The World Kumite Organization can be characterized by the unity among its founding masters manifesting a common dedication for the cause and aligned ideology.

Sugihara Kancho and Sifu Kancho along with the support of some of the most influential Masters in martial arts from Japanese and international roots have been working tireless to promote the WKO to a rate of growth second to no other martial arts organization in the world. The achievements of the WKO have been possible due to the founding Masters common love for budo, strong and unwavering friendship and respect for every WKO member irrespective of race and ancestry.

These masters embarked on a quest to overcome widespread political discord among martial art organizations. A task of which many thought could never be achieved. In 2007, upon the invitation of Sifu Kancho a small group of masters came together at the Cozy Beach Hotel in Pattaya City, Thailand to hear what this man had to say. At the end of a 5-hour meeting all masters unanimously pledged their support to the birth of the World Kumite Organization under Sifu Kancho’s guidance.

Sifu Kancho was convinced the only chance for a prospering WKO was if Japanese partners would join that have the strength, influence and charisma to unite Shihans from all styles all across Japan. Careful preparation went into this thought and after long discussions with his close friends Hasegawa Shihan and George Kolovos Shihan it became clear the best man for this huge responsibility was none other than Sugihara Kancho.

It was then when these two masters embarked on the quest to create a powerful WKO and set example by uniting masters all over the world for the their common love of budo.

Since then, the WKO has continuously brought exceptional support to its members and grew at an astonishing rate.

Japan under the leadership of Sugihara Kancho, set an example to the rest of the world and proofed that martial art enthusiast and Masters can be united and grow strong together. Sugihara Kancho worked hard to promote the WKO youth , as both Sifu Kancho and Sugihara Kancho believe our future will be secured due to the WKO masters and champion fighters equal love for budo and understanding of the importance of the youth to build the future and strength of the World Kumite Organization.

Today, the WKO Japan under the title of “WKO Youth for Japan” is holding record numbers ofregional and national tournaments solely dedicated to the youth: Up to 1’900 entries atsingle day events prove the skyrocketing participation at WKO tournaments for Children inJapan. In such short time Sugihara Kancho has set a true example on the possibilities of theWKO and set the standard for achievements for WKO members outside of Japan.

First, I wish to thank all those who have supported the WKO Over the last 10 years. Since our Inauguration in 2007 we have grown to be one of the largest non-political martial arts organizations in the world and are currently ranked in the top three in Japan. This has all been made possible due to the solid support of Japan WKO lead by Soshi Sugihara and the Secretary General, Shihan Itchikawa.

In some regions, we have run into difficulties with non-productive Executive members. Growth and WKO events in those regions have slowed, however in general most regions are averaging a 10 to 17% growth rate in New Dojo’s joining WKO.

Japan has been split into 10 regions which also includes Okinawa and Thailand. For each major tournament held in Japan such as the “All Japan”, The “JAC Athletic Cup”, “WKO Junior All Japan”, “The WKO World Cup “, and the “WKO World Kumite Championships”, each of the 10 regions holds a series of selection tournaments. WKO holds over 100 tournaments per year, not counting minor tournaments promoted by members in different countries. This access to global tournaments is what has attracted many members.

日本は、沖縄とタイを含め10の地域に区分されており、 “All Japan”, The “JAC Athletic Cup “, “WKO Junior All Japan “, “The WKO World Cup “そして、 the “WKO World Kumite Championships ”のようなメジャートーナメントが開催され、それらの大会の出場選手を選抜するためのトーナメントが10の地域のそれぞれにおいて行われます。

In 2018, the WKO will be concentrating on the first ever World Cup for Junior students from 6 years up to 18 years old under the banner of the JAC (Japan Athletic Cup). The first tournament will be held in Osaka Japan on February 12th, 2018. For the first time, the top children from around the world now have a chance to compete on a world platform in Japan.

WKO will also be concentrating on certifying judges to an international standard with each country being able to produce one national head referee who will be able to referee at the JAC, The WKO World Cup and the WKO Kumite Tournaments. These selected judges will be required to pass an intensive referee examination to be permitted to judge and in turn will be part of the qualifying process for local judges in their regions.

The reason we are focusing on the education of judges is due to the vast number of WKO members wanting to hold WKO sanctioned tournaments all over the world… Quality judging means quality tournaments.

WKO will also be introducing a WKO fighters card (RED card). This is due to the large number of WKO members. As of 2018 only WKO card holders will be allowed to compete. The cost is minimal at $10 USD, and of the money, the registering Dojo retains $5 USD for sponsorship. The fighters Card (is for kyu grade fighters) and the standard Black card is for Black belts and above.

This system allows the WKO to see which of its members are genuinely active in promoting WKO in their regions. The ID card number will also allow rapid online search of a fighter and their statistics, grade, Age and dojo. This will, in the future, assist promotors to ensure the quality of Tournament draws and give credit to students for their Accomplishments.

The WKO currently does not charge a sanctioning fee for members whom wish to hold a WKO sanctioned tournament however, as of 2018, the tournament will not be allowed to be called a WKO Sanction unless all fighters competing in the tournament have WKO issued cards i.e. the red card or the black card depending on the grade and the certified or recognised WKO supervising judge.

All results from such tournaments will then be filed with the Hombu dojo and uploaded onto the website as public information. Due to this, we need to ensure that the selection tournaments, or any tournament in relation to the WKO, is of international standard and the results being handed to them are true and correct before it is published on the public domain.

Due to the strength and the growth of the WKO in some regions, members have abused this power to control or dominate in the regions to try and promote their systems, when in fact the WKO tournament promoters should utilise the WKO as a platform to promote all styles that are current members of the organization. Therefore, when holding a WKO selection tournament, it needs to be done on a nonbiased platform giving opportunity to all styles, regardless of their size and all systems.

WKO has a lot to offer its members. But with this comes a high price. That is why your support goes a long way in the growth of our organization.

WKO currently has two Hombus. One of which is in Okinawa and the other in Pattaya, Thailand. The reason we have two Hombus is mainly due to the strict Visa implications of entering Japan which makes it hard for some Southeast Asian countries to visit and train and can often be very expensive, whereas Thailand is Visa free for most countries and very inexpensive. The Thailand hombu also offers accommodation at discounted rates which makes it possible for countries to be able to utilise it for their own private camps or seminars, or just attend training at the Hombu Dojo. Currently the cost to run the WKO is over one million USD per year just to fund the Japan Hombu, the International Hombu and organizing international events, airfares, hotels and administration.

For the first 7 years WKO failed to make a profit, running at a massive loss and relying on corporate sponsorship and personal cash injection. However, for the last three years the WKO has started to almost break even. By 2018, the WKO feels that we can be at a breakeven point. However, this can only be achieved with the support of our members and by those who are genuinely out there to help the WKO grow over the next decade.

In relation to the Olympic games and the involvement of full contact karate, WKO senior members have unanimously agreed that this is not the path in which the organization should follow. We have no objection to any WKO Dojo’s whom wish to align with Olympic selection or such organizations that offer this, however, we at the WKO believe that the balance between Budo and Martial arts needs to be our prime objective.

Inclosing,

Together we have come a long way and we will continue to grow in the future. Some of the decisions made have not been appealing to some members. However, in an organization as large as The WKO has become, we cannot please all. We do our best to make decisions based on rewards, benefits, contributions, and solid set statistical data of growth from our members in the regions. The new card system will enable the administration to truly see where WKO support is needed based on its growth.

The world we live in now is being judged harshly based on people’s belief, religion, or their political involvement. Where as in the world most of us teachers grew up in an environment where you were judged on your contribution to the world and by your actions.

As teachers, we cannot be politicians, as politicians make promises to gain votes. Teachers must be judged by our ability to perform and by how we teach and how we pass on our knowledge so that students may benefit. Politicians make up lies and sometimes make promises to gain votes, but as teachers, our main concern should be the passing on of knowledge and the enhancement and advancement of our students and members so that when we are gone our name, our styles, and the organizations that we belong to along with the teachings that we taught are passed on and not forgotten. So, my pledge to WKO Members is to continue to pass on knowledge for as long as I possibly can and to continue to support those who support me and the WKO into the Next decade.

Congratulations to the World Kumite Organization on its 10th year anniversary and to Kaicho Sifu Robert Mcinnes, president of WKO, all Shihans, Senseis and everybody who has supported the world Kumite Organization during the past decade.

I remember that in 2007 several Shihans from different countries gathered in Pattaya, Thailand. After hearing Kancho Sifu’s idea about WKO, many of them got confused and we then started to build WKO Japan together with Shihan Hasegawa of Kyokushin Kaikan and our brothership with Sifu Kancho started.

During these years Kancho Sifu has spent all of his efforts generously, spiritually, and financially full time to spread WKO all over the world.

I was also blessed with the help of my partner Shihan Ichikawa, the General Secretary of WKO Japan, and together we have expended WKO all over the country from Hokkaido to Okinawa and divided it into 10 blocks. Now we hold more than 20 major tournaments annually in Japan with the help of these blocks leaders.

In 2018 the WKO will concentrate on the first ever World Cup for Junior students from 6 years up to 18 years old under the banner of the JAC (Japan Athletic Cup). This tournament is the first of its kind and will be held at Edion Arena (Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium) on February 12th, 2018.

I am glad that the top selected children from around the world will have a chance to compete in this special great international tournament.

This is the philosophy of WKO that enables Shihans and Senseis to overcome their race, religion, and cultural differences and to break down the walls between different karate styles and to feel the Budo and true Karate and to teach and grow many good students who can contribute to youth development and society through karate as martial arts. We want to promote the basis for the society.

Karate is GreatViva World Kumite OrganizationOsu

This bond between Sugihara Soshi and Sifu Kancho is a very special bond , like twins they both think the same and despite the language difference these two seem to know every thought of each other and when together are virtually inseparable. This bond is due to their both having a deep respect for each other and a strong love for Budo and teaching martial arts. Together they can always be seen laughing and enjoying life and both work diligently to preserve the first organization in decades that has finally given the world a platform that truly works for its members and opens doors for its members that many never previously had. The love these two have for each other sets and example to us all that through the strength of friendship nothing is impossible.

These two great masters can be seen many times training together, swapping

ideas and learning from each other with open minds so as they can pass on knowledge to their students . Both Soshi and Kancho Sifu feel martial arts is forever growing and changing arts and that if the leaders don't open their minds and work together then they are restricting the growth of the Arts in which they lead or teach.

What is strange to some but inspiring to others is that these to men stand side beside with now power struggle to control one of the largest organizations in the world, instead they work to build. Soshi once said to Sifu Kancho “ if I only had time for two friends in the rest of my life I am happy those friends are you and Shihan Itchicawa.” Some say after Soshi said this Sifu Kancho , Itchicawa Shihan and Soshi ate Yakiniku , and got terribly drunk. And each time they meet they preform the same ritual to remind them of their friendship. Sifu Kancho once said “ In my life time have been all over the world teaching and I have meet many great people , but there will only ever be one Soshi Sugihara and to have him as my brother and friend gave me the inspiration to build the WKO “.

Some have tried to use their position in the WKO to exert power and try to control martial arts in there regions. This simply is not Budo and is unacceptable. WKO has a lot of influence with many governments and

sports organizations around the world and will use this influence to dismiss any WKO representative who’s actions may tarnish the reputation of our organization. Politics and power struggles are to be kept

out of the WKO.

In some countries we have more than one representatives working together under a Kohai Sempai system to create growth.

In Japan we have 10 regions with a Shibucho controlling each of these regions based on his or her ability to coordinate and unite members . The secretary General Shihan Itchicawa

organizes and administrates the requirements of these Branch Chiefs and Members and reports to Soshi Sugihara and Sifu Kancho.

This system works and is a great method for all countries.

The position each holds in the organization is purely for the working structure of the organization. The status each master holds in the WKO community is based on Khohi Sempai and how much that person puts into the growth of our great organization.

Unity builds strength. The better everyone works together the stronger we grow and when you fall down there will be others to help you up.
