7 “I don’t want to go to school,” announced Ani. She threw the bag
and hit the floor angrily. Her mother looked her from the kitchen .she said “But you love
school, Ani!” She gave Ani a fried banana and crusty1 for lunch.
Ani saw the bundle of washed cloths which her mother washed early in the morning. She thought of her father who washed people’s dirty clothes.
“The kids laugh at her Dad,” Ani said. She threw the banana. “They
say he smells like rubbish2 and “Where’d you get these shoes, Ani? The dump?” Her mother looked sad and tired.
“And there’s an art contest3,” Ani told. Mama looked surprised4.
“What’s wrong with that? You are a brilliant artist. You’ll win that contest.”
“How can I even enter it, Mama? All the kids will buy paint, pens and clay etc.

Ani and her mother looked each other silently. There was hot. The mother touched Ani’s shoulder and said, “There is a solution to these problems” and “You can solve these problems. You just have to find the key.”
In the evening, the broken lanterns, bicycle chains, and old bottles are
sparkled5 like treasures6. Ani had her own treasure box, full of old buttons, buckles, keys, beads, bits of coloured glass, zips. She had cleaned them carefully and kept them in a box.
Ani watched her father. He wore sarong. He carried soaps and a scrubbing
brush. She knew her father worked hard. She thought “Those kids just don’t know,”. She felt very sad.
That night Ani dreamed that she became butterfly soaring above the kids . The next morning, mama looked at Ani curiously7? “Did you find the
solution Ani “she asked. “I’m not sure,” said Ani as she finished her fried rice. She grabbed her schoolbag, flashed a smile and went out.
After school, Ani opened her treasure box. Her sisters were laughing when
she drew pictures in the dust outside. She collected these from several places. She was thinking of her dream.
Glue was a problem for Ani. She prepared glue with raw egg. Her
grandmother always said, “Raw egg is the best glue in Indonesia”

9 By Wednesday she had collected everything, including a half tin of
bright blue paint. Her father had given it to Ani. “Did you know,” asked Ani on Friday “that there’s an art display at
school tomorrow afternoon?” The whole family looked at her. “It’s a contest, really. A professional artist from Jakarta is the judge.”
“Do you think we should go?” asked her father. “Oh yes!” said Ani “I think it might be interesting.” “I think so, too,” said Mama. As they reached at the school auditorium, Ani and her family heard
noises in the auditorium. The auditorium was overflowed with people and colour. The walls were
covered with paintings, and tables were loaded with sculptures8. In the middle of the room a blue butterfly was swinging . It was made of buttons, beads, and bits of glass and zips. It was hanging on a single thread .it was chiming as they touched one another. It was a dancing row keys.
The butterfly continued to turn. The keys kept chiming. Everyone admired and praised Ani’s for her creations. She knew that everyone was thinking about the creation that it is wonderful. Her father put his arm around her shoulders and squeezed9 hard. Ani could smell the good clean smell of him. She squeezed back. (550 Words)
