Dear readers,

India is witnessing the emergence of a self sustaining digital learning ecosystem which

has many stakeholders including learners, trainers, technology developers and policy

makers etc. Trainers are an important partner to address in the digital learning

environment as learners are. No doubt the programmes are being designed and developed

keeping in mind the learner capacities, capabilities, interest and relevance. But in the

whole narrative of digital learning, interestingly, trainers have emerged as key creators and deliverers of the

content. Ironically, as it might seem, though learner is the center of the programme, there is emergence of a

'celebrity trainer' who has a reputation, ranking and branding of his own. This might be an added motivation also for

the trainers to invest their skills and energy to become adept in digital deliveries of education.

Now coming to the Indian digital learning environment, we need to invest heavily in training of the trainers. It is a

huge task given massive population of learners. We, at CEC have been planning a series of trainers orientation

workshops in collaboration with our media centres located across the length and breadth of the country. The idea

behind it is to not only introduce them to entirely new digital learning environments but also to enable them to

address various issues in digital learning like to digital familiarity etc. Without a competent taskforce of trainers the

idea of digital education wouldn't fly high. Many more such programmes would be designed and executed by the

CEC to create a balanced and a self sustaining eco-system of digital learning. Because the new learning digital

environment is a complete paradigm shift in the education content generation

and delivery, it will take time to orient the resources and make them comfortable

to the idea of virtual teaching. But we believe the landscape of Indian Higher

Education is being redefined and revitalized so that it is able to nurture the much

needed human resource which is crucial to the development of a nation.

Media & Education

Adoption as a process has been approached by various theorists ranging from rural sociologists to marketers and

campaigners across many disciplines including E. M. Rogers, most influential of them all, in his foundational book

“Diffusion of Innovations.” Teaching for long has been traditionally focused on class room activity performed with

board and chalk. Though in the western world it has changed drastically but in the developing world it is still to set the

ball rolling as it is being used sporadically. It is not due to the unavailability of the infrastructure but also due to the

question of adoption of technology in teaching by an individual or an organization. Rogers has categorized adopters into

5 categories, namely Innovators, Early Adopters, Early Majority, Late Majority and Laggards. Depending upon the

socio-economic and other demographic variables, people can be placed in these categories accordingly. Thus, learners

and instructors may adopt and respond to technology in education differently depending upon various traits.

Teaching and learning are becoming an altogether different systems of interaction and experience. The concept of

digital education has placed the student in the center and teacher is just a facilitator. It is somewhat similar to the 'Death

of Subject' in postmodernism. The whole debate and focus is about students and learning. Teaching revolves and

evolves with a focus on the students.

Cultural and social values are known to make a crucial background for the innovation adoption. Apart from these, there

are also psychological traits of an individual that determine the willingness and readiness to adopt an innovation. Our

education content and delivery mechanism needs an insight of innovation and its successful adoption by all of its

stakeholders like students and learners. Demographically speaking, students from Gen X and Y and even Z are avid fans

and adopters of various technologies and their numerous application be it for social networking or financial or

educational. In fact, the e-commerce revolution in India is being led by them. The role of change agent may have been an

important variable in Roger's thesis of rate of adoption of innovation but in the context of technology adoption in above

demographic categories, change agent doesn't play much role. They, as a category, are innovators and very adept in

technology use.

Similarly, young teachers are proficient and comfortable with technology use compared to previous generation. We

need to take into account these demographic while planning out strategy to address the digital education adoption in

India.

There is a scope to understand the varied adoption process and response to the education technology among learners and

teachers alike. The understanding may help diffuse the education technology uniformly which may ultimately help shift

our education to the digital completely.

Scientists observe many phenomena that cannot be explained by ordinary stellar objects. Therefore, the presence of something in the universe that cannot be seen was conjectured. It was suggested that stars can collapse to such an extent that their mass becomes so high and gravity so great that nothing can escape from it. Even light would be trapped by the intense gravity of this object. These were called black holes. Do they exist?
