At Bumangon Siya Original Composition by Buch Dacanay Written by Buch Dacanay Summary : A Spanish priests talks about how all Rizal’s life he’d known him. Baptising him, telling him off when he pokes around his church, and being his friend. As Rizal grows older and so the story goes, the timeline of when Rizal writes Noli Me Tangere happens and infuriates the Spanish, even the friendly priest (of no name). But he claims that even so, when Rizal asks him for help, he cooperates. Which soon backfires on him and gets him captured and imprisoned in Fort Santiago. Realizing soon that Rizal might not be one to return the favour and help free him, he learns that while in jail that Rizal has been helping him at home instead, helping his nephew get into Ateneo de Manila, teaching his youngest sister how to read and write, and helping his dear father with his cursed blindness (As Rizal is an eye doctor already)

Thankful, the priest is very grateful of his help. So much so that he returns this in the most very odd fashion. He starts a cult, sermoning Rizal’s books to anyone he can find, and eventually declaring him ‘Bagong Cristo’ as he is Christ and will save us all.

Even though we see Rizal clearly doesn’t want anything to do with this. More: Sa awit na ito pinili kong mas gamitin yung Spanish-Guitar sounding acoustic genre para mas linawin sa mga manonood na ito’y ginanap noong panahon ng Español, at ang mismong ay mula España. Masaya naman din palang lumuwa ng ganitong klaseng genre ng music, and with that, I think nag-resonate na din sa mga ibang mga awit yung pagka-acoustic Spanish style niya of sound, rather than hinahabol ko yung mga anong usong genre ngayong panahon. In fact, Totoo din pala yung parteng may kulto (or group) na pinupuri si Rizal bilang bagong Cristo, at pinaniniwalaan ding nabuhay siya kahit after Fort Santiago at tumira lang ito sa mga bundok at hindi na nagpakita ulit. At iba, kahit ngayon ay naniniwalang buhay PA RIN siya at isang immortal na tao.

--Wala lang na-intriga lang ako sa ideyang yon na nabasa ko sa “Rizal Without The Overcoat” ni Ambeth Ocampo, at dinisisyonang magagamit ko yon sa dula. Easter Eggs:

ng pag-jingle ng tunog na parang tambourine (Na in fact, ay mix lang ng ilang mga spoon and forks sa kamay ko dahil wala akong totoong tambourine sa bahay. Hahaha.)

• Sa dulo maririnig ang panibagong pagpalit ng uri ng pag-awit sa ‘Bagong Cristo, bagong buhay’. Na sila’y madami nang nagcha-‘chant’. Isang twist na interesting at nakakatakot ding isipin. Well, para sa akin.

• Hindi ako exactly sure kung mayroon ng Malate Church nung pinanganak si Rizal, hehe. So ginawa ko nalang “Binasbasan” siya sa lyrics, so if ever magka-prublema at nagawa pala ito nang mamaya-maya pa nung timeline ay yon ang excuse ko. HAHAHA.

• I’m still thinking (And should probably research) kung meron na ba talagang Ateneo de Manila nung panahon ni Rizal.

• Gusto ko yung idea na yung song, ay parang nagse-sermon lang yung Priest sa isang crowd, pero tungkol kay Rizal ang sine-sermon niya. Cool yon.

Pero hindi nakinig ang bata, umalis siya at bumalik na may dalang libro, puno ng kontrobersyal at mga salitang pang-demonyo. Ayaw ko, pero nang humingi siya ng tulong, hindi na ako nagpaasa.

Kulang pa ba ang nagawa ko, Diyos? Nahuli na ako at nakagapos Isang Padreng Español na ikinulong sa Intramuros Habang nakatanaw sa labas at himpapawid. Hinihintay ang pagbalik at pagligtas ni Pepe’ng maliit.

Ningning Bitwuin (ft. Bea Racoma) Original Composition by Buch Dacanay

Written by Buch Dacanay Summary: First of all i would like to thank my very enthusiastic and great friend, Bea Racoma for doing Josephine Bracken’s voice in the recording. Palagi akong kinikilig kapag marinig yung dialogue namin. AHAHAHA. The song is a serenade from Rizal to Josephine Bracken while they stayed in Dapitan the first time they met to help get Josephine’s father’s eyes fixed from Rizal...and in that time Rizal courted Josephine, that sly dog. Wahaha. In love with her already during the time, he sings a song truly from the heart to the young lady. But as it is true from the heart, it will be in Tagalog, sa what will hurt is that Josephine doesn’t know what Rizal is singing, or is singing about.

Perhaps that’s what Rizal just wants. And while the song goes on, the town’s folks beginning of a festival chimes in and plays well with the song. A choreographed step-dance, a happy yelling of men, and beautiful singing of the entire town reacts with the song. In the end, Jospehine eventually shares that she can understand a little bit of Tagalog and can actually understand what Rizal is saying. And that breaks his heart a little… but also enlightens him the same way. More: This is the first ever song i had written for the play. When it still hasn’t had a title, when it was still just entirely an idea, when it was still going nowhere and all i had was this song which i had also written the same night as i had thought of it. That’s why it sounds so simple, because it WAS simple. SIMPLY made, if to put it in better words.

But in a way...that’s what makes it unique and entirely special from all the other tracks. Ito’y awit na re-imagined mula sa isang lumang dula na isinulat ng Tatay ko about the same subject. Pero the play was entirely about it, and just that. Noong (fictionalized) na niligawan ni Rizal si Josephine sa Dapitan. (“Borneo” ang pamagat, maaring mai-search sa Facebook. Itinatampok sila Guelan Luarca, Ian Segarra atbp) Maganda yung imahe sa utak ko, ng eksena kung saan hina-harana ni Rizal si Jo sa gubat na alam niyang hindi siya maiintindihan ni Josephine sa kanyang Tagalog, at sa likod mamaya-maya ay magfe-festival ang mga taong bayan at magsasayawan; at mama-mangha lang si Josephine sa ganda at gulo ng pista.

Easter Eggs:

• This would be one of the songs in the entirety of the musical na yung character (si Rizal) ay aware na kumakanta siya ng awit.

• Sa (01:17) ng kanta maririnig ang quote na “From Joe to Jo”. Where they shared that friends called them those short names that, coincidentally sound alike. Jose is “Joe” while “Jo” is Josephine.

• Kinikilig ako, hahaha. The recording of the Jo-Rizal dialogue was separate from the original recording! Bea and I recorded that bit on her phone while waiting to watch a show in UP Diliman. I am grateful that she helped me make me feel like this was a real thing, and that it was important—important to other people also. I did not pay her with anything but hugs. Sobrang salamat ulit, bb!!!

• I recorded the guitar of this track very last minute so what happened was that i did not have a tempo. But i am quite proud because it is on time pretty well; meaning, it doesn’t drag or speed up at any point in the song, haha.

• The Town Folk’s singing as the chorus of the song is actually just a compilation of my voices all singing the same melody, and in different voices, and a couple of harmonies.

• Dine-debate ko pa sa sarili kung redundant ba yung “Amazing discoveries to discover” AHAHAHA. Kasi parang hindi naman e...medyo cute siya; at make-sense naman.

Si Mariang Makiling Original Composition by Simo Dacanay Written by Dr. Jose Rizal Lyrical Arrangement by Manny Pambid Re-Mixed by Buch Dacanay Summary: Trying to get a group of children to bed, Rizal sings them a story of which they ask for. A story about Mariang Makiling, a beautiful mythical diwata who lives in the mountains. More: The lyrics are actual writings of Jose Rizal about Mariang Makiling. It was Lyrically Arranged by veteran PETA member Manny Pambid when he, along with Tim Dacanay and Simo Dacanay created a Rock Musical Production back in 2012 titled, “Ang Alamat ni Mariang Makiling” as a thesis production under SDA. Completing two runs. This is an interesting choice of song as i am really not sure where this track fits in THIS play. It was just a fun theme song i liked to look back on and re-mix with my version. So there really is little to say about this track. You can search “Mariang Makiling Tim Dacanay” on Facebook for more information about the musical. Easter Eggs:

• Natatawa ako palagi sa pag voice ko sa mga batang kausap ni Rizal. Ako lang kasi lahat yon e. Originally kukuha ako ng mga kibigan ko to do it, pero with so little time, at sa sobrang nakakatamad niya gawin, i felt it more fun doing it na lahat ako na lang. Haha.

• I did not write this! So most of these words in the lyrics i do not know and have had to search. HAHAHA.

• I try to stay true to the Original composition by Simo Dacanay, pero kasi may ibang mga words at pronunciations na hindi maintindihan without a second listening, so medyo in-adjust ko siya dito sa version na ito. Adding na, this is supposedly Rizal teling a story to KIDS. KIDS have to understand this. Ughh.

Fort Santiago (Gumawa Tayo Ng Ingay) Original Composition by Buch Dacanay Written by Buch Dacanay Summary: The title is very straight-forward. I imagine this to be the finale song of the play, so i made it to definitely SOUND like an ending. Here, Rizal is in his cell in Fort Santiago having spoken with some of the (fictionalized) cellmates and other imprisoned Filipinos. They talk of how they worry about getting executed, how they are depressed, and how there isn’t enough rice to feed one’s self when the Spaniards feed them. But Rizal sees different, he sees this as an opportunity to make one last uprising, if they ALL believe that, this may be in fact, their last day. They should make the best of it and don’t go down swinging Na Naka-Simangot. So Gagawa Sila Ng Ingay, to annoy the guards and mock the Spaniards. Rizal basically starts a meaningful riot, talking of how we should all live our lives at our fullest; do what you love, and chase your dreams! In the song he tells us it doesn’t matter what age you are, where you are, who you are; if you have a dream, fulfill, and do what you can for it no matter what because if you die soon--imagine if it would be today, you’ll regret not doing it. More: Parang ala-Greatest Showman na nga yung dating nitong last song.

Yung theme nitong “chasing your dreams” na ginawa ko sa kanta ay actually in honor of itong dream ko na mai-buo itong dula. Kasi sa totoo lang, masaya na ako kapag natanghal ito, hinihintay ko na lang yung mga araw lumalapit at lumalapit sa Opening Show nitong dulang. Meron akong napakinggang kanta ng rapper na si Logic tungkol sa...PARANG ITO. Chasing your dreams, doing what you love, and to do it because you’ll regret it if you don’t. Sobrang inspiring non. And that hit me talaga. Pagkatapos nung pinakinggan ko yon, shortly after, i finally decided what i wanted to do with clear thought...it’s what i always thought of and dreamt of fulfilling: A Theater Production that I build. Na ako ang lumuwa. Yung feeling ko towards it, it isn’t about the money, it’s about the love and the friends who are going to surround me and that i’ll invite to work with; And how fun it will be! And if we make money then we make money! But ultimately it ceases to matter if it goes in my pocket. Okey lang that it returns to the Theater Company and the friends that’ll help me. IT SHOULD actually. What really, only matters is that this production happens. Because once it does, I’m happy. And i will never run out of happy again. :)

Maybe that’s what this final “Fort Santiago” song is all about. Dreams. Because i want to inspire people to chase their dreams. When this is a show, i want them to come and see it, and ma-hanga lang...then the best thing would be is when they will be inspired enough to make their own production. ;) Easter Eggs:

• At the end, before the last chord we hear Rizal say “Consummatum Est!” which is his exact last words on the record, before getting executed. It is his reference to Jesus Christ’s last words as it was also what he said. It is Latin, in English translating to “It is complete.”

Which is terrific for the play, because it is NOW a reference to the story being “Complete”. As after this song number Telon na.

• I have to note that this being the ending of the play isn’t cliché, that the idea that the ending is that Rizal gets shot. It won’t be cliché. Because in the (Supposed) script, there is a scene where Rizal’s friend is writing a biogrpahy of someone and he tells Rizal that even after That person’s death he’s still going to continue the biography, talking about what happens next, how that will resonate to everyone; but to this, Rizal disagrees. He believes the perfect ending to a story about someone in a biogrpahy is if it ends when the story of that person ends. Hence, his death.

So initially, the ending of THIS play i’m making is a reference to what Rizal had said early on in the story. :) It is poetic.

• At (00:57) is one of my favorite lines which is, “Tayo pa ba’y mapapalaya, imbes na magdasal ay maniwala doon.” That is a creative line for me. It references Rizal’s loss in cultural religion, for he is open about any and other religions but is never decided on one.

It might be (subconciously) controversial to say “Don’t pray, believe instead!”, pero syempre hindi ganon ang dating ko. It’s more about a freedom of choice, and that sometimes things don’t work how they usually do, so believe in yourself rather than placing your hopes on it. :) (Again, i mean no offense.)

• Though the “Kanin” references worked for the song, Rizal was actually fed Eggs...i think? Especially on his last day; i read he was fed three eggs for breakfast daw which he did not eat and instead left for the rats.

• Dine-debate ko pa din sa sarili ko kung yung last chorus ay iki-keep ko ba sa Actual Run o hinde? Kasi maganda naman siya, yung “Wala Nang Pupuntahan” at meron siyang way of iniiwasan kong sabihin “Mamatay na si Rizal”; This is my way of ending the play. Peroooooooo hindi din siya maganda kasi parang sending the wrong message din siya, hahahahaha. Parang sinasabi, “Mamamatay na si Rizal, wala na itong pupuntahan.” Or “Wala naman patutunguan itong play na ito after mamatay si Rizal.”

Anu ba? Hahahaha.

• Masarap pakinggan sa tenga yung pag-overlap nung final chorus sa sarili niyang lines. When you listen to it kasi it’s naturally, “Wala na...Wala na...Wala nang...pupuntahan.”

Pero pag marinig mo yung overlap para siyang, “WalanaWalanaWalanaWalanaWalang—pupuntahan.” Pakinggan niyo.
