WELCOME TO THE CHURCH

We are so glad that you’ve decided to spend this time with us today. All of us were new-comers at one time and we understand how

being here for the first time can be somewhat daunting. We didn’t know our way around, we weren’t familiar with the procedures, and we didn’t know all the songs either! We would like to lessen that feeling for you and we invite you to participate at whatever level you are comfortable

with.

Please visit our Welcome Centre located just off the

main lobby where you can reflect and connect. As a first time newcomer we invite you to enjoy a free bev-erage and snack, connect with church leadership, and find out more about our Church. You will also receive a free gift to celebrate your arrival at Church on the

Queensway.

A Guest Services counter located in the main lobby is staffed by knowledgeable people. Please feel free to drop by with any questions you may have and pick up more information about our Church.

TEAM IS VITAL

Rich Bodnar

During our lives we take any number of things for granted. We rarely give a thought to where our

water is purified, or how our electricity is generated… yet when one reflects for a moment about these vital utili-ties, the realization comes that much planning, time and effort has gone into making these services available to each of us.

Church on the Queensway is similar, although you

don’t receive a bill at the end of the month! There is much planning, time, effort and activity on the go any given week of the year…. church services, small groups, theatrical presentations, and ministries to all ages….these all happen in the four walls of the church and beyond.

God uses volunteers as His hands extended because

they are willing to give of their time to serve kingdom purposes and see His kingdom grow. Our volunteers work in front of and behind the scenes keeping the landscaping nice, changing diapers, teaching our chil-dren, youth and young adults, feeding the less fortu-nate, leading worship, bringing the Bible to life on stage, answering phones, praying, helping and mentoring… this list is by no means exhaustive.

Volunteers are needed in every area on an ongoing basis. Without volunteers ministry here at Church on the Queensway would STOP!

Serving and volunteering is also a command from

God. His Word says it this way:

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” ~ 1 Peter 4:10

For those of you who serve already, keep going! God

bless you! For those who haven’t volunteered before, or haven’t for a very long time, would you consider get-ting involved? Volunteers really do bring things to life around a church. Take a moment, reflect, and ask God what you can do to help keep this vital ministry moving forward!

In the 1970 movie “Love Story,” Ryan O’Neil coined the phrase that has become famous. “Love means

never having to say you’re sorry.” On first glance I think it seems to make some sense but recently I have been struck by how misleading this phrase truly is. In fact, I would suggest the opposite is true. People that love each other will always say “I’m sorry,” in a variety of ways.

Why does our human nature find it so hard when we know, deep down inside, that an apology

is the right thing to do? My theological perspective guides me to conclude that saying “I’m sorry” is hard because it concedes wrong-doing, and there are few things more difficult than admitting that my words or actions hurt another person. Humans don’t always feel comfortable saying “I’m sorry” because it positions one into either owing an apology, punishment, or res-titution.

I have recently been reading “The Five Languages of an Apology” by Gary Chapman which has highlighted this truth. After an offense, an apology is powerful and transformational, but it must also be offered in a way that is meaningful to the person that was hurt. The last part is critical to understand because not all apologies

THE POWER OF I’M SORRY

Kevin-Joel Coupland

are equal and what one person will accept, another per-son may consider insincere. Chapman proposes five dis-tinct types of apologies. The first is the use of a clear “I’m sorry” statement. The second type includes an expres-sion of regret while the third acknowledges that expec-tations of words or actions was somehow violated. The fourth type of apology will offer an empathy statement to acknowledge how their words or actions have effected the offended. The last type of apology will include seek-ing forgiveness for the offense.

The power of a meaningful apology in undeniable and transformational. After the 1994 genocide, the Rwandese people stood at a fork in the road and they chose to enter the path of forgiveness after communities apologized to each other, and now the nation

continues to heal. This path is often difficult, since it may feel like the offender is not bearing the full weight of the offense. This is an understandable response, however when I consider that Christ will forgive us for every sin, as long as we provide a meaningful apology to Him, I won-der how I could not forgive others.

In close relationships, the stakes are high. With a part-ner or children, a meaningful apology is a blessing that brings peace, health and can also break down walls that have separated people for far too long. Followers of Christ would do well to adopt an attitude of apology, and seek to learn the language of those closest to them. In this way, the stage is set for forgiveness and more mean-ingful relationships.

I can personally think of many examples of unforgiven offenses that could have easily been cut short if the five apology languages were to have been employed, and probably, you can too. One of the most important ques-tions remaining then is what is stopping you from using an apology to restore your damaged relationships?

Volunteering has always been a part of my life. When I was young, my father told me, “There is nothing

more important than making others feel loved - nothing!” Being raised by a single father, I took everything he said to heart and so always strived to help others.

I moved to South Etobicoke a couple of years ago and looked for a place in my community that could use a help-ing hand. I found information online about The Haven and decided to check it out. I met Bev and told her that I was willing to help between my work obligations, and she said that they could really use a strong arm to do some heavy lifting in the food bank.

Since that day, I have consistently been at The Haven at least once a week. Even though I have done a lot of volun-teer work, my work at the Haven has easily been the best volunteer experience I’ve ever had. From the very begin-ning, the staff and volunteers showed me love.

The most accurate word to describe my volunteer friends at the Haven is ‘saints’. It’s hard work in the food bank, and a lot of the volunteers are seniors who have been helping for years, but they sacrificially come ev-ery week, so that others who are less fortunate will have food to eat for the next week.

There are people all over this city who have dedi-cated their lives to service. There are many causes that don’t get media attention, helping people who thought they were forgotten. There is so much good around us, and being at the Haven has reinforced that for me.

Everything done at the Haven is done with love and grace. It’s inspiring and it has changed my life. We are a family at the Haven, and I will do anything for my family. We share so many laughs together, and we also share tears. I look forward to many more great times with my Haven family as we work together to help those in need!

Take a moment and imagine what the service would be like if all the babies, kids and Tweens were in

it. It would be a little more than different, wouldn’t it? It might be loud, there might be questions from the little ones and they might even be bored. That’s why we have separate services uniquely designed for each age group, because the brain of an adult is different from a six-year-old’s, slightly.

But hold on, if you and I are in the service, who is look-ing after the couple hundred people under the age of 13? Well they are Volunteers, one word that means a lot. Let’s break it down to three words: time, care and concern. These Volunteers give a piece of their time, care and con-cern to these sometimes slobbery and loud individuals. But they’re not getting paid and they barely get a pat on the back! So if it’s not about getting paid, what is it about? If it’s not about constant appreciation, why do it?

Here are just a few reasons:

Why serve the babies? Because they need to know that church is a safe place where they know they will be held, played with and loved while their parents refuel.

Why serve as a Superbuddy? Because every child, re-gardless of their challenges, can experience God’s pres-ence and call Him Lord.

A COMMUNITY WORTH INVESTING IN

Alysha Read

Why serve in Tweens? Because every Tween needs guidance in how to grow in their faith, have fun and how to make lasting friendships.

Why Teenagers? Because being an adolescent is an emotional rollercoaster but a relationship with God is real and God walks with us through our highs and lows.

Why volunteer? Volunteer because we are part of a community, within our four walls and outside it. Com-munity requires participation. Even if you can’t give of your time, when you see a volunteer who is, give them a high-five, a smile or a hug. Everyone has their own lives outside of serving but these amazing individu-als have taken the time to serve. It’s a sacrifice but our community is worth investing in.

A LETTER FROM THE SENIOR PASTOR

PASTOR BILLY RICHARDS

The Church is made up of many people working together in

order to help draw people close to Jesus.

Dear Fellow Ministers of Jesus at Church on the Queensway:

I want to personally thank you so very much for the hours of min-istry, sacrifice and love you show to people through the ministry you have in the Holy Spirit. Your Volunteer ministry is reaching people for Christ. The Church is made up of many people working together in order to help draw people close to Jesus. Hundreds of people Volunteer, which is one of the greatest factors in helping us to grow, meet needs, and see the blessing of God the Father on the Church.

So let’s talk! Volunteer ministry is totally Biblical. In Ephesian 4

the Apostle Paul tells the Pastors to equip the Saints for service. The translation is simply, “Pastors teach and help the Believers to minister to people through the Holy Spirit.” When you and everyone else work together it is like a symphony orchestra making phenom-enal music. Each instrument plays their part, all the instruments blending together to create beautiful music. When one instrument goes off its own way, there is no harmony and the music sounds wrong.

Over the last ten years we have seen God create a magnificient Volunteer ministry team which is reaching thousands of people every week. Examples of this are:

1. Children’s Ministry is reaching 300 to 400 kids per week

2. Haven on the Queensway is helping over 500 people per week

3. The Church’s Productions Team reaches thousands with their productions

These few examples show that Volunteer ministry is touching lives.

P.S.

Your ministry as a Volunteer is Biblical, really needed and will bring eternal blessing to others and you.

Thanks. Again, I appreciate your sacrifice, dedication and ministry. We could not do it without so many of you Volunteering.

For those of you who haven’t started to minister... WE WILL HELP YOU GET STARTED.

BEHIND THE STAGE

It takes an incredible amount of work to stage one of our theatrical productions. During Easter week-

end alone almost 300 volunteers work tirelessly be-hind the scenes to ensure over 15,000 guests expe-rience the power of The Toronto Passion Play. And while we witness the tremendous way God uses the play when hundreds of people flood the aisles during the altar call, very few see the incredible way God’s Spirit moves behind the scenes.

Backstage in the Chapel the cast waits with eager anticipation to hear the Stage Manager’s call to start the play. It is during this time when something tru-ly miraculous occurs. A group of people who were practically strangers a few months earlier can be seen laughing together, hugging, singing and praying for

one another. This amazing group has spent any-where from 30-70 hours in rehearsal time together over the previous 3 months. In this very short time they have formed friendships that will last a lifetime.

These volunteers are not just performing a play about Jesus, they have experienced Jesus in and through each other. They have known His Joy when a moment in rehearsal has caused the entire cast to roar with laughter. They have been His comforting embrace when a member of our team has suffered hardship. This weekend they are more than actors, stagehands, costume makers, sound and lighting technicians or hair and makeup team members. Behind the stage they have become a family.

Passion playPassion playPassion playThis year marks the 24th year of the Toronto Passion Play! For over two decades the Toronto Passion Play has faithfully depicted what occurred nearly two millennia ago; the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Every year we are drawn back to this story because it never ceases to amaze and inspire us. Who would have thought that a humble Jewish Rabbi who was put to death so long ago would still be changing lives today? Who can fathom how many countless millions have experienced the cleansing forgiveness of His blood or the mighty power of His resurrection? We come back to the gospel story time and time again because we know that it was only the beginning. The story of Jesus continues today. He continues to forgive, heal, restore, deliver and make new any heart that is thirsty for these things. He is risen indeed! He is still shouting: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

~ John 7:37-38
