Established in 1642, Denvir’s is steeped in history and is the perfect setting for a drink, a bite to eat and good Craic in the heart of Downpatrick. We have a long tradition of sheltering travellers and will endeavour to ensure that your stay will be a memorable experience.

The oldest surviving coaching inn in Ireland and now a grade ‘A’ listed building, Denvir’s has been extensively restored, retaining its original charm and character. With six attractive bedrooms, a restaurant, lounge and snug bars as well as two rooms for hire; there are many reasons to visit us.

Welcome to Denvir’s

The first records of Denvir’s date back to 1642; although the building itself is thought to be older still. It was the first inn to be established in Downpatrick; belonging to John and Ann McGreevy, whose names can be seen etched in the stone on the front of the building along with the date. John had been a soldier in the army of Charles I and acceptedthe land as payments for his services. The name ‘Denvir’s’ has been associated with the coaching inn from the late eighteenth century.

From 1790 to 1803 Downpatrick, and namely Denvir’s was the focal point of the United Irishmen Rebellion. The leaders of the movement Russell, Wolfe Tone, Emmet and McCracken, met regularly in Denvir’s to plan for the failed 1798 and 1803 rebellions. Another famous figure to pass through was Daniel O’Connell, leader of the Irish

emancipation movement of the early 19th Century.During his repeal compaign he visited Downpatrick anddined at Denvir’s. He held a speech from the window ofthe drawing room.

In 1789 a member of the Denvir family from County Downemigrated to the USA; he was the grandfather of GeneralJames W. Denver, who went on to found the city of Denver, Colorado.

The recess in front of Denvir’s bewteen the front door and the box room window is said to be a debtors’ sanctuary.According to tradition when the cathedral was in ruins the sanctuary was carried down English Street to the front of Denvir’s.
