Dear HSGC members, devotees, and temple supporters,
It gives a great pleasure to come back to the executive committee again, after a gap of two years. For those of you who may not know, I had the privilege to serve as the secretary of the execu-tive committee for two years in 2010 and 2011 and as the president for a year in 2012. I am grateful to be given a chance to serve again and I promise you all to serve the temple and the community with utmost dedication and humility. I want to congratulate the outgoing executive committee for doing a very fine job. Although I will continue to benefit from the presence of several committee members who are continuing on this year, we are going to miss several dedicated members from the outgoing committee and I want to acknowledge their contributions and thank them all. I am extremely grateful to our outgoing president Jitubhai Patel. During his 2 year term, the temple saw many successes. The most noteworthy of these successes is the completion of the Marg project. Now we have a very high quality road that provides access to the temple from a proper, two lane road and which in turn, opens up the path for future growth of the temple. In addition, his committee also oversaw expansion of the parking lot, in-stallation of elevator, and significant upkeep of the temple building. We also saw growing attendance at the temple, enthusiastic participation of new members, and many new programs. We have a very attractive and informative website now. I also want to thank other outgoing EC members including Rakesh Patel (Maintenance Committee), Vinit Rastogi (Education Committee), Manish Srivastava (Membership and Fundraising Committee), and Geeta Mehan (Communications and Editor of Ara-dhana). All of them have served the temple with sincerity and dedication. I am sure that they will all continue to provide their unstinted support and wise counsel to the new executive committee. The New Year is already off to a very good start and we have a fairly long list of outstanding tasks. Our first task is to consolidate on the successes realized so far. We are very fortunate to have a most unique temple. This is an institution that emphasizes unity. The core belief of the Hindu Dhar-ma is that the God is one but there are multiple ways of reaching the God. We can see in our temple that we worship different deities, in different ways and in different languages, all under one roof. Our priests reflect this diversity and the unity as does the executive committee. Our temple belongs equal-ly to all who believe the Hindu Dharma and its philosophy. We need to work in that spirit to take the temple forward and to make it very strong, not just for the years to come but for the generations to come. We have many challenges ahead of us and we are well aware of many of these challenges. Some of these challenges are strengthening our children’s education programs, increasing communi-ty participation, simplifying internal administration, increasing paid membership, future expansion of the temple including retirement homes as well as a multi-purpose community center. I would urge the entire community to strongly support the temple by coming to temple regularly, by participating in the cultural and community programs, by availing of the wonderful opportunities for self-development by the temple and last but not least, by providing financial support to the temple. I am requesting all of you who are not members of the Hindu Society of Greater Cincinnati, to become members as soon as possible. The temple belongs to all of you and it is your responsibility to contribute towards sus-taining this institution that provides us place to bond with our religious, cultural, and social values. On behalf of the new executive committee and our priests, I am looking forward to cooperation and sup-port from all of you. Best regards, Deepak Dixit President, HSGC

Significance of Holi Festival
Holi is one of the most vibrant festivals that are celebrated with immense fervour in the whole of India. It is a major festi-val that is celebrated with unbridled joy. The fun and frolic that is associated with Holi is unmatched with any other festi-val across the world. Holi is celebrated as a mark of the arrival of spring season and therefore is a festival of gaiety that
is celebrated with colours. It is thus a celebration of relentless enthusiasm, joy and hope amongst people who cut across all sections of the society.
The Legend of Holi
There are innumerable stories that are associated with Holi. The stories vary along with the states of India spanning from the west, to the north, south and east. The roots of the festival that are believed by people belonging to various states and regions of India are depicted in numerous scriptures. It is essentially the mythology that is associated with this festival that makes it so special to everyone. If you look at the various legends, the most popular amongst them are the stories asso-ciated with Lord Krishna and his consort Radhika and the legend of Holika, the demon.
The name of the festival is believed by most to have come from Holika. There is this tradition of lighting bonfires with dry twigs and leaves gathered from the fields and forests to commemorate Holika Dahan. This is the ritualistic manner of warding off all evil and welcoming the good.
The story so goes that Prahlad was the son of Hiranyakashipu, the fierce demon king. He had great aspirations to rule the earth, heaven and beyond. So he challenged the Gods and vanquished the divine army with his immense power. But his son was a noble soul who prayed and chanted the name of Lord Vishnu much to his father’s ire as Hirnyakashipu consid-ered Lord Vishnu to be his enemy. So he pronounced the death of his son by throwing him on fire as Prahlad refused to stop his chanting.
Holika was the demon king’s sister and she had this boon of remaining untouched by fire. So she sat on a fire with Prahlad on her lap, but the little boy remained unaffected by the grace of the Lord and Holika was burnt to death alive. Since then this day has been marked as a victory of the good over evil.
