AMERICAN MONUMENTS Series of 3 classes $99 FA05

This lecture series will illustrate three historically significant structures with unique architectural styles and artistic programs that certainly deserve to be called American monuments.Michael Farrell Ph.D.

THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS On the exterior, the Beaux Arts-style Library of Congress i s a paraphrase of the Paris Opera House. The interior d e c o r a t i o n , however, reveals a complex system

of symbolism relating to the importance of the liberal arts as part of the American democratic tradition.WED 11/4 7:00-9:00pm $36 (Series $99) FA06

ROCKEFELLER CENTER While Art Deco was born in France, Rockefeller Center may be the greatest example of it as a large, unified urban plan. Each building and its ornamentation will be examined as both a unique structure fitting its purpose and use and also as a part of the overall program that

makes up the entire complex of buildings.WED 11/11 7:00-9:00pm $36 (Series $99) FA07

THE NATIONAL CATHEDRAL W a s h i n g t o n ’ s National Cathedral i s an Amer ican version of a Gothic English cathedral. More importantly, however, is how in its sculpture, painting, mosaic and stained glass it functions as

an embodiment of the biblical quotation, “...My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”WED 11/18 7:00-9:00pm $36 (Series $99) FA08

THE REGENCY & GEORGE IV Series of 3 classes $99 FA01

The year 2014 marked the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the Hanoverians to the English throne. This series will discuss the regency and reign of George IV and the architecture, painting and society of the era.Michael Farrell Ph.D.

Session One 9:30-10:45am ~ Juli Jeffery‘Freeing Your Hips, Freeing Your Soul’ Walking, standing, sitting – these are just some of the everyday things we do that require mobility, stability and freedom in the hips. In this session, Juli Jeffery offers a series of yoga asanas that will liberate the hips – and bring relief to unexpected parts of the body. A YAGD member since 2006, Juli received her 500-hour advanced teacher certification in 2014 and teaches mainly in the Livonia area.

Session Two 11:00am-12:15pm ~ Katherine Schaefer‘Soma Yoga: Awareness through Movement’‘Soma’ is the Greek word for body. Soma Yoga is an invitation to experience the body’s innate intelligence through awareness and movement. From feet to head, we will explore yoga poses, breath and awareness exercises to find ease of movement and peace of mind. YAGD member Katherine Schaefer is a 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist and Licensed Massage Therapist.

Lunch break 12:15-1:25pm: Bring/get your own lunch

Session Three 1:30-2:45pm ~ Richard Smith‘Is the Problem the Body? Or the Mind?’ Stiff. Inflexible. Troublesome. All three words can apply equally to the body and to the mind. To free the body, there are asanas. To free the mind, there is meditation. This session will focus on the practical, effective and helpful mindfulness techniques that YAGD member Richard Smith has been practicing at retreat centers and Buddhist monasteries around the world for more than 25 years.

Session Four 3:00-4:15pm ~ Chris Briney‘The Mystical Gateway of Alignment’ Students (and even teachers) of yoga often mistake the purpose and process of aligning yoga postures as being solely body-based and thus not “spiritual” or “yogic.” YAGD member Chris Briney, a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and Director of Living Tradition Yoga in Royal Oak, will dispel this illusion and reveal the profound spiritual wonders hidden in even the most ‘common’ yoga postures.

Session Five 4:30-5:00pm ~ Karen Lutz ‘Being and Not Doing’To complete the day and help your body absorb and benefit from your practice, Karen Lutz will lead a deeply relaxing guided Savasana meditation, focusing on the breath as it moves through the body. The founder of Changing Poses, Karen is a member of YAGD and has been teaching in the Oakland County area for the past eight years.

Cost: $65 for complete day; $37 for morning or afternoon session.

Check-in: 8:45-9:15am. Bring your yoga mat and a blanket.

This fun, interactive and age appropriate workshop teaches essential, lifesaving information about the threats facing our children, strategies for prevention and real world techniques designed to reduce their risk of abductions, assaults and other forms of violence.
