Sermon Notes: “BE MERCIFUL” “Blessed are the Merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.” Matthew 5:7”
Introduction.
1. The story of Mother Teresa and her ministry of mercy in India.
2. This nun lived out the mercy and grace of her Lord Jesus Christ.
1. The Biblical meaning of mercy.
Mercy is compassion and pity. They are closely related. Compassion moves
toward one in need and distress.
Mercy and compassion denotes care, concern, and empathetic for
another person
The aspect of God’s love that causes Him to help the miserable, just as
grace is the aspect of His love that moves Him to forgive the guilty.
Forbearance from inflicting punishment upon an adversary or a law breaker.
God shows mercy by actively helping those who are miserable due to
circumstance beyond their control. (The Dump Children in Honduras.)
2. Jesus was a man of mercy.
He was merciful to the two blind men in Matthew 9:27-31.
He was merciful to the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19.
There is the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-27.
The acts of healing in the Gospels grow out of his attitude of compassion
and mercy (James 1:27).
God is the father of mercies (II Cor. 1:3)
3. We are to be merciful. “Be merciful, just as your father is merciful.” (Ephesians 2:45)
Kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
It is God’s mercy that we are saved (Ephesians 2:4; Titus 3:5).
What are the illustrations of being merciful in your life?
Conclusion
Look at the Apostle Paul’s attitude toward God’s mercy.
Because of your compassion who are you showing mercy to?
New Ministries for 2018
Financial Counseling:
Mt. Pleasant Church now offers Financial Counseling for members and friends of the
congregation who are facing financial challenges. Our financial counselors work under the
Finance Commission at the church. Our seven counselors are highly qualified individuals who
will meet with people who are overwhelmed with financial issues. The church has outstanding
resources to help people with financial challenges. This is a confidential ministry & only the
counselors will know about the relationship. You may call Pastor Ray, Pastor Garry,
or John Flood to begin this counseling.
Iron Men: The Mt. Pleasant Church is launching a men’s ministry in February. The ministry is called “Iron Men.” “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 We are now organizing 12 groups who will be led by co-chairpersons (24 men). The groups will meet on the first Saturday of the month and will meet for 90 minutes (breakfast, “Man in the Mirror,” and prayer). “Man in the Mirror” is a great book and it will take us 24 months to cover the chapters. We are praying for 120 men who will get connected through life groups for the glory of God. You will never be the same. On the 3rd Saturday of the month, all of the men are invited to the Church fellowship center for breakfast. Pastor Seilhamer will lead the entire group in a study of “Uncommon Men” by Tony Dungy, former World Champions of the Indianapolis Colts. If you are not contacted by one of our
co-chairmen, please call the pastor and he will assign you to one of our life groups.
