concept (Employment, Education and Economic Development) for the emerging and transitional workforce.

CareerSource Brevard (CSB) received a contract in August, 2013 from Eastern Florida State College to provide a broad range of specialized services including the development and facilitation of vibrant industry advisory councils. The purpose of the councils is to advise college administrators with respect to the development and maintenance of quality career and technical education programs which produce graduates who are prepared to enter the workforce. An update with results was provided.

Adjourn: Mike Menyhart, Chair, adjourned the meeting at 9:13a.m. Youth Council Call to Order: Mike Menyhart, Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:16 a.m. in CSB Rockledge Boardroom. In Attendance: Mike Menyhart (Chair), Michael Bean (via teleconference), Robert Jordan (via teleconference) Sherrita Thomas (via teleconference) Pastor Jarvis Walsh from R.E.A.L. Church, Lori Goodwin and Laura Zamjahn from Children’s Home Society and Sally Shinn from Students in Transition, Brevard Public Schools Introductions were made.

Youth Partner Roundtable

Updates were provided on CSB’s NextGen Program, Foundations Training, Children’s Home Society and their students in transition. A barrier was defined by the CHS transition young adults because of the time availability of the youth between their commitment of school and working. BPS does have High School Case Managers that specializes in transition and homeless young adults. Many connections between organizations and our services were made. Discussion topics included the biggest challenges facing young adults in our area and how we can address them in addition to who else can CSB invite to provide input. The group discussed the possibilities of doing a designated foundations training for youth if they could get them in the room. Ms. Rice shared that Erica Lemp and Pastor Walsh were two of the winners in Lead Brevard’s 4 under 40 program. Adjourn: Mike Menyhart, Chair, adjourned the meeting at 10:02a.m. Respectfully submitted, Reviewed by, _{signature on file} ___ _05/07/14_____ _{signature on file} Marina Stone Date Mike Menyhart, Chair Date

Information Brief

Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) Industry Advisory Councils

Background As part of the Goal 1 strategy to “Serve as a catalyst for Real Time Occupational Skills Transfer”, CareerSource Brevard (CSB) entered in to a contract with Eastern Florida State College to enhance and accelerate the effectiveness of the EFSC councils and fully leverage the assets and resources of area industry representatives. The purpose of the councils is to advise college administrators with respect to the development and maintenance of quality career and technical education programs which produce graduates who are prepared to enter the workforce. The first industry advisory council meeting was held December 10, 2013.

Since December, CSB has combined several existing EFSC councils with similar focus, broadened the industry membership, restructured agendas, and conducted eleven council meetings for the following programs:

Results

• Aviation and Aerospace • Business Administration and Office Technology • Computer Science and Information Technology • Manufacturing and Engineering Technology • Healthcare and Life Sciences • Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management

Topics of meetings generally center on industry trends, training, challenges and employment needs in the respective industries and are generally well attended and well received. Several overarching themes have emerged as a result of these discussions:

• The need to improve the pipeline of a skilled cross-functional workforce to meet industry specific needs.

• Existing courses/programs should be reviewed and restructured to meet industry skill set requirements and local industry should be educated on the benefits of programs and credentialing offered by EFSC to meet their requirements.

• There is a current and future need to increase awareness of and improve the image of careers in certain industry sectors.

Council members examined what they could and should do to meet these needs. The following actions highlight some of the short term strategies that have been developed:

• The public image of manufacturing careers will be improved by increasing awareness through media articles, initiating County resolutions, and participating in, National Manufacturing Day (NMD) on October 3rd in collaboration with Brevard Public Schools. The planned student events that day include visits to Embraer, meeting the Thunderbirds, and tours at some EFSC industry council members’ businesses.

• A Business Learning Event is being developed to occur by early November. The intent is to familiarize local businesses about student internships and co-op programs, the opportunities and value such programs offer, and to develop a database of businesses interested in hosting an internship/co-op student.

• A Student Seminar Series is being developed to address industry needs and trends using industry leaders as panelists and subject matter experts. The intent is to give students the insights of providers on local and national trends and skills needed in industry to assist them in planning their career ladder. The first event in the series will center on the status of “well care v. health care” in a horizontal healthcare system.

• Industry council members were polled for recommendations to add/change/ delete occupations on the proposed 2014-15 Regional Targeted Occupation List. This list is integral to EFSC in deciding curricula to meet industry needs and to CSB for directing OJT and ITA funds.

• Several software curriculum items were added to the Computer Science courses based upon the input of industry council members. Additionally, the council will be working with Eastern on the XCEL-IT Cybersecurity grant including determining what certifications are needed in the industry; providing SME’s and adjunct faculty and sharing industry hardware/software resources.

Current contract requirements have been met and Board Staff is seeking renewal/extension to continue services over the next year.
