4 CROSSLINK | MARKET FOCUS

Market Focus: Engineered StoneEngineered stone is quickly becoming the choice building material for countertops, flooring and walls. It brings timeless luxury and beauty to kitchens, bathrooms and other living spaces, making it a favorite among designers and homeowners alike.

5CROSSLINK | MARKET FOCUS

Engineered stone is manufactured by combining quartz or marble with a binding resin and pouring it into a mold to create a dense slab. It offers the beauty of natural stone with the functionality of solid surface materials. Learn the benefits below.

Versatile. With colors covering the spectrum,

engineered stone is available in a wide range of hues and patterns.

Eco-friendly. Engineered stone surfaces often contain recycled

stone, glass or cement. They also sustain much less material waste than granite during manufacturing and fabrication.

Hygienic. Engineered stone’s non-porous surface does not

require periodic sealing like natural materials, and provides superior bacterial resistance.

Low-Maintenance. While other materials are susceptible to staining if

the sealant wears off, engineered stone won’t absorb liquids, making cleanup quicker and easier.

Durable. Unlike natural stone with fissures that make it more

prone to cracking, engineered stone resists scratches and scorching so it looks better longer.

AOC is a major global supplier of resins used in engineered stone. Our Vicast® resins offer extreme versatility to meet manufacturer specifications while delivering superior performance.

A New Copper Mine in Indonesia

Wetar Island

Indonesia

A copper mine on Wetar Island is the first in Indonesia to yield LME Grade A copper cathode, a marketable copper product known for its high purity. AOC supplied the resin to protect the mine’s FRP tanks from the harsh sulfuric acid that is used during the smelting of ore.

During the smelting process, FRP tanks are filled with highly corrosive H2SO4 70% (sulfuric acid) and need to be protected with a corrosion-resistant resin. GAJA, who produced all FRP tanks used throughout the project, was familiar with AOC’s corrosion resistant resins and found exactly what they needed in AOC’s Vipel® F013. Vipel® F013 series are bisphenol A epoxy-

based vinyl ester resins that provide wide range of corrosion resistance capabilities. The resin was provided by AOC’s distributor, P.T. Global Raya Chemicals.

Tank production took approximately six months with some parts being produced off-site and transferred to Wetar Island, and some being created on-site. The GAJA team manufactured the rectangular settling tank using a closed mold process and had it shipped to the site. Fabrication of a buffer tank and three storage tanks took place on-site. They used a hand lay-up process to produce the buffering tank, a filament winding process to create the storage tanks.

Massive CIPP Rehabilitation at Air Force BaseThe cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) rehabilitation of storm water lines under the tarmac at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey was one of the largest CIPP rehabilitation projects ever performed.

U.S. Pipelining LLC managed the project, with teams working to place approximately 1,000 linear feet of 120 inch pipes. AOC supplied more than 250,000 pounds of Vipel® L758-LTI resin, a proprietary unsaturated polyester resin with the corrosion resistance, durability and toughness required for this complex job.

The job involved three different sections of approximately 325 feet each. After the installation of each section, the system (which included the crane, a 30 x 60’ tent, resin tank liners, the liner and pinch roller) had to be dissembled, moved and set up again at the next liner installation site. Because the wind was so strong on the airfield, all materials had to be weighted down and secured to ensure nothing blew into the airfield’s active taxiways.

It took workers about five days to install and cure each liner, and another three days to cut ends and complete each section. Once the lines were in place, more than 300,000 gallons of water were used to cure each line.

“AOC brought critical components to the project, and we engaged them from day-one,” states Jeremy Bowman, General Manager of U.S. Pipelining, who has been involved in infrastructure rehabilitation and repair using trenchless technologies for over 25 years. “Getting the resin right was imperative and being the beneficiary of AOC’s size, vast industry experience and logistical support, we were able to achieve something that, to the best of our knowledge, has never been attempted. This was an incredible achievement.”

Composites Bridge Connects North Carolina’s Mountains-to-Sea TrailThe Mountains-to-Sea Trail is a footpath stretching across North Carolina from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. As hikers passed the town of Blowing Rock, however, they were forced to wade across Boone Fork Creek — presenting safety risks during high water flows. The nonprofit organization, Friends of the North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail, hired Areté Engineers, LLC to design and construct a pedestrian bridge that would ensure safe passage across the creek for decades to come.

Due to the crossing point’s remote location, Areté bypassed conventional bridge-building methods in favor of a more easily transported and assembled solution. They specified composite structural elements that could be ferried by helicopter close to the build site.

Areté constructed the 1.2m-wide by 25m-long structure using pultruded fiberglass structural profiles from the Strongwell Corporation, wet out with UV-resistant polyester with fire-retardant additives. Strongwell uses AOC Pultru® P706-500 for these types of projects. With faster installation, better load-carrying capability and less long-term maintenance, the use of composites in civil construction will continue to expand.

AOC Introduces Product for Potable Water ApplicationsVipel® F010-H20 is an innovative bisphenol A vinyl ester resin for use in commercial and domestic potable water systems. Vipel® F010-H2O series of resins are certified to NSF/ANSI 61 standards for use in potable water applications. When used as directed, the fabricator does not need to perform additional testing to manufacture NSF/ANSI 61 compliant coatings.

Vipel® F010-H2O has been certified for fabricating tanks 25 gallons or greater and pipes one inch in diameter or greater. As an additional benefit, the product can now be used

with either MEKP or BPO cure systems. When cured with BPO, Vipel® F010-H2O can also be used for sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) containment. Since F010-H2O is formulated for sodium hypochlorite resistance, the composite equipment lasts longer and saves customers the cost of replacement.

Demonstrating proven performance under the harshest conditions, Vipel® F010-H2O underscores our commitment to helping our customers succeed in corrosion markets.

Advances in Fire Retardant and Low Smoke Resin TechnologyAOC recently introduced Firepel® K140-MTI, a high-performance resin system for interior mass transit applications as well as architectural and building applications. The unique one-part system is halogen-free and does not require antimony or aluminum trihydrate (ATH) to achieve its fire retardant and low smoke properties. Composites made from Firepel® K140 are up to 30% lower in density than

standard composites using ATH, meeting the transportation and construction industries’ increasing needs for lighter weight parts.

Firepel® K140-MTI uses a combination of proprietary flame and smoke retardant technology to achieve its performance, resulting in excellent handling characteristics, cure properties and higher glass content. Its unique combination of properties produces composite parts that

are easier to fabricate, stronger and lighter weight than mineral filled products.

Firepel® K140-MTI is engineered for the hand lay-up, spray-up and RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) manufacturing processes. AOC’s technical support team will help manufacturers maximize results through personalized service and support.
