QUT Students to

be hosted by PCH

The Pomona township will become an outdoor lecture theatre for a group of Queensland University of Technology (QUT) students for three days in April when they will study the town’s architecture and streetscapes as part of Project Week, when normal studies are suspended while students take part in practical work in the community.

The week is designed to provide real-life preparation for the future careers that students want to pursue. So if you see a group of

young people with cameras or electronic notebooks walking around town, please make them welcome.

A practical element of the students’ visit is that they will consider design concepts for Pomona’s new fire station, which is proposed to be built on the site of the old plant nursery, adjacent to the existing Ambulance Station. The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) has bought the site and, while no money has been confirmed for a new fire station building, it is hoped construction funding will be confirmed in the 2013-14 state Budget. The QRFS will begin a round of public consultation on the building’s design mind-year and it is hoped the students’ efforts will help inform that process. The students will be in town from 16 April to 18 April.

MANIFESTO CHARTS COMMUNITY’S DIRECTIONS FOR NOOSA COUNCIL

A week after Noosa residents voted overwhelmingly to restore local council rule, a very clear picture is emerging of the values they want the new council to adopt and implement in pursuit of a reborn Noosa region that celebrates our pristine environment, lifestyle, strong community spirit and an expanded non-polluting economy.

Strategic planning and marketing consultant, Allan Bonsall, today released a ‘community manifesto’ that summarises the feedback from four open-forum meetings attended by about 400 people in the lead-up to the compulsory referendum in which more than 80 per cent of Noosa voters opted to separate from the super Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC). Noosa will have its own council operating from 1 January 2014.

Allan facilitated the meetings by asking attendees why they had chosen to live in the region, what had changed for better or worse under the SCRC and what they wanted the Noosa region to look like in 15 years. He undertook to collate and release the answers as a ‘manifesto’.

According to Allan, the results are uniform across the coast and the hinterland. “People want to be involved and connected with each other, and with their individual communities, while recognising their differences. Clearly, they also want to be deeply involved with, and actively contribute to, a new Noosa Council. That needs to be taken into account when deciding the structure of our new council entity,” Allan said.

“The homogenised SCRC they felt, robbed them of their identity and dealt with them at arm’s length. That has never been the Noosa way,” he said.

“Through the manifesto, people have given an incoming Noosa Council clear new marching orders.”

They want community spirit fostered within individual localities and across the region, with a strong emphasis on values espoused through the internationally-recognised Noosa Biosphere. Their future Noosa is a place of minimal visual pollution, no traffic lights or parking meters, over-development or ‘suburbanisation’ that does away with green space between villages and towns.

The vision includes a flourishing economy where tourism and agriculture are core strengths, augmented by new job opportunities provided by innovative and creative industries supported by modern communication technology. Not only education to tertiary level, but health and aged care also should be outstanding, while transport solutions should be appropriate to the environment and the needs of the population.

Allan continued: “In contrast to the SCRC, a clear majority of people want a new Noosa Council that is prepared to engage opening and transparently. They desire a council with the foresight to plan for future growth, but not unfettered population and housing growth de-coupled from job creation. Housing should be varied and affordable, according to the feedback. “Council decision-making should be guided by a desire to strengthen community spirit and well-being, also by putting the environment first. There was a strong indication for a council that rules in favour of prosperity for people and the region and does not support the vested interests of a few.”

Allan said those that the state government intended putting in charge of the transition to a new Noosa Council had an obligation to heed the people’s manifesto and the strong desire for change evident in the strength of the de-amalgamation vote – the highest among the four Queensland communities given an opportunity to split from their larger councils.

“White it won’t be business as usual, the mandate is there for Noosa to become a beacon of difference among local governments around Australia,” he said. Alan Bonsall is also the chairman of Noosa Hinterland Alliance group more about NHA, who they are and their achievements in future editions.

Fire station

for Federal In the wake of news that Pomona will have a new

fire station built on flood-free land, the Federal Rural Fire Brigade is to get its own headquarters building. The large four-bay industrial shed will be located at 25 Middle Creek Road on land leased by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service. The project had been delayed due to issues related to the cancelled Traveston Crossing Dam, which would have backed up waters to parts of Federal. Plans must proceed through the council building approval process, with a start on construction expected before the end of the year. The cost won’t be known until the plans are finalised. The people of Federal are anticipating their new fire station, which is further sign of progress in the small hamlet. A new primary school was built at Federal when the upgraded Bruce Highway impacted on the old school grounds.

April 24th “Salute Our Troops”

May 22nd “Carry On Country”

Two months of the year gone and I am nowhere near starting my “to do” list for 2013. By the time this gets to print it will be Easter and then

before we know it, Christmas.

Unfortunately the rain has been interfering with our walks of late. There have been quite a few days when we did not walk due to the rain and/or the condition of the roads. The beginning of our favourite

walk has been impassable with the Subway being flooded.

We are still meeting at 6.30 am on week days in front of the Community House but after Easter, on 2 April, we will go back to our 7.00 am start. We have another new member, Karen, who heard

about us via this newsletter and is enjoying her walks.

Unfortunately she has not yet been able to attend a Moon Walk. Both January and February Moon Walks were called off due to the inclement weather. We will try again on Wednesday 27 March which is the precise date of the full moon. The April Moon Walk is on 24

April. Hopefully both of those will go ahead.

For more information on our daily walks or the Moon Walks phone

Assunta on 5485 2935.

Meals on Wheels goes solar

A SOLAR panel array on the roof of Pomona's Memorial Hall is set to bring a big reduction in the power bill for Pomona and District Meals on Wheels. MOW president Michael Innis said the 5kw installation commissioned last week was already showing benefits to the organisation. "Our kitchen operates three days a week and it's already apparent that power consumption from the grid is down on those days. For the rest of the week there'll be an even bigger monetary benefit for us, as we were able to have the panels installed in time to receive the high buy-back tariff." The solar panel installation was made possible by funding from the Federal Government agency Home and Community Care, and was carried out with the co-operation of the Hall Committee and Sunshine Coast Council. The panels are mounted on the rear roof of the hall so as not to detract from the traditional appearance of the historic building from the street. Power costs are one of the biggest recurring expenses faced by Meals on Wheels, a voluntary organisation which currently provides almost 700 meals a month to a growing number of clients in Pomona, Cooroy, Eumundi, Cooran, Kin Kin and Boreen Point. Volunteers able to help with deliveries, or with kitchen or office work, are always welcome.

Cutting the Ties That Bind

- An introduction -

We are all bound by invisible chains that bind us, block us and keep us from being who we really are. These ties come from childhood, from family environment, culture, fears or reactions to events that took place years ago. A method developed by Phyllis Krystal can help us to cut the ties that bind us to anyone or anything that acts as an authority and exerts control over us. The exercises that are contained in this method can help to free us from everything that prevents our Real Self from being expressed. Sandra Taylor has recently returned from Munich, Germany where she completed a training program with Phyllis Krystal in this method. She will be presenting the basics in a low key, enjoyable session. The course is a two morning commitment.

Call for festival volunteers

Noosa’s premier community arts event celebrating creativity and nature in our world-renowned Biosphere, the Floating Land Festival, is on again from 31 May to 9 June and is in need of volunteers. If you want to experience the 2013 celebration, make a contribution or gain confidence, volunteers are needed to staff the information tent, act as pedestrian marshalls, be school workshop assistants and provide on-site assistance during the 10 days the festival is conducted around the shores of Lake Cootharaba and at Boreen Point. Floating Land began as a biennial outdoor sculpture event and has since grown to include contributions from writers, performance artists, musicians, photographers, academics and scientists. This year’s festival theme, titled Nature’s Dialogue, explores the intersection among art perspectives, the principles of natural design and community dynamics. The thematic framework is biomimicry, defined as using the inspiration of nature in the creative industries, science, technology and culture.

Volunteer induction is provided. For more details and to register your interest, please call Chris Glass on (07) 5441 9376.

Volunteers Needed!!!

Things are changing at the Community House and we need your support.

Due to financial constraints, Kathryn Shewring, community engagement coordinator at the House for over 4 years, will be leaving us at the end of May and Heather Manders, coordinator at the House for over 6 years is now working two days

instead of three. Over the last few years we have worked hard to give the community what it has asked for. This includes:-

information and programs supporting health and well-being such as health forums, workshops and a thriving community kitchen

teaching great healthy eating

information morning teas providing a breadth of information on a range of topics

Seniors Week activities

Youth Week activities

events for the whole community such as our Op Shop Bop, local ‘Fun & Friendship’ lunches, the Night of Lights at Christmas, the
