nd Society for Contemporary Craft
(SCC) was founded in 1971 by
Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael
in the belief that contemporary
artists had new things to say with
traditional materials, and that they
needed wider opportunities to
exhibit and sell their work. Since
then, SCC has organized more
than 227 exhibitions, created
strong educational and community
outreach programs, established
a satellite gallery and a permanent
collection, and developed
a growing retail business.

a word from
our director
Dear Friends,
We recently completed the first year of our new strategic plan, which focuses on improving SCC’s organizational “business model” to ensure long-term financial sustainability. In particular, we are strengthening our earned revenue capabilities in two core areas—our Studio and our Store—as we try to streamline operations and enhance customer service.
A big step in that direction took place last January when we put our Studio class registration on-line. With this process automated, you can register for a class anytime day or night, receive automatic updates on class materials and your course’s status, and learn much more about your instructor’s background than we could include in our brochure as well as see samples of their work. You can now search on-line for all of our course offerings, rather than having to download the PDF of the entire brochure to search manually. The on-line system also allows us to offer courses added to the schedule after the brochure has gone to print.
With a small staff, automating the registration process has made a big impact, enabling Education Director Sherrard Bostwick to focus more of her energy and expertise on creating a vibrant and creative range of classes.
If you haven’t yet accessed our on-line site, I encourage you to do so by visiting our Web site, www.contemporarycraft.org. If you’ve used the on-line service, and have any feedback to pass along to us to help us continue to improve it, please let us know with an e-mail to [email protected] or call to 412.261.7003, x25. We’d love to hear from you.
All best wishes for a creative and art-filled fall season,
Janet McCallExecutive [email protected]

registration deadline: November 2
H instructor: Betty Vera, Bridge 12 exhibition & visiting artist from Woodstock, NY
Co-sponsored by SCC and the Fiberarts
Guild of Pittsburgh, this workshop answers
the question, “What can a line do?”. Betty

complex woven imagery, also makes three-
dimensional artwork in which she allows the
behavior of her materials to play a role in
determining form. Vera will emphasize freedom
and spontaneity of creative play in students’
use of a variety of materials. The class will
look at examples of fiber sculpture, and then
explore some simple strategies for
constructing lightweight forms to exploit the
expressive potential of line and its dynamic
relationship with space. Each student will
design and make a small, sculptural object.

to enjoy the workshop, which welcomes
participants at all levels of experience.

H instructor: Kevin Snipes, Bridge 12 exhibition & visiting artist from Chicago, IL
Kevin Snipes’ atypical pottery is covered with
quirky, figurative drawings influenced by
traditional and non-traditional art forms,
including street art, architecture, contemporary
painting, art history, children’s drawings and a
fascination with duality. His playfully profound
images represent what is ironically bound
together intrinsically by opposition and
otherness. Snipes’ drawings encourage the
viewer to engage in an intimate investigation
with his ceramic artworks, in order to
encounter the concepts of otherness and
ambiguity of difference revealed within them.
For this program, Snipes will give a visual
presentation that discusses how he is
exploring new understandings of Blackness
in his work. Afterwards, community members
will share their own personal stories and relate
these to issues presented in the artwork. This
open dialogue is part of SCC’s ongoing Faces

Childhood Memories of an Adult World [MaM020213]date & time: SaturdayFebruary 2, 20135—6:30 pm
registration deadline: January 18
instructor: Yoko Sekino-Bové, SCC Store artist
Join ceramist Yoko Sekino-Bové, a 2011
finalist for the Niche Award, for an evening
exploring her porcelain artworks that mix and
match cultural styles and traditional symbols
to create elegant satires. Her ‘Hanafuda Sake
Drinking Game Sets’ reflect a childhood tea
party perspective of the darker adult world of
drinking and gambling. Hanafuda translates as
‘flower cards’ and are colorful playing cards
of Japanese origin. Once a refined game for
nobility, Hanafuda became popular for
gambling following the introduction of
Portuguese missionaries. In 1633, this caused
Japan to ban card playing and close off
contact with the West. Clashes of East and
West, of refined and sorted, and of traditional
versus satiric, fill the imagery and forms of
Sekino-Bové’s art. She believes games are
ritualized forms of play with complex rules and
props, which provide safe spaces to test
boundaries and explore the more private
aspects of personality.

Brigitte Martin will present a gallery talk with
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial cartoonist
Rob Rogers, exploring the intersection of
contemporary craft with humor and the
question, “What do we laugh at?”. In addition,
Martin will sign purchased copies of her new
book, also titled Humor in Craft, published
by Schiffer Publishing Ltd. and available in
SCC’s Store for $50. The hardcover, full-color,
coffee-table book documents 235 makers
worldwide. This program is co-sponsored with
the ToonSeum, which promotes a deeper
appreciation of cartoonists and their art. There
is a $5 suggested donation at the door.
