Steve Kidd - President

President’s Corner

By all measures, 2011 was a great year for Gold Coast Region. We increased membership, won awards, contributed to the community and had fun doing all that and more. Before I offer a recap of the 2011 highlights(in the next issue of Kassette) I want to touch on some of the recent events that are not only noteworthy, but offer a glimpse

at our future. As November winds down and we finish the Thanksgiving leftovers, it is amazing that, despite the holidays, our team didn’t miss a beat with offering Porsche related activities that set record attendance levels. Our DE team was busy with a combined event with Suncoast region that offered a instructors school on Saturday and a well-attended DE on Sunday. Generally, a 2 day event that offers instructor school are financially challenging when done by 1 region, however when this type of event is shared with another big region and other zone 12 regions are invited to participate, the results can be different. In this case not only did Gold Coast and Suncoast work effectively as a team, the event also did not incur the financial hurt both regions would have incurred if done individually. Congratulations to Gold Coast regions newest instructors, as well as the dedicated members who were willing to try something new that may set the course for future instructor’s schools. While all this was going on at Sebring, Cynthia and Fred planned and executed a combined social and concours @ the Mandarin in Miami…..appropriately called Porsches by the Bay. Although the event pictures will appear in the newsletter and on the website and tell a lot of the story of what a great event this was, it is important to note that a social and concours can successfully cross pollinate and bring out members that may not have come out if this event was strictly a social or a concours. Thanks again to Cynthia and her team and Fred and his crew of judges that worked together to make this event a very well attended success….just shows we can have 2 highly successful events the same weekend. If that wasn’t enough, there was also another event that weekend that siphoned off some of the Porsche regulars from around Florida….yes the Florida state autocross championships were held in Ft. Meyers that same weekend and Porsches competed in 6 of the SCCA classes…..that’s another story for another day. While on the topic of team work and event co-mingling, another success story the following weekend was the Tech session/ social at KMW motorsports in Boca Raton. First of all my thanks to Kevin and Kim Wheeler for hosting an open house at their shop that not only included great food, beverage, T-shirts and hats but some insight on using a chassis dyno, alignment advise and engine/transmission services they perform.

Thought KMW was strictly a race car shop…think again Kevin says that while about 80% of his current work is track cars, a growing customer base of general Porsche maintenance and service work is currently offered by their shop. Thanks to Kent Monroe for re-discovering Kevin and his talents and floating the idea of this type of event, and to Vivian Ortega for working out the details with Kevin and Kim…..Again teamwork. And let me not forget the social aspect…I guarantee you that no one went away hungry, thirsty or without an opportunity a share a great story or piece of advice. On a final note KMW motorsports has been an advertiser in the Kassette for years and supporter of Gold Coast region during events such as our holiday party when asked for door prizes and goodies……Thanks again Kevin for your support. BTW I hear Kent & Vivian are hard at work cultivating a similar event in 2012 @ Fantastic Finishes. Moving on to more serious business, November is the month when election results are tallied and the future of our region is tested. This election proved to be hotly contested with a good mix of new comers and incumbents elected to serve the club in 2012.While the President and Vice President were not challenged, and will serve one more year, incumbent Cynthia Fluhart was elected to continue on as Secretary, and new comer Dottie Kidd was elected to take over the reins of the treasurer position. On the Director side, long time Board Member Stan Pearlman was re-elected to serve another 2 years, while new comer , Ed Kohly was elected to serve his first 2 year term. Ed also volunteered to take over the role as membership chair and is assisting in more of the DE registration duties….and a possible 3rd role in GCR. The alternate Director positions will again be split between old and new with Richard Diaz assuming the role as 1st alternate and Dan Doyle assuming the role of 2nd alternate. As I wrap up this article, I wish to again thank all the officers, directors, committee chairs and “others” for all they did in 2011 and the prospect of continuing successes in 2012. The “others” play a huge part in the behind the scenes action that make events successful. Also included are the businesses & sponsors that step up and contribute . Please plan to attend our holiday party and recognize those that volunteer, contribute and provide the leadership, energy and support to move Gold Coast to the forefront of PCA regions. See you at the party . . .

Concours Corner

First a big congratulation to all the entrants in the 2011 Porsches by The Bay Concours d’Elegance sponsored by DWS Investments. The Show was a great success, the cars were

stunning and the scores tight. I expect next year’s competition to be even stronger and new winners to emerge. It never fails to fascinate us what comes out of peoples garages here in south Florida. Everyone is a winner and look forward to next year. This year’s top award in the 356 Division goes to Emily Santiago and James Hondros for their outstanding and perfectly restored 1958 356A. Second places went to Leo for his 1956 Speedster 1600 and third place to Jay Cerola for his 1958 A red Speedster The next category were the 911’s from 1965-1979. First place going to Fred

and Lucy Kohly for their 1974 Guards Red Carrera. Second went to James and Emily Hondros for another outstanding and rare car, a 1973 Silver S. Lou Gonzalez took third place for his stunning yellow 1973 T. The 80’s Division was tight and hard fought with the First Place Award going to Skip and Elmy Ernst for their Guards Red 1986 930 Turbo. Oscar Melian took home Second with his 1989 Grand Prix White Carrera, which many thought deserved to win as well. Oscar will live to fight another day. Jose Bartute took home Third Place with his rare and award winning 1980 Weissach Edition 911. The 90’s was led by Dan Simonson who always shows up with terrific cars and this year brought his 1997 993 Turbo . Adalberto Nunez was Second with his spectacular and last year’s “Peoples Choice” winner, Silver 1993 RS America. The difference was only 1/2

point between first and second here. Third Place went to Pepe Goenaga in his arctic silver 96 993 Cab. The 2000’s and up Division was a very close contest and difficult to judge since all the cars where exceptional. The big winner here was David Cleary with his “have to see to believe” 2011 997 GT3 RSR. Ron and Susie Meyers took home Second Place with their 2004 Turbo Cab and Richard Diaz and Cynthia Fluhart were proud to take home Third Place with their yellow Boxter S. Richard’s and Cythia’s win was noteworthy because they Track, autocross and drive their car regularly. The Best of Show winner was selected among the winner of the different categories and went to Fred and Lucy Kohly for their 1974 Guards Red Carrera. Next GCR Concours will be the Spring Fling in March and look forward to the 2012 Porsches By The Bay.

It does not seem possible that we are publishing the last issue of the Kassette for the year. This year has been full of many spectacular events that have raised the bar for next year. Parade was a good example of the benchmark has set; PCA Family of the Year, and many 1st place trophies. Check out the August and September issue of the Kassette for full coverage. It is a true joy to

weave all of the great activities and stories from our staff and members to present to all of the members a snapshot of the life and times of Gold Coast Region, a member of the best club in the world. This would not be possible without all of the dedicated volunteers that spend much of their time and skills to provide continued improvement to an already world class organization. As promised we have stepped up our concours program under the leadership of Fred Kohly. Check out “Concours Corner” and “Porsches by the Bay” for a review of the largest attended event year to date at the Mandarin Oriental. A big thanks to Cynthia Fluhart and her team for planning this great annual event. The next GCR concours event will be at the Spring Fling. We may add a third concours event that will be held at a very nice location

in Palm Beach, stay tuned for more details. Don’t miss out on the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. We will be providing a hospitality tent with other zone 12 regions. Check out the special ticket offer on page 21 and details on the PCA Corral on page 23 We had a well attended Tech Session at KMW Motorsports in Boca Raton. Kevin Wheeler and staff provided Gold Coasters a very informative and enjoyable event. The race car simulator was a lot of fun and very challenging. Check out the expressions on Link and Diane’s faces, they are true instructors. Check out the flyer for the Key Largo Brunch below, what a great way to start your PCA year. Thank you to all of our sponsors and our Gold Coast members for your support. I hope you have a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah and a blessed New Year.

Porsches By The Bay

by Cynthia Fluhart, Dade Social Chair

Porsches by the Bay, literally lived up to its name, it was truly a “Sea of Porsches”. On November 13th, over 110 fabulous Porsches ranging from the vintage; 1956 356 Speedster Super 1600 to more cur-rent; 2011 GT3 4.0 and 2011 Speedster, which were displayed on the lawn over-looking the bay at the Mandarin Oriental! Thus far, this is GCR largest gathering (over 225 members) and deemed to be a favorite. The response from emails and calls has been greatly appreciated.

Members were welcomed by the Porsche Punch and enjoyed endless flowing: Chur-rasco steak, chicken, chorizo and more, which satisfied the most discriminating appetites! This is my fifth year planning the event, which began in February, upon our date approval. Then until Saturday evening, I was still calling to enhance and confirm more Porsches for the People’s Choice and Concours d’Elegance. Mem-bers could register for both.

By popular demand, we have offered, the People’s Choice for five years, where members select the car they prefer, one from each of the six classes. This was the first year for the Concours d’ Elegance for additional panache. This is a more serious and competitive Concours, with set guide-lines and expert judges. With both types of Concours, there was something for ev-eryone! The People’s Choice was divided into six classes by model type and the re-sults are: 356—James Hondros ’58 356A; 911 –James Hondros ‘73 911S; 944—Abe Cohen ’88 994 Turbo S; 993—Henrique Rocchiccioli ’97 993 Turbo; 996 & 997—Frank Saks ’11 Speedster and 986 & 987—Michael Suder ’01 986 S.

The event was a huge success due the col-lective effort of many. An appreciation goes for members who attended and shared their fabulous Porsches. Getting the cars ready for judging, whether by members or

discerning judges, it was apparent, prep time took many hours. Thank you Rodger, from Orbit Racing, for bring the renowned Al Holbert’s 1974 911 RSR. Thank you to Richard Diaz, the director the People’s Choice and Fred Kohly, the chairman for Concours d’Elegance, both worked dili-gently to accommodate the cars. A huge thank you to: Susie & Ron Myers and Viv-ian Ortega, who were tremendous assets at registration or with Concours. Gratitude is extended to the volunteers, who were judges or tallied the Concours ballots. The final note of appreciation to a job, very well done by the Mandarin, who truly has five-star service & food!

And lastly—SAVE THE DATE! I have confirmed, Sunday, November 11, 2012 as the next Porsches by The Bay Event! We need an earlier start for planning and more surprises! We will see you there!

CryoDetailing is the safest, most effective way to bring your vehicle's under-carriage, engine bay, and other components back to life. This technique will remove the harshest debris, yet won’t destroy soft rubber or electrical com-ponents.

CryoDetailing gets into the hardest to reach places, places that other clean-ing methods cannot touch. Great for restorations, concourse or daily driven vehicles! Any vehicle make or model can be treated!

Over the years, your vehicle collects hidden oils, road debris, salts, and other contaminents that can slowly destroy your vehicle’s undercarriage and add unnecessary weight. Our CryoDetail process eliminates all of these hidden debris and leaves you with a new, “assembly line” finish.

• environmentally friendly

• no residues remain

• removes all contaminents

• no hazardous waste

• removes corrosive salts

• removes cosmoline & adhesives

•• safe and non-toxic

• no water, no sand, just ice

• 1 day turn-around

Get Financially Fit In the New Year! By Jill Perry

Resolve now to get in better finan-cial shape this year. Reduce expenses like you’d reduce calo-

rie intake. And work to increase savings like you’d work to increase aerobic endurance. It will take discipline, but you can do it.

Set goals. The first step is to create a budget. Write down the year’s planned expenses and subtract that from expected earnings. What’s left can go toward savings.

Build endurance. Put part of your sav-ings in an emergency fund—typically enough for six months of expenses. Use high-yield deposit accounts like AAA Money Market or CD accounts. Next, take advantage of employer matches in 401(k) plans. Or get an IRA. AAA offers both traditional and Roth IRA CDs through our partnership with Dis-cover Bank.

Break bad habits. Paying a high rate on a car loan? AAA auto loans start as low as 2.35 percent APR. Check our loan calculator at AAA.com/AutoLoans to see how much you could lower your payments.

Use credit cards responsibly. Pay on time to eliminate late fees. Replace ordinary credit cards with cards that earn rewards. With the AAA Mem-ber Rewards Visa® credit card, you will earn points for every dollar spent!

Avoid setbacks. Maintain your home and car. AAA's Auto Extended War-ranty will protect you from costly auto repair expenses.

Your hard work will pay off, and your personal financial plan will be healthy and thriving. For more advice on a wide range of financial fitness topics, visit AAA.com/Deposits, click the “More Info” button, and follow the Financial Literacy link.

Our season finale was exceptional. Great weather, people and cars. It was a bittersweet feeling as the season was coming to an end, but without doubt this next year, 2012, will be even bigger and better. During the course of the year autocrossers accumulated points and it all came down to this last event at the Bank Atlantic Center. The weather was in our favor

as the rain stayed away. We had a total of 52 registrants and everybody was able to get their eight dry runs. KMW Motorsports Tech SessionArticle by Vivian Ortega GCR Palm Beach Social

KMW Motor Sports Tech Session was a success, we had over 60 members that attended and the weather was perfect! Everyone enjoyed themselves reminiscing about the early model Porsches. KMW Porsche racecars were on display and Gold Coast Region members enjoyed the tour of the shop. Kevin Wheeler provided discussions on tuning engines for max performance and had a chassis demonstration. Aaron Weiss from SimSport was there with his custom racing simulators. Some members had a chance to take a test drive and loved it. A warm thanks to everyone that helped with this event it was great!

Tech Corner: Freeze Your Road Grime

In this era of eco-friendliness where everyone wants to be green and help preserve and protect the planet, sometimes it seems that we can’t. I mean, how can you remove years and years of road grime on a Porsche’s engine, tranny, and under carriage without using harsh chemicals such as degreasers, solvents, abrasives, acids, etc., etc.? Well, I just ran into the coolest and most eco-

friendliest way of doing this. I went to visit a friend, who is the owner a local Porsche Shop in the area, and when I got there I saw something that made my heart skit a beat or two. They had a Carrera GT (yes, the $400,000 supercar from Porsche) on a lift and I could have sworn that they were sandblasting the $20,000 CCCB (Carbon Ceramic Composite Brakes) rotors and calipers. I though my friend had just lost it! I quickly ran over to stop the madness, but as I got closer, I saw that what was coming out of the nozzle wasn’t sand, but what looked like water vapor. “Cool”, I said to the owner, “using steam to clean the car?” “Nope”, he said, “that’s not steam, it’s CO2 “ (carbon dioxide).

I was immediately intrigued and started asking questions: “So, what is it and how does it work?”, “How do you generate CO2 under pressure?”, “Will it peel off the caliper’s paint?”, “What other chemicals do you add to the CO2 in order to clean?”, and a bunch of other ones.

He stopped what he was doing and started to explain: “This is called Cryo Detailing and we’re the first ones in the South East to apply the technology to automotive use. It has a very powerful, specially designed air compressor to blast away oil, grease, and stuck-on grime using only CO2”.

“It is safe on paint, soft rubber, decals, etc.” and he then showed me how safe it was by blasting the beautiful, Carrera Silver, left fender on the Carrera GT with his nozzle. I carefully inspected it, and it was perfect!

“We do not add anything else. It’s just pressurized air and CO2“. “Come with me, let me show you what’s inside the machine”. I followed him and we went to a giant blue plastic bin which as he opened it I could see that it was full of what looked like steaming rice. It was obviously rice-like CO2 pellets.

As they were reloading the unit again with the pellets I took a handful (which almost burnt my hand from the intense cold) to photograph them, next to a penny to give you an idea of their size.

“The machine is fairly simple”, he said, “it’s a big air compressor which generates very dry, pressurized air, then uses the pressure and a venturi to add the CO2 pellets to the stream of compressed air through a hose. Before it reaches the end, we install the correct size-for-the-task mesh and nozzle for the particular job we’re doing”. “So, depending on the air pressure, on the dry-ice particle size and on the nozzle’s diameter and length we can do such delicate work as clean the white thread’s stitching on a leather seat or we can strip off paint.”

32 Die Porsche Kassette | December 2011

“Why dry ice?” I asked. He answered: “The cold temperature, which can be brought down to 111〬F below zero basically deep-freezes the grime which is then blasted away by the air pressure and the small dry ice pellets. That’s why there’s no residue other than the dirt we’ve just removed.”

“So did you guys invent this or what?”“No”, he said, “this technology is actually used by Porsche and its dealers in Germany, as a standard service. We’re just the first in the area to offer this service.” When I got back to my office I went online to check and I found this on Porsche’s European Website:

But, the skeptic that I am I said: “well, this is nice and dandy on a concour-ready Carrera GT, but does it really work on old, baked-in crud as that on my 14 year-old, 214,000 mile Boxster? ;) ;) He said, “bring it in tomorrow and I’ll show you.” The next day I was there bright and early with my old girl. First I took a couple of “before” pictures to have something to compare. Now, you be the judge:

IBut maybe what impressed me the most was how delicately the Cryo Detail takes off the grime but leaves the part completely undisturbed. Take a look at this aluminum suspension part which was scribed at the factory. You can see how well it cleaned, yet you can still see that the original aluminum surface was not altered (sandblasted) in any way.

This is really interesting technology, in particular for engine builders, car restorers and councour d’legance enthusiasts or just anyone who wants their Porsche as clean as possible, even in places that no one ever sees. And the best part – it’s eco-friendly!

If Cryo Detail is not in your area, wait for it, or better yet ask for it.
