January 6 – 12 is National Folic Acid Awareness Week, but folic acid should be part of a healthy lifestyle every day.
What Is Folic Acid And Why Do You Need It?
Folic acid is a B vitamin that everyone needs to stay ingood health. Folic acid helps build DNA and your bodyuses it for cell growth and reproduction?
In 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration startedfortifying cereal grain products with folic acid in order toreduce the risk for neural tube defects (NTDs). NTDsare serious birth defects of the brain and spine. While this
was a great step to prevent birthdefects, it is often not enough toprotect all pregnancies?
Folic acid is water soluble, so itpasses through your body veryquickly. Taking folic acid every day
ensures that you always haveit in your system when yourbody needs it?
It is particularly important forwomen of reproductive age toget 400 micrograms (mcg) offolic acid daily. It has beenshown to reduce the risk ofhaving a baby born with anNTD by up to 70%. NTDsform very early in pregnancyso it’s important for women totake folic acid before theyeven get pregnant. About halfof pregnancies in the UnitedStates are unplanned. This iswhy it’s important to take folicacid every day, even if you’renot planning to get pregnant.
How Can I Get Folic Acid?
Think you are getting all of thevitamins you need from your dietalone? Think again! It is hard toget certain vitamins from foodalone.
Many women believe they donot need to take multivitaminsbecause they eat healthyfoods. Folate, a different formof the same B vitamin, isfound in foods such as leafy
16TIMA News LetterDecember 2018
green vegetables, beans, liver andsome fruit, but 50 to90% of food folateis destroyed incooking.?
Folic acid is thesynthetic form of the naturally occurringfolate found in foods. Folic acid is easier foryour body to absorb than folate. Folic acid isfound in multivitamins and fortified foods likebreakfast cereal, pasta, and bread.?
Multivitamins help fill in those nutrition gapsin your diet, especially when it comes togetting enough folic acid.
Who needs folic acid?
All women need folicacid every day. Gettingenough folic acid, beforeand during early pregnancy,is an important way toreduce the risk of NTDs.
These birth defectsoccur in the first weeks ofpregnancy, often before a woman even knowsshe is pregnant.
Some women may be at higher risk. Latinashave higher rates of NTD-affected births andthey consume less folic acid compared to non-Hispanic white women.
