Essay writing and elocution competitions On the event of Godavari mahapushkaralu , Essay Writing and Elocution Competitions were held at HCRI, V.R.Gudem on 03rd July, 2015. In Essay Writing Competitions 1st position was bagged by Mr. K.Raghu Varma (VH 13-50) and Ms. P. Asha Devi (VH 12-08) stood first in elocution competi-tion. In continuation of this programme, University level competitions were conducted on 6th July, 2015 at HCRI, V.R. Gudem in which Ms. P. Asha Devi (VH 12-08) got first prize in elocution and Ms. T. Neeharika (AH 14-24) stood first in Essay Writing Competitions. The Two students Ms. P. Asha Devi and Ms. T. Neeharika represented Dr YSRHU at state level competitions at Aadikavi Nannayya University, Rajahmundry on 09th July, 2015 in Essay Writing and Elocution Competitions.

Digital India Week Digital India is an initiative of Government of India to integrate government departments and the people of India. It aims at ensuring the government services made available to citizens electroni-cally by reducing paper work. The initiative also includes plan to connect rural areas with high speed internet networks. The objective of the programme is to inform, educate and engage citizens in ongoing government efforts to transform India into digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Digital India Week was observed all over India from 2nd to 7th July, 2015. An awareness programme on ‘Digital India’ for students was organised at SKPP Horticultural Polytechnic, Ramachandrapu-ram on 7th July, 2015 followed by a rally by students and staff of SKPP Horticultural Polytechnic as part of Digital India week.

Dr. Ramakrishna, Principal explained about the importance of Digitalisation and Digital India Programme. Meeting with M/s. Jain irrigation systems Ltd Dr. M.L.N.Reddy, Dean of Horticulture, Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension, Dr.D.Srihari, Dean of Student Affairs, Dr.M.B.N.Rao, Director of Industrial and International Programmes, Scientists of HRS and HC&RI, Venkataraman-nagudem interacted with the Officials of M/s. Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd, Jalgoan to discuss about MOU between both the organisations to take up Collaborative Research.

National level PG admissions Dr.M.Lakshminarayana Reddy, Dean of PG Studies, Dr.YSRHU and Sri T.Trimurthulu, JACT have attended 20th AIEEA for PG Admissions held at NASC Complex (ICAR), Pusa Campus, New Delhi on 2nd and 3rd July, 2015 for Horti-cultural courses of Dr.YSRHU under ICAR quota. Ten students from Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Orissa with JRF ranks have taken admission in Dr.YSRHU for M.Sc.(Hort.) degree programmes in Fruit Science (4), Vegetable Science (3), Floriculture and Landscape Architecture (2) and Plantation, Spices, Medicinal And Aromatic Crops (1).

Students selected for ICAR PG courses

• Mr. Dilip Kumar Dingal (VH/11/22) got admission into M. Sc (Hort) under ICAR- JRF in Dhar-wad Agricultural University, Dharwad, Karnataka. • Mr. Mohammad Mustafa Sk (VH/11/52) got admission into M. Sc (Hort) under ICAR-non JRF in Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology – Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. • Ms. Santhi Sandeep M. (VH/11/82) got admission into M. Sc (Hort) in Floriculture department under ICAR- non JRF in Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab. • Ms. Sravani V. (VH/11/97) got admission into M. Sc (Hort) under ICAR- non JRF in Floricul-ture department under ICAR- non JRF in Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Orissa. The above four students (2011 admitted batch) completed the B.Sc (Hons.) Horticulture at HC & RI, VR Gudem. • Ms. Anusree Agarwal (VHM/13/02) PG student of HC&RI, Venkataramannagudem got Ph D (Floriculture and Landscape Architecture) admission in G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Uttarakhand.

Placements

• Ms. V. Manasa (VH-07/42) UG student of HCRI, VR Gudem selected as scientist in Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board in Soil Science. • Ms. B. Sravanthi (VH-07/76) UG student of HCRI, VR Gudem selected as scientist in Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board in Spices, Plantation, Medicinal and Aromatic plants. Degrees Awarded • Mr. J N Ravi Kumar (VHM/13/16) was awarded M. Sc (Hort) degree in Vegetable Science on 7th July, 2015 at HCRI, VR Gudem. • Mr. B. Chandra Mouli (VHM/13/03) was awarded M. Sc (Hort) degree in Vegetable Science on 10th July, 2015 at HCRI, VR Gudem. • Twenty two students were awarded B.Sc(Hons.) in Horticulture Degree at HCRI, VR Gudem.

New species of parasitoid Twenty one species of Psix group were known in the world as on today, of which 7 species are from India. A Scelionid wasp Psix sunithae (Hymenoptera) is a new species reported on unidentified Coreid bug eggs laid on leaf of Nux vomica, a medicinal plant by Smt. P.Sunitha, Scientist (Entomology), HRS, Venkataramannagudem. It is an egg parasitoid and the species got identified at IARI, New Delhi.

Work shop on Value chain development A Work shop on Value Chain Development and Promo-tion of Exports of Mango, Banana, Tomato & Chillies from Andhra Pradesh was organised by Dept of Horticul-ture, Govt of Andhra Pradesh on 6th July, 2015 at Hotel Golkonda, Hyderabad. The workshop was inaugurated by Sri. Prathipati Pulla Rao, Hon’ble Minster for Agriculture, Horticulture and Sericulture in the presence of Smt. V.Usha Rani, Commissioner of Horticulture and Dr.B.M.C.Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, Dr.YSHRU. Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research, Dr.R.V.S.K,Reddy, Director of Extension, Dr.L.Naram Naidu, Principal Scientist (Hort) & Head, HRS, Lam and Dr.B.V.K.Bhagavan, Principal Scientist (Hort)&Head, HRS, Kovvur chaired the group discussions and interactive sessions on value chain development and promotion of exports in mango, banana, tomato & chillies with all the stake holders - Scientists, Farmers, Exporters, Processors and Consultants.

Theses submitted • Mr. L. Rama Murthy (VHM/13/14) submitted the thesis of P G Programme on “Influence of explants (sucker) age and source of collection (plant and Ratoon crop) on crop duration and productivity of tissue culture banana cv. Grand Naine (AAA)” • Mr. K. Kumar (VHM/1307)submitted the thesis of P G Programme on “Evaluation of Radish (Raphanus sativus L)cultivars for growth, Yield and quality traits in Coastal Andhra Pradesh”

Survey of acid lime orchards Smt. G. Sarada, Scientist (Ento) has analysed and extracted nema-todes from soil samples collected in acid lime fields from various mandals of Nellore district and found that the soils from various mandals have medium to heavy nematode infestation. Severe infes-tation (6000-10000 juveniles/200g soil) of these nematodes was observed in the soils of Nellore district. This nematode causes slow decline and is one of the reasons for citrus die back.

Training programme on Cocoa A three day training programme on Cocoa cultivation was conducted by HRS, Ambajipeta at FTC, Vizianagaram during 2nd - 4th July, 2015. Sri. M.M.Naik, District Collector inaugurated the training programme. Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension attended the training programme as Special Guest. Dr.G.Ramanadam, Principal Scientist(Hort) &Head, Dr. N.B.V.Chalapathi Rao, Senior Scentist(ento), Smt. E.Padma, Scientist (Hort), Dr.A.Snehalatha Rani, Scientist(PP) delivered lectures on various topics. Smt. D.Prameela, JDA, Vizianagaram and Sri. Laksminara-yana, PD APMIP were also there during the inauguration. A booklet on ‘Cacoa saagu-melaina yajamaanyam’ was released during this programme.

Training programme on vegetable nursery management Sri. S.Narasimha Rao, Scientist (Pl.Path.), Horticultural Research Station, Darsi has attended a training programme on “Nursery management in vegetables” at Cheruvukommu-palem as resource person on 10th July, 2015 and explained about seed treatment, management of pests and disease in vegetable nurseries.

Training on grafting techniques As part of workshop on “Horticultural Farms Devel-opment” for Horticultural Officers and Assistant Directors of Horticulture, Department of Horticulture, Government of Andhra Pradesh Dr.M.Rajasekhar, Senior Scientist (Hort) & Head, HRS Venkataramanna-gudem explained about grafting techniques in Fruit crops and shown various grafting methodes to the participants on 1st July, 2015.

Extension

Method demonstration Dr. P. Ashok, Scientist (Hort), AICRP on Tuber Crops, HRS, Venkatramannagudem has conducted a method demonstration on ‘Seed treatment of Cassava stem cuttings’ at Aanuru village of Peddapuram mandal, East Godavari district on 3rd July, 2015. Stem cuttings of cassava measuring 20 cm should be dipped in a solution of Mancozeb @ 3 gm + Dimetho-ate @ 2 ml per litre of water for 5 minutes before planting in the nursery or in the main field.

Diagnostic visit Sri Ch.Kiran Kumar, SMS(SSAC) conducted a field diagnostic visit to Paddy nursery at Telikicherla village and suggested nutrient and pest management practices in nursery and main field

General

Visit of Project Officer, ITDA Sri K.V.N.Chakradhara Babu, IAS, Project Officer, ITDA, Rampachodvaram has visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pandirimamidi on 6th July, 2015. Dr.A.Srinivas, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK, Pandirimamidi has explained about nursery activities. He informed the Project Officer-ITDA that KVK is producing high yielding cashew graft of BPP-8, 9 & 4. For quality scion material cashew scion block was established with mother plants of cashew in an area of 7 acres at KVK, Pandirimamidi. Project Officer-ITDA, Rampachodavaram advised to improve production to meet the demand and to provide technical support to control pests and diseases in agriculture and allied sectors which will help the Tribal farmers.

Exposure visit About 40 farmers of “Nandi Rythu Samakhya”, Nan-dayala, Kurnool district visited Dr.YSRHU campus, Venkataramannagudem on 8th July, 2015. An interac-tion meeting was organised at KVK, Venkataramanna-gudem and Dr.R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension, Dr.YSRHU, Dr.M.Rajasekhar, Senior Scientist (Hort.) & Head, Dr.E.Karunasree, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK, Venkataramannagudem interacted with farmers during the visit. Dr.B. Ramesh Babu, Scientist (Hort) and Sri Ch.Kiran Kumar, SMS(SSAC) explained about Improved cultivation practices in vegetables, Crop regulation and disease management in papaya, Pest and disease management in chilli, Improved varieties of pulses and fodder crops. Sri. M. Paratpara Rao, Asst Professor (Genetics and Plant Breeding), Smt. K. Usha Kumari, Asst Professor (Horticulture) arranged a exposure visit (GPBR-3.8.3 and VGSC-3.2.1 courses) to third year students to show the seed testing and certification procedures of vegetable crops at Andhra Pradesh State Seed Development Corporation (APSSDC), Tanuku and State Seed Testing Labora-tory, Tadepalligudem on 4th July, 2015.

Participation in Alluri Sitaramaraju Jayathi Utsavalu Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pandirimamidi arranged an Exhibition Stall during Alluri Sitaramaraju Jayanthi Utsavalu on 04th July, 2015 organized by ITDA – Rampachodavaram. Various exhibits related to horticulture were kept in the stall and Dr. A.Srinivas, Programme Coordinator explained about activities and ongoing programmes of KVK, Pandirimamidi.

Tribal sub-plan Dr.B.V.K.Bhagawan, Zonal Research Head and Sri Ch.Kiran Kumar, SMS(SSAC) visited Kamaiahkunta, Lankapalli, Pandugudem and Bandamgudem villages of Buttaigudem mandal along with Project Horticultural Officer, ITDA for Tribal sub plan progrommes and forty farmers were identified for field demonstrations on “Integrated Nutrient Management in Cashew” and “Integrated Crop Management in Cotton”(20 each) under Tribal sub plan programme of KVK, Venkatara-mannagudem. Nursery Production Production of quality seedlings in Chilli(20,000 Nos) and Papaya (3,000 Nos) was taken up at KVK, Venkata-ramannagudem under shadenet as per the farmers’ requirement. The seedlings raised in protrays and polybags will be supplied to the farmers on payment. Soil Sample Analysis Analysis of 700 soil samples collected from seven different mandals (Undrajavaram, Kalla, Duvva, Penugunda, Tanuku, Narsapuram and Nidadavolu) of west Godavari dist has been taken up at soil testing laboratory of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Venkataramanna-gudem in collaboration with Soil Testing Lab, Depart-ment of Agriculture, Tadepalligudem. It was found that around 30 percent of samples are deficient (below critical limit 0.8 ppm) in available Zinc among cationic micronutrients (Iron, Zinc, Manganese and Copper), where as other three elements were found to be above critical limits in all the samples.
