Inventions are all around us. Since we live in a digital age, every day people are creating inventions to make our lives easier. As far back as anyone can remember, great inventions were created!

The telephone: We take this for granted every day! This has made communication much easier, before the telephone people would have to wait for days to hear back from someone. So thanks to Alexander Graham Bell, in 1875 he created the very first telephone!

The computer:Technology is continues to grow every year. The computer was first invented in 1936 by Konrad Zuse, however many inventors contributed to this invented and kept modifying it to make it better! Konrad Zuse’s invention makes it possible to look up information, email, web chat, share pictures and so much more.

The light bulb:This is proabably on of the most common inventions. We use this every day and makes our lives a lot easier. In 1809, Humphry Davy invented the first electric light. In 1878, Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, was the first person to invent a practical and longer-lasting electic lightbulb. In 1879, Thomas Edison invented a carbon filament that burned for forty hours. Thanks to these men’s “bright ideas “we now have light !

•Brain storm ideas with a partner of an invention you would like to create

•Then its time to hit the drawing board ! Open up miscrosoft paint on your computer and experient with colors shapes and the layout. You can make your invention on here or on paper to turn in.

•Next you will type out exactly what your invention does and why its helpful. If there was a situation that made you choose this invention include that also

•We will present our inventions on powerpoints to our fellow classmates. Your presentation should include a picture, discription, purpose, and how you came up with the idea.

•Lastly, you will reseach and write a paper on the invention that you think is the most important. This project is a fun way to losen up and get those juices flowing!

Helpful tipsTo think of an invention, you can think of a task(ex: washing your car) and make a chart of pros and cons of that task. This make help you think of a way to improve something and point you in the direction to making and invention. The link below will show you kids your age and their actually inventions.

This lesson did not have a specific origin. The idea came about from wanting to add science based thought into writing. I used the CCSSA as guide to forming the lesson.

This lesson is teaching the kids how to do reaseach. They need to learn to use outside of the box thinking to come up with good ideas and concepts. I think having them create their own invention is a great hands on way for younger kids to have them learn the content without them even knowing it. Also, having them make an invention and calling themselves “inventors” they will see the paper they have to write more relateable.

This lesson was designed for 3rd grade language arts. The lesson involves some science and social studies. The lesson can be changed to accompany a higher grade level. All that would need to be done is to possibly take out the activity and have the students design and actually working invention of their own and make more qualifications for the paper.

The only prior knowledge the learners would need to know for the 3rd grade level is basic research skills and how to form sentences.

Students will learn reasearching and writing skills. Through peer editing they will also learn fundamentals of reading.

Research to Build and Present Knowledge3.W.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.3.W.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take briefnotes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

Production and Distribution of Writing3.W.4 With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organizationare appropriate to task and purpose.3.W.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed byplanning, revising, and editing.3.W.6 With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (usingkeyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

Along with writing skills, other areas were also touched upon. Creativity is needed to come up with the invention along with teamwork. This project of making the invention was partner based so teamwork , compromising, and communcation was needed. Although the paper was not group based, the activity before it was helping them better understand and relate to the paper they had to write.

This lesson can be taught with in a week. The students can have a day to design their invention and come up with the idea, a day to write out what they want their invention to do and its purpose, a day to present, a day to write a rough draft of the paper, and a day to peer edit them. At the same time, each day the teacher can be teaching fundimentals of researcher papers and writing skils.

Students would be partnered up based on who they sit by. This way they are not forced to work or meet up with anyone outside of school. Also, this teaches kids that they have to learn to compromise with others they may not choose to work with. I believe this is a good skill to develop at a young age.

This project is at a younger grade level. The teacher would already know basic enough skills to direct this project. The only skills the teacher would need would be time management. The teacher would need to make enough time to teach the lesson and give them a good amount of time to work on their actual invention.

The facilitator would be following the same directions on the webquest. The only difference is they would be reading it aloud to the class. They do not need any special directions or tools to help pre-readers or under developed class rooms. However for pre-readers the paper part would have to be modified.

VariationsThe lesson can be changed in order to fit different grade levels. For younger kids the project would be more group based with the class working together and the teacher writing things down, they could also do more things like coloring in the shape of the invention and not actually drawing it. For older kids the project could be geared more science based and the kids can be working in an actual lab to make their inventions.

Process Continued•The teacher is able to change the process in order to challenge the students more or less. Also, the lesson and process can be altered to use more less technology depending on the resources the teacher has on hand.

•Brain storm ideas with a partner of an invention you would like to create

•Then its time to hit the drawing board ! Open up miscrosoft paint on your computer and experient with colors shapes and the layout. You can make your invention on here or on paper to turn in.

The best possible resources would be to use the libraries computers. This would be the best resource because that way the computers have paint and word where they can work on their paper and inventions and the teacher will be able to walk around and help them when needed. When all the students are in the same room and area they may be able to even help each other.

One teacher would be enough to guide this lesson on this grade level. However, if the lesson is used in higher high school levels more teachers may be needed to assist the kids making their actual inventions. A parents help would assist the child more with their writing skills but if the parent is not involved the child would do just fine. At the end of the project a possible field trip to a science center would be a fun and easy way to end up the lesson.

The students performance would be evaluated based on their paper they wrote. The activity is not evaluated as much because that is a fun way for younger kids to get into an assignment. The evaluation would work best for the teacher if they made their own. This would be because each teacher and grade has different expectations for their students, some being more harsh than others.

What to say at each point in the process: 1.Be very discriptive. Tell the students exactly what you are looking for. 2.When explain the design of the invention write an over view on the board on how to use and get into paint3.Then the teacher should lay out exactly what the paper should look like followed with an example paper the students can continue to refrence. 4. Before presentations are given the teacher needs to explained what needs to be included in the presentation and the time their presentation should take to present.

What to click on:1.There is not much to click on except the functions in paint and word documents which the teacher would already be use to using.

What questions and misconceptions to anticipate:1.The questions would mostly be program based on the word and paint documents.2.Questions may also arise in how to format the paper3.The kids will also probably ask bout invention ideas but the teacher needs to guide them and ask questions to lead them to their own answer.

How long to take on each point:1.The teacher should take as long as needed until the kids understand since these skills are needed in future grades. They are expected to be skilled in those writing areas since they are used in all subjects.

When to direct learners to work away from the computer:1.The only time the students should be on the computers is when they are making their inventions on paint and when typing their paper.

This lesson will teach students how to format and write papers. It will serve as good practice for research and writing. The students will also get hands on experience with technology such as word documents and paint program. Included with all of this they will also get social studies and science information. When they do their research they will be researching the actual inventions(science) and the people who created them and the impact and purpose the inventions had (social studies). This lesson is good because more then one subject is looked upon while the main focus is in english/language arts.
