents enroll their children into top international schools in Europe is to smooth their entry into leading universities. The mission of the College Board, a worldwide leader in college admissions, is to connect students to higher education globally. This session will provide an update on international student mobility and admission trends, focusing on Europe and how these trends impact ECIS member schools. According the IIE's Open Doors Report, almost every country in Europe saw more students enroll within American universities last year compared to the previous one. This discussion session will highlight how best to prepare international students for world-class higher education and beyond. We will also examine patterns in student search behavior and preferences, reflected in application trends and in traffic within college planning websites. The session will be interactive, enabling you to receive candid advice and feedback from Bianca Montenegro, a leader in the undergraduate admissions field.

Giralda III The recent publication What is an IB education (IBO 2013) describes the core values and principles that underpin all IB programmes with their mission to develop international mindedness.These are further explicated in the publication Programme standards and practices (IBO 2010) as requirements which should be clearly visible in all IB school communities.When policies are viewed as a set of dynamic practices they can be powerful in transforming whole school culture so that it embodies IB values. But in order to be so effective, the policy implementation must be a priority supported by the school leadership.This presentation will demonstrate the links between a school language policy and the development of international mindedness, highlighting the responsibilities and actions that are needed across the whole school for success in an IB education.

Nervion I They say necessity is the mother of invention, perhaps then conflict is the inspiration of learning. We are after all, teachers, guiding our students toward problem solving on a daily basis.

Many cultures share the wisdom of understanding one's adversary in order to be prepared for future conflict. Many of the greatest scientific and technological breakthroughs in recent decades, particularly in physics, communications, medicine - even the microwave oven! emerged from learning undertaken in times of war. When learning takes place in adversarial conditions, does that always lead to undesirable outcomes? When we study an adversary and seek understanding, are we not actually taking the same road described in the IB Mission Statement that seeks to create a better and more peaceful world through inter cultural understanding and respect?

When we make an intensive study of an enemy, whether for academic, political, or military reasons, do we not sometimes find that other people, with their differences, can also be right?

Two former 'Cold War Warriors', Dr. Malcolm Pritchard and Dr. Vladimir Kuskovski, are now heads of IB World School in China and India, two of the world's most populous countries. Both are fluent in languages they did not know when growing up in their respective homelands of Australia and Russia. Both studied the cultures and languages of the other nations intensively and emerged with an understanding and respect that is put into practice each day in their schools. In this session, these two former 'adversaries' will share some of their experiences learned on the road to becoming educational 'allies'.

Giralda I-II Peter Mott, Doug Marston, and Jeff Paulson from Zurich International School will lead a discussion of transition by sharing their story of what ZIS did to honor and celebrate the transition of a long-term Director, yet welcome and transition the new Director for success. The workshop complements transition work done by Pearl Kane and Teachers College, Columbia University. The transition process used in ZIS practical experience involved three phases of recruitment, pre-transition for Peter and Jeff, and post-transition for Jeff. By sharing our unique transition experience, it is our hope other international schools will benefit by learning how developing a purposeful transition plan creates clarity and makes a huge difference to a Board of Trustees, Leadership Team(s), community, and to the departing and new Director of a school. The process at ZIS proved to be very successful and sent a positive message of the community working together in the best interests of the school community moving forward.

Daresh (2004) says that mentoring (and coaching) must be included in any experiential professional development programme. Guides...are needed to help professionals negotiate their way through a field and make sense out of what is happening around them ... as a result there is considerable potential to be found in applying the concept of mentoring (and coaching) to the professional development of school administrators (2004). With the ever increasing number of new international schools and new leadership in these schools, there is a growing need for a source of experienced and capable leaders who can guide and support these new leaders in the field.ECIS will be asking experienced and retired heads of schools who have worked outside their country of orgin in a variety of geographical areas, to take on some training to become coaches and mentors with well known trainer Steve BarkleyCoaches and mentors will then be able to connect through ECIS with heads who are new to the role, or facing interesting new challenges and who ask ECIS for support.The ECIS coaches and mentors will be focusing on supporting heads in their leadership roles and in a variety of challenging circumstances, or potentially simply as mentors helping their school leaders with their professional development.
