WELCOMEWe are kicking off our exciting autumn season with the world première of Without Stars by the brilliantly talented James Cousins Company. On the same evening we launch our new Choreographic Development Fund, specifically set up, thanks to a generous legacy gift, to nurture choreographic talent. To find out how you can support us and get involved see pages two and three.

Highlights over the next few months include: Jasmin Vardimon Company with a re-worked version of her witty, modern day fairytale, Park; leading young choreographer Alexander Whitley presents an exciting bill of two works; Mark Bruce Company makes its dance debut in Ipswich with a stunning adaptation of Dracula; MOKO Dance returns with Chalk About, a fantastic show for children, schools and families with a free programme of pre and post show arts activities; and Compagnia TPO returns to the DanceHouse with their truly magical Christmas show Butterflies – the perfect interactive performance experience to introduce little ones, aged 4 years and over, to dance.

At the end of October half term, as part of the national Family Arts Festival, we are hosting Halloween Funday. The Baby Loves to Boogie Children’s Disco is back once again, alongside spooky themed dance activities and workshops for the whole family to enjoy together.

We are particularly pleased to be welcoming back to the DanceHouse the internationally acclaimed SPILL Festival of Performance. This bi annual event brings the best and most radical live work to Ipswich and DanceEast will be hosting performances from Gob Squad and the world première of Animate Objects in Sonic Action.

During the summer we installed a shiny new coffee machine and are delighted to now serve Paddy & Scott’s excellent slow-roasted coffee in our danceeats! café. Word on the street is very positive – we love it and would like to hear what you think.

We hope you can join us for one or more of these performances and look forward to seeing you at the DanceHouse soon. As you’ll know, if you’ve visited us before, if a show is on for one night only tickets do sell out fast so I would urge you to book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

FRIDAY 19 SEPTEMBER

6.45PMChampagne Reception to announce the new Choreographic Development Fund, hosted by Gary Avis (Principal Character Artist, Royal Ballet), Deborah Bull (Director of Cultural Institute at King’s College, London, formerly Creative Director of the Royal Opera House and Principal, Royal Ballet) and Brendan Keaney (Artistic Director and Chief Executive, DanceEast).

A generous legacy gift has enabled us to start this fund. We hope you will be able to join us for an exciting evening and support us in our bid to raise £40k from donations by the end of the year.

The best way to support the Choreographic Development Fund is by booking your tickets for this event.

Set up specifically to develop choreographic talent, choreographers will be able to use the fund to help them make new work or develop their practice. Applications will open in spring 2015 and any choreographer working in the UK can apply. Funds can be used for Research and Development or as a contribution to making a dance work. All the money raised through this event will help to support choreographic talent; giving choreographers the space, time and resources they need to nurture creativity and devise the world premières of the future.

As a supporter you will enjoy exclusive information about the successful recipients and we hope, at some stage in the future, this money will be used to create a production that will be performed at the Jerwood DanceHouse.

PRINCIPAL SPONSORS

JAMES COUSINS COMPANYSince graduating in 2010 from London Contemporary Dance School, James Cousins has quickly established himself as one of the UK’s rising choreographic stars. In 2011, having launched his own company the same year, he became the first winner of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures Choreographer Award.

In his short career, Cousins has already been commissioned by Scottish Ballet, the National Ballet of Chile and the National Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore; and had his work presented at The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. Cousins also has a wealth of performance experience under his belt, including a world tour of Bourne’s famous all male Swan Lake.

Finding new and interesting ways to move the body and bring dancers together, Cousins’ work is abstract yet utterly accessible. His choreography is dynamic, emotional and clever, with a complexity that provokes admiration rather than confusion.

Inspired by Haruki Murakami’s dark but beautifully tender novel, Norwegian Wood, Cousins has created two pieces, the world première of Without Stars and the return of critically lauded There We Have Been. Taking the themes of love, loss and friendship from the Japanese story, and adding his own unique quality to them, he has created a rich and powerful double bill.

Tickets £40 per person (includes £30 donation to the Choreographic Development Fund)

JASMIN VARDIMON COMPANYFollowing a hugely successful run of FREEDOM in May 2013, Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon returns to the Jerwood DanceHouse with her critically-acclaimed dance theatre production, Park.

Park is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. In this playground of relationships, young lovers wrestle in a historic fountain, a graffiti artist sprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in a bag lady, and a flag-waving bully rants worn-out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine, creating a modern day fairytale that is alternately sharp, funny and cruel.

Reworked for 2014 with new 3D imaging and a multi-talented cast, Park presents a breathtaking collision of highly acute physical theatre, text, athletic dance and funky music, delivering fresh statements about our time.

GOB SQUADAre you With Us? is an improvised performance where Gob Squad ask each other all the questions they are afraid to ask in private, in public. It is part group therapy, part performance nightmare. By turns brutally funny and painfully honest, it is a high stakes game on the verge of a breakdown. Stuck in an endless photo-shoot-cum-therapy-session, the performers change their look from flight attendants to terrorists and more, searching for a group identity where everyone has found their place.

Are you With Us? is a performance for anyone who has buried what they really want to say to their colleagues, family or team-mates. Anything can go wrong. Everything is at stake. So, are you with us?

Gob Squad Arts Collective has been making performance and theatre together for almost 20 years. 20 years of working collectively, 20 years of making, discussing, arguing, touring, performing. They know each other inside out. Their private and professional lives are totally inseparable. They have shared highs and lows, fame and failure, children, love, homes and an office.

ARE YOU WITH US?

DanceEast is delighted to welcome the return of its We Are Ipswich partner Pacitti Company and SPILL Festival of Performance with a thought-provoking selection of work at the Jerwood DanceHouse.

Recognised worldwide as the UK’s premier artist-led festival of radical live work, SPILL boasts an international reputation for presenting the work of exceptional artists specialising in the fields of experimental theatre, live art and performance from around the globe.

Mehmet Sander trained at London Contemporary Dance School, California State University, Harvard University and American Dance Festival. Inspired by physics, modernist architecture, painter Piet Mondrian, and Merce Cunningham, he founded the Mehmet Sander Dance Company in 1990 which toured internationally. Recent works have been presented at Fierce Festival with workshops at Tate Modern.

John Bowers works with modular synthesisers, home-brew electronics, and reconstructions of antique image and sound-making devices, alongside contemporary digital technology. He makes performance environments which combine sound, image and gesture at a fundamental material level and has toured with Rambert Dance Company performing David Tudor’s music to Merce Cunningham’s seminal piece Rainforest.

Animate Objects In Sonic Action is a world première of Sander and Bowers’ first collaboration, focusing on their common explorations of time, space and movement.

ALEXANDER WHITLEY DANCE COMPANYLeading new British choreographer Alexander Whitley showcases an exciting bill of two works in his company’s inaugural tour.

A Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate and DanceEast Associate Artist, Whitley’s influences include technology, philosophy and design. Following his Royal Ballet School training, Whitley earned a solid reputation as a dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, Michael Clark, Sydney Dance Company and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance and was twice nominated for the Critics' Circle award.

Described as “dancer turned one-to-watch choreographer” (The Metro), Whitley’s fresh presence on the UK choreographic scene earned him a 2014 South Bank Award nomination. He has created works for The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, Rambert and the BalletBoyz.

The Measures Taken, commissioned by the Royal Opera House in collaboration with digital artists Marshmallow Laser Feast, previewed at the Jerwood DanceHouse in June 2013 as a work in progress during the DanceEast Rough Cuts season. This visually striking and kinetically charged work explores our interdependent relationship with technology.

The Grit in the Oyster sets a trio of dancers against Thomas Adès’ Piano Quintet to explore themes of obsession and transformation. It was commissioned by Sadler’s Wells for Thomas Adès: See the Music, Hear the Dance.

MARK BRUCE COMPANYIN ASSOCIATION WITH TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES, PAVILION DANCE SOUTH WEST AND WILTON’S MUSIC HALL

One of the UK’s most celebrated and ground-breaking dance companies makes its Jerwood DanceHouse debut for one night only with a stunning adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic gothic horror novel.

Mark Bruce’s company of ten exceptional dancers bring Stoker’s haunting, erotic tale to life in a heartwrenching and magical dance theatre production. With an eclectic mix of music from Bach and Mozart to Ligetti and Fred Frith, Bruce explores choreographic styles ranging from the subtlety of classical etiquette to visceral contemporary dance.

Last seen at the DanceHouse in June performing in HeadSpaceDance’s If Play Is Play, Jonathan Goddard plays the infamous Vampire Count, whose sinister and ruthless ambitions challenge the very fabric of Victorian society. As his victims and opponents rally against him they must face the darkness and savagery within themselves.

Winner of the prestigious South Bank Sky Arts Award for Dance, this critically acclaimed production should not be missed.
