Proud sPonsor of bike to work week

A new concept is sweeping Canada, including kamloops, taking the traditional ‘fundraiser’ model and making it benefit the community, sponsors and local artists. timeraiser is Canada’s premier volunteer matching event with the goal of making it simple to find relevant and meaningful opportunities that fit busy lifestyles. social fire Consulting and Volunteer kamloops have partnered to stage a unique event to make it easier for people to get involved in our community.

The first Kamloops Timeraiser is an independently run event that is part volunteer fair, part silent art auction and part night on the town. throughout the evening, at-tendees meet with different agen-cies where their skills are matched to the needs of local non-profits. representatives from over 20 dif-ferent charitable agencies have plans to attend the event. once a match is made, the individual be-comes eligible to bid on artwork in an auction. the big twist is rather than bid money, you bid volunteer hours. After tallying the results, the emcee will announce and display the names of all the auction win-ners. winning bidders have a year to complete their volunteer hours and in that time, the art is on dis-play at corporate sponsor’s of-fices. Once the volunteer pledge

has been completed, the winner is able to take the artwork home as a reminder of their good will. timeraiser volunteers, especially those who win art, are encouraged to spread their hours among sev-eral agencies throughout the year.

kamloops timeraiser will show-case the incredible artwork of over 10 local, emerging artists on wednesday, June 20 from 7:00pm - 10:00pm. Cactus Jacks saloon nightclub, 135 fifth Avenue will be the site of this exciting, new

event. After the auction ends, the celebration continues with live en-tertainment featuring kira from the local band earthbound. Proper id is required and light snacks will be served.

bC Hydro has developed a draft plan to meet provincial electric-ity demand forecasted to grow by 50 per cent over the next 20 years as a result of economic expansion and population growth. the inte-grated resource Plan looks at the most cost-effective mix of conser-vation, generation and transmission resources to ensure customers con-tinue to enjoy clean, safe and reli-able electricity at affordable prices.

recommendations in the draft plan include conserving more elec-tricity through voluntary programs, incentives, codes and standards –increasing the energy savings tar-get to 9,800 gigawatt hours per year (the equivalent of close to 891,000 homes).

More power generation, includ-ing the site C dam currently in the environmental and regulatory re-view stage, and reinvesting in ex-isting infrastructure – for example, adding a sixth generating unit at revelstoke and buying more elec-tricity from clean energy producers, including wind and run-of-river.

Given the long lead time nec-essary to plan and construct new

power infrastructure, bC Hydro has to look well into the future. fif-ty years ago, that meant having the foresight to build large hydro gen-erating facilities to meet the energy needs of baby boomers’ growing families and the province’s forest-ry-driven economy.

today, bC Hydro energy planners use sophisticated modelling tech-niques to calculate customers’ fu-ture needs, taking into account ev-erything from economic forecasts to population projections. Having electricity ready when it’s needed

is essential to supporting new eco-nomic development– whether it’s new homes, new mines, the high-tech industry or natural gas compa-nies looking to hook up to our clean electricity grid.

in 2011, bC Hydro conducted province-wide consultation to gath-er input into development of the in-tegrated resource Plan, and from now until July 6, bC Hydro is ask-ing for public feedback on the draft plan. A separate consultation pro-cess for first nations is also under-way, involving regional workshops

this summer.if you want to get involved read

the draft plan and integrated re-source Plan discussion guide at www.bchydro.com/irp. Provide feedback through an online feed-back form. register for a hosted webinar on June 25 and 26 and at-tend an open house scheduled in Vancouver at sfu Harbour Centre, June 12, 6:00pm-9:00pm. feed-back received through the consulta-tion process will help shape the fi-nal integrated resource Plan to be completed by the end of 2012.

BC Hydro seeks public feedback on long-term power plan

registration is required in advance of the event. tickets are $20 and can be purchased on-line at http://kamloops.timeraiser.ca. it’s likely the tickets will sell out before the night of the timeraiser so it’s best to buy them early as there is a maximum capacity. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door. when you check in at the registration desk on the night of the event, your personalized welcome kit will be waiting for you.

september kuromi of social fire Consulting and coordinator of kamloops timeraiser said, “All attendees are encouraged to try out volun-teering and this event is meant to be a relaxed

way to learn about the opportunities in kam-loops.” september said she was pleased with the financial response and said that all the art-work was purchased with sponsorship money – a substantial injection of business into the lo-cal artist community. she said, “ i want to give a big thank you the amazing local sponsors that have helped us pay ‘market value’ for this incredible artwork. their donation is support-ing creative people in our community.” Local businesses that made this event possible are nri distribution inc, Les Consenheim – ray-mond James, Andrina benazic CA, kamloops this week, CifM, studi09 Creative services, the echo, Musings & Mud Coaching stu-

dio, domtar, io secure and rotary daybreak. they are still opportunities to be a corporate sponsor to facilitate the purchase of more art and becoming a supporter of this great event. employees of sponsor companies get to attend for free – so if this sounds like something your office would love to partake in, get your com-pany to become a sponsor.

there will be opportunities from all different sectors and the hope of timeraiser is that peo-ple will have a really positive volunteer experi-ence and continue to volunteer even after their pledge period.

the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) hon-oured 37 of its members with the presentation of the Queen elizabeth ii diamond Jubilee Medal. Awarded to Canadians who have made significant contribu-tions, the medals were presented during the CMA’s 65th national Conference. the CMA was chosen as one of the few non-governmental organizations invited to recommend these limited number of com-memorative medals.

in their presentation to Governor General of Canada, david Johnston who oversaw the approval process, the CMA acknowledged dr. brings together the interna-tional transart Collective and kamloops artists in a myriad of events, exhibi-tions, lectures and work-shops. A truly global event, bringing artworks, and some transart alum-ni from across north America and countries diverse as iceland, Japan, Austria, Germany, egypt

and the Philippines, to converge in kamloops for a series of workshops and exhibitions.

Coordinated by kamloops artist tricia sellmer, member of the transarts Collective, Connecting the dots grew in a very organic way, as sellmer initiated collaborations or conver-sations between artists

who she perceived had complementary areas of fascination and methods of working. Connecting the dots presents art-works in contemporary forms including video, installation, painting, printmaking, sound art, photography, digital media, basketry, perfor-mance, and sculpture.

events will be held at thompson rivers university Art Gallery, old Main building’ Arnica Artist run Centre, old Courthouse, 7 west seymour street, kamloops Art Gallery, 465 Victoria street and kamloops Printmakers’ studio 102b-925 McMaster way.

CaP team kiosk presents Kamloops’ Finestwhether you’re a long-term resident or

a traveler who’s simply passing through, there is something special to be found in kamloops for each and every person. we, the CAP team, make it our goal to assist as many individuals as possible in find-ing hidden gems existing within our city limits. we annually utilize our kiosk to succeed at this feat as it is well equipped with brochures and area maps. it’s only been out for its first full week of the 2012 season and has already assisted well over 150 individuals.

Additionally, the kiosk acts as a meeting point for our CAP team in the center of the downtown. with our patrol area covering such an extensive area, from 1st to 10th Avenue and from Columbia street to the river, we may not always be found exactly where you are looking for us. the kiosk serves as the one excep-

tion. Here, you are guaranteed to find a CAP team member who has direct radio contact with all other team members on shift. the individual manning the kiosk also has a cell phone equipped with useful contacts such as by-law, the non-emer-gency police line and several outreach groups who are happy to be called upon to answer tricky questions or to supply further assistance.

the kiosk will be set up on the south side of the 300 block of Victoria street every Monday to saturday from 11:00am

until 5:00pm from now until August 24th. if your business would like to be represented at our

CAP team kiosk for the summer season, feel free to give us a call at 250-572-3017. keep an eye out for us on the streets in our red shirts and stop by to say hello anytime!

the kamloops bid Committee for the 2015 Pan Am Junior track and field Championships were pleased with the strength of their bid pre-sentation, made to Athletics Can-ada last week in ottawa. while edmonton was awarded the event, Athletics Canada, recognizing the strength of the kamloops bid and the desire to host, instead asked the kamloops Committee to host the 2014 under 23 north Ameri-ca, Central America and Caribbean (nACAC) Championships. this is an equally significant international track and field event, governed by

the iAAf (international Associa-tion of Athletics federations).

two athletes per country per event could attend this event. the esti-mate is that approximately 500 ath-letes, coaches and team staff would attend the nACAC u23 Champi-onships.

“we are excited to get the chance to work with Athletics Canada and showcase kamloops to the nA-CAC Athletics and look forward to a fantastic event in 2014,” said by-ron McCorkell, Parks, recreation and Cultural services director for the City of kamloops.

“this is an event that will at-tract significant attention for Ka-mloops. for the nACAC Athletes it would be a stepping stone to the 2016 olympics in brazil,” said bob Cowden, Chair of the nACAC - kamloops 2014 - track and field.

“the kamloops track and field Club is excited to host this event as it will be the second high-level iAAf sanctioned event in kamloops. the athletes involved are usually pre-paring for a world Championships or olympic Games,” commented Judy Armstrong, President of kam-loops track and field Club.

why are they doing this, you might ask? because they think it makes good sense! electric clothes dryers are the most energy-intensive of any household appliance – and it’s often unnecessary to use them, especially in bC’s southern interior. kamloops naturally enjoys perfect drying weather, and using a clothesline can allow residents to reduce their annual energy bills by $50 – and that’s based on hanging clothes outside only half the time! sun drying your clothes reduces wear and tear on them, naturally disinfects them, and eliminates the need to go near the dreaded lint filter! You’ll also get that “fresh breeze” scent as a thank you bonus, direct from Mother nature – no chemicals required.

to kick-start the solar Laundry Project, the City of kamloops has joined countless other conservation-minded municipalities around the world in proclaiming June 2 to 8 as international Clothesline week. the project fits perfectly with the intent of the City’s sustainability Plan which commits the City to encouraging and facilitating the increased use of clean, alternative energy sources in kamloops, in order to reduce community energy use 20 percent by 2020, compared to 2010 levels.

Cheryl kabloona, chair of the kamloops bCseA Chapter, says “we’ve all heard about rules and bylaws that prevent us from using clotheslines, but in fact, the City of kamloops doesn’t have a bylaw like that. strata bylaws or building schemes in the newer neighbourhoods might apply to you although they’re rarely enforced. if this is a concern, remember that we can all hang clothes to dry indoors. i’ve been doing that for years. i tumble wet clothes without heat for a couple of minutes and then hang them on hangers over the bathtub. by the next morning, they’re dry and ready to go!”

Win a free clothesline!James Gordon, Gisela Ruckert and Rob Purdy are hung up on clotheslines for the BCSEA’s Solar Laundry Project.

the first of two meetings open to the public, is scheduled for June 14 from 9:00am until 12:00pm. this will provide an overview of the current state of men’s health and mental health followed by a presentation given by James thompson from tru school of nursing.

this first session, “Any Mother’s son will do” aims to acknowledge the differences of genders for men’s health in a talk geared towards professionals wanting to incorporate “inten-tionality” into their practice. the presentation will cover where men can seek help, why acting like a ‘man’ puts men at risk for negative health outcomes and how men’s issues are related to the feminist movement.

the morning discussion will close by looking at future local directions for improving men’s health for the benefit of men as

well as women.the general public are encour-

aged to attend and provide input during a Public forum & Panel discussion on Men’s Health, Mental Health and fathers on June 13 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Panellists will include Matt McLean of Ask wellness, doug knowles from tru’s MeCA program, Chris Hunt, a Mental Health Clinician and Jeff Conners, ubCo student.

those interested can drop in and find answers to questions such as why men die four years earlier than women, are three times more likely to commit suicide, lead in 14 of the 15 primary causes of death and make up for 95 percent of workplace deaths. Coordinator, Jeff Connors noted, “Men’s health often falls upon women.”

bring your questions and con-cerns regarding men’s issues and find out how to support your grandfathers, fathers, brothers, sons and partners. Questions and confirmations can be emailed to [email protected]
