3. Once you have converted the fi le or slide(s) needed to PDF fi le(s), you will need to open each PDF or fi gure in Adobe Photoshop. To do this, go to “File > Open” in Adobe Photoshop and select the PDF fi le. When you tell it to open, you should see a dialog box prompting for information: This is where you will set the resolution for your fi gure:

1200 dpi/ppi for line art (fi gures which are strictly line graphs with no grey tones)

600 dpi/ppi for “combination” art (fi gures with both halftone art and line art)

Failure to set the resolution here will result in a quality loss if you increase the resolution later.

4. After the resolution and colorspace have been set, click “OK”. This will open the fi le in Adobe Photoshop as an image fi le. While in Photoshop, go to the menu and click “Layer>Flatten Image”, crop away excess white space around the fi gure, scale it to the correct size and then go to “Save As” to save your image as a TIFF fi le using LZW compression (not JPEG or ZIP).
