in an effort to encourage young entrepre-neurs—and a way to get more lemonade stands for thirsty bike commuters!—kamloops bike to work week (btww) will give any lemon-ade stand entrepreneurs the following supplies for their own lemonade stand: $5 worth of lemonade crystals, paper cups, 2 bright orange btww t-shirts, and one 11"x17" promotional sign (to go along with the awesome hand-made ones that they make!). in exchange for this, entrepreneurs need to do three things: put up their stand any time during btww (May 28 to June 3), let the btww organizing Committee know the exact location of the stand so that they can let people where to find it, and email btww kamloops one photo, which will be put on the btww kamloops website and facebook site (the photo has to show all entre-preneurs involved in the lemonade stand, the actual stand, and the stand signs). entrepreneurs can charge whatever they want for the lemon-ade and keep any money they make! to register your stand and to get your supplies, please contact Marcia dick as soon as possible at 778-470-5695 or [email protected].

the City of kamloops is pleased to help bring inspirehealth, Canada’s foremost integrative Cancer Care Centre, back to kamloops to provide information and care for people living with a diagnosis of can-cer. drs. teresa Clarke and Joe schnurr of inspirehealth will present a free public talk on “healthy Choices to Prevent Cancer and recurrence” and the signature Life Program, a two-day workshop, designed for people living with cancer and their support-ers, family and friends.

the bar safe Program is a strategic partnership between the kamloops rCMP, bC Liquor and Licensing branch, the City of kamloops and local business owners in addressing the issues arising from the early morning bar flush.

the rCMP have worked closely with the owners of licensed establishments in the down-town core, inspectors from bC Liquor and Licensing branch, the taxi industry and the City of kamloops to help create awareness around the impact of liquor service and the bar flush, and in seeking cooperation with creating solutions to the issues.

the rCMP is committed to adopting measures that will enhance the safety of people and the protection of property. Licensed establishments are adopting a mutually acceptable and monitored Code of Conduct, which is a positive step in keeping the downtown licensed premise environment enjoyable, desirable and safe.

there will be additional presence and monitoring in the downtown.the City of kamloops has been in contact with the taxi industry to address issues, result-

ing in the implementation of a pilot project for taxi stands.these taxi stands, which will be located on the 400 block of Lansdowne and the 200 block

of Victoria street, will help move people out of the downtown core during the bar flush. the taxi industry has agreed to support the use of these taxi stands between the hours of 10:00pm and 3:00am.

Local businesses in areas around the taxi stands are encouraged to contact the City if there are any concerns or issues arising from this program.

Mr. Lohman is an internationally rec-ognized figure in the museum community. he was director of the London Museum prior to his appointment at the rbCM. in 2000, he was selected to head the iziko Museums of Cape town south Africa, a group

of 15 prominent cul-tural institutions where he was credited with transforming the entire south African museum sector. Mr. Lohman is a former Chairman of the international Council of Museums (iCoM) and a former member of the uk national Commission for unesCo’s Cultural Committee. he is also a Professor of Museum design and Communication at bergen national Academy of the Arts (norway) and Chairman of the national Museum of warsaw, Poland.

raffle WinnerS!

The Kamloops Branch of the British Columbia Old Time Fiddlers’ Association recently conducted a raffle under B.C. Gaming license # 40000. The draw was held on May 5 at the groups’ 28th annual Old Time Fiddle contest. Pictured here (L-R) is Florence Tellier, treasurer of the Kamloops Old Time Fiddlers presenting the first prize winner, Carol Swift of Pritchard, with the homemade Quilt, along with second prize winner, Anne Benson, with $200 and third prize winner, Martha Desmond, with $100.

Big city with small town charmAs a fourth generation kamloopsian, it

would be safe to say that i will always call this city home – no matter where i end up. i grew up listening to my grandfather’s sto-ries of attending stuart wood elementary and working in our family’s old depart-ment store. i went to south kamloops secondary where i had a teacher who had taught my aunt 20 years prior! no matter where i go i seem to find someone who has stories to share about members of my family. when i was younger, i would often wonder why my dad chose to stay in kamloops instead of moving to a bigger city. but as i have now traveled to other places around the world, i can understand and appreciate this “small town” as a place that has everything and more to offer. now i see that kamloops really is the perfect place to live, work

and play. with picture-perfect views of the mountains; endless summer and winter activities; and a bustling downtown core, there isn’t much more you could need for a place to live.

kamloops offers great opportunities for golfing, hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, rafting, or even soaking summer sun.

My favorite thing about our city, how-ever, is the people who live here. i have yet to meet a person visiting kamloops who has not been impressed by the friendliness of merchants and locals. As a new ambas-

sador for the CAP team i could not be more excited to share my love for kamloops with visiting tourists. i am looking forward to contributing to the friendly and helpful atmosphere downtown this summer. if you see us around in our red shirts, feel free to say hello!

the interior savings Centre will be a hub of activity on friday, June 8 as the John howard society hosts the 3rd Annual scooter ro-deo, partnering again with the rCMP and the City of kamloops. dawn hyrcun Ceo of the John howard so-ciety sums it up nicely when she says, “while the scooter rodeo may focus on safety first, the activities held during the day are a fun way of improving scooter safe-ty for those who require a scooter in their day to day lives. it is our hope that all of you who par-ticipate in the scooter rodeo have lots of fun and learn something new as well.”

this year we en-courage riders to get all gussied up western style, deck out their rides and get in touch with their inner rodeo star. there are prizes to be had for those that go the extra mile and new high visibility flags for the first 100 riders.

one thing is for cer-tain, as our population ages and we see the in-crease in the number of these machines on our sidewalks and streets, the need for public awareness is crucial.

As in past years, we’re keeping our focus on the obstacle/manoeu-vrability course, oper-ated by the rCMP Aux-iliary. the challenges

each rider faces on the course are no differ-ent then what they en-counter in their every-day scenarios. ramps, curves, uneven sur-faces, turns, reversing, parking and many more situations are instilled in the course. Consta-ble George buttuls will be on hand to pass on a wide range of safety messages and tips for

all par-ticipants.

from a transportation department standpoint, busy city sidewalks and roadways are a concern for Colleen Lepik of the City of kamloops. She finds that the rodeo helps to educate scooter users with the informa-tion needed to follow the same rules and precau-tions as pedestrians. safe

mobility, enhances the quality of life for our se-niors and disabled popu-lation, plain and simple. As more and more mo-torized scooter and pow-er chair users enjoy mo-bility in our community, making sure they under-stand how to do so safely is key.

if you or someone you know is using a mo-torized power chair or scooter this event is for you. Please join us as we celebrate the John how-ard society 3rd Annual scooter rodeo, friday June 8 between 10am and 2pm in the upper and lower parking lots behind the interior sav-ings Centre. if you’d

fraud scam alert issuedPolice are again warning kamloops residents of a phony fund raising

scam being carried out by suspects representing themselves as being aligned with starbucks.

on May 10, a resident was walking through northills Centre when she noticed a male sitting at a table with starbucks goodie bags laid out. the male told the woman that he was participating in a fund raising campaign for a soccer team and that the goodie bags were on sale for ten dollars. the man also said that they were not set up to take cash and he produced a portable, stand alone debit machine. the woman swiped her card and left the mall. Later that day the woman became suspicious of the transaction and when she checked her accounts she found that $100 had been taken out of an AtM and that $417 was removed when a fraud cheque was cashed in Vernon.

the victim immediately contacted her bank, froze all transactions on her financial accounts and made arrangements to change her Personal identification number (Pin).

One of the hardest issues I have consulting patients on in their blood sugar management is the effect that stress has on their level of control as it is sporadic and un-predictable in nature. Stress can have many negative effects on your health leading to an increase risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Stress has a direct effect on blood glucose lev-els since your body releases stress hor-mones as part of the “fight or flight” response to stress. For most diabetics, this leads to an elevation in blood glucose lev-els, but for some (in particular in Type 1), it can lead to low blood glucose levels. Additionally, stress can affect your blood glucose lev-els negatively indirectly by caus-ing you to not take as good care of yourself as you should, such as not having time to plan proper meals, increasing alcohol intake, and/or decreasing exercise. Therefore, stress management is a very im-portant aspect of lifestyle manage-ment for a diabetic, but is often not discussed by your doctor and there are not a lot of readily available re-sources in the community to sup-port you with this.

As we believe in taking a ho-listic approach to managing your health, encompassing body, mind and spirit, we have decided to host a stress management workshop for our diabetic patients in June in order to assist you with this is-sue. This workshop will be lead by Amelie Manshadi, who is a regis-tered nurse and a licensed spiritual healer. She will focus on identify-ing your personal sources of stress as these are unique to each individ-ual and you may not be aware of all of them. Then, she will explore what effects these stressors have

on your blood sugar levels and overall health. Finally, Amelie will review techniques that you can use to help you become more resilient to stress and help you control your

diabetes better.In order to prepare

yourself for this work-shop, it is a good idea to start evaluating the effects of stress on your health. Take the time to write down what your common stressors are and how you physically feel when they occur. If possible, take a mo-

ment to test your blood sugars when you are feeling emotionally stressed in order to see firsthand how this affects you. One suggestion is to write down how stressed you feel on a scale of 1 to 10 and then write down your corresponding blood glucose level beside it. By doing this, Amelie will be more equipped to help you so that stress does not reek havoc on your blood glucose control.

The workshop will be on Tues-day, June 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the pharmacy. As it is dur-ing supper time, we would like to make it a low glycemic index pot-luck, so please bring your favourite dish to share. If you are interested in attending our Diabetes Stress Management Workshop, please contact the pharmacy to sign up at 250-372-2223. It you have a loved one or support person in your life please bring them along. It may be valuable for them to gain this knowledge with you in order to help you apply what you learn in your everyday life. We look forward to hosting this event and helping you in taking another step in managing your diabetes and pre-venting any future complications.
