UK: 'Our time' Makes Case For Living
Wage
Leading event professionals have begun paving the
way towards introducing the living wage across the
industry, saying it’s “our time” to make it work.
Representatives from agencies, corporates, venues,
associations, along with Living Wage Foundation
acting director Sarah Vero, met on Friday to
discuss the benefits of the living wage and how to
urge event buyers to put it on their agenda.
As much as 70 percent of London-based employees in the hospitality industry are paid
below the living wage, while the UK-wide figure is 65 per cent. M&IT has teamed up
with Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO) to launch
the Living Wage for Live Events campaign and started a petition.
“This is really about us trying to seize the moment and also agree on a pathway on
what it is we should be aiming to achieve,” M&IT managing editor Martin Lewis said
during the debate.
“It’s obvious it’s our time. The political arena is recognising there’s a link between living
wage and business. We’re not necessarily saying it’s absolutely feasible in every area
of the hospitality industry, but it’s obvious a lot more can be done.”
Robin Parker, general manager at Church House Conference Centre, where the
debate took place, said there had been clear benefits from paying the living wage.
“Our team like working at Church House. How can you expect anyone to work on the
living wage on £6.75?” he said.
Hannah Richardson, from KPMG, said the company was passionate about
implementing the living wage: “The ethical motivation for it is so important and I can’t
move away from that. There might be corporates who say they do things but it really
breeds in our organisation.”
Sundial Group CEO Tim Chudley, whose venue Barnett Hill became one of the first
accredited Living Wage employers, said there was work to be done to urge more
corporates to adopt a similar view.
“It’s been quite disappointing by corporate procurement when it comes to choosing
venues. Many of the people I’ve spoken to say they’re not interested,” he said.
“They might not be making it a pre-requisite because there are not enough suppliers.”
British Hospitality Association’s Martin Couchman said feedback from the majority
of members was that they couldn’t afford the living wage.
“They know you’re less likely to have staff turnover if you pay the living wage, but it’s the
question of what’s affordable. We’re not saying there will be job losses, it will be more
cutting hours; it will be the ability to create jobs,” he said.
The group is working to hold a launch event in the coming months. Register your

The first Living Wage for Live Events campaign debate is set to take
place featuring some of the UK meetings industry’s key figures.
The debate at Church House Conference Centre on Friday 16 October
will feature meeting and events professionals from firms including TFI
Group, Grass Roots, drp, KPMG, Innovision, MIA and BHA.
M&IT and the Association of British Professional Conference
Organisers (ABPCO) teamed up to launch the campaign this year, and
are encouraging event buyers to put the Living Wage at the top of their
agenda.
The debate, moderated by M&IT managing editor Martin Lewis, will
consider the campaign’s aim to ensure frontline staff in hospitality,
meeting and event venues are paid the Living Wage.
The discussions will be from 12 noon- 2pm, with registration from
11.45am, and Church House will be providing a working lunch at the
event.
Anyone with strong views on the subject or who would like to take part
or attend the debate should email Heather Lishman for more
information.
To follow the debate online, follow the @ABPCO and @meetpie
Twitter feeds and the event hashtag #LivingWage4Events. You can
pledge your support by signing the petition at
www.livingwageforevents.com.
ABPCO association director Heather Lishman said: “It is something we
are passionate about and we want the campaign to address questions
on behalf of event professionals everywhere.
"At present, the hotel and hospitality sectors are rated as some of the
worst offenders when it comes to not paying their frontline employees
the living wage. The Centre for Research in Social Policy found that 90
per cent of workers in the hospitality sector are paid under the living
wage and, whilst it is not enforceable, people are now starting to
question whether this is morally right.
“The positive news is that some companies are beginning to react and
make a change. One of the first conference venues to be accredited
was Sundial Group’s Barnett Hill and the campaign is now urging event
buyers to put the Living Wage at the top of their agenda when it comes
to selecting a venue.
“Support is growing and this is superb news but we are not so blind
that we accept there will not be challenges to face when adopting the
Living Wage and this is why a debate has been organised. It is
important that the campaign is debated from all angles so it ultimately
ensures that what is best for the industry is recognised and
implemented.”
The inaugural debate is also being held as part of the National Events
Month campaign, of which ABPCO is an active supporter.
Those attending the debate include:
- Robin Parker – Church House Conference Centre
- Des Mclaughlin, Grass Roots Meetings & Events
- Hannah Richardson – KPMG London
- Laura Brookes – KPMG London
- Tim Chudley – Sundial Group
- Claudia Douglass – Innovision
- Rachael Betts – on behalf of the MIA
- Dale Parmenter - DRP Group
- Sarah Vero - Living Wage Foundation
- Martin Couchman - BHA

Pictured: Chudley and staff at Barnett Hill
Sundial Group MD Tim Chudley has been shortlisted in the leadership
category of the Living Wage Champion Awards 2015.
And Sundial Group’s Surrey venue Barnett Hill has been listed as an
Employer Champion.
The recognition comes ahead of the first Living Wage for Live Events
campaign debate on Friday 16 October at Church House Conference
Centre, where a panel - including Chudley - will look at the industry's
position when it comes to paying the living wage.
The Living Wage Champion Awards celebrate individuals and
organisations that have made a real difference to their industry or their
community by supporting the Living Wage.
The Awards are open to accredited Living Wage Employers,
Recognised Service Providers and individuals who have made an
outstanding contribution to the campaign.
Chudley said: "I feel honoured as an individual and as someone that
feels passionately about the issue, but I'm also pleased on behalf of
the hospitality industry, as we've been dragging our heels.
“The UK hospitality industry suffers from low pay. It isn’t universal and
we shouldn't be making excuses for it. It's time that people taking a
stance on this should be demanding change."
Sundial Group is the only employer from the meetings and events
sector to have been nominated in the awards.
The winners will be announced as part of Living Wage Week 2015 in
November. The awards are judged by an independent panel of
community leaders from the Living Wage campaign.

Home News Arenas and Conference Centres Church House AV launches in-house video production service
Category: Arenas and Conference Centres Created on Tuesday, 27 October 2015 14:00
Following recent investments in broadcasting and web streaming equipment, Church House Conference Centre’s AV
team has introduced a full in-house video production service.
The new service allows the venue to produce professional videos, providing clients with a one-stop shop for all their
event AV requirements, as well as generate creative opportunities for its marketing department.
In the past two years Church House has invested more than £120,000 in state-of-the-art video equipment including a vision
mixer, HD cameras, lighting and infrastructure. In order to support these investments Church House has also invested in
developing its teams experience in broadcast technology, providing training for all AV technicians in the Editing Suite on
programmes such as Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effect so they can produce professional videos in-house.
Ian Locke, Church House Conference Centre’s AV Manager, says: “We are thrilled to officially introduce this service at Church House and are really excited about the new
opportunities that it will open. For our clients this is a chance to benefit from some cutting edge technology and obtain professional videos, whilst simplifying the production
process by working with a team who already knows and understands their event.
“From an internal point of view it will also enhance our marketing efforts by offering more possibilities in-house, such as being able to create content for our new YouTube
channel. Our AV team is full of young and talented people and this is a great way for them to showcase their broad technical skills but also their creative potential.”
The first client to utilise the new service was international AV association InfoComm, who hosted their Live Hands-On Day in September. Christopher Lavelle, Regional
Director, UK and Ireland InfoComm International, commented: “We were extremely pleased with the outcome from the Video Production Team at Church House Conference
Centre. The video pieces created were catching, edgy and clearly well thought out in post-production. On the day the video crew were polite and courteous, invisible when
not needed while capturing the day but available when required.”

Two political heavyweights took to the stage at Church House Conference Centre this week for a debate on The Art of Political Power.
The sold-out event was organised by Intelligence Squared, the world’s leading forum for live debate. It saw Robert Caro — often described as America’s
greatest political biographer — quizzed on the nature of political power by William Hague, the former foreign secretary and former leader of the Conservative
party.
Caro has twice won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, for his studies of the lives of Robert Moses and Lyndon B Johnson, and in 2010 he received the National Humanities
Medal from President Barack Obama.
Church House Conference Centre is no stranger to political debate having been used by the two Houses of Parliament during World War II with many historic speeches
taking place within the building, including the announcement by Winston Churchill of the sinking of the battleship Bismarck. The Westminster venue has continued its political
links hosting many government meetings over the years.
Intelligence Squared said: “Church House was an excellent venue for our evening with Robert Caro and William Hague, with its central, Westminster location and its
atmospheric, historic auditorium.”
Church House Conference Centre’s General Manager Robin Parker commented: “To have one of the greatest political writers come to Church House in this superb event
organised by Intelligence Squared and to see him questioned about his career and political knowledge was a great honour. It is just one of the many high-calibre political
events we have hosted this year. These events are of immense interest to members of the public and it was great to see yet another high-profile speaker talk in front of a
sold-out audience.”
Church House Conference Centre is situated in the heart of Westminster and is one of London’s most versatile event venues, accommodating between 2 and 664 guests.
