Did You Know?Lactose intolerance occurs when an individual is unableto fully digest the milk sugar, or lactose, in dairy prod-ucts. Also known as lactase deficiency, lactose intoler-ance is not typically dangerous but it can be veryuncomfortable. Many people, in fact, have low levels oflactase, but most would not know, as there are nonoticeable symptoms or signs. Those who do feelstrange after consuming dairy and feel they might belactose intolerant should know that symptoms such asdiarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, bloating, and gasare some of the signs of lactose intolerance. These signsand symptoms typically appear within 30 minutes totwo hours after consuming dairy. When a person is lac-tose intolerant, that's because the cells lining the smallintestine are not producing lactase, which attaches tomolecules in the food a person eats and breaks theminto two simple sugars -- glucose and galactose -- whichare then absorbed into the bloodstream. However, withinsufficient lactase, food moves into the colonunprocessed, where it then interacts with normal intes-tinal bacteria, an interaction that often results in theaforementioned uncomfortable symptoms.

Recognizing Black Dog SyndromeDogs living in sheltersawait the chance to beadopted by loving families.Black dogs in general tendto be harder to placebecause of people's mis-perceptions about them. These dogs are often thelast to find homes, if theydo at all. The problem is so common, adoption professionals havedubbed it "black dog syndrome."

There are a few reasons people may pass up on owning a black dog.

* Dog breeds, such as dobermans and rottweilers, are dark in color.People may assume that all black dogs tend to be aggressive orprotective. In fact, it is often the way a dog is raised that dictatesits disposition, regardless of the dog's color or breed.

* Another possible explanation for black dog syndrome is thatblack dogs do not photograph well. When individuals searchprint advertisements for shelter dogs or browse online placementsites, black dogs do not show up as expressive as lighter -coloredones.

* Because they do not show up well in film and in photos,Hollywood often chooses lighter dogs over black dogs. This canmake people believe that black dogs are unpopular.

* Black dogs have often been condemned in folklore. People mayhave visions of lurking, hulking black dogs preying on livestock orhaunting shadowy corners. Like black cats, black dogs can seemominous.

* Black is a depressive color, and individuals may transfer theirthoughts of the color onto the animal.

* Human nature is to look at bright, sparkly things. A light dog nextto a black dog may appear more attractive.

* In warmer climates or sporting competitions, black dogs tend tooverheat faster than lighter counterparts. Individuals who areactive may ignore a black dog for this reason.

There are people who do not believe in black dog syndrome.Because black and brown tend to be dominant colors in manybreeds and because many shelter dogs are mixes of breeds, itmakes some sense that there are more black dogs in shelters forthis reason alone. Others say that Labradors, which are often black, are the most popular breed, and this is another reason for theabundance of black dogs in shelters.

However, shelter workers contradict that black dogs often are thelast to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. People are urgedto remember that coat color does not dictate the temperament ofa dog. Individuals shopping around for a new pet should look care-fully at all the dogs available because black dogs are often over-looked. Who knows, an ebony pup may become a child or adult'snew best friend.

Solutions & SubstitutionsBy: Reena Nerbas

Hi Reena, I was asking a clerk in our local store, about cola for cook-ing, and he had never heard of it. Where can I find it? Secondly, what I have found most excellent for mosquitobites is to put a teeny dab of toothpaste on the bite, andyou can forget all about it. It works like a charm, believeme. And, for burns, to hands, or fingers, or whatever, when we are working around the kitchen, I always put myfinger(s) under cold water for a minute, then dab thatwith a towel, to get most of the water off, and then I puton some lavender oil (available in all health stores). Yearsago, two men were working in some kind of lab, and oneof them burnt his hand, and automatically pulled hishand away, and inadvertently put it into a bowl of laven-der oil. It healed right away, with no scarring, or anything.I am loving your book!Sincerely, Gordon

Hi Gordon,Thank-you for the great solutions! With regards to cola, this refers to; No Name, Pepsi, Coca Cola, Diet Cola etc.The combination of carbonic, citric and phosphoric acidscan be used for making; chili, BBQ sauce, brownies, andcooking/marinating meat.

Hi Reena,We moved into a new home. I would like to clean thebasement floor. It is untreated, that is there is no sealanton it. What cleaning solution should I use on it?Darlene

Dear Darlene,Assuming that your basement floor is concrete; mix onehalf cup bleach, one quarter cup baking soda, 2 tbsp.borax and 8 cups warm water. Let sit for 10 mins. Scrubwith club soda. If you are opposed to bleach, you cansubstitute the same amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide. When the floor is clean, seal.

Hi Reena,Heard you on the radio today but I could not get throughbefore the show ended. Root weevil (strawberry I think)have gotten worse inside our house over the years, I kill

about 50-100 a day. We are trying to reduce outsidefoliage and plan to replace flooring (mostly carpet) infuture. Have kids and the weevils are in all rooms, Iwould like some suggestions if possible. House is wellsealed and the attached garage not too bad. I am lookingfor a solution for inside if possible as now that they (wee-vils) are inside, it seems they are here to stay. Thanks in advance. David

Dear David,Strawberry root weevils look like large wood ticks. A sin-gle female can lay up to 400 eggs, and this challengeneeds immediate attention as they sometimes wanderinto houses by mistake as accidental invaders. Householdaerosol insecticides are not very effective for controllingweevils, your best bet is to vacuum them up as soon asyou see them. Secure a plastic bag over the vacuum noz-zle when not in use so that weevils do not escape. If prob-lem persists, contact an exterminator.

Fabulous Tips of the Week:· Secure a button permanently with dental floss; it ismuch stronger than thread and perfect for repairs to out-door items. Because dental floss is resilient but fine, it isan ideal replacement for thread when you are repairingan umbrella, tent or rucksack.

· Keep rabbits from eating your garden by scaring them.Fill mason jars three quarter full with water; add a drop ofdish soap to each jar. Line jars along garden 1-2 feet apartand place on top of foil pie plates. The water reflects thesun off the jar and the foil. The dish soap changes the sur-face tension of the water so that mosquitoes cannot layeggs.

Did You Know?A Rutgers university study found that flowers can createfeelings of instant happiness. With this in mind, usingflowers around the home when entertaining can imme-diately create a sense of warmth and welcome whenguests arrive. It can also set the mood for the event. Gobeyond the flower centerpiece on the dining roomtable. Incorporate flowers into other decorating as well, and don't forget to add a small vase of flowers in thebathroom. Most people are busy balancing family life and careers. This canmake mealtime challenging. Sometimes it seems easier to gothrough the drive-through lane of the nearest fast-food restaurantthan to spend time in the kitchen. But making dinner doesn't haveto be time-consuming or difficult.

Arriving home from work at 6:30 p.m. andthen thinking about making dinner leavesmany people feeling stressed out. It is possi-ble to create healthy meals the entire familywill enjoy with planning and smart time man-agement in the kitchen.

Here are some tips that can make for easiermeals in a snap.

* Mark the calendar. Sure it may seem like apage right out of the school cafeteria opera-tions, but planning at least two weeks ofmeals in advance can alleviate the toughestpart of meal creation -- deciding on themenu. This enables a person to shop for allof the ingredients and stock up the pantryand the refrigerator. Come mealtime, it'ssimply grab and cook.

* Prep in advance. Some people like to spendSunday afternoon pre-cooking items thatwill be used during the week. For example, one can bake chickencutlets that can be used for a variety of meals later on. Or slice anddice items so that the preparatory work is done. Package into indi-vidual baggies or bowls for later use. Sometimes the longest timespent on meals is the prep work.

* Take some shortcuts. Not every meal that is cooked needs to beentirely from scratch. Mix fresh-made elements with store-boughtoptions. For example, serve barbecued flank steak with preparedsalad greens from your grocer's refrigerated section and cornbreadfrom their bakery.

* Consider breakfast foods. Breakfast foods tend to cook faster and

with less prep work than others. One night a week serve pancakes,French toast, omelettes, or Belgian waffles. It's easy and tasty.

* Invest in a slow cooker. Slow cookers cook food on very low heatfor several hours. Many now feature programmable displays so aperson can punch in the cook time and the slow cooker will auto-

matically shut off when done. Individualscan come home after a long day of workand school with an entire meal fully cookedand ready to eat.

* Stir-fry satisfies. Meats and poultry cutinto smaller strips and pieces will cookmuch faster than an entire steak. Pair thiswith favorite flavors, such as ginger andteriyaki and seasonal vegetables (fresh orfrozen) and serve over rice or noodles. There are dozens of stir-fry recipes a personcan create with a little experimentation.

* Have leftover night. One night of the weekcan be set aside for leftovers to clean outthe refrigerator. Simply reheat and serve, letting each member of the family concocta buffet-style meal, featuring a little of thisand a little of that.

* Make-your-own. Foods that involve partic-ipation are enjoyable and often fast. Tacos, fajitas, personal pizzas, nuggets and dipping sauces -- all of these options are quick to makeand eat. Plus, they get the kids involved in meal preparation.

* Pastas a plus. A pot of pasta can be boiled in 7 to 10 minutes. Inroughly the same amount of time, it is possible to put together asauce to top the pasta, whether oil and garlic, tomato or somethingcream-based. Pasta should be the go-to dish when a person is shorton time and needs a hearty meal.

Cooking for the family during the week can be done quickly and easily with organization and a little know-how.
