COVER CROP MARKET UPDATE EARLY PLANNING AND SEED SECURITY ARE ESSENTIAL THIS SEASON
With Spring finally upon us, now is a good time to give you an
update on what our team has heard related to the cover crop
seed market. Keep in mind things can change quickly in our
industry, as weather conditions and other unforeseen events
often impact supply on both a regional and national level. Below
are some important updates and reminders.
COVER CROP INDUSTRY SUPPLY • Currently, most cover crop brassica and legume species are
in good supply• Annual ryegrass (and other cool-season grasses) are in
shorter supply. Due to problematic winter weather in many areas, we’ve seen an increased demand for many forage grasses and small grains this spring. This could result in an even tighter hold on annual ryegrass and other “dual-purpose” cover crops this summer and fall.
• Small grains are expected to be very tight this summer. The Northern Plains and Canada (where much of the traditionally higher quality winter small grains are grown for seed production) have seen a decrease in acres. Also, extremely dry conditions last fall in these areas may have influenced stand quality headed into grain maturity. Consequently, uncertainty exists on how great the impact could be.
