Dr. Lee is the founding Editor of the College Music Society’s Cultural Expressions in Music

Monograph Series; and she serves on the Board of Directors of the Performing Arts Medicine

Association, an international multidisciplinary professional organization.

As performer, Dr. Lee has debuted solo recitals in Rome, Italy; Bruno Walter

Auditorium at the Lincoln Center, New York; and Dr. Bethune Collegiate Auditorium in

Ontario, Canada. Her performance was applauded “intelligent” and “deeply felt” in Rome

International Daily News. She is active as chamber music performer and premieres new

works as well as traditional repertoire at national and international venues.

Dr. Lee’s research, focused on musician’s performance-related physical and

psychological issues, has been published in Medical Problems of Performing Artists,

Psychomusicology, Médicine des Arts, the American Music Teacher, and Australian Journal of Music

Education. She has also published articles, critical reviews, and abstracts in the International

Society for Music Education Conference Proceedings, College Music Society Newsletter, Psychology of Music,

The Piano Quarterly, the Bulletin of the Council of Research in Music Education, Conference on Piano

Pedagogy Proceedings, Music Teachers National Association, and Music Educators National Conference.

Her research is cited in the inaugurating MENC Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and

Learning (1992), the Pianist’s Reference Guide, Pianographie, the Piano Quarterly, the Journal of the

American Liszt Society, and numerous doctoral dissertations.

Her current project “Robotics Modeling of Skilled Hand Tasks” received the

Neuroscience Collaborative grant of $100,000. She and her Computer-Science Engineer

collaborators are looking into motor control of skilled hand tasks through analyses of

performance, biomechanical, and motion data of healthy and injured pianists. The goal is to

develop robotic models that can guide educational and retraining programs.

TEACHING Philosophy I believe learning takes place best (1) when the content is meaningful and relevant to the

learner's experience and purpose, and (2) when the student takes an active role in the

process. My courses are student-centered. Students take ownership in the process and the

outcome. In this model of scholarship, students as collaborative learners explore the

materials and subjects together. In this process, the student becomes co-creator and co-

producer; the scholarship of teaching develops into a collaborative research.
