WelcomeDanceEast is home to the DanceEast Academy, a Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) in dance for the East of England.

Over the past four years our students have had remarkable success. Each student has a unique talent and potential that continues to surprise and delight us as they progress through the course. We take great pleasure in being able to nurture and develop this talent, and for that reason we offer a team of highly experienced professional tutors who have the skills to help students reach their individual potential.

Through the national provision of highly specialised training for young people, artists are cultivated at a critical stage in their development in order to prepare them for entry into the world’s leading vocational dance schools and onto successful and rewarding careers in the arts.

We are thrilled with our home, the Jerwood DanceHouse on the Ipswich waterfront, and have enjoyed a whirlwind of success since opening the building in September 2009. The DanceEast Academy is an integral part of the work delivered in the DanceHouse and is at the heart of DanceEast’s Education and Community programme.

This combination of classes is intended to give students a strong basic grounding in technique and creativity, to enable them to apply to a range of vocational schools with a broad set of skills.

Class locations Classes take place at the Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich on Sundays during term time (Saturday for Introductory Level), with mid-week classes in Ipswich, Norwich or Cambridge. All students also take part in intensive weekend, Easter and summer holiday workshops. In certain circumstances it is possible to tailor a more individual programme for those who may have difficulty travelling to one of the Academy classes during the week.

All students receive an Individual Training Plan (ITP) to aid their development and highlight personal goals and needs. The scheme is delivered outside school time and every effort is made to encourage students to keep a healthy balance between academic work and dance training.

The DanceEast Academy The DanceEast Academy is one of nine National Dance CATs aimed at young people aged 10 -18 with exceptional potential in dance, funded by the Department for Education (DfE). As it is the most intensive and committed of DanceEast’s youth activities, training is suited to those who have aspirations to pursue a career as a dance professional, or at least are ready to make a commitment to intensive training.

The scheme is devised to prepare young dancers for full-time professional dance training or university, and includes tuition in five core areas:

• Technique

• Creative and choreography

• Performance

• Health Education (including injury prevention, nutrition, floor barre)

• Enrichment activities (including theatre trips) and workshops in a range of styles.

The Facts

Is this course right for you?New applications are accepted from young people age 10 -16 from the East of England. Applicants must be enthusiastic and motivated, with exceptional potential in dance. Means tested grants are available to cover training, transport and dancewear costs.

No previous formal dance training is required, although experienced dancers are also welcome to apply. Students are levelled according to age, ability and previous experience.

ProgressionThe scheme equips students with the skills necessary to go on to further professional vocational dance training or university if they choose, usually at either age 16 or 18. Most dance colleges and conservatoires offer degree and other Further or Higher Education courses alongside the practical training. Careers guidance and advice is on offer throughout the course.

The aim of the scheme is to help identify and assist children with exceptional potential, regardless of their personal circumstances, to benefit from world class specialist training as part of a broad and balanced education. DfE Music and Dance Scheme


FAQs

Q. What will I have to do at the audition?

A. The first audition consists of practical dance sessions containing creative work, contemporary and simple ballet technique. Applicants are placed in a class with people of a similar age and level of experience. At the second stage of auditions applicants have a short interview with a member of the panel (parents/guardians/carers are asked to join them).

Q. What is covered by the cost of the course?

A. The cost of the course includes provision at the Academy, mid-week training according to the Individual Training Plan, uniform, theatre trips and medical support. In addition students receive ongoing advice and career guidance, and may be offered the opportunity to take part in projects with the National Dance CATs.

Q. Does the course only last for a year?

A. Students are assessed continually throughout their time on the course and are supported right through to the time that they go on to further vocational training at age 16 -18. If the Academy team feels that the course is no longer right for a student, they are positively supported off the course and encouraged to continue with other dance activities.

Q. Who teaches for you?

A. The teaching team is made up of teachers and accompanying musicians of the highest calibre as the quality of teaching is paramount to the success of the scheme. In addition to regular workshops, guest teachers will deliver extra sessions, making the training delivered relevant to today’s dance profession. Q. Will it affect my school work?

A. The Academy is designed to fit around school work and in the first year you will only need to attend classes twice a week.

Q. What about other dance classes I already attend?

A. It is important that students continue with a range of other activities. You will however need to be able to commit to attend all classes on the scheme.

Q. I like dancing, but I am not sure whether I’d like to pursue it as a career: should I still apply?

A. If you don’t think you could commit the time and effort it takes this probably isn’t the right course for you, but don’t stop dancing, this is just one of many pathways into a career in dance. Visit www.yde.org.uk for details of other options in your area.

Q. How old do I have to be to apply?

A. The Academy is actively recruiting young people aged 10 -16. Applications may be accepted outside this age range in certain circumstances, but you will need to contact the Academy to discuss your application.

Q. Does it matter if I haven’t had a lot of experience in dance?

A. It is not necessary to have had lots of previous dance training, although some dance experience is preferable. You need to demonstrate potential, dedication and enthusiasm.

Q. How often will I attend classes?

A. You will need to attend classes all day on Sundays (Saturdays for the Introductory Level) and one or two evenings during the week (dependent on age and level). In addition there will be short courses in the Easter and summer holidays. As you reach the age when you start to audition for full-time training your hours may increase.

The fee per student per academic year for 2012/13 is £3,577. This is set by the Department for Education and is a National Grant level.

Parental contributions can be paid in three termly instalments, or over nine months by monthly standing order.

Costs and funding

Travel and dancewearStudents may apply for fi nancial assistance with travel and dancewear costs. Applications can be made on a yearly basis, and assistance is means tested on the same scale as the grant funding, e.g. families who are entitled to a full grant are also entitled to full reimbursement for dancewear and travel costs; families who are entitled to 50% grant are entitled to claim 50% of these costs.

Early training is so vital for dancers, but as a parent it is not always easy to know what the best way forward is for your child. Becoming part of the DanceEast Academy means that the training is mapped out in the right way for each student and this, together with all the support they receive, enables them to be free to concentrate on their dancing. The fact that we are currently able to get a full grant is wonderful. It means that my daughter can have the best possible training without having to worry about the fees. Without the Music and Dance Scheme grant she would not be able to attend the DanceEast Academy or access this level of training. Parent

Annual performance projects expose students to professional choreographers who each bring their unique style and process.

Each year students perform in local, regional and national venues including the Bonnie Bird Theatre, Clore Ballroom - Southbank Centre, Jerwood DanceHouse, Norwich Playhouse, Norwich Theatre Royal, New Wolsey Theatre, Robin Howard Theatre and the Royal Festival Hall.

AuditionsEntry to the scheme is through a two stage audition process. Everyone who applies is invited to a Stage One audition (lasting one day) where they will take part in practical dance sessions. Selected applicants will then have the opportunity to return for a Stage Two audition and interview, and places will be offered by the end of July 2012. Please complete the enclosed application form by 23 April 2012 and return to DanceEast Academy, Jerwood DanceHouse, Foundry Lane, Ipswich IP4 1DW.

The Department for Education’s Music and Dance Scheme currently enables around 2,000 exceptionally talented children to have access to the best specialist music and dance training available alongside a good academic education. The scheme provides funding for children to attend residential schools in music and dance, choir schools or Centres for Advanced Training (CATs). The residential dance schools participating in the Music and Dance Scheme are The Royal Ballet School; Tring Park; Elmhurst School for Dance and the Hammond School.

This network allows students to work together on national projects and initiatives, meeting peers from across the country. It also provides a support system for CAT staff and management teams and is a forum for shared policy initiatives and best practice.

DanceEast is one of the nation’s leading dance organisations. DanceEast brings world-class dance to the East of England, presenting an eclectic programme of performances, widening the experience of audiences and bringing a new and invigorated audience to dance.

DanceEast coordinates a range of youth dance companies in Suff olk, bringing young dancers professional choreographers and expert tuition, as well as opportunities to perform at national and regional platforms. DanceEast brings out the potential of young dancers and gives them a chance to develop their talent.

Working with schools, DanceEast off ers a variety of curriculum time or after school activities, developing the extended schools agenda and providing excellent resources to develop the teaching of dance as part of the National Curriculum. DanceEast supports dance education within the school environment, widening the opportunities for dance experience to all young people.

The Jerwood DanceHouse is one of a growing number of centres for dance globally that have been created to reach out to communities and act as magnets for national and international dance artists. This £8.9m development on the Ipswich waterfront is the cultural hub of the regenerated dockside and a hothouse for the development and presentation of new and emerging dance talent.

The DanceHouse has three dance studios, a 200-seat studio theatre, Pilates and treatment rooms, a shop and the danceeats! café.

DanceEast has been incredible in boosting my technique and dancing skills, and the opportunities given were invaluable.
