PRE CONFERENCE INSTITUTE ‐ THE ESSENTIAL ROLE OF FUNDRAISING AND PHILANTHROPY IN ACHIEVING FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY FOR YOUR SCHOOLWhat can philanthropy achieve for your school? How do you, as a Head, Trustee or Director of Development, set realistic goals which tie in with your overall strategy? Which fundraising models work and why?

Thursday 4 April0830 ‐ 1630 PRE CONFERENCE INSTITUTE ‐ SISG MASTER CLASS

The high performance school board

Governance is concerned with the issues of performance, control and accountability of schools. While for many, the term governance implies conformance and compliance and adherence to (often arcane) rules, the heart of governance is much more than acting as a back‐stop or safety net. The performance aspects of governance are often neglected but they are real and even slight changes in these key aspects can have large positive impacts on effectiveness. The major governance mechanism for enhancing the performance aspects is the school board. In this session, we shall examine what it takes to have a high performance board and also what gets in the way. We shall look at both composition and dynamics of boards and also how boards should assess their own performance. Through our discussion, we shall develop some targeted practical steps to deliver higher performance in your own particular context.

We will focus on the area around the German Parliament and Brandenburg Gate. Certainly we would also see some remains of the Berlin wall and the famous Checkpoint Charlie. As Berlin has undergone great changes in the last 20 years, we also should not miss to explore the new Berlin as it can be seen at Potsdamer Platz.

Thursday 4 April1000 ‐ 1400 HALF DAY PRE CONFERENCE CULTURAL TOUR ‐ COLD WAR TOUR

This tour follows the often ghost like trail of the Death‐strip and Wall, retracing some of the more intriguing fortifications of its border from Guard Towers to tank traps.

Get an extraordinary insight into: what it meant to live in the eastern bloc's most Stalinistic State – the former GDR; successful and failed escapes where Border Command sooner followed the orders of 'shoot to kill' than allow the heinous crime of 'flight from the Republic'; how MI6 and the CIA tunnelled under the Wall and Soviet Zone and tapped into the Red Army's secret communications; the methods used by the Stasi to guarantee control of east Germany's population, from 'radiation tags' to "Day X" preparations.

During this 4 hour tour your English speaking guide will take you to the most impressing and shocking places of GDR history and give you insight to this part of German history. During our tour the famous Berlin Currywurst should not be missed! Therefore we includes a Currywurst stop for the Group.

1030 - 1130 GLOBAL WOMEN'S GROUP SESSION

International education today requires confident, responsible and caring women to lead educators in meeting the challenges of an educational landscape that is rapidly changing. Believing that more women should take a 'leap of faith' to pursue and attain top leadership positions in schools, a group of women who have held senior leadership positions in international education have chosen to initiate the Global Women's Leadership Assembly to inspire, motivate, and support women in their pursuit of the CEO position in the global community of schools. Our objective is to provide practical information to help women attain their first school headship. We expect representatives from the head search organizations to attend the session. If you are a current school leader or aspire to become one, we encourage you to join us. Aspiring school leaders are welcome to bring along copies of their CV's--networking is an important step toward attaining that first headship. We see this session as interactive and engaging. In addition, an outline of the first Global Women's Leadership Assembly, which we hope to host in the near future, will be provided. Get involved…the number of leadership positions in international schools is predicted to increase in the upcoming years. It's your future and YOUR DAUGHTERS' futures we're considering!

Through a highly interactive approach, which will incorporate the use of case studies the presenters will also work with the participants to examine team building, conflict resolution, the latest trends in salaries and benefits and the sustainable development of a strategic culture. Keynote Address Two Education Paradigms: What Defines a World Class Education The world needs creative and entrepreneurial talents who are globally competent to take advantage of the opportunities brought about technology and globalization and tackle the tough challenges facing human beings. But our schools are being pushed to produce homogenous, compliant, and employee-minded test-takers, as a result of seductive power of the traditional education paradigm. In this presentation, Dr Yong Zhao challenges the traditional paradigm, debunks the myth of international tests such as PISA and TIMSS, and proposes a new paradigm of education aimed to cultivate diverse, creative, and entrepreneurial talents. Introducing the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA)

Each year, the ISA is used to assess over 60 000 grade 3-10 students from over 75 countries in mathematical literacy, reading and writing. The ISA makes it possible to monitor your students’ performance over time and to confirm that your internal assessments are aligned with international expectations of performance.

“Last year we used the ACER test for the first time . . . We were very impressed with the tests, the feedback/report from yourselves and how these tests really fit into our school. With this said we will be using the tests again this year.”

JAMES HAMILTONDirector of Elementary Education, Riverstone International School, USA

“As a senior assessor for a large international educational organisation, and in various roles in international schools, I have some experience in assessment matters, and am hugely impressed by the tests and the reporting systems. I was initially a bit sceptical about their value, but having seen the system through once, am a convert and believe that they are a superb tool. The longitudinal graphics are arresting and serve as an excellent method of drawing staff into a statistical analysis that would otherwise be rather impenetrable for many. ”
