F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N TWe’ve accomplished a lot this year and yet, there’s more work to be done. I want to personally thank all those members who have expressed their support for the Board and our efforts to proactively address the Clubs future with the new Strategic Initiative. It means so much to the entire Board.

Running the club’s business has always been and will always continue to be a very careful balancing act between fiduciary responsibilities and membership value. Tipping the scales too far one way or the other will result in trouble.

Maintaining that balance was always at the forefront of what we knew was going to be a challenging process to position the club for prosperity in the near and long term. The Board and all of the volunteer committees played an integral role in delivering a solution that was deemed the most equitable. As a reflection of that careful and considerate balancing act, the resulting Strategic Initiative has been met with overwhelming support.

It is now incumbent upon myself and the Board to work with Management to ensure that all members see the most value for your discretionary, entertainment dollars. The “country club experience” is a unique privilege we have all consciously elected to participate in because we desire the amenities and services that go along with the country club lifestyle. It’s not for everyone, but for those of us for which it is, there are expectations that we require to be met. Not the least of which is service.

Increasing service can be an easy way to increase value. The Board and the Management staff strive to continually improve service and to accommodate member needs — to create a culture of “yes”. Of course, this is another balancing act between maintaining policies and rules that enable all members to be treated equitably with the ongoing effort to accommodate individual member requests. 100% satisfaction is unrealistic but that simply means there’s always room for improvement. Successful, service-oriented businesses figure out how to say, “yes” as often as possible without negatively impacting the many for the sake of the few. Saying yes is at the heart of the country club experience and we should always strive to do better.

Continued improvement should be a primary goal for any business. One of the goals of this Board is to find ways to improve membership categories. We have already made improvements to the Limited Golf B category by making it more accessible to the cherished, legacy members who have given so much to the club over the years.

We are now focusing our attention on several other categories including Social and Tennis, looking for ways to improve their value and grow these groups.

Traditionally, the Social membership category has been a place for new members to test out the country club experience and then move into Tennis or Golf memberships. The rate of entry into this category has slowed and we need to identify ways to improve the value while maintaining that careful balance between our fiduciary responsibilities to the clubs business model and the value of the current membership. Lowering standards to increase the bottom line is not a recipe for success.

We need to be open to introducing new membership categories to expand our offerings and create flexibility for a wider variety of circumstances. In short, we need to evolve to meet changing demands to ensure continued success.

This edition of the Chatter finds us in the heat of the summer — a time when all should be enjoying every aspect of the club. I hope to see as many of you over the course of the summer as possible. Please let me, any of the Board or committee volunteers know if there is any way we can help to improve your experience and increase the value of the club for you.

F R O M T H E C L U B H O U S EAs we move forward into 2014, I can’t believe it’s already June. Where does the time go? Every year we reflect back on the time and wonder, “Did I work too much or not enough”? Did I spend enough time with family and friends? Am I leading a well-balanced life? Regardless of these questions we ask ourselves or the answer to these questions you can be certain of one aspect… . You probably spent much of that time at Chartwell. While we all joined Chartwell to enhance our lives based on many reasons, there is no doubt Chartwell is a great escape from the daily chores of life. To know that you can stop by, have a drink, a great meal, talk with some friends, meet a new member, hit some golf balls, go for a swim, or attend diverse events is perhaps the best aspect of all. We can choose to go anywhere to relax and do these things, but we choose Chartwell!

As they say, membership has its privileges. Each and every one of us have access to the clubs amenities / space for those special life events, a baby shower for the child that will someday be on the Chartwell swim team, your daughters sweet 16th birthday party, and the future bride who will be having her wedding reception in the ballroom years later, your company meeting planning the years goals, the 40th birthday party for your wife, even though she still looks younger than 30, or your family reunion. Whatever the reason or the need, business or pleasure, just a phone call or email is all it takes to have our helpful Chartwell staff put together the accommodations to meet and exceed our expectations. Remember, there is no additional charge for the space, as compared to other establishments, so please consider Chartwell for your special events.

For your events in the Chartwell clubhouse, it is nice to incorporate the outside grounds as well. Recently, your house committee added a wonderful new stone patio and Fire Pit between the 18th green and the dining / ball room patios. I would like to thank our ground crew and especially Jimmy Hogan for doing such a great job building the new patio! It was completed Friday June 6th and many members were quick to enjoy it. Be sure to stop by and check it out. It’s perfect for relaxation after a round of golf, tennis or dinner.

Our Clubhouse and kitchen staff has worked hard to provide great dining choices at an affordable price, so whether you are dining in or ordering carry out, check out the daily food specials and appetizers. If you are craving a certain dish Chef Andrew is open to create it for you, just ask! With our great food, comes interesting wine pairing and drink specials, so check these out on the website and email blasts throughout the week. Did you know our wines by the glass are an 8 ounce pour!? That equates to 3 glasses out of a bottle of wine opposed to normal 4 at restaurants and bars. Talk about the Chartwell pour! Also, please be sure to check out our new Home Cook Out Kit. You pick it up and cook it at home.

In the continually changing country club environment, Chartwell has never been more efficient and adaptive to meet and exceed our members’ wishes. I appreciate the membership’s willingness to consider the changing times and helping us all work towards our common goal of Family First! T E N N I S Congratulations to our Director of Tennis, Jamie Peterson and Tennis Professional, Andrew Carlson for their part in the Mid-Atlantic 35 and over Talbert Cup victory last month. The Mid-Atlantic team defeated Eastern Tennis Association 5-0 and defeated Middle States 4-1 in the annual intersectional team competition. Matches were started at Baltimore Country Club and finished at Suburban Club of Baltimore due to weather. The Mid-Atlantic team was captained by Chartwell Director of Tennis Jamie Peterson and was composed of Andrew Carlson, Paul Harsanyi, Micah Zomer, Landon Schaefer, Doug Neagle, and Matt Bilger in addition to Peterson. Andrew Carlson won the clinching match against Middle States in a third set tiebreaker to assure Mid-Atlantic its third cup in six years.

2014 CHARTWELL GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB INVITATIONAL CLASSIC TENNIS TOURNAMENT

AUGUST 4-8 Come out and watch the finest in the Mid-Atlantic Region and throughout the country as they compete for this prestigious title and prize money. Men’s singles and doubles matches will take place each evening throughout the week beginning at 4:00 pm. The Finals will take place on Friday evening. Chit bar and

food will be available for your enjoyment. Chartwell Golf and Country Club and many of our members are proud to sponsor this special week long event and hope you will join us in supporting some truly outstanding tennis! The Classic is completely dependent on donations from the fans. For the first time ever we have teamed up with the Chartwell Foundation so that a portion of the money raised (25%) will go to a charity. We chose TENNIS THANKS THE TROOPS as a part of ThanksUSA which provides financial assistance to military families. We could not host this tournament without the financial support of our members and fans. 2 0 1 4 J U N I O R G O L F P R O G R A M School is out and the 2014 Junior Golf Program is in!! Please join us for yet another exciting season at Chartwell. The program kicks off this Friday, June 20th with our first junior golf day. We are excited to see both new and familiar faces in our program this season. Our junior golf program offers a nice mix of instruction and on course experience for our juniors. Our hope is to get them involved at a young age and encourage them to continue playing after they have completed our program. Junior Golf Days will start with instruction followed by play on the golf course. To see the appropriate starting times, please refer to your child’s classification in the junior golf booklets you received at registration or visit the Chartwell website.

Aside from the instruction and on course play, we are offering 3 tournaments for our juniors this year. The first event is our Junior Golf Opening Day Tournament on Sunday, June 29th. Our 4 person team scramble format is a great way to build camaraderie and teamwork for our junior golfers. Please register on FORETEES under the “events tab” for what promises to be an event your kids will love. We also have our Parent-Child Tournament (15yrs & under) on July 13th with tee times from 1:00-4:30 pm. Please call the golf shop to register. The final event of the year is our Junior Club Championship which culminates the year for our juniors. This event is an individual stroke play event that takes place on Saturday August 9th. Registration opens on FORETEES starting on July 12th.

In addition to our Junior Golf Program, we are offering junior clinics available to all members of the club. The clinics run every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from June 17th-July 31st. Our clinics are broken up by three age classes: All Stars; ages 11-up, Rookies; ages 8-10, and Mini’s; ages 5-7. These sessions are great if you are looking for instruction in a small group atmosphere for your child to enjoy the game. We cover everything from basic fundamentals to golf course etiquette and rules scenarios. Our professional staff takes great pride in seeing our juniors grow to love and play this great. If you are interested please call the golf shop at 410-987-4480 and register your child.

THE Chartwell FOUNDATIONThe Chartwell Foundation was founded in 2006. It was a concept discussed off and on for many years prior to its establishment. Numerous club members embraced the idea of creating a vehicle to give back to the community. While quite a few members worked to support the idea, it was through the efforts primarily of Don Iodice and Don Pette that things moved from concept to reality.

The Foundation is a separate corporate entity, governed by a board made up of Chartwell Golf and Country Club members. It is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Therefore, contributions are tax deductible. Its mission is “to positively impact the community through fund raising efforts and by awarding grants to local non-profit organizations for charitable and educational purposes.”

Over the years more than $500,000 in grants have been awarded by the Foundation; the majority of which were to non-profits right here in the local community. In 2013 alone grants totaling $70,000 were made. Examples of organizations that have received grants include the Severna Park Assistance Network, Partners in Care, The Providence Center, Hospice of the Chesapeake, The Severna Park Community Center and the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company. The foundation also maintains a scholarship fund at Anne Arundel Community College. Each year a graduate of a local high school receives a tuition grant from the fund. The award is based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. The decision is made independently by the college. The foundation is not involved.

Donations to the Foundation come primarily from club members, either through golf tournaments or through the simple act of writing a check. There is no question the Chartwell Foundation, and therefore the members of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club together have had a positive impact on the lives of countless individuals and families here in the community.

This is a great salmon dish. The fish is rubbed with a BBQ spice mix and topped with a wonderful tomato-basil relish. Open a nice Sauvignon Blanc and enjoy the evening on the back porch.

I hope this recipe helps to kick start your grilling season and makes your grill feel useful again!

BBQ Salmon with Tomato Relish

Tomato Relish:6 each roma tomatoes, diced4 each green onions, chopped¼ cup red onion, diced3 tablespoons basil, chopped¼ cup balsamic vinegar½ cup extra virgin olive oil1 tablespoon garlic, choppedto taste salt and black pepper

METHOD:

Combine all ingredients and allow to macerate at room temperature for 1 hour before using.

BBQ Spice Rub:

4 each 6-ounce salmon fillets1 ounce kosher salt2 ounces sugar1 ounce ground cumin1 ounce chili powder1 ounce fresh ground pepper1-½ ounces sweet paprika½ ounce hot paprika

METHOD:

Combine all spices and mix well. Sprinkle evenly over salmon fillets and grill over moderate heat for approximately 4 minutes a side. Remove, top with tomato relish and serve.
