Waken from your sleep and arise, shepherds. This day is your Saviour born, shepherds. Born is your Lord in Bethlehem, In a lowly stable ye shall find him.

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Rise up now, ye shepherds, leave your sheepfolds. Why! Heard you not the good news angels have told? No! This day ye your Lord shall behold,

Oh! Then 'tis true, Our Lord is here! Come with me and worship our Lord. But we know not Master where we shall go?

Page 4: Christmas Vespers - CORE

That we must press on, is all that we know. Angel songs the tiding proclaim Born our Lord in Bethlehem. Oh delay no longer, haste on our road, With our humble gifts an ass let us load. But what are the gifts we could bring, Meet for Him our Heavenly King? Just a little milk my off'ring shall be. Cheese and bread will be the present from me. Mine a little baby lamb will be. Let us then go onward, no more delay. Bethlehem we'll reach ere dawning of day.

Gloria! See now, over yonder shines a great light! 'Tis a sign from Heaven leading us right. Look now, brother, can He be there? Are we sure, that He will be there? He is there for certain, Him have I seen When I reached the stable there I looked in. Yea, I saw Him with my own eyes. There in a manger sleeping He lies. Hail to Thee, 0 Jesus, Thou art our King. To Thy lowly crib our homage we bring. Thou our help and guardian wilt be. Over Death we triumph through Thee!

Gloria!

Angelus (The Angel) (sung in Latin) The Angelus (The Angel) is a short devotional Catholic prayer celebrating the mystery of the Incarnation. While the text is the same as the Ave M~ria above, the Angelus takes its name from its two introductory lines:

The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, And she conceived of the Holy Ghost.

In the Catholic rite, the Angelus is often accompanied by the sound of a bell, which is reflected in Steven Sametz' s setting of the text.

Lehigh is proud of its long tradition of choral singing. In its 130-year history, there have only been five Directors of Choral Activities. The singing of Praetorius' s "Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming" dates back 50 years, when the Glee Club sang it annually under the direction of Robert ("Boss") Cutler. Since coming to Lehigh, Steven Sametz has built on this tradition, offering a newly arranged version of this Lehigh classic each year as a present to both the singers of Lehigh University Choral Arts and to our friends and families who come to hear and support us.

Lo How A Rose

Lo, how a rose e'er blooming, From tender stem hath sprung! From Jesse's lineage coming, As men of old have sung. It came, a floweret bright, Amid the cold of winter When half spent was the night

Isaiah 'twas foretold it, The Rose I have in mind With Mary we behold it, The Virgin mother kind To show God's love aright, She bore to us a Savior When half spent was the night.

Christmas Vespers has for many years been an important part of Lehigh's distinguished singing tradition. It is a time for rejoicing and remembrance. The candles used in the service are a gift of the Bidlack family in memonJ of their son, Benjamin.
