Holmsund project third semester project

Holmsund is a locality situated on the delta of the river Umeälven, 18 kilometers south of Umeå. This used to be an industrial center but the industries are now closing down and has thus become increasingly dependant on Umeå in terms of work, education, activities and shopping.

We spent the thrid semester investigating Holmsund through mapping, design pro-jects and urban planning, giving ideas on how this locality could continue without the industries.

Distance anD speeD- a trip between strömpilen shopping mall in umeå anD holmsunD’s ferry station

Driving from Holmsund to Umeå is something a lot of people living there do on a daily schedule. To experience the distance and tran-sition we as a group went there by car, one of the most common ways of transportation along with the commuter traffic by train and bus. We chose to travel between Strömpilen and Holmsund since it’s the closest shopping area to house a larger grocery store, Sys-tembolaget and other conveniences that Holmsund is lacking.

Once we’ve passed Strömpilen’s shopping area the train tracks stretches out alongside the highway. A bridge with walkway lead-ing to the tracks crosses the way. When driving past beneath the bridge, the landscape change as the train tracks lose visibility and the forest comes closer, framing the landscape. Hidden behind the trees are vaguely visible buildings. As we pass another bridge the landscape is stretches and the speed limit is raised. After a while the train tracks leaps off into another direction, but are soon replaced by a similar element in the landscape: electricity pylons.

Approaching Holmsund the spatial conditions dramatically chang-es, the road narrows down in relation to the allowed speed. The trenches between landscape and road cease to exist as the road more integrates with its surroundings.

When arriving to the seaside of Holmsund the landscape is flat-tened out and opened up until the horizon, obstructed only by shallow islands, flat buildings, ferries at the dock and wind power stations scattered in the peninsula. As we arrive to the end of our drive, we walked around the area which is quite peculiar. When it was time for lunch, we had to consume it inside the car due to the cold weather. The activity and where it took place is depicted beneath.

This aim in this project was to create a dwelling with a homebased activity nearby our investigated area in Holm-sund. This project is about Äppelmus-teriet, a café and apple factory, which takes care of the apples from the valley and the redundant apples from the neigbhourhood areas.

Äpplemusteriet is a cider factory and a café where the apple juice is being sold together with other products made in the Apple Valley and the Holmsund area.

design project in Holmsund

To let the atmosphere of a home based production shine through in the café, the wall between the two is a large bottlestand, flexible and functional. This is where teh apple juice is stored when produced, the day light filters through the bottles giving a warm, yellow light. The light will tell when it is time to make more apple juice.

Äppelmusteriet

The levels of the house makes a gradual transition from the public café and the most private parts of the home. The building follows the landscape.

The café entrance is towards the more public parts of the Communal Apple Garden. Following while the bedrooms are facing a calm backyard. The central part of the house is a concrete shaft, that ties the concrete basement to the upper floors. The thick concrete wall is thus a strong division between the more public and the more private areas of the house, as well as it is carved out to create stairs, bookcases and wardrobes in the wall.

Äppelmusteriet

The density of the wooden beams throughout the house are, as well as the levels, working as a definition of the public and the private. The café faces the pathway and can be opened up to an outdoor space during summertime, where larger gatherings and harvest parties can take place.

This is presently an old industrial area. Keeping the in-dustries that are in use, we planned the Apple garden as communally owned productive garden. This would also be a recreational park, by prolonging an existing path that ends where the industrial area begins, the existing neighbourhoods would get tied closer to the water/Holmsund center.

The map shows the existing buildings in grey, our indivi-dual dwelling projects in orange. The small map shows the area as it is today, the large one is as planned as the Apple Valley.

Communal Apple Garden urban planning project

The aim of this project was to make a strategy which would ameliorate an area based on the mapping we had done. This strategy take care of the many unused apples we saw in the neighbourhood as well as the inhabitants wish for more places to hang out and meet the neighbours.

The aim of this project was to understand how people live in a given area in Holmsund; where they spend their time, what they like to do, what they think about Holmsund.

Herrgårdsgatan is a residential area in the north part of Holmsund. It is situ-ated on a hill with seaview from many houses and a pathway going along the water. Many of the residents in Herrgårdsgatan have little connection to Holmsund. The area itself is rather detached from the center. We met people that mo-ved here to start a family, work in Umeå and spend only evenings and partly weekends in Holmsund. The people that we met told us that they missed the community feeling they had a few decades ago.

We further compared this area to the closest neighbourhood; Sotargatan/Sahlinsvägen. These areas have very little connection. This is an area with a stronger connection to Holmsund, many of the inhabitants grew up in Hol-sund and have friends and family in the neighbourhood. Our strategy to improve the area is to tie the two neighbourhood areas together by extending the existing path along the water, all the way to Sotar-gatan/Sahlinsvägen and create an area in the in-between industrial area; the Apple Valley.

Mapping Herrgårdsgatan Garage studies

By studying garages we got an idea of how people in the Holmsund area spend their time and who they are. This garage belongs to one of the older houses at Herr-gårdsgatan. It is however built in the 1980s, sponsered by the municipality as a bunker. This explains the 70 cen-timeters thick concrete walls. Today the garage works as a storage room, just like many other garages we investigated. The garage contains toys from grown up children, watersport equipment and a small wood workshop.

Mapping Herrgårdsgatan From inside to outside

The relationship between the houses and the road is very different on these two houses above. One has no border, the other uses the levels to get more isolation from the road.

To study the relationship between the in-door spaces facing the road and the road gave understanding of wishes to position themselves towards or against the public. For example was it common to have the more public spaces, i.e. kitchen, facing the road, whereas bedrooms and livingrooms were often put on the more quiet part of the garden.

Palazzetto dello Sport Abstraction: History Workshop

The aim of this workshop was to make an abstraction of a given historical building. Palazzetto dello Sport is a small building, especially when compared to its sur-roundings of tall appartment buildings. This abstraction show the reflections, the shading, that the small Palazzetto would give the tall buildings if the relationship between the two had been the opposite.

Villa WorkshopDesigning modules

The aim of this workshop was to design a holiday home, working with the required spaces as mo-dules. Our concept was to create a home with large open spaces and hideaways.

Inspired by treehuts the bedrooms got tilted ceilings and two levels, building upon the idea of getting to a calm level while going to sleep. The entrance to the room would thus be on the lower level, the upper would only host the bed and windows put eyelevel from the bed.

The kitchen would be the main common area and the first room you enter in the house. From there there are only smaller spaces, hide-outs, like the cooking area, the patio upstairs and be-drooms.

1:1 Brick carpetMaterial Workshop

The task was to use one material and creating something useful in the school area. With bricks we wanted to use the contrast of a defined, hard shape and with soft shapes. Since mortar requires a certain structure to be effective, we tested diffe-rent ways of putting the bricks together in different systems.

The result was built by using metal sticks that were skewered through the bricks. We used the landscape but also the tension from the metal to create the shape of the brick carpet.

Through the brick carpet it became possible to walk all the way down to the river. It also offers seatings and a calm resting place, just in front of the school building.

Morocco Study trip

During two weeks in the se-cond semester we went to Morocco to document and study the architecture, the light and the sounds. We tra-velled around from Marrakech, to the Sahara desert and to the coastal city Essaouira.
