There are as many answers to that question as we have members. More importantly, what is Rotary, and how does it work. We all know that our club is involved in many activities in our towns to help as many groups as we are possible to do. That is here. We also know that Rotary does great work throughout the world. Great! How does that affect me, or involve me? The answer is simple. All of this work, in our communities and the world at large, happen because of you. How you ask? I haven’t done anything. Of course you have. You may not be able to travel around the world and do a Polio immunization day. With your help others can. Others may have the time and means to volunteer, in my stead, to do these things, but how is it possible for them to be able to do this work? We have formed an organization called the Foundation. The Paul Harris Foundation. We all sup-port this with our quarterly gift of $25. $100 per year. Or as you have heard it called, Every Rotarian Every Year. There are 1.2 million Rotary members in this world. This money adds up. Because of our members, and their volunteering time and talents, we are in the enviable position of using all, all of this money for work in the world, and yes, our towns, homes and neighbors. These projects include things like water wells, so that a child does not have to drink from a polluted steam, schools, orphanages, cleft palate surgeries, and food sites for the street orphans, medical supplies and hard equipment for sites throughout the world, wheel chairs, and shoes. Yes shoes, to protect from parasite and disease infec-tion, and foot protection. And of course there is Polio Plus. Our great effort to eradicate Polio from the world.

But how does your gift of $25 help us in our clubs work. Listen. One half of the money we give

is returned to our District 6000 to use on our own projects. You have seen this in many ways. We applied for, and received a grant to adopt Fillmore School this year. Almost $5000. We have given coats to the children that need them. We work at the Fall Wapsi project of taking children, otherwise unable to go to the Pumpkin Patch. We helped build the new Handicapped Development center. The list goes on and on. All because your gift of $25 per quarter, less than 30 cents per day, all of this happens.

You make it happen. Keep up the good work.

Fi?y five North Sco, Rotarians and two visi;ng Rotarians a,ended at Thunder Bay Grille on

May 17. Visitors were Mike Lizak, from Be,endorf Rotary and Jamie Dailey, from Moline Ro-

tary Club. No mee;ng was held on May 24.

Speaker, Ma, Schultz, Secretary of the State of Iowa, gave his background in poli;cs and

highlighted the items that he has accomplished for Iowa. Ma, and his family, which includes

five children, live in Dallas County. Ma, is a licensed A,orney of Law, and was on the city

council of Council Bluffs, IA for five years. That sparked his interest in State government.

Ma, is the youngest Secretary of State that Iowa has ever had and he is enjoying his work.

Eric Langan was the sergeant in the absence of Mike Thavenet. He collected $20 in fines.

Eric is concerned that Jeff Helms is spending as much ;me on TV, adver;sing cars, as Eric is,

adver;sing flooring.

Is it the truth, Is it Fair?

LAST Mee#ng – May 17, 2013 – Secretary of State, Ma. Schultz

Our District leadership team will then direct whatever funds are raised by District 6000 to those Clubs that are on the front lines of helping the people of Moore and surrounding areas recover from this horrible disaster. Thank you all for your prayers and concern for the people of Oklahoma. We saw first-hand how many Rotarians from around the country helped the people of Parkersburg, Iowa not too many years ago. Now we have an opportunity to extend a helping hand through Rotary where "Service Above Self" really means just that.
