    DevelopingSustainableEnergyGoalsinSriLanka

    As 2015 approaches theUN is aiming to layout the next set ofDevelopmentGoals.Global debates are

    underwayonwhat the framework andGoals for thenext 15 years should look like. Thediscussions are

    revolvinglargelyaroundthreeissues:poverty,inequalityandtheenvironment.Morethananyothertimein

    the recent past, there is a greater effort to put in place a sustainable development pathway. In this

    discussion,energyisacknowledgedasakeyissue.

    In the post 2015 development agenda, it is highly likely that Sustainable Energy will be a goal. The

    proposed targetsby theUNleadprocessaim to reduce relianceon fossil fuels, increaseenergyefficiency,

    improve access to energy, and increase the use of renewable energy. These targets have an impact on

    developing countries as itwill also determine policies, aid, trade, technology, partnerships on economic

    growthandpoverty reduction.While thisdiscussion takesplaceataglobal level, itprovidesawindowof

    opportunityforusinSriLankatodiscussourownoptionsforputtinginplaceasustainableenergypathway

    andseehow,onapragmaticlevel,thiscanbetranslatedintopractice.

    TheEnergyForumwiththeCentreforPovertyAnalysis(CEPA),willcohostaworkshopthatwillaimto:

    GenerateadiscussionontheimperativesofsustainableenergyforSriLanka Synthesizekeyissuesrelatedtoputtinginplacesustainableenergygoalsforthepowersector CreateanetworkthatwillpushforasustainableenergypolicyandpracticeinSriLanka

    Weinviteyoutoparticipateinthiseventwhichwilltakeplace

    attheSriLankaFoundationInstituteonthe20th

    ofFebruary2014.

    Thesessionswillprovideanoverviewoftheenergysector,andconcentrateononeofthemainissues:power

    generation.Atentativeagendaisattached.

    Theworkshop isaimedatbringingtogetherkeyprofessionals fromdifferentsectorsgovernment,private

    sectors,academicsandcivilsocietywhohaveaninterestandknowledgeonthetopictosharetheirideasand

    opinions.
