In the Classroom This term students across Stage 3 have participated in a science unit about creating energy. They have been learning about the amazing constructions of William Kamkwamba, ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’. He designed and built his own windmills as a fight for survival for his family and small village in the African country, Malawi.

Students have listened to William’s story and designed their own windmills, using materials that they have available. They also examined how wind power can be used to create electricity and suggested ways this could be utilised in their own lives.

Pat Stivala, Liam Garnham and Joe Stephenson show off the windmills that they made to demonstrate how they could be

used to make electricity.

Kayla McDonald proudly shares her retell of William’s story,

including her collage artwork based on the picture book about ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’.

Pyjama Day continued We couldn’t possibly fit all the great photos from our amazing Pyjama Day last Friday so here are a few more shots from last week. Our gorgeous video of Kindergarten thanking the staff of Crookwell District Hospital has had over 2000 views!

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of watching the very short and sweet video please visit our school Facebook page and have a look for yourself.

Alyssa Huang, Annabelle Caves, Addie Dawson, Evelyn Dark and Teagan Allport enjoyed recess together in their

warm pyjamas.

Miss Della and Ben Lang posed in their winter pyjamas last Friday. They were thrilled to support our amazing hospital

staff.

Thomas Cole, Harry Bailey, Emily Simpson, Ruby Butler,

Poppy Stephenson and Phoebe Murray wore a mix of onesies and warm winter pyjamas last Friday.

Peer Support Week 7 Peer Support groups discussed optimism and ways in which they could act and think positively when faced with a difficult situation. Groups also put together a set of group rules, while playing a game where each student had to ‘hop like a bilby’!

Ivy Stanger, Levi Webster, Lane Cunningham-Rowell, Reagan Willis, Remi Nieves and Bastian Huang hopping like bilbies in a game facilitated by their leader Stirling Inder who

is out of camera range.

An important message for the parents/caregivers of Year 6 students Under normal circumstances, parents/caregivers of Year 6 students would have received “camp notices” by now detailing cost, payment plan etc but because of the uncertainty surrounding the Sport and Recreation camp this has not happened. We remain hopeful that Year 6 camp, that is scheduled for Term 3 Week 7, will go ahead. If this is not the case, Stage 3 teachers are considering alternative opportunities for an overnight excursion towards the end of Term 4.

As soon as we know definitely if camp is going ahead, we will start fundraising in earnest but we will still require a substantial payment from parents to cover the cost of either camp or an alternate excursion. Please be advised that the cost of camp is about $350-$400 and we may require this payment at short notice.

Thank you for your understanding, Stage 3 teachers.

Staffing for Term 3 We would like to congratulate Miss Stephenson and Mr McGeechan on the upcoming birth of their second child. Miss Stephenson will be taking maternity leave starting from the end of this term. She will greatly miss the beautiful Kindergarten students but promises to come back and visit after she has her baby.

We are very fortunate that Miss Phoebe Bell is very excited to be the person to replace Miss Stephenson in Kindergarten for the rest of 2020. Miss Bell has already spent time getting to know the Kindergarten students and she is very excited to be their teacher for the rest of their first year of school. Mrs Atfield will continue on 5/6 Dingo until the end of the year. Thank you Mrs Atfield!

Mrs Jade Bell will also be returning in Term 3 for two days per week. Mrs Bell will not be officially on class but will definitely be visiting classrooms on different occasions to assist both staff and students. Mrs Bell will be primarily working with the executive team as we make our way through the NSW Department of Education External Validation process.

The reward of teaching! I have been teaching for 18 years and the vast majority of that time has been at Crookwell Public School. I still get such a thrill from going in to classrooms and hearing about what students are learning. I love when students come to read to me, show me how high they can jump or how fast they can run in the playground, show me how they couldn’t quite get the subtraction algorithm correct but they understand it now or give me a colourful drawing to put on my door.

These small moments are tiny steps forward in their learning journey and I feel so privileged to be able to share this with them. I also feel incredibly fortunate to be in a profession that inspires me and that I get genuine enjoyment from. Teaching is extremely challenging but also incredibly rewarding, thank you students of Crookwell Public School for brightening our days and for being happy, engaged learners!

Dorothy, Jack, Tenielle, Benji, Maaz and Isla came to my

office and read me their writing about ‘King Pig’. They were so proud of their learning!

Stage 1 girls Isabelle Hewitt and Faith Riles read beautifully on Thursday morning and have already developed a love for

reading.

Jackson Winsor and Sam Saville were excited to show me

their booklet on fractions.

Food for growing minds and bodies We have recently had a number of students asking for extra food or who have forgotten their lunch altogether. Please ensure your child/ren have sufficient food for the day. Students who are hungry cannot concentrate in class and can become tired and irritable.

We always have a small supply of bread and spreads for those who have simply left their lunch on the kitchen bench and we will not let anyone go hungry. Please check with your children that they have enough food and be mindful of young growing bodies that may require a little extra.

Loan Devices During the Learning from Home period the school generously loaned devices to families who required one. We are asking that these devices be returned to school by Monday 22nd June as they are required for school programs to continue

uninterrupted.

If devices are not returned we will have to ask for the replacement cost of the device. Thank you to the families who returned loan devices promptly.

Dental Check-ups Dental checks at schools may not continue in 2020 due to COVID-19. All parents/carers are encouraged to arrange a dental check-up for their children. You may want to consider the following options:

1) Call the Goulburn Dental Clinic on 1800 450 056. Please note there is a waiting list.

2) Contact your family dentist. 3) Check if you can use your private health insurance

with a local private dentist. 4) Medicare Child Dental Benefits Scheme – your child

may be eligible and this may allow for routine treatment at a local private dentist.

Enrolling Now For 2021 If you know of families who will have children starting school at Crookwell Public in 2021 please encourage them to return their Application for Enrolment Form promptly. This will allow staffing arrangements for next year to be firmly in place by the commencement of the new academic year.

Families new to the school community are invited to contact the school on 48 321 213 to arrange an interview with Mr Whittington, meet the staff, tour the school and receive a Crookwell Public School Information package.

Thank you to the families who have already completed and submitted their child’s application to enrol.

‘Flying Start’ begins Monday 27th July We are very excited to announce that we are able to begin our highly successful kindergarten orientation program, Flying Start, in Term 3. Miss O’Neill has prepared the Flying Start program and is now waiting patiently for it to begin on Monday 27th July (Week 2, Term 3).

In normal circumstances, we are able to have parents join us for these sessions so we can start to build positive relationships with all key stakeholders, that being parents, staff and students. Unfortunately, due to health and safety requirements set by the NSW Department of Education, we are unable to have adults, other than essential staff, on site at this time. This means that only teaching staff and pre-school students will be in the room for the sessions.

Parents of pre-school children are asked to leave their child with Miss O’Neill at the Kindergarten room for the session and to meet Miss O’Neill at the conclusion of the session to collect their child, while maintaining social distancing measures. These requirements may change later in Term 3 and we will notify parents of any changes as soon as possible.

We have already received numerous inquiries about Flying Start and Miss O’Neill has had some one-on-one meetings with parents of pre-school children. Miss O’Neill is only too happy to continue with one-on-one meetings if parents request them.

Children, regardless of the school in which they are enrolling, are encouraged to participate in Flying Start. This is an ideal opportunity for pre-school children to experience the school environment and routines while developing friendships.

If you know of any children wishing to attend, please let them know of the details of the program, or they may contact the school on 48 321 213 and speak with Mr Whittington.

We can’t wait to meet our pre-schoolers on Monday 27th July!

Koa Haynes and Ivy Stanger thrived from participating in

Flying Start in 2019.
