Welcome Kindergarten 2019! Kindergarten students arrived at school on Monday morning with big, bright smiles on their faces eager to begin their journey through primary school. This week, Kindergarten students have formed many new friendships and they have been introduced to their Year 6 buddies. It has certainly been a big week at big school for our littlest students.

A highlight of the week has been the excitement of learning to read their first few books. What a fun and enjoyable year we have ahead of us!

Year 6 & Kindergarten Buddies Year 6 has been enjoying spending some time in the Kindergarten classroom this week getting to know their new Kindy buddies. Year 6 has also supported their buddies in the playground and during home time routines. Thanks Year 6 for your outstanding leadership and thanks Kindergarten for being awesome!

K-2 Information! It was great to have our new Kindergarten students commence school this week.

This term K-2 sport will be on Wednesdays. Please wear sports uniform on these days. Sport will be a combination of tabloid games and gross motor skills that we will showcase later in the term at our athletics carnival.

Meet and Greet Afternoon

On Monday 25th

February there will be an opportunity for teachers and parents to meet one another and exchange information that may enhance the quality of a child’s educational experience at school.

Meetings will be conducted at 3.30pm for Kindergarten in the Kindergarten classroom and at 3.30pm also for Years 1/2G, 1/2H and 1/2W in Mrs Whittington’s classroom. Years 3/4H and 3/4K will meet in the Technology Centre at 4pm while Year 5/6B1, Yr 5/6B2 and Year 5/6N will meet in the Mrs Bell’s room at 4.30pm. Opportunities are available for

parents to speak to their child’s class teacher after the group meetings.

We hope you are able to attend. We look forward to seeing you at this gathering. Child Protection Lessons – Stage 3 This term Stage 3 students (Year 5 & 6) will be participating in mandatory Child Protection lessons in their Personal Development and Health lessons. The topics include Different Types of Relationships, Identifying and Responding to Risks, Body Parts, Emotional Abuse & Neglect, Harassment, Personal Rights and Expectations of Gender Roles. These topics can be sensitive and challenging but are crucial in protecting our young people. Your child/ren may come home and want to discuss these topics with you further.

Have you moved, got a new email address or changed phone numbers? Please inform the school office of any changes in your living situation so we can contact you when the need arises.

Does Your Child Travel To School On A Bus? Many children travel to and from school by bus each day. Students require bus passes. Applications for passes may be obtained from the school office. The completed forms should be returned to the office. The bus driver will issue passes as they are processed.

Bus passes are only valid for a specific bus route, so a new bus application must be completed for any change to bus stop or bus company.

Please ensure your child comes to school on that day looking clean, neat and tidy wearing full Crookwell Public School summer uniform. Remember jewellery is not permitted and girls can wear only red hair accessories.

Crookwell Public School 2019 Water Carnival On Thursday Year 3-6 students attended the annual Crookwell Public School swimming carnival. The day was a great success. The perfect weather saw a large number of students competing in the competitive races, along with all students taking part in the novelty events. A big congratulations goes to Wattle house who won the carnival on 169 points, Waratah second with 140 and Bluegum third

on 92 points.

The staff and students would like to express their appreciation to the parent helpers that took time out of their day to assist in various ways.

2019 VOLUNTARY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION

What is A Voluntary School Contribution?

The vast majority of public schools request a contribution from parents each year to supplement existing funding. These contributions allow schools to provide additional resources and learning programs for our students.

What Will The Money Be Used For?

The money will be used to purchase resources to support teaching/learning programs for each student across the school.

How Much? The suggested contribution is $49 per child. Please note that this roughly equates to $1 per child per week. I cannot stress enough the difference to our school finances that your contribution will make. The contribution fees are within the guidelines as set out by the Department of Education.

How To Pay

Please place your contribution, with the slip below, in an envelope and return it to the school office as soon as you are able. If you prefer, you may choose to pay a contribution in instalments. A receipt will be issued for all monies received.

Term 1 Reminders Students are expected to wear full summer uniform,

which includes the school hat and school socks, to school every day.

Please avoid sending to school noodles or any other food that requires heating.

Students who arrive at school late or leave school early must be signed in/out at the administration office.

Verbal or written explanation must be given to the school to explain all student absences.

Students are not prevented from bringing personal belongings to school, but please remember to leave very precious or expensive items at home as the school cannot accept responsibility for belongings that are lost or stolen. iPads, iPods etc that are brought to school need to be given to class teachers as soon as the device owning student arrives at school and are to be collected at the end of the day as they depart for home.

Please encourage your children to walk across the pedestrian crossing at the front of the school when crossing the road to meet you of an afternoon.

Having Fun with Maths Students in 1/2G found a practical way of comparing lengths when they built towers during their maths lessons. Students, working in groups, applied real world concepts such as ‘taller than’, ‘shorter than’ and ‘equal to’ while simultaneously discovering that maths is exciting.

Published Weekly

The school newsletter called, ‘News & Views’ is the primary method the school communicates with its families. The newsletter can be accessed through the Crookwell Public School webpage (www.crookwell-p.schools.nsw.edu.au ) or receive a hard copy of the newsletter which is sent home with the youngest child of the family attending school on the last day of each school week.

Many families have the newsletter emailed rather than receive a hard copy. This method of communication is preferred by the school as it is more economical in terms of time and resources, and is a more reliable method by which to convey information about school happenings to a student’s family.

If you would prefer to have the newsletter emailed please return the slip below so we can add you to our list. Otherwise please check your child’s bag on the last day of each school week in order to keep up-to-date with school happenings.

Selecting a Scripture or Ethics Group

Please read the information below as an outline of each scripture group to help you make your decision.

Protestant: Protestant scripture classes are religious and

available for students in Kindergarten to Year 6. Classes are taught by a representative from the local Anglican or Uniting churches. Lessons are religious and values based.

Catholic: Catholic scripture classes are religious and are

available for students in Kindergarten to Year 6. Classes are taught by a representative from the local Catholic churches (including St Marys). Lessons are religious and values based.

Ethics: Ethics classes are a non-religious option for students

in Years 3-4. Ethics classes involve lessons based on values and building positive relationships with others.

Non Participation in Ethics and Scripture classes:

Students who attend non-scripture classes will not be taught however they will be supervised by a staff member. Students will have the opportunity to access technology, books and writing materials during this time.

Please make an informed choice when selecting the most appropriate option for your child. If you would like more information please speak to the Principal, Mr Michael Whittington, by phoning the school office on 48 321 213.

Ethics or Scripture Classes or Neither? Each Thursday morning, trained members of our community visit the school to lead 30 minute scripture and ethics classes. Students, with parental consent, may participate in either ethics or scripture classes. Children of parents who do not wish for them to participate in either of these classes will be supervised by a member of Crookwell Public School’s staff.

Jollybops Science Show The Jollybops Science Show brings science alive for

students through exciting, stimulating and interactive shows! Rusty the Robot and The Jolly Professor are back to entertain students from Kindergarten to Year 6 on Tuesday 5

th March 2019!

This year’s K-2 show is all about Balloon Science, this includes “exploding hydrogen balloons, spooky fog balloon helicopters that fly to the roof and back and liquids that mysteriously change colour”. The show for Years 3-6 is called Natural Phenomena & Energy, “Students will learn about the explosive fuel of the future, hydrogen, see many items freeze and shatter under the stress and strain of the super cold liquid nitrogen, watch materials burn, watch air crush an aluminum can, learn more about the properties of solids, liquids and gases”.

The K-2 performance will commence at 12.20pm and Yrs 3-6 performance at 2pm. The cost for this exciting performance is $7.00 per child. Please return the following permission note and money to the school by Monday 4

No Hat …… Play In The Shade Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world with 140,000 new cases and 1,000 deaths recorded annually. The increasing occurrence of skin cancer in Australia is a matter of concern with skin cancers accounting for 80% of all new cancers diagnosed each year.

The A.C.T. and surrounding region has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in Australia. The major cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation over many years, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Even if exposure does not cause obvious sunburn, damage still occurs and accumulates over the years.

To help protect students from over exposure to the sun during Term 1, the school’s policy of ‘No Hat…Play in the Shade,’ will be strictly enforced.

Please encourage your child to wear their school hat at school to help keep them sun safe.

N.B. Adjustable microfibre school hats are available from the uniform shop at a cost of $15.00.

Return and Earn We have become a donating partner at our local Return and Earn. How does it work? Take your eligible bottles, cans or cartons to the Crookwell Return and Earn station located behind the Crookwell IGA. Each eligible container can be returned for 10 cents. P&C News Our first P&C meeting for the year is Monday 11

March will be our P&C AGM where all positions will be declared vacant. If you are a 2018 financial member of the P&C your 2019 membership fee will be due to the treasurer by the close of the February meeting.

If you are not currently a financial P&C member and would like to vote or be nominated for a position at the upcoming AGM you need to pay your 2018 membership fee and a 2019 membership fee by the close of the February meeting.

Annual membership is only $2 per year per person. You may attend a meeting as a non- financial member at any time of the year however you will not be eligible to vote on any matters. You may become a financial member at any time of the year however your eligibility to vote will come into effect at the general meeting following the receipt of your membership fee.

Canteen News Our canteen will not be operational until a new committee is

formed, volunteers come forward and a roster created. Our first P&C meeting for the year will be held on Monday 11

th

February at 4.00pm in the staffroom and we encourage all current P&C members to attend as well as parents who would like to join our hard working group. Our P&C run canteen raises thousands of dollars each year which is then used to enrich the education of all students at the school through the purchase of resources such as interactive televisions. If you would like to nominate for the canteen committee or put your name down for the roster please call the school office on 48 321 213.
