In other parts of the country this Groundhog Day; Ontario’s Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam predicted an early spring, while Alberta’s Balzac Billy and Quebec’s Fred la Marmotte called for more winter.

Celebrating the cold: A little walk for a big problemThe coldest night of

2012 may not actually be February 25th, but for the anticipated 3000 people participating in the second annual “Coldest night of the year” walk-a-thon, they hope it’s pretty close.

The Coldest night of the year (the waLK), is a five and ten km fundraising walk that supports select partner charities that serve the hungry, homeless and hurting in 18 cities across Canada.

The waLK is held on saturday, February 25th

and provides walkers the opportunity to experience a hint of the challenge faced by those experi-encing homelessness by walking for a few hours during a cold Canadian winter’s night.

in each host city, a local charity that is well-known for their work with those experiencing homeless-ness partners with the waLK to run the event and raise much needed money for their work.

in Kamloops, the new Life Mission is the select

partner. executive director Kelly row says the pro-ceeds from the walk will help the new Life Mission cover the extra meal costs they have incurred over the last year.

“we served over 6,700 extra meals in 2011 so we are hoping the community will come together to help us meet the needs of those who are struggling with homelessness and pov-erty.” said Kelly.

in 2011, the pilot year for the waLK, 406 partic-ipants collectively raised

over $110,000, but in 2012, national Campaign organizer brian Carney expects much more.

The Coldest night of the year begins with registra-tion at 4:00pm and par-ticipants will be released around 5:00pm. The event concludes with a warm, light snack to celebrate the effort of all walkers and volunteers.

SPCA asks you to lend a hand to help a pawThe Kamloops branch of the bCspCa is looking for

volunteers for the local Community Council every year, the bCspCa cares for almost 37,000

homeless, abused and abandoned animals across b.C.“Community Councils are a special group of dedicated

volunteers who address the ‘big picture’ of animal wel-fare in our community,” says Charleen holloway, branch manager of the Kamloops branch of the bCspCa. “we are looking for new members who can bring their skills and talents to our local branch.”

Community Council members make a lasting dif-ference in the lives of animals in Kamloops by: build-ing community support and interest in animal welfare issues; helping to develop financial and other crucial resources for the care and successful adoption of needy animals; acting as an ambassador for the bCspCa in the community; and ensuring that the community is well-represented at the regional and provincial levels of the society’s governance structure.

“as a valued Community Council member, you can

play a crucial role in the future success of the bCspCa, and also in the lives of the many animals that need our help every day,” Charleen holloway notes. “we are looking for people who can fundraise and provide advocacy on behalf of the animals of Kamloops. we also need people to help with volunteer development and education within our branch, as well as with humane education in the community. There are so many opportu-nities to work for the animals, and there are many roles that don’t involve day-to-day contact with the animals. i know some people feel unable to volunteer with the animals directly, and this is how those people can help the animals in another, equally valuable way.”

The Diamond Jubilee Medalon February 6, her Majesty

Queen elizabeth ii marked the 60th anniversary of her acces-sion to the Throne as Queen of Canada, an occasion marked only once before by her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria in 1887. To celebrate her Majesty’s 60 years of selfless service and devotion to duty, outstanding Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life will be recog-nized with the Queen elizabeth ii diamond Jubilee Medal.

“These medals provide an opportunity to honour exceptional Canadians for their contributions to their fellow citizens, to our communities and our country,” says Cathy McLeod, Member of parliament for Kamloops, Thompson, Cariboo. “i have been invited by the governor general to become a partner in this pro-gram by nominating 30 eligible candidates to receive this national honour from our constituency. i invite all constituents to contact

my office to recommend potential candidates for the medal.”

To be eligible for this honour, a person must: be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, but need not necessarily reside in Canada; have made a significant contribution to a par-ticular province, territory, region or community within Canada, or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada; and been alive on February 6, 2012, the 60th anniversary of her Majesty’s accession to the Throne. The medal can be awarded posthu-mously, as long as the recipient was alive on that date.

a girl asks her boyfriend to come over Friday night and have dinner with her par-ents. since this is such a big event, the girl announces to her boyfriend that after dinner, she would like to go out and make love for the first time.

well, the boy is ecstatic, but he was inti-mately inexperienced, so he takes a trip to the pharmacist to get some condoms. he tells the pharmacist it’s his first time and the pharmacist helps the boy for about an hour.

he tells the boy everything there is to know about condoms and sex. at the regis-ter, the pharmacist asks the boy how many condoms he’d like to buy, a three-pack, ten-pack, or family pack. The boy insists on the family pack because he thinks he will be rather busy, it being his first time and all.

That night, the boy shows up at the girl’s parents’ house and meets his girlfriend at the door. “oh, i’m so excited for you to meet my parents, come on in!”

The boy goes inside and is taken to the dinner table where the girl’s parents are seated. The boy quickly offers to say grace and bows his head. a minute passes, and the boy is still deep in prayer, with his head down. 10 minutes pass, and still no move-ment from the boy. Finally, after 20 minutes

with his head down, the girlfriend leans over and whispers to the boyfriend, “i had no idea you were this religious.”

The boy turns, and whispers back, “i had no idea your father was a pharmacist.”
