President's message

I am pleased to report on the work of the Australian Cranio-Maxillo Facial Foundation (Craniofacial Australia) for the year 2014/2015.

The Foundation enjoyed a successful year in raising funds in a tough environment and finished the financial year with a surplus of $369,101. This is an excellent result which enabled the Foundation to meet its charter to support the Australian Craniofacial Unit (ACFU) in the areas of: research; purchase of specialty surgical equipment and equipment for the Kate Hill Ward (the craniofacial patient ward

of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital); support for patients and their families; supply of nylon patient skull models; and the funding of overseas teaching clinics. The Foundation has striven to increase its financial assistance in all of these target areas. This year Australian Craniofacial Unit has continued its achievements with successfully combining high quality surgical work working within a very tight budget. Its Medical Training Teams continue to provide quality teaching in overseas countries such as Indonesia which includes Bali and Manado. There have been ongoing negotiations with Vietnam regarding medical training visits to that country. As a commencement to this relationship there will be three specialists visiting ACFU for an eight day educational visit in 2016.The current economic climate has made fundraising a difficult task. Bearing this in mind, ACMFF Staff continue to constantly monitor the Foundation’s finances and our expenses are prudently managed at all times as there is no room for any complacency. I am pleased to report that our fundraising strategies were so successful for 2014/2015 as to result in a net surplus for the year. The fund raising strategy was to maintain consistency with our fund raising efforts by way of quarterly Newsletters, Race Day, Breakfast with Julie Bishop, Adelaide Cup Luncheon, Film Nights, Winter Luncheon and the Rock Music function. As the struggle for the “charity dollar” becomes more and more competitive we at ACMFF have to become more innovative in our thinking regarding the functions we co-ordinate. It is very pleasing and gratifying the number of patients and patient’s parents who undertake various forms of fundraising on our behalf. I acknowledge the assistance of our very valued Ambassadors and much respected volunteers for their work and support with fund raising events.

I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful support of the service clubs namely Apex, Lions, Rotary, Probus and Kiwanis for their ongoing commitment to ACMFF. This support is made in response of Ambassador Andrea Ogier and staff members Bronwyn Chant and Bob Snewin attending many meetings around the state with wonderful groups of committed people and presenting updates to the meetings on the ACMFF activities as well as the work of the Craniofacial Unit. Thanks to our other Ambassadors Sharon Forrester-Jones (Ladies Long Lunch), Pamela McDonald (Winter Luncheon) and Sandra Hausler (Keith Melbourne Cup Luncheon) for their wonderful efforts in running these functions and raising funds for ACMFF. I also acknowledge our Ambassadors Isobel Redmond and Annabel Digance for their support indeed we are delighted to say we have support from both sides of the political spectrum. I would be remiss with this report if I did not acknowledge the outstanding efforts of the ACMFF staff. They continue to work as a professional and united team for the Foundation with results obtained during the last 12 months being a fair refl ection of their united efforts. The Board of ACMFF continues to work diligently for the betterment of the organization; its effi ciency is greatly enhanced by having a small team of 6 committed members. I acknowledge the contribution of each individual board member; our meticulous Treasurer Claire Milne, David McLeod for his wise counsel, Nicholas Pyne for fi nancial advice, Surgeon Walter Flapper and the research input of Professor Peter Anderson. On your behalf I thank and congratulate them all for their dedication and hard work on behalf of the Foundation. Finally I express my personal thanks and appreciation to the very large number of people who make up our “Craniofacial family” – our dedicated board members; the fundraising committee members, the staffs of both the Foundation and the Unit and of course the growing number of volunteers, sponsors, constant donors and supporters nationally who make our programs a reality.Professor D. J. David ACPresident , Australian Cranio-Maxillo Facial Foundation

20115 Snapsot

euests programBequests from caring individuals comprise the most signifi cant source of funds to support the work of the ACMFF. In the Year 2014-15, Craniofacial Australia received $377,000 in the form of bequests. We received a major bequest from the Estate of Dorothy Walker with other signifi cant bequests received from the estates of Faye Buchan, Jean Guiver, Carol Kohler, Gail Tunks, Valma Tongs and Clifford Gordon.

Sponsorsips grants and donationsIn February 2012, Synthes Australia (now DePuy Synthes) entered into a four year arrangement with Craniofacial Australia as a principal sponsor. This arrangement continues until 31 December 2015. DePuy Synthes is a major global supplier of surgical and medical devices.Once again this year we gratefully acknowledge funding from the Australian Executor Trustees Discretionary Charitable Trust and the Apex Foundation.Throughout the year the Foundation gratefully received donations from various service clubs, including Rotary, Lions and Probus. In addition, a great number of small businesses have lent support-in-kind to the ACMFF for our fundraising activities and we greatly appreciate this generosity.Community support remained strong throughout the year with sustained contributions from the public and from loyal regular supporters following publication of each edition of our newsletter and after media appearances by patients or surgeons of the Australian Craniofacial Unit.

ResearcOverall, it has been a year of mixed fortunes for the research team. On the plus side, our pioneering work developing adjunct treatments for craniosynostosis was presented at the International Society for Craniofacial Surgery Conference in Tokyo in September. Also, collaborations with the Stem cell group at SAHMRI, Tissue Engineering at Uni SA and the IMVS have resulted in signifi cant publications in the scientifi c literature. As well, two university students working on research projects supervised by the department have won international awards and been invited to represent Australia at major International scientifi c meetings in Washington and New Zealand. However, it continues to be a diffi cult environment for the scientifi c community to function within the Women’s and Children’s hospital, with continuing uncertainty regarding the type and geographical location of laboratory facilities.

olunteersVolunteers continue to provide the backbone of the Foundation’s Fundraising Committee and in providing assistance at all fundraising events.Volunteers also instigate and co-ordinate many events in various locations across South Australia with signifi cant effect on local fundraising and on our bequest program.

CommunicationsOur CEO Bob Snewin and Corporate & Community Relations Manager, Bronny Chant, regularly speak to community groups about the work of Craniofacial Australia and the Craniofacial Unit. Author and Craniofacial Ambassador Andrea Ogier has continued to be a hugely popular speaker to such groups. The Foundation has continued to publish its quarterly newsletter ‘Craniofacial Austraia’. The newsletter has been very successful in maintaining our presence in the eyes of continuing supporters and has a substantial effect on unsolicited contributions after each edition. Our newsletter is edited by ACMFF Communications Manager, Ian Chance.

We continue with regular advertising of the Foundation in targeted publications which we believe has signifi cant effect on our Bequests Program. We have also published a new information booklet aimed at encouraging and facilitating bequests to the Foundation. This 24-page booklet contains a number of craniofacial patient stories, details of the Craniofacial Unit and the Foundation and information on how to go about making charitable bequests.

Patient supportIn this fi nancial year, Craniofacial Australia supported ACFU patients and families in need through providing fares, accommodation and/or living expenses while in recovery. It also helped a family meet the costs of an Assistance Dog for their child, a craniofacial patient who also suffers intractable seizures. Such support is determined on a case by case basis. The Foundation purchased twelve nylon skulls to be used for specifi c patient surgical planning at a total cost of $16,900 and supplied patient aids such as specialised feeding bottles and toothbrushes, headphones and toys.
