On Monday 15th August a

new medical centre will

open in Pomona.

“Cooroora Family Health”,

situated at Shop 5/3 Station

Street, Pomona, is opposite

the Old Station Art Gallery.

The partners in this new

venture are Dr Ann Buchan

and Dr Sharon Chant, who

many may know have

previously worked together at Cooran Medical Centre.

Dr Buchan says, “Over the last few years the practice at

Cooran has grown into a successful venture, we now feel we

need larger premises. We have been seeing many patients from

further a field, and simply need more space and staff to provide

the care to our patients.”

Some familiar faces are coming with them. Dr Kathy Isbel will

be joining Ann and Sharon in September. Nurse Ruth, and

Michaela and Julie on reception will be there to welcome you to

our new clinic. In addition we are happy to add Nurse Jane

Smart to our team. Jane has worked with Ann in Tewantin.

Ann, Sharon, and their friendly team will be providing the same

high standard of care, aimed at the local communities in par-

ticular, but with extended hours and extended services, and two

wonderful, experienced nurses managing a large treatment

room, and Allied Health Providers soon to be available.

Dr Buchan has worked for nearly ten years in Qld, living at

Federal and then Cooran. Prior to this she was a GP in

Victoria, working in a Breast Clinic and a Women's Health

Clinic, as well as many years in Family General Practice. Ann

brings twenty three years of general practice experience, and is

committed to being part of the Greater Hinterland Community.

Dr Chant studied medicine after many years of practice in the

field of complementary medicine, particularly homeopathy, and

has been living in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast since

1989. Sharon has a wide ranging appreciation of various types

of therapies, offering a holistic combination that will give a new

set of choices to patients.

Together with their supportive staff they hope to offer their

patients a new approach to wellness, integrating their

experiences into a community based service that suits the needs

of this wonderful area.

Both Sharon and Ann look forward to welcoming old friends

and new at Cooroora Family Health.

Appointment bookings can be made by ringing 54851321, from

Wednesday 10th; and we will commence seeing patients from

Monday 15th August.

LAPTOP

When Kin Kin school boy, Dylan McSweeney needed a Lap Top Computer to help him with his schoolwork, the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club came to the rescue!!

Dylan, who is in Year 1, has Cystic Fibrosis and misses a lot of schooling because of his condition. Kin Kin School has the capacity to provide online teaching through a pro-gramme called Eliminate, for which all staff have been trained, allowing Dylan to attend real time class through a computer video link. As President of the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club, I had the privilege of pre-senting the Lap Top to Dylan.

Readers of the Cooroora Connect need to be made aware of several highly misleading statements about the Kin Kin quarry in the July issue. Firstly the court case brought against the quarry by the Kin Kin 'Community' Group (which

has an average attendance at it's meetings of only 18 people) did not 'collapse', it was dismissed, the judge ruling against the KKCG on all four points. The statement that 200 people attended the protest against the quarry is misleading, the protest was held at the Pomona Markets, and the actual number of people involved in the protest was, by all accounts, fewer than 40. Neilsen's Gravels have stated that the absolute maximum number of trucks will be 40/day, and that they expect fewer than 15/day for several years after the quarry begins operations. They also say that of the traffic generated by the quarry, approximately 75% will go through Pomona. If the claim of a truck going through Pomona every 5 minutes was correct, it would mean a total of 87 trucks/day, or 44,000 tonnes per year MORE than the EPA approval for the quarry. As for the utterly nonsensical claim of up to 240 trucks/day, no-one knows where that claim originated, but it is simply impossible. It would mean an annual production of 2.88m tonnes (the quarry is only approved for 1m and Neilsen's say they never expect to reach that figure), and the 40 tonne trucks would have only 1 minute and 24 seconds to be loaded, again, IMPOSSIBLE. Furthermore, the ENTIRE Sunshine and Cooloola Coast aggregate market is significantly LESS than 240 trucks/day. From Neilsen's assertion that for the first 5 or more years of operation they expect fewer than 15 trucks/day, one could expect at most to see a truck through Pomona every half hour, and that the school bus may pass 1 truck a day. The 'environmental concerns' are completely unfounded, water samples taken from Wahpungah Creek downstream from the quarry site after heavy rain this year showed levels of Total Dissolved Solids less than HALF the amount recommended for drinking water, and even less than found in Noosa tap water! EPA testing of water from the sediment catchment dams at the site showed sediment levels were LOWER than in Wahpungah Creek upstream of the site. Several locals are already employed undertaking site works, and Neilsen's say they will at least double the number when operations begin. Neilsen's have made the offer to both SCRC and Main Roads to supply any quarry material needed for local road upgrades at cost, in addition to paying for half the cost of upgrading Shepperson's Lane. This is on top of the significant improvements to local roads since the quarry was announced, several local roads have been widened and sections sealed, and the State Government has announced $16.5m to upgrade Kin Kin Rd at Wolvi. It is also worth noting that since the range road was first constructed in 1904, there has never been a collision between a car and truck, in spite of decades of use by milk tankers and timber trucks. The quarry will bring immense benefits to the local community, and the noisy minority opposing it need to accept that it is going ahead.

KOM UPDATE..... Over 15,000 people gathered to watch all the action live on the big screen and the crowd roared as Neil Labinsky made this his 6th consecutive win in this year’s Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge with a time of 24.17min, not far behind him was Shay Williamson, 26.18min and Sam Clark 26.53min, both from New Zealand. Hubertien Wichers reclaimed her title as the Mountain Queen with a time of 32.38 making this her 5th win, followed by Sarah Stacey 38.06 from Australia and Megan Edhouse from New Zealand with a time of 38.18.

Neil cemented his place in the 32 year history of the Pomona King of the Mountain Challenge with this year’s win as only 2 other man, Barry Prosser and George Fewtrell, have won the King of the Moun-

tain 6 times consecutively.
