1 /22 Five dead teens, a stolen police car and the 'mosthorrific' crash in decades (3.09/4)

The first 911 call came at11:43 p.m. Saturday, a reportfrom a concerned motoristabout a Toyota truck barrelingdown Interstate 89 on thewrong side of the road.

More calls followed, and moreafter that.

Vermont state and local policedispatched cruisers, hoping tointercept the erratic driver, tostop the truck before a crash did.

They drove alongside motorists who couldn't possibly know the danger speeding towardthem and carloads of people they had no way of warning.

Among them was a Volkswagen Jetta carrying five teenagers barely old enough to drive.Minutes later, at 11:53 p.m., police received another 911 call.

This time, it was about a crash.

The first police officer on scene in Williston found two crumpled vehicles in the road ̶ aToyota truck and a Volkswagen Jetta. The Jetta was engulfed in flames.

In a desperate attempt to save the teenagers trapped inside, the officer grabbed a fireextinguisher and rushed toward the blaze, according to the Vermont State Police. Hepulled one young girl from the car and tried to suppress the flames.

Then he watched this scene in disbelief: His police cruiser ̶ the red and blue emergencylights still activated ̶ was speeding away from the wreckage. Behind the wheel sat aman, later identified as Steven D. Bourgoin, 36, the apparent owner of the wrong waytruck.

By the night's end, Bourgoin had not only hijacked the officer's car, but dodged policecustody while fleeing the scene, hitting at least seven other cars while driving the wrongway along Interstate 89, according to authorities.

His spree ended only when he crashed the police cruiser for a final time, police said,

Page 6: DC5m United States japan in english Created at 2016-10-12 ...d.digests.nhub.news/2016/10/11/20/usa_mix_en_full_japan.pdf · 2 Japan holds Australia to 1-1 draw in World Cup qualifying

ejecting himself from the car before it, too, burst into flames.

He was rushed to the hospital alongside five other people, police said, who are reportedto be in stable condition.

All five teenagers ̶ friends since childhood on their way home from a concert ̶ werekilled.

Vermont State Police identified the victims as Mary Harris, 16, and Cyrus Zschau, 16, ofMoretown; Liam Hale, 16, and Janie Cozzi, 15, of Fayston; and Eli Brookens, 16, ofWaterbury.

The catastrophe stunned communities across the state. Four of the teens were juniorsat Harwood Union High School in Duxbury, reported the Associated Press. Cozzi studiedat Kimball Union Academy, a boarding school in New Hampshire, but had returned hometo Vermont for the long weekend.

Firefighters who responded to the crash called it "the most horrific scene they have seenin their 10 to 15 years," Williston Senior Firefighter Prescott Nadeau told CNN.

Athletic events were cancelled at both schools Monday and the state's gubernatorialdebate was postponed so the candidates could attend a vigil for the students.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin ordered flags across the state lowered to half-staff.

"You know I've had the privilege of being governor for six years," Shumlin told WCAX."And this is the saddest moment. "

At a press conference Monday, Chittenden County State's Attorney T. J. Donovan calledthe fatal crash an "unspeakable tragedy" and announced his office's plans to arrestBourgoin, who remained hospitalized in critical condition, on charges related to stealingthe police cruiser and driving it recklessly. His bail was set at $1 million.

He has not, however, been charged with the teenagers' deaths.

The investigation, classified as a homicide case, is active and ongoing, Donovan said.Though Bourgoin is the main suspect in the wrong way crash that killed the fiveteenagers, the prosecutor said his office is still "piecing everything together. "

The Toyota truck was registered to the father of Bourgoin's ex-girlfriend, authoritiessaid. In court records obtained by Seven Days, the father said he co-signed for thevehicle, but that it belonged to Bourgoin.

"We want to make sure this investigation is done in a thorough manner," Donovan said,"that we answer all our questions before we file that charge. "

Bourgoin has another open domestic assault and unlawful restraint case pending againsthim from an incident this spring. A police affidavit obtained by WCAX alleged thatBourgoin threatened to throw his then-girlfriend down the stairs and bash her head onthe ground. The woman told Williston Police that Bourgoin hit her, WCAX reported, and

Page 7: DC5m United States japan in english Created at 2016-10-12 ...d.digests.nhub.news/2016/10/11/20/usa_mix_en_full_japan.pdf · 2 Japan holds Australia to 1-1 draw in World Cup qualifying

kept her from leaving the house with the couple's two-year-old child.

When she tried to escape, Bourgoin allegedly jumped in the driver's seat and held thewoman and child hostage while he drove around. She also accused him of pulling alanyard around her neck and saying that he would "kill both of them before he let hischild go. "

Authorities did not say during the press conference Monday if Bourgoin had contact withthe woman or child the day of the crash.

He did, however, seek "some sort of medical treatment" from the University of VermontMedical Center Saturday, Donovan said.

The hospital, located in Burlington, contacted the Howard Center, a mental healthprovider, "but Mr. Bourgoin was not seen by the UVM medical staff or the HowardCenter staff on that Saturday," Donovan said.

An affidavit obtained by Seven Days said that the center was "called but did not screen"Bourgoin, reported the newspaper. He was "seen" by a physician's assistant, it said.

In the spring, when the alleged domestic assault was reported, Bourgoin's then-girlfriendtold police that "when he gets in his moods, he does not think clearly, and has no regardfor those around him, even loved ones," reported Seven Days.

"When Steven is in these moods, it is usually because he ran out of marijuana which heused to stabilize his mood swings," the woman said.

Bourgoin is a warehouse associate at Lake Champlain Chocolates, reported the ValleyNews.

At the press conference, Donovan said that prosecuting this case was his office's "toppriority. "

Nearly 1,000 people gathered Monday night at Harwood Union High School to mourn thefive teens killed in the crash, reported WCAX. That day, the creamery where onestudent worked handed out free soft-serve ice cream. The Harwood Union boys soccerteam cancelled their game, but gathered on the field anyway, just to be together.

Two of the teens killed were on the team.

"We're just trying to remember all the good memories of them, doing what they wouldhave wanted us to do, come out here and play soccer," Harwood soccer player MasonLemery, 16, told the Valley News.

At the vigil, the mass of students released paper lanterns in the sky and wept.

Darrell Mays', the uncle of Mary Harris, spoke to the gathered students.

"Live a great life," he said. "That's what you can do for your friends who died. "

4 /22 Fujitsu's 1,800 British job cuts "not linked toBrexit" (2.13/4)

LONDON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics giant Fujitsu Ltdsaid on Tuesday it was cutting 1,800 jobs in Britain as part of a"transformation programme" but that the move was not linked tothe country's vote to leave the European Union. Japanesecompanies had warned in the run-up to the June referendum that a

vote to leave could damage jobs and prospects in Britain. But Fujitsu said in a statementthat the job cuts, which amount to 18 percent of its UK workforce, were part of atransformation programme across its Europe, Middle East, India and Africa unit. "Thesechanges are in no way linked to the decision by the UK to leave the EU," it said. "Fujitsuis committed to the UK and is confident in the continued growth of the UK economy. "The job cuts, which the company said would make it more competitive, would affectFujitsu's major UK sites including Belfast, Bracknell, Crewe, Manchester, Stevenage,Wakefield and Warrington. The Unite union condemned the cuts. "This is a hammer blowfor these hardworking employees who have given their all to make the UK subsidiaryhighly profitable," said Unite's IT officer Ian Tonks. The Japanese government publisheda 15-page report in September warning of the impact Brexit could have on its financialinstitutions and companies headquartered in Britain. The report noted nearly half ofJapan's investment into the EU in 2015 flowed to Britain, and requested clarity as to hownegotiations with the EU would unfold. "What Japanese businesses in Europe most wishto avoid is the situation in which they are unable to discern clearly the way the Brexitnegotiations are going, only grasping the whole picture at the last minute," the reportsaid. The CEO of Japanese automaker Nissan asked Britain last month to promisecompensation for any tax barriers resulting from the decision to leave the EU before itinvested further in its plant in Sunderland, northeast England. The British governmentannounced last week it would trigger the formal legal process of exiting the EU by theend of March 2017, giving some further clarity to businesses affected by the vote. ButPrime Minister Theresa May has said she would not reveal her hand ahead of time innegotiations with European counterparts. (Reporting by Kate Holton; editing by StephenAddison)

5 /22 Japanese train conductor rails against foreignersfor overcrowding ̶ RT News (2.06/4)

The announcement wasmade in Japanese ataround 11.30am localtime (03:30 GMT) onMonday, shortly after theNankai Line express trainleft Tengachaya Stationin Osaka, bound forKansai InternationalAirport.

“There are many foreignpassengers on boardtoday… this has caused serious congestion and is causing inconvenience to Japanesepassengers,” the conductor said.

He later told a Nankai Electric Railway company hearing that he made theannouncement after a Japanese passenger complained in a loud voice, “There are toomany foreigners and they are annoying.”

The conductor said he did not mean to cause offense to foreign visitors and it was thefirst time he had ever made such an announcement.

A Japanese female passenger reported the remarks to the railway company, accordingto the Japan Times.

A Nankai Electric Railway spokesman told the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun thefirm had previously received complaints about foreign travelers with big suitcases.

The company apologized for the incident, adding that they have verbally reprimandedthe conductor.

“Whether people are Japanese or non-Japanese, the fact remains that they are ourpassengers. Language that sets them apart [from other passengers] is inappropriate,”the company said.

Japan will hold two major sporting events in the near future – the Rugby World Cup in2019 and the Olympics in 2020.

The government has made much of the countryʼs reputation for traditional hospitalityand service, a cultural trait which is likely to be tested over the next four years.

Saudi Arabia had been expected to be battling it out for third when theywere drawn with Australia and Japan but late goals from Fahad Al Muwallad, Nawaf AlAbed and Yahya Al Shehri in Riyadh on Tuesday gave them three wins from fourmatches. Bert van Marwijk's side now stand two points clear of Asian championsAustralia, who remained undefeated only after rescuing a point from their heavyweightclash with the Blue Samurai in Melbourne courtesy of Mile Jedinak's second half penalty.Genki Haraguchi put Japan ahead in the fifth minute on the counter-attack but was alsoresponsible for the clumsy challenge on Tomi Juric that allowed the Australia captain tomake it 1-1 from the spot in the 52nd minute. The Saudis top the group with 10 pointsahead of the Socceroos (8) and Japan (7) with the United Arab Emirates also still verymuch in contention on six points. Formula One championshipleader Nico Rosberg pouredscorn on suggestions thatMercedes team mate andreigning champion LewisHamilton is in 'meltdown'mode after losing ground inthe title battle. 'It'scomplete rubbish,' theGerman, winner of ninegrands prix so far thisseason, said as he andHamilton joined factory-

I've seldom seen that from him in the last years, such a large amount,' he told SkySports television at the team's Brackley headquarters. British media, whose criticism ofHamilton's use of Snapchat during a news conference in Suzuka led to a backlash fromthe driver who also walked out of another media session, had questioned his state ofmind. Monday's papers talked of a 'delicate ego', examined his 'fragile mental state' andsuggested the Briton was losing it on and off the track. 'Executives were mouthing the

word 'meltdown',' reported the Times newspaper, which said the champion had gonefrom 'cocky prankster to sullen loser'. Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff said it wasclear the media needed to produce headlines, building up and knocking down. 'Lewis hada couple of tough weekends... if he recovers and has a good weekend in Austin, he's thehero again,' he said. 'That's why I'm pretty relaxed about it.' The two drivers earliervisited the Mercedes high performance engines facility at Brixworth, where they alsojoined staff for a team photograph, signed autographs and posed for selfies. Mercedeswon the constructors' title in Japan at the weekend, a week after an engine failuredenied Hamilton victory in Malaysia. The three-times champion, who finished third inSuzuka on Sunday while Rosberg won, is now 33 points behind the German and evenwinning the last four races will not be enough if the other Mercedes finishes second. Nodriver has ever won nine races in a season and not been crowned champion at the end ofit, but Rosberg expected a tough battle right to the end. 'It's going to be an exciting endto the season for sure,' the German told Reuters television. 'A battle with Lewis asalways, it's always tough against him. 'For me, it's just about looking at Austin. 15 /22 Toyota raises concerns about California self-driving oversight

By David Shepardson WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - A Toyota Motor Corp official onTuesday raised concerns about California's plans to require compliance with a planned U.

S. autonomous vehicle safety check list, calling it "preposterous. "Hilary Cain, director of technology and innovation policy at ToyotaMotor North America, criticized California's proposal to requireautomakers to submit the U. S. National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration's (NHTSA) 15-point safety check list before testingvehicles. "If we don't do what's being asked of us voluntarily by NHTSA, we cannot testan automated system in the state of California. That is preposterous and that meanstesting that is happening today could be halted and that means testing that is about tobe started could be delayed," she said at a Capitol Hill forum. On September 30,California unveiled revised rules that carmakers will have to certify that they compliedwith the 15-point NHTSA assessment instead of self-driving cars being required to betested by a third-party, as in the original proposal. California would allow for the absenceof a human driver and a steering wheel in advanced self-driving cars, provided there istwo-way communication with the vehicle and NHTSA approval. California will hold apublic hearing on the proposal October 19. President Barack Obama wrote a PittsburghPost-Gazette op-ed last month saying the administration is asking automakers "to sign a15-point safety checklist showing not just the government, but every interestedAmerican, how they're doing it. " Cain also raised concerns about whether the NHTSAguidelines are too vague. "The problem is there is going to be accountability and there isgoing to be enforcement," Cain said, saying in some areas NHTSA needs to offer morespecific guidance. "We need to go through this with a fine tooth comb. " Former NHTSAAdministrator David Strickland, who now represents self-driving advocates includingAlphabet Inc's Google unit, Ford Motor Co and Uber Technologies , raised concerns at theforum about whether NHTSA has the expertise to review all of the data they are seekingon self-driving vehicles. Congress may need to "better resource the agency to deal withthis new mission," he said. NHTSA has said it may need authority to conduct "pre-approval" of self-driving technologies before they are marketed. Cain said "the approachis somewhat flawed" and called for more conversation about how consumers can beassured that self-driving cars are safe. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx toldReuters last month he strongly believes "we'll get great compliance from the autoindustry" on voluntary self-driving guidelines. 19 /22 A gold rush: Earth's precious minerals formedwhen another world collided with our planet 4.45billion years ago

It has long been believed that Earth's precious metals, such as gold and platinum, formed on the planet over the course of several minor impacts. But new research ischallenging this theory, and suggests that a single huge collision with another world couldbe responsible for the precious metals. The findings suggest that Earth's history could

Page 24: DC5m United States japan in english Created at 2016-10-12 ...d.digests.nhub.news/2016/10/11/20/usa_mix_en_full_japan.pdf · 2 Japan holds Australia to 1-1 draw in World Cup qualifying

have been less violent thanpreviously thought.Researchers from the TokyoInstitute of Technology ledan international team ofscientists in the study, inwhich a computer simulationtracked the evolution of theplanets over their first 300million years. This is thelongest that any team hasever tracked the evolutionof the planets. The resultssuggest that one large collision formed the precious metals, rather than a series ofsmaller meteorite impacts over a longer period of time, as was previously thought.Earth has an unusually high proportion of precious metals near the surface, which issurprising, as they would usually be expected to settle down near the core of the planet.Until now, this has been explained by the 'late veneer' theory, which suggests thatforeign objects hit Earth, and in the process deposited the precious metals near thesurface. Speaking to the BBC about the late veneer theory, Matthias Willbold, a geologistat Imperial College London said: 'The theory is that after the core formed there was ameteoric shower that struck the Earth. 'These meteorites contained a certain amount ofgold and that replenished the Earth's mantle and the continental crust with gold.' But theresults from the computer simulation challenge the late veneer theory. The computersimulation took into account the metal concentrations on Earth, the moon and Mars, andsuggests that a huge collision could have brought all the precious metals to Earth atonce. The researchers believe that this happened before the Earth's crust formed –around 4.45 billion years ago. Their results also show that there was far less debris andmaterial floating in the inner solar system than scientists had anticipated. This suggeststhat the early Earth may have been a more benign place than previously thought. Theresearchers hope that their findings will be incorporated into future simulations of theearly solar system.

20 /22 The Automation of Creativity: How man & AI willwork together to improve the ad industry

In a quest to understand the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advertising, The Drum,in partnership with Teads, has unveiled a new documentary, The Automation ofCreativity, shot in Tokyo, London and Amsterdam.

The 16-minute film explores how artificial intelligence is beginning to impact thecreativity of advertising and the role of human creatives.

To date, artificialintelligence (AI)machines have been ableto write poetry, drivecars and there is eventalk of a machinepossibly winning aPulitzer one day.

Turning the focus on thead industry, TheAutomation of Creativity

film stars the worldʼs first artificial intelligence creative director, AI-CD ß, launched byMcCann Erickson Japan.

AI-CD ß is set a brief by Mondelez in the film and presents its creative idea back to theclient.

As Shun Matsuzaka, communication planner at McCann Erickson Japan, in thedocumentary notes: “We want to treat AI-CD ß like a normal creative director. And itʼsimportant for a creative director to be in the meeting.”

The human impact

The film discusses the impact of the automation of creativity on humans working in thead industry.

Justin Taylor, UK managing director at Teads says: “As we are moving into this creativeera of programmatic, we should see creative directors, data technologists and machinesworking together to really start making a difference, which is where the new era ofcreativity is going to come from.

For the last 10 or 15 years, we have approached digital from an analogue basis. Letʼsapproach creativity from a digital basis and use that to create change for the next 20years.”

The film also features the Cannes Lions multiple-award-winning The Next Rembrandtcampaign from JWT.

Filmed in Amsterdam, the documentary discovers how a team of art historians, datascientists and engineers taught a machine to think, act and paint like Rembrandt.

As the documentary explores, the machine managed to tackle all the complexities thatgo into the creation of a painting – resulting in a 3D-printed painting produced 347 yearsafter the painterʼs death.

During the documentary, Bas Korsten, the creative director behind the Rembrandtproject explains: “The blurring between us and technology, that was the assignment. How do you merge these two or let them work together?”
