In line with the College’s Co-curricular and Enrichment Policy,we firmly believe a healthy mind and a healthy body are key toall-round development and as such we provide a wide variety

of activities and physical sports to our pupils.

An outstanding programme is not about filling time or ‘keepingpeople busy’, but more about creating enriching experiences thatignite a spark, nurture a quiet confidence, build resilience andprovide the bedrock of future achievement.

Staff are committed to providing exciting opportunities that engageour pupils and challenge body and mind in exploring the unknown.

The energy of our programme is inspiring, the approach inclusiveand the emphasis is on enjoying life and seizing what it has to offer.

This brochure is packed with our latest co-curricular programmeactivities for the Michaelmas term 2018.

ARTS & CRAFTSMiss Beynon [email protected]

Pupils will be creating art work based on theUrdd Eisteddfod theme and will have theopportunity to enter the creative artscompetitions, using a variety of material andtechniques.

Maximum 10 participants per session.

BASKETBALLMr Wilkinson [email protected]

Basketball is one of our option sports and isled by both teachers and pupils to developthe skills of the game and overall generalfitness of the participants.

Basketball is only available in theMichaelmas term.

CHESSMr Rodgers [email protected]

Chess Club runs weekly for both beginnersand more advanced players. The College willbe entering various tournaments.

CHINESE External ProviderMrs Burgess [email protected]

This is a fantastic opportunity to undertakelanguage lessons with a visiting tutor on theUniversity of Wales exchange programme.Potential exists to study up to a GCSE levelqualification.

Maximum six participants per session.

CHRISTIANITY EXPLORED Father Tim [email protected]

Christianity Explored is an opportunity forpupils to ask any question about faith andChristianity. The Alpha series is used and weexplore the Christian faith throughinteractive sessions.

Each session will look at a different questionaround faith and is designed to encourageopen conversation. The course is designedfor young people with no Christian orchurch background, as well as those whowould call themselves Christians and isopen to all regardless of faith or belief.

Sessions will be accompanied byrefreshments and games.

COLLEGE CHOIR Mr Williams [email protected]

The College boasts an outstanding Choirthat performs each week in Chapel and atmany concerts and occasions throughoutthe year.

The Choir tours, most recently in Germany,and in March 2018 performed the MozartRequiem in Brecon Cathedral.

COMBINED CADET FORCE Miss Trigg [email protected]

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) offers anincredible opportunity to develop a broadrange of skills and interests. Cadets have anoption to join either the Army or RAFsection and will study either the army orRAF training programme, including drill,turnout, first aid, fieldcraft, skill at arms,map and compass and command tasks.

Cadets can aspire to selection for the teamthat competes in the national CambrianPatrol competition, develop specific skillssuch as climbing and caving on Armysponsored expeditions and attend campsand courses around the UK and abroad.

All Year 9 and 10 pupils join the CCF, withpupils in Year 8 joining in the Trinity term,and it is an optional activity from Year 11.

CREST AWARDSMrs Thomas [email protected]

The Crest Awards are aimed at pupils inYears 9 and 10, giving them a chance towork independently and take responsibilityfor their own STEM (Science TechnologyEngineering Mathematics) project.

As part of the award, pupils will beparticipating in hands on scienceinvestigations, enquiry-based learning andsolving real life challenges through practicalinvestigation and discussion.

Maximum 12 participants per session.

DANCE External ProviderMr Rodgers [email protected]

Dance classes will consist of a mixture ofZumba, Street Dance and Musical Theatre,which will alternate throughout the term. Itis a great way to get fit.

Maximum 20 participants per session.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARDMr Morandi [email protected]

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is areal adventure from beginning to end. It isthe antithesis of sitting on a sofa watchinglife passing by. The Award is achieved bycompleting a personal programme ofactivities in four sections (five for Gold):Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expeditionand for Gold, a Residential.

Pupils will find themselves helping peopleor the community, getting fitter, developingskills, going on an expedition and takingpart in a residential activity.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONSMr Rees [email protected]

Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a tabletop game where players take the role ofadventurers in a fantasy world whereoutcomes are based not only on characterskills but also on the roll of the dice.

The game is entirely imagination based sono purchases are necessary to take part buta set of roleplaying dice (D20, D12, D10,D8, D6, D4) and a player’s handbook (Fifthedition) are useful.

Maximum six participants per session.

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE (EAL) Mrs Smith [email protected]

EAL sessions are for pupils across all yeargroups for whom English is an additionallanguage.

Pupils receive support with translation andproof reading of work.

ENGLISH EXTRAMiss Evans [email protected]

A compulsory session for pupils who wereunfortunate not to have passed their EnglishLanguage GCSE.

Other sessions are timetabled in normallesson times.

FENCINGMr Rodgers [email protected]

Weekly sessions are run during a lunch time,introducing the basics of this exciting sport.

This activity is billed termly.

FITNESS SUITEMiss Flowers [email protected]

Pupils are given the opportunity to use thefitness suite to both improve their ownfitness and well-being and support sportspecific programmes.

Pupils have access to a strength andconditioning specialist who can tailortraining programmes to meet individual andsporting needs. Pupils are also given generictraining sessions to improve many areas offitness including aerobic capacity, strength,power and strength endurance.

FOOTBALLMr Jones [email protected]

Football is a mixed participation sport forpupils in Years 9-13, with training twiceweekly coupled with home and awayfixtures against local colleges andindependent schools.

Trips to watch professional fixtures are alsooffered.

FURTHER MATHEMATICSMr Soundy [email protected]

This is a compulsory choice for those takingFurther Mathematics in the Sixth Form.

The sessions will continue the study of theFurther Mathematics curriculum.

GIRLS’ RUGBYMiss Flowers [email protected]

Girls’ rugby has grown nationally andinternationally over the last few years and asa result has become a very popular activityin the College.

The focus of the programme is on skill setdevelopment, fitness and tacticalunderstanding of the 7s game. The activity isgrowing in popularity and can be accessedall year round.

The girls play local fixtures andtournaments, one being the Rosslyn ParkNational School 7s – the world's largestschools’ rugby tournament.

HOCKEYMiss Flowers [email protected]

Hockey is one of the major games in thegirls’ sporting programme and boys with aninterest in hockey are also able to attend.

Training takes place twice weekly withfixtures every Wednesday and someSaturdays.

The hockey programme is designed to meetthe needs of the recreational player as wellas the elite, ensuring an all-inclusive club.

LAMDAMr Davies [email protected]

LAMDA (London Academy of Music andDramatic Art) pupils, depending on thechosen course, will learn how to use theirvoices to communicate an idea through astrong grasp of diction, vocal projection andclarity of voice, while learning to use postureand body language to better get the messageacross.

They will develop a deep understanding ofthe given literature and the ability tointerpret any other they may come across in

future. Through these lessons, pupils willlearn a plethora of skills to help them findtheir inner voice and use it confidently.

We live in a fast-paced world wherecommunication is key, and the key tocommunication is understanding. LAMDAhelps to give you long term powers ofpersuasive eloquence.

Extra classes also run outside of co-curricular and are charged separately.

MARINE SCIENCEMrs Owen [email protected]

This is an excellent opportunity for MoreAble and Talented (MAT) pupils in Years 11and 12 with a keen interest in Biology,Geography and Ecology to complete anadditional AS Level qualification.

It will include a four day field trip toPembrokeshire with the Field StudiesCouncil to explore rocky shore ecology,estuarine interactions and sand dunesuccession. Topics covered will include coralreefs, hydrothermal vents, the chemistry ofseawater and plate tectonics.

MATHS EXTRAMr Bedford [email protected]

A compulsory session for pupils who wereunfortunate not to have passed theirMathematics GCSE.

Other sessions are timetabled in normallesson times.

MAT MATHEMATICS Mr Soundy [email protected]

This is an opportunity for our More Ableand Talented (MAT) mathematicians in Years10 and 11 to undertake an additionalmathematics qualification.

The content will support and enhanceopportunities for further mathematicalstudies post GCSE.

MOOC/EPQ Dr Bryant-Glover [email protected]

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) areonline university courses. Pupils have theopportunity to choose a topic fromhundreds of courses available. Instead ofattending lectures pupils will complete thecourse over a set number of weeks using theUniversity materials and resources postedonline.

The EDEXCEL Extended ProjectQualification (EPQ) specification allowspupils to embark on a largely self-directedand self-motivated project. Pupils mustchoose a topic, plan, research and developideas; creativity and curiosity is encouraged,and pupils may choose any subject matterwhich does not need to be related to acourse currently being studies.

ORCHESTRA Mr Williams [email protected]

The College orchestra has grownconsiderably in the last years and providesthe backbone at major College concerts.

The orchestra tackles a wide variety ofmusical genres and is as comfortable withclassical music as it is with modern popularmusic and pieces from musicals.

RUGBY ANALYSISMr Thomas [email protected]

This is a new addition to our programmeand provides senior players an opportunityto utilise the high level of support providedby the Welsh Rugby Union analysisprogramme implemented as part of theWelsh Schools & Colleges U18 League forboth individual and team development.

The analysis allows pupils to previewupcoming opponents and deviseappropriate tactical strategies. Sessions willbe both coach and player led, providingopportunities for pupils to developpresentation skills and other ‘soft skills’.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION Mr Wilkinson [email protected]

School Production is open to pupils acrossall year groups and is specifically aimed atthose who feel they have a flare for singing,drama and dance.

Pupils will be expected to work as part of ateam whilst also having individualresponsibility within that team. Everymember of the production team has acrucial part to play, be it on stage, sound,lighting or set design. The commitment anddedication required is great, but the rewardis even greater.

An additional session for lead characters willalso be available.

SCIENCE STARSCatriona Thomas [email protected]

These sessions are geared towards youngerpupils getting the opportunity to work onnew and exciting science experiments andprojects alongside Sixth Form pupils whoare able to support and guide, inspiringthem to extend their knowledge and developa passion for the subject.

SET PRODUCTIONMr Rodgers [email protected]

Pupils are actively involved in the designand creation of the set and props for SchoolProductions. Pupils will also be invited towork backstage as crew members for theproduction. It is a great opportunity todevelop creativity in a real-life scenario.

SHOOTING Major (Rtd) Hylton Adcroft [email protected]

Target shooting is a well-established sportand the College produces Welsh teamshooters on a regular basis and competeseach year at the Imperial Meeting at theNational Shooting Centre Bisley. Whilst thisactivity is open to all it naturally becomeshighly specialised very quickly.

The activity is run through CCF.

SIXTH SENSE Mr Williams [email protected]

Sixth Sense is an a cappella music groupconsisting of the finest singers in theCollege. This tight knit group of individualsblend harmonies and create sounds thatdazzle the soul and transport listeners to adifferent world.

The group performs an eclectic mix of musicfrom Jessie J to Stevie Wonder, from pop toclassical.

SPORTS LEADERS Miss Flowers [email protected]

Pupils who choose Sports Leaders areintegrated into Prep School sport sessionswhere, with guidance, they lead and coachsessions in the major games.

Through the Sports Leaders programmepupils develop many skills such ascommunication, organisation, problemsolving and teamwork.

This option is available to Year 12 pupilsonly.

RUGBYMr Thomas [email protected]

Llandovery has a strong and proud rugbytradition with the College having producedover 50 Welsh internationals and nine testplaying British Lions.

Rugby is the major sport in the boys’sporting programme and all levels ofexperience are accommodated. The purposeof the intensive and comprehensiveprogramme is to provide unique playingexperiences and maximise the potential ofwell-rounded individuals through corevalues. Training is split across both team andage groups with dedicated teams overseenby the Head of Rugby.

The fixture list is extensive giving playersopportunities to travel around the UK andabroad.

YOUNG ENTERPRISEMr McLernon [email protected]

Young enterprise provides pupils with theopportunities to gain hands-on experienceabout starting and running a business. Fromgenerating ideas to analysing the market,pupils will learn key entrepreneurial skillssuch as teamwork, creativity andperseverance.

Showing a creative eye for a businessopportunity, pupils often develop ideas andtest them successfully on the Collegecommunity.

SQUASH Mr Rees [email protected]

The sport of squash is a fast-paced racquetsport requiring speed, agility, power, controland quick thinking. It is superb formaintaining fitness as the games arecomprised essentially of a series of sprints.

Maximum 12 participants per session.

SUPERVISED STUDY Mr Rodgers [email protected]

This is a daily session in the College Libraryfor individual quiet study. Pupils who areunable to attend another session (perhapsdue to injury) will attend these sessions.

VOLUNTARY SERVICEMr Jones [email protected]

This is a chance for the senior members ofthe College to be of service in the localcommunity of Llandovery. Opportunities towork voluntarily are available in the localcharitable sector, giving a chance to developskills and talents inherent in a goodLlandoverian.

Sixth Form pupils also have the opportunityto visit the elderly, spending time andsharing their experiences in the process.
