Thank You
Through the Italian Greyhound Club Members Newsletter, may I extend a most sincere
thank you to all those Members who offered me assistance with the re homing of Italian
Greyhounds. I could not have fulfilled the role of re-homing co-ordinator for the past 17
years without the generous help of the many Members who kindly gave of their time to
assist the 125 little ones re homed.
Just at a time in my life when I have more time on my hands than ever before to devote to
the role of Co coordinator of Rescues for the Italian Greyhound Rescue Charity, I have had
to make the decision to stand down from the role. It was not an easy decision and I thought
long and hard before standing down from the Charity in May,2013. There were a number of
issues in 2012 which, as a Trustee of the Charity, I could not reconcile.
It seems a long time ago since the first IG was re homed way back in 1997 and every dog
has his/her own story; I remember them all and will treasure the memories of each and
every dog. It has been an honour to have been able to help them when, for a number of
reasons difficulties arose in their lives. I was delighted to meet so many of the dogs and the
turn around of the 22 fostered here with us for varying periods of time was lovely to see. I
also owe a debt of gratitude to the many families who came forward to adopt a rescue.
Over the years little has changed in relation to numbers of IG’s in need of re homing with
an average of six per year being re homed over the last 17 years. What has changed in
recent years is the number of IG/Whippet cross breeds getting into difficulties; they seem
particularly hard to manage when young but thankfully there is always that forever home
waiting for one.
I apologise for not writing to each and every one of you personally but the number of you
who helped me is huge. You know who you are so again a big thank you from me and
from the dogs you helped on their way to start a new life.
Shirley.

Obituary ~ Ellis Hulme
Older Italian Greyhound exhibitors will have been saddened at the passing of Ellis Hulme in May this year at the age of 73 years. One of the Italian Greyhound’s most respected judges; he awarded CC’s to the breed on thirteen occasions with his last IG judging appointment at Midland Counties in 2009.
Always immaculately turned out, decisive yet unhurried, with an unflappable calmness and presence in the ring. Ellis was known for his consideration to exhibitors and his gentleness towards IGs, in
particular young or edgy exhibits . He also had a great ability to find the best dogs. His first CC appointment in the breed was in 1984 at Richmond; where he awarded (Ch)Dairylane Savoir-Faire, bred and shown by Annette Oliver the Dog CC at the tender age of just 7 months. On the same day Monty went on to become the Dog World Puppy Stakes overall winner under a different judge representing the breed in the Puppy Stakes finals, a record that may still stand today.
At Driffield in 1990 he awarded the Bitch CC and BOB, her first, to (Ch)Florita Favolosa, at 11 months of age, owner bred by Helen Lister, Louisa went on to hold the Breed’s CC Record until 2007. At the Club’s Championship Show in 1992, Ellis awarded Best in Show to Ch Philtre Faroah for Jemalsheva, bred by the late Rae Lewis and owned by Helen Davis. Faroah later that year won the Toy Group and Reserve Best in Show at LKA. On his penultimate IG appointment Ellis awarded Ch Berinshill Casual Look Best of Breed, Lola now holds the Breed’s CC Record. Sadly despite Ellis’ keen interest in the breed, he had an amazing recall of all his winners’ pedigrees, and broad depth of knowledge, he never judged IGs at Crufts, probably due to his many other breed commitments. Awarding CC’s to 99 breeds and judging all 7 groups his judging was in great demand, here and abroad.
Ellis’ first introduction to the dog show scene started when he was a teenager, quickly making up his first Champion King Charles, followed by his famous Tongemoor Papillons (17 champions) and Maltese; he took a great interest in all the Toy breeds. Many an ‘old timer’ will tell you of the high standards in presentation and handling that Ellis achieved with his dogs, he had a relentless attention to detail and was keen to encourage others to follow his lead. Judging followed, first at local match meetings in his home town of Bolton, Limit and Open Shows, progressing on to awarding CC’s and judging Best in Show at Crufts in 2000.
His many attributes were sought after by Show Societies, he served his local Tonge Canine Society for over 40 years, he was a founder member in 1971 of the United Kingdom Toy Dog Society, as committee member, Chairman and latterly Patron he served for 42 years. A Kennel Club General Committee member he served on the Judges Sub and Breed Standards committees for 17 years.
I have had the privilege of serving on the United Kingdom Toy Society committee for 12 years, with Ellis in the Chair, essentially a private man with great integrity, coupled with a dry and at times wicked sense of humour. Always on the lookout for young new talent who could be encouraged to bring new ideas forward; encouraging his committee to continuously improve the show dedicated to his first love Toy Dogs.
Few people can have had such an influence on the world of dog showing, as exhibitor, judge, show official and Kennel Club Committee member, he has left an exceptional legacy and his many qualities will be greatly missed.

Congenital Megaoesophagus
This condition is now appearing in the Italian Greyhound and is confirmed in Europe. The condition is non notifiable to the KC/ BVA but has been found in Italian Greyhounds among other breeds.
This extract is taken from a scientific paper article of the same name.
Megaesophagus is a condition in humans, cats and dogs where peristalsis fails to occur properly and the oesophagus is enlarged. Normally, when the animal's oesophagus is functioning properly, it acts as a muscle and pushes the food down the oesophagus into the stomach. When an animal has megaesophagus, the oesophagus stays enlarged and does not push the food down to the stomach. Therefore, the food fails to enter the stomach and often stays in the oesophagus, and is eventually regurgitated, or enters the lungs through breathing, or decays in the oesophagus.
Megaesophagus can also be a symptom of another disease in dogs called myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular disease where the primary symptom is weakness in various body parts of the dog. However, when myasthenia gravis occurs in older dogs it is thought of as an immune-mediated disease. Often when myasthenia gravis is diagnosed in older dogs the first symptom the dog may manifest is megaesophagus.
Myasthenia gravis occurs when acetylcholine receptors (nicotinic acetylcholine receptors or AChRs) fail to function properly. Due to the inability of the nerve receptors to function appropriately, the muscles fail to have a stimulus that causes them to contract.
An important distinction in recognizing megaesophagus is the difference between when a dog regurgitates or vomits. Regurgitating is a common symptom of megaesophagus while vomiting is not necessarily associated with megaesophagus. When a dog regurgitates there is usually not as much effort involved as when a dog vomits. Often when regurgitating, the dog will tip its head down and the liquid and/or food will almost appear to "spill out" of its throat.
One of the primary dangers to a dog with megaesophagus is aspiration pneumonia. Because the food stays lodged in the throat, it can often be inhaled into the lungs causing aspiration pneumonia. According to many specialists, this disorder has a guarded prognosis.
Megaesophagus can be secondary to other diseases such as Myasthenia Gravis, Thyroid, Addison’s and other Neurological disorders.
Symptoms:
Regurgitation of water, mucous or food. (Regurgitation is throwing up without any warning; "vomiting" is associated with retching.)
Loss of appetite or refusal to eat.
Sudden weight loss.
Swallowing difficulty, exaggerated and/or frequent swallowing.
They will also try to clear their throat frequently with a "hacking" sound.
Sour and/or foul smelling breath.
Many canines may be mis-diagnosed with a gastro-intestinal problem.
Aspiration pneumonia is a frequent complication.
It would be hoped that all breeders who might be unfortunate enough to breed a puppy with this condition report this to the KC through their vet and obviously refrain from breeding from the bitch and dog that produced the condition. Also notify the stud dog owner of the occurrence.
It is not know at this stage what the mode of inheritance is of this condition.

There are several differnt designs, from the

I was initially invited 18 months ago to Judge IGs at the Sodra Alvsborg Show at Boras,
Sweden in June this year. It then came about that the IG Club of Sweden had chosen to hold
their Championship Show in conjunction with the Boras Show and it was decided that I
should judge the National Specialty instead. Naturally I was very excited and very much
looking forward to my first overseas appointment.
The weekend did not begin well! I was originally scheduled to fly from Birmingham to
Gothenburg on the Friday afternoon. After a long delay, and boarding the aircraft, before
eventually being returned to the terminal due to technical faults, the flight was eventually
cancelled, 4 hours after it was due to take off. There being no further flights that evening, and
determined I was to get to Sweden for the show, I booked myself on the last remaining seat
on the first flight from Heathrow on the Saturday morning. I drove to Heathrow from
Birmingham that evening and checked into an airport hotel.
The next morning, everything thankfully went like clockwork. No delays and the flight took
off on time at 7.40am. As Judging was due to start at 10am and my flight was not due to land
until 10.35 the exhibitors had been informed of a delay in judging.
Thanks to Henrik Skog who was waiting to drive me from Landvetter Airport to Boras,
giving me a last minute briefing on the Swedish judging system on the way, Judging was not
delayed too much and I was in the ring ready to begin within an hour of my flight touching
down! I was very grateful to all the exhibitors for their understanding, and patience.
The judging system is quite different to that here in the UK. Each dog is judged, given a
written critique and graded ie. Excellent, Very Good, etc before they are placed in their class.
Then all dogs that have been awarded “Certificate Quality” compete in the Best Dog, or Best
Bitch class, being placed 1st – 4
th. The CAC is awarded to the highest placed dog that is
eligible. (ie non-champions). The best dog and best bitch then compete for Best of Breed.
A particularly nice touch was the use of placings boards, in the shape of cut out black IG
silhouettes, with a coloured ribbon tied around the neck to indicate the placing. Maybe an
idea worth exploring by our own club?
The weather could have been better, especially for outdoor judging, with prolonged periods
of heavy rain throughout the day.
The rain made it in many cases difficult to assess movement, and I am sure that had the
weather been better, many exhibits would have moved differently. Because the conditions
were not ideal, I was lenient with some of my gradings. I must say, however, that the IGs
seemed far more amenable to showing in the rain than those here in the UK would have been!
We are lucky that our championship shows usually provide indoor wet weather rings and so
our IGs here are not so accustomed to it.
I was pleased with the overall quality of the entry. Size was generally fairly consistent, with
one or two smaller, or larger specimens. Mostly the larger IGs still retained enough fineness
of bone so as not to appear coarse, however.
There was far less variety of colour than we see in the UK. Mostly Blacks with only a small number of blues and fawns. Obviously, it seemed strange to me for there to be no white markings!
It was a pleasure for me to judge so many promising puppies, who all had good temperaments and did not let the weather spoil their enjoyment. I loved my best puppy Py’s Vierella who I thought to be of tremendous quality with such composed and accurate movement
Best Puppy In Show –Mikael Axenborg’s Pys Vierella (left)
Best Baby Puppy –Rebecka Ahman’s Augustimanes Blondie (right)
Of the Junior classes, I was impressed with the bitches in particular who I thought all excellent quality. I particularly liked the winner of Junior Bitch – Qvickelyckans Vina who became my eventual Best Opposite Sex and CAC. Such a lovely outline and so sound and accurate on the move.
The intermediate classes contained some promising IGs too, with the winner of the bitch class Marikarlos Francesca Corelli going on to win BB-3 and Reserve CAC.
Working classes were interesting and it was noteworthy that some of the soundest moving specimens were in these classes.
The open classes were good for type and quality, and I was delighted to award the winner of Open Dog – Qvickelykans Tor, Best dog -2 and CAC, giving him his Champion Certificate! The winner of Open Bitch – Per-Arne Jonsson’s Mannequins Quella Quarzo did not want to move well at first, obviously objecting to the wet ground but I saw enough of her movement for her to win the class I later awarded her Best head and expression.

1st Open class, CK and Best head - Per-Arne Jonsson’s mannequins Quella Quarzo. (right)
The Champions classes were a treat to judge! I was so impressed with the winners of both classes. The Dog winner – Ch. Klapphallens Valle went on to win Best in Show and I was delighted with his quality, type and correct, accurate and sound movement, in spite of the weather conditions. The Bitch winner and eventual Best Bitch-2; Multi Ch Pys Lyrica was outstanding for profile action, and beautiful outline.

Veterans are always a pleasure to see, and how wonderful to see an exhibit as old as 17 enjoying himself in the ring, and being applauded from the ringside!

After the Show it was back to the very pleasant Scandic Plaza Hotel to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of Bobby Paust and Marie Ljungqvist of the Sodra Alvsborg Kennelklubb, with an excellent dinner, in the company of some lovely people from all over the world. A selection of UK judges were present too, including Andrew Brace and Tom Mather.
The following day I returned to the Boras Show to watch the IG Judging. They were scheduled to have been judged by Gabriel Valdez from Columbia, but he had been unable to make it to the show and they were instead judged by Bjorg Foss from Norway. She enjoyed far better weather for judging the IGs than I had the previous day with high temperatures and glorious sunshine! It was interesting to see how much better many of the IGs that I had judged the previous day moved in the sunshine. My Reserve Best Bitch – Multi Ch Pys Lyrica was Bjorg’s choice for Best bitch and Best of Breed, and evidently we agreed on the choice of best dog – again Ch Klapphallens Valle. She also liked my best bitch, placing it 3rd best bitch behind another Champion bitch that had not been able to be present at the specialty the day before.
After the groups and BIS were completed, It was back to the hotel for the final evening’s dinner before an early flight back to Heathrow the next day.
What a wonderful experience it was, with many new friends made. I hope to go back sometime

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed
are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to
them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over
the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous
reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the
beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but
never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Ch. Hanjy Homecoming to Shirnevina (Winnie) 27th May 1999 to 5th July 2013 (Ch. Shirnevina Wee Willie Winky x Hanjy Hetitia) What a shock it was to have to say goodbye a month ago to our beloved Winnie; just eight months after we said good bye to her litter brother Winston. Winnie was a delight to live with and her special little ways are missed so much by everyone. Although only shown for three years, Winnie enjoyed many successes including being awarded the Bitch CC at Crufts in 2003 and three Best in Show wins at Open Shows before she became a
Champion. Following my husbands stroke 11 years ago, Winnie has spent many hours curled up on Neville’s bed with him – usually in the hope of a tit bit!! She was a wonderful companion to us both for 14 years and it is hard to believe that this much loved little girl has gone from our lives forever, but she will remain in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Run free on the wind “little Win” with the other Shirnevina IG’s who have also crossed rainbow bridge and thank you for so many happy times and memories. Shirley Penrose-Hansell

Water proof bellyband diapering system
These innovative, lightweight diapers provide maximum protection for your male dog who
is incontinent, disabled, not housetrained or for the occassional marker. Excellent for new
puppies who are not 100% reliable indoors
High quality diaper materials, the same used for HUMAN babies, provide the ultimate in
softness, style and performance
Quilted into the center or the band is a double layer of natural anti-bacterial organic bamboo and a layer of
bamboo/rayon microfiber which holds up to 10X its weight in liquid and acts like a sponge to pull moisture away
from your dog for a drier surface
Wide velcro holds them on securely and gentle elastic creates a unique
pouched feature which helps to keep the area drier than flat bands. Much
like a human baby diaper, the pouch allows air pockets to form inside the
band for a healthier environment against your dogs skin.
