Celebrating Decades of Dedication: Sonja and Lowell Noteboom Lowell and Sonja Noteboom are the recipients of the 2014 Duet Award, the highest honor offered by MacPhail recognizing those that advance its mission.

As he accepted the award, Lowell shared the story of MacPhail’s transition from being part of the University of Minnesota to an independent 501(c)(3) organization. Lowell and a dedicated group of visionary board members helped MacPhail grow to where it is today—earning approximately 70% of its income and attracting approximately $4 million annually in contributions, including gifts to the strategic MacPhail 6.0 initiative.

Sonja recalled being a MacPhail Suzuki parent and the joy she felt years later as a board member when she brought her grandchildren to MacPhail for Early Childhood Music classes.

The Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA) was the organization recipient of the 2014 Duet Award. Since 2010, MELSA and MacPhail have offered more than 600 free events reaching 21,260 children and adults at public libraries in the metro area as well as produced two original CDs reaching nearly 50,000 families.

Nominations for the 2015 Duet Award are underway. Visit MacPhail.org for more information on how to nominate deserving individuals or organizations.

Oksana BrynMarch 9, 1924–April 4, 2015MacPhail is mourning the death of Oksana Bryn who joined the voice faculty in 1969 and taught hundreds of students over more than 45 years. Many of them achieved prominence as professional singers in opera and other popular styles.

Bryn attended the Theatre and Music Conservatory in Ukraine, studying with Salomea Kruszelinicka and teachers

in the United States, including Donna Pegors who studied at MacPhail.

Minnesota Governor Rudy Perpich declared March 24, 1985, as “Oksana Bryn Day” for her contributions as a Ukrainian artist and educator to

the cultural life of Minnesota and the United States.

In 1997 the Oksana Bryn Voice Scholarship was established with contributions from a recital. With many gifts from admirers and students over the years, the scholarship has grown to support the studies of two MacPhail voice students each year.

Ever a believer in the power of music, in her final days Oksana taught a voice lesson to her hospice care worker and told everyone to skip buying flowers and put money toward her scholarship for students. For more information, contact Jennifer Halcrow, 621.767.5309 or [email protected].

DEAR FRIENDS,Our community has an incredible and growing need for an array of music services. At the Music Matters Luncheon, we heard a compelling story about MacPhail Music Therapy client Rob, told by his father. As a guitarist myself Rob’s story really resonates with me. Rob came to us after experiencing a traumatic brain injury. Music is a bright spot in his often difficult life journey. I look forward to the day that MacPhail Music Therapy is available to every person in need, regardless of financial constraints. Without donor support, MacPhail would not be able to serve people like Rob.Working with you to expand the reach of music is a privilege—and Take Note is an opportunity to say thank you.

The 2015 Music Matters Luncheon was an exceptional event! We are sincerely grateful to all our partners. Special thanks go to Lifetouch, an incredibly generous corporate sponsor. Over the past two years, Lifetouch has created four inspiring videos

for MacPhail, in addition to providing all of the event print materials. The luncheon videos were short clips from Lifetouch Life to the Max programs. Thank you to all of the individuals, corporations and community organizations that helped make the 2015 Music Matters Luncheon possible.

Thank You

MacPhail Giving Voice Chorus under the direction of Jeanie Brindley-Barnett.
