It’s hard to believe the school year has come to an end! It seems like only yesterday that I first walked through the front doors of Thorndale. Although we are saying goodbye to this school year, staff at Thorndale have already started preparations for next year. School trips have been booked, fieldtrips have been finalized, motivational speakers have been scheduled and we are already building the excitement for the 2014-2015 school year.

Information for September 2014 BUSSING INFORMATION Bussing information will be posted at our school beginning on Wednesday, August 27, 2014. Parents are asked to visit the school to view the pick-up and drop-off time for . See the enclosed bussing newsletter. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL (Tuesday, Sept. 2nd) The first day of school will be a very busy and exciting time. It's important for your child to remember who their teacher is, and to remember where their bus stop is located, and to remember their bus stop location and times. Please help them practise remembering this information before the first day of school. Walk your child to the bus stop, so he or she is familiar with the stop location. We will have extra staff on duty on the first morning of school to help any child who is experiencing difficulty locating their classroom. While we expect that some parents may wish to drive their child to school on the first day, please be reminded that pedestrian safety is a major priority. There is limited parking at our school. If you must drive your child to school, please be patient, careful, and give yourself extra time due to traffic congestion.

KINDERGARTEN ENTRY It's an especially exciting time for all of our kindergarten students, as they will be coming to school all day for the first time! All of our kindergarten students and their parents are asked to attend our kindergarten classrooms on Tuesday, September 2nd, for our annual "Kindergarten Lemonade Social". Parents will need to provide transportation on September 2nd. Kindergarten students will then begin attending school on a staggered-entry system. Your child's kindergarten teacher will inform you of the start date for your child.

PEANUT-FREE SNACKS Thorndale Public School is a "peanut-aware zone", out of concern for allergies occurring in our classrooms. Please keep this in mind when sending lunches and snacks with your child. Also please consider that we are trying to provide children with as balanced a day as possible, which includes healthy and nutritious snacking.

Some examples of healthy "peanut-free" snacks are:

Fruit (apples, oranges, grapes)

Vegetables ( carrots, celery)

Raisins

Cheese and crackers

Yogurt Please pack your child’s lunch and snacks in reusable containers as this reduces the amount of garbage.

Peel board reduces transportation distance eligibility for students in grades 1

Based on feedback from parents and community members, Peel District School Board trustees have approved

a change to reduce the transportation distance eligibility for students in grades 1 from 1.6 km to 1 km. Grade 1

students who live 1 km or more from school will now be able to take the bus to and from school.

Beginning September 2014, the Peel board eligibility distances for transportation will be as follows:

kindergarten to grade 1students – 1 km (previously 1.6 km for grade 1 students)

grades 2 to 4 students – 1.6 km

grades 5 to 6 students – 2 km

grades 7 to 8 students – 3.2 km

grades 9 to 12 students – 3.8 km (previously 4.8 km)

The distances noted above are measured along sidewalks, roadways and paved pedestrian walkways from the

school property to the home property line. Measurements to establish eligible addresses are conducted

exclusively using the geographic information system (GIS) component of the board’s transportation

management software.

How do I know if my child is eligible for transportation?

Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) has a website where you can find out whether your child is

eligible for transportation based on your home address.

After July 1, 2014, visit businfo.stopr.ca, click on "Transportation Eligibility" and enter your

information.

In addition, if your child is eligible for transportation, you can securely access your child’s transportation

information, including bus stop location and pick-up and drop-off times, from businfo.stopr.ca commencing

August 25. Click on “Student Login” and enter the information required. To ensure privacy of information

you will be required to enter the Ontario Education Number (OEN) which can be found on your child’s report

card. For families of students who do not have an OEN and will be attending year 1 kindergarten, you may

contact your child’s school regarding their transportation information during the last week of August.

For more information on transportation policies,

procedures, late buses and cancellations,

please visit www.stopr.ca.
