CAIA CONNECTION NEWSLETTER - OUR MOZAMBIQUE PROJECT

The June newsletter of the Caia Connection can be viewed by clicking the link below. Its all about the amazing work and young people we are supporting through our concerts, which Shivon has been telling us about. There are lots of great photos!

Caia Connection Newsletter  Submitted by Ian McLachlan, Tue/Thu tenor and Caia Connection board member.

FANS WANTED

We not only want lots of GHC Fans warming the seats in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall we also want fans to cool the GHC off should it get warm in the hall. We need tall and/or short, very quiet, preferably oscillating, fans that we can set up behind the risers. I have one tall one and 3 short ones I can bring plus a couple of power bars and a long extension cable. If you will be at both concerts and can add a fan or two please let me know at [email protected] Putting your name on them with a tag or a piece of masking tape would be wise.

Since I need to get over to Floyds to play host right after the Saturday concert I would also appreciate having a volunteer to oversee the dismantling of the fans on Saturday night and to put mine away in my car for me.

SILENT MINDFULNESS HELPS! (Reminder)

Page 3: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING · Web viewThe Tri-Lites are: Myrna Williams on piano, Lorraine Montgomery on alto sax, Charlie (91 years young) on drums and Doug Patterson,

This upcoming concert week will be have the most participants. The increased numbers each night will make casual chatter between songs even more disruptive than usual. Offering as much silent mindfulness as we can will make it easier for Shivon and Denis to lead our practices and for all of us to get our parts solidly into our hearts so that we can truly get higher in our concerts.

NO NUTS PLEASE!

There is at least one person in the choir who seriously allergic to nuts to the point that even the smell of nuts one someone’s breath can trigger a severe and dangerous reaction. Since we will all be mingling in close quarters for all three nights (rehearsal & concerts) we all need to keep this in mind and keep nuts out of our lives for that period of time.

CONCERT PHOTOS/VIDEOS WANTED

If you, or someone you know, takes photos or videos from the audience at our upcoming concerts please arrange for them to be shared with us for possible posting on our site’s Choir Photos or Videos pages.

A “RIFF BUDDY” REMINDER

Are you singing in the concert but have a weak spot or three you are still brushing up on?

Have you tried playing our practice files with Riff Buddy Media Player? This free player allows us to play any part of any MP3 file repeatedly. Any bar, any group of bars, any verse, the chorus, the coda…whatever ...you can select it, play it in repeat mode and sing it ‘til you’ve got it with Riff Buddy.

SUMMER COMMUNITY SUBMISSIONS

After the June 17-18 Combined Issue there will be no newsletters until the beginning of September. There may be, from time to time, GHC News & Business “Special Announcements”. In most cases when one of those goes out I will attach whatever submissions I have on hand (possibly just in the order received).

As with the newsletter:

Dated Events will be repeated in appropriate specials automatically until their date has passed.

Any other items that you want repeated must be re-submitted once they appear in one of these special announcements.

In order to keep my volunteer work in providing this extra summer service to a minimum please make sure that any item you send conforms to the newsletter submission guidelines specified on our site’s “Using Our Newsletter” page. If you

FLASH MOBSIDNEY DAYS PARADE (Jul 1)

All singers are invited to join in this Canada Day event:

The event will happen at 11:00am on Beacon Avenue at the corner of 5th and Beacon (the Parade will start at 11:30 this year).  There will be a rehearsal at the Mary Winspear Centre from 4-5 pm on Thursday, June 12, with a second rehearsal on Tuesday, June 24 from 7-8 pm.  It is OK go to just one if you can’t make both. The song being performed is "Happy" (Pharrell Williams’ YouTube version).

Page 5: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING · Web viewThe Tri-Lites are: Myrna Williams on piano, Lorraine Montgomery on alto sax, Charlie (91 years young) on drums and Doug Patterson,

The group performing will consist of both singers and dancers but, of course, likely some of the singers will also want to dance, while some of the (primarily) dancers may want to sing as well.  Some simple choreography is being prepared and whomever wishes to do so will be given the chance to learn it at the rehearsal(s).  They emphasize that learning the dance movements is not obligatory.  The music will be live and provided by the band that plays at the Rumrunner - I'm told they are quite good.

The basic "Flash Mob" idea is that the rehearsed group will run through the song (about 4 minutes) and then they will invite everyone around to join in during a second performance.  Of course, if what has happened in the past occurs, many of the crowd assembled for the Parade may start joining in the first time around!

In any case, it sounds like a fun experience with not too much pre-learning or preparation involved.

It's not necessary for people to let me know if they'll be joining in (although that would be nice) - they just need to turn up at the MWC on June 12 at 7:00pm.   Oh - and on the day, they should just wear something red or/and white - t-shirt, long-johns, whatever.

The choir has some 8’ wooden folding tables stored in the Church of Truth basement that we want to use for the picnic on June 22nd.

Pick up and drop off times can be arranged to suit your convenience.

CYCLE OF HOPE FOR ALS 2014

I am honoured to be riding with the Cycle of Hope again in August.  Our aim is to raise $50,000 for ALS - half of it will go to ALS BC for an electric wheelchair - the other half will go to ALS Canada for research.

Our fundraising efforts will include bottle drives during June and July, selling Level Ground Coffee and the awesome Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance for the second year running. This was such an amazing event last year.

Save those bottles!!! In June and July anyone can take their bottles (unsorted) to any of the following bottle depots where the charity bins are for ALS Cycle of Hope.

We train 3 days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So I won't be able to time travel to collect them at choir.

DOG TEAM TO DAWSON

I've written another book, Dog Team to Dawson: A Quest for the Cosmic Bannock and other Yukon stories. I'll bring copies to the choir over the next few weeks. Regular retail price is $19.77. Choir members can buy for $15.00, with $5.00 of that going to the concert Scholarship Fund.

From the book’s cover:

"Dog Team to Dawson is a nostalgic collection of true Yukon stories written by bestselling author Bruce Batchelor. This book is the prequel to Bruce's Nine Dog Winter, providing readers of that classic account with earlier adventures into the heart and soul of the Yukon Territory."

I’m usually at choir on Tuesdays and sometimes on Thursdays and I might make it out for a Monday session.

Anyone in our choir community who won’t, or might not, be able to connect with me at choir is welcome to contact me to make alternate arrangements by emailing [email protected] or calling 250-380-0998.

thanks, cheers,

REACHING BLUE: FINDING HOPE BENEATH THE SURFACE (Jun 6)

Reaching Blue is the story of a coastal way of life under threat, where hope is found in stories of our past while facing the challenges of the future.

A writer. An oyster farmer. An ocean scientist. Fifteen cinematographers contribute imagery from deep-sea submarines, advanced ocean research vessels to coastal communities- exposing the changes our coastal waters face, and connect to our world’s oceans.

Do we have the knowledge and technology required to understand ocean change before time runs out?
