Welcome to a new and exciting season with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. as we move in to our seventh decade we are delighted to share with you some of the finest classical music ever written, performed by some of the most talented musicians in australia. We bring you more than great music—we bring you thrilling concert experiences that reach to the very core of human existence.

these are exciting times. in this age of electronic, impersonal communication; of high definition, high resolution surrogates, it is exhilarating to be part of the palpable connection that is woven between musicians and audience members during a live performance. the intermingling of energies as we join in this universal expression of humanity reaches and satisfies our deepest longings for unity with others. it is exciting to experience and exciting to know that more and more Canberrans are sharing this connection with the CSO.

this artistic excellence is the result of shared passion; the passion of nicholas

milton, CSO Chief Conductor & artistic Director, for inspiring our musicians; the passion of those musicians for the joyous expression of music; the passion of CSO patrons for superb concert experiences and the passion of Canberra’s corporate community for this orchestra and the people we serve through music.

Last season was a watershed year for the CSO. We emerged on the national stage as an orchestra of firsts. among professional symphony orchestras in australia, the CSO is first with the highest percentage of subscriber renewals and increased ticket sales. Proportionately, this orchestra leads the country in income generated through corporate support and donations. Comparatively, we are first in showcasing australian soloists, conductors and composers on the professional symphonic stage.

the CSO is the only major orchestra in this country led by an australian Chief Conductor & artistic Director. nicholas milton joined the orchestra in 2007 and in a few short years has taken the CSO

to stunning new levels of artistic achievement. i am delighted to announce that in recognition of nicholas’ outstanding contributions to the CSO, actewaGL has commissioned artistic Patronage of nicholas. On behalf of the Board, staff and musicians of the CSO, i would like to thank michael Costello and actewaGL for acknowledging and sharing nicholas’ passion and commitment to excellence.

the CSO’s many corporate partners are leaders not only in their fields, but also in their active appreciation, engagement and support for the arts. they are part of this exceptional community in which participation or attendance at the arts exceeds that of sport. they understand that connecting with our inherent creative nature is essential to healthy living. i speak for all of us who love classical music when i extend sincere thanks to our corporate partners for the very real contributions they make to our shared CSO experiences.

We have invited brilliant artists to interpret the treasures of our canon: emerging australian soloists such as the exciting pianists David Fung and edward neeman as well as the internationally-acclaimed Goldner String Quartet and amy Dickson—the breath-taking saxophone sensation taking the world by storm. We bring you Grieg’s immortal Piano Concerto in a special tribute to the great australian Percy Grainger in his commemorative year, and symphonic masterworks such as mendelssohn’s "Scottish Symphony", Beethoven’s glorious Seventh, and Shostakovich’s awe-inspiring tenth. and with The Pines of Rome, prepare to experience the ground-trembling sensation of a Roman

CSO Prom Concert 2011 Hungarian Rhapsody

the CSO's 2011 season fires up with a spectacular Prom Concert which is guaranteed to get your pulse racing. Led by Richard mills am, one of australia’s most distinguished conductors, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra is joined by the embassy of Hungary to present a dazzling showcase featuring the most passionate and evocative music of central europe's most romantic land.

2011 also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Hungary's favourite son—composer and pianist extraordinaire, Franz Liszt, and the CSO celebrates with Liszt's stunning and tuneful Hungarian Rhapsody. Our 2011 Prom also features violin sensation Xenia Deviatkina-Loh performing Sarasate's beloved Gypsy Airs and, stepping directly off a flight from Budapest, Hungarian star soprano Judit molnár joins the CSO to evoke the soaring beauty of her homeland with music of waltz king, Johann Strauss.

Beethoven’s last piano concerto and mendelssohn’s most powerful symphony are the two extraordinary masterpieces for the opening concert of our exciting 2011 Llewellyn Series. Guest Conductor marc taddei brings tremendous energy and authority to the stage for this majestic program. “the emperor”, recently voted by australian listeners as their favourite piano concerto, transports listeners into a mystical and magical world. in the hands of sensational australian pianist, David Fung, you experience an interpretation of this work full of integrity and imagination.

Stanley Dodds makes a welcome return to the CSO stage for this fascinating concert. the great masters are represented in 11:3 by some of their most popular symphonies: Schubert’s delightful “Little Symphony” is one of his most optimistic and perfect creations and Beethoven’s majestic “apotheosis of Dance” is stirring in its perfect architecture and soulful beauty.

at this program’s centrepiece, the CSO is joined by one of australia’s finest ensembles, the Goldner String Quartet, for a rare performance of matthew Hindson’s Schubert-inspired The Rave and the Nightingale—a work of enormous energy and popular appeal. Following the huge success of last year’s inaugural Symphony in the Park event, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra invites you and your family to join us at the 2011 Canberra Festival for “a night On Broadway”.

Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park is the setting for popular maestro Guy noble and two of australia’s leading stars of musical theatre, trisha Crowe and Peter Cousens, who join the CSO in this salute to Rogers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter and andrew Lloyd Webber among others.

no matter what age you are now, your appreciation of music started when you were a child. to nurture this appreciation in today's children, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra is proud to partner with the macquarie Group Foundation to bring free, interactive music-education programs to aCt schoolchildren.

Noteworthy was introduced in 2007 and has already engaged and entertained over 16,000 students from age 3 to year 12. Serving as a great introduction to symphonic instruments and music, Noteworthy concerts are designed to meet the educational needs of specific age groups with everything from “clap along”

rhythm concepts in Noteworthy Kinder to on-stage workshops for senior music students playing with CSO musicians. in 2010 the CSO was also able to initiate Noteworthy Outreach which took the program to students with disabilities at Black mountain School.

Noteworthy concerts are held at the beginning of term three each year and are open to students in all aCt Government, Catholic and independent Schools. the CSO thanks the macquarie Group Foundation for their vision and commitment to young people and music in our community.

Johnathan efkarpidis and the molonglo Group have an extraordinary vision and passion for the arts—and because of this active commitment, the CSO is able to bring you ensemble concerts free of charge.

CSO ensembles concerts are performances which showcase the amazing versatility, creativity and talent of our musicians. String quartets, percussion repertoire performed without instruments, harp and voice, classical jazz—CSO ensembles bring an exciting, expressive world of music to our city.

the Friends of the CSO was established in 1998 and currently has about 200 members. the aim of the Friends is to support the CSO in its mission to create and foster symphonic music of the highest quality.

the Friends support the CSO in the following ways:y Providing support for an Orchestra Chair;

y Supporting the hire of music for each concert;

y encouraging attendance at concerts through distributing publicity material;

y Holding events prior to concerts such as lunches and morning teas attended by the Conductor and/or Guest Soloist;

y Developing links with other Friends organisations in the aCt; and

y Producing a CSO Friends newsletter.

Cso pLanneD GivinG

Planned giving means contributing to a not-for-profit organisation such as the CSO, while gaining access to financial benefits for yourself or for your estate. this provides creative and tax-friendly ways to support the CSO in today’s economic environment.

Depending on your situation, there are different ways to make a planned gift such as a bequest in your Will or through a Private Prescribed Fund (PPF). PPFs are a form of ancillary trust fund designed to encourage private philanthropy by providing private groups, such as businesses, families and individuals, with greater flexibility to start their own trust funds for philanthropic purposes. Donors receive a tax deduction for donations to their PPF, and most PPFs are also income tax exempt.
