Intro to MonotypeTue & Thu, Sep 2 & 4, 6-8 pm

Monoprints are unique prints. This painterly style of printmaking has an inherent “surprise” for the artist when pulling the print.Learn methods for applying ink to plexiglass using brayers and brushes, create stencils with contact paper, and layer materials directly on the plate to create printed textures. Instructor: Lynn Rothan$56 / $45 Artist Member

HERE’S A TIP>

Get comfortable working in monotype for the Monoprinting the Figure workshop with Visiting Artist Ben Rosenberg (this page).

Blind EmbossingSat, Sep 6, 9-1 pm

Blind embossing is achieved by printing with stiff pressure—and without ink—so the embossment becomes the design. Experiment with blind embossing using an assortment of pre-existing collagraph, relief, and intaglio plates, and test embossing on a variety of papers. Use blind embossment with mixed-media to create interesting visual surfaces. Participants will have time to create their own simple linocut or collagraph plate to emboss

Monoprinting the FigureWed & Thu, Sep 10-11, 5:30-9:30 pm

Explore figure drawing through printmaking in this workshop with visiting artist Ben Rosenberg. Students work from live models each evening and explore various ways to capture the figure in monotype and monoprint. Work from a fully-inked plate using the reductive method, paint into the plate, or create spontaneous sketches using the trace monotype technique. Develop foreground and background and build layers of color and texture with successive runs through the press.

Recommended for artists with figure drawing experience. Monotype experience is helpful. Early registration is strongly recommended.

Color Reduction LinocutTue & Thu, Dec 2 & 4, 6-9 pm

A favorite print technique of Picasso, a reduction linocut is a print in which one linoleum block is used for all colors—each in succession. The block is “reduced” or cut after each printing, altering the image and defining the print with successive, overprinted colors. Design, carve, and print a three-color reduction linocut. This class includes demonstrations and discussions of relief carving, the reduction process, printing, registration, and paper selection.

Explore the graphic and artistic potential of letterpress with photopolymer plates. Called

“digital letterpress,” this process allows artists to convert vectored art and type into relief plates for

anyone with a familiarity and access to design software capable

of creating a vector file, such as Adobe Illustrator, or layout

software like InDesign. Learn how to process a plate and print a one or two-color print. As time allows,

LETTERPRESS

Visiting ArtistClare Carpenter

Clare is a graduate of Oregon College of Art and Craft. She runs her own

letterpress studio in Portland, Tiger Food Press.

Learning letterpress takes time. Antique presses and antique type

require extra care and attention, so there’s a lot to learn about proper

handling of studio equipment before we allow artists to work

independently in the letterpress studio. If you’re keen to learn

letterpress, plan on taking our fall Intro to Letterpress and digital

letterpress class (Letterpress for Graphic Designers), and look for

more sequential offerings next year to hone your skills. We also encourage you to sign up for our monthly Letterpress Open Studio (see details below) to gain more

experience.

Letterpress Open StudioStarting in October:

Second Sunday, Noon-4 pm

A6 staff oversee this open studio time, so you can build letterpress

skills by assisting on studio projects or working on your own

projects. Prerequisite: Intro to Letterpress or Letterpress for

Graphic Designers.$20, free for Artist Members

LEPORELLO PREVIEW: WORKING QUESTIONS OCT. 14 >

Linda Piacentini-Yaple discusses salvaging “bad” prints into structural Leporello books. See page 2.

BOOKARTS

Artist’s Leporello BookSat & Sun, Nov 1 & 2, 9-Noon

Leporello books are constructed to create an accordion fold, which enables the book to stand upright and extend outward—and allows the viewer to examine the front and back of the book. These structural books are ideal for displaying a progression of images, a narrative, or an evolution of thinking. Begin by mapping out a visual plan and artistic strategy for a leporello book. Next, learn how to selectively crop sections of paintings, collage, drawings, and original prints (including monoprints, letterpress, intaglio prints...even “failed” prints!) to create strong visuals and a sense of flow. A rewarding exercise for artists of all levels and mediums, this workshop helps you translate two-dimensional art into a compelling three-dimensional work.
