Thomas Klitgaard is a pioneer in bridge building and has made unparal le led contr ibut ions in promoting relations between China and the United States for over 30 years.

As a founding director of the San Francisco-Shanghai Sister City Committee, he was among the first persons who went to Shanghai with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, then Mayor, in 1980 to establish the sister-city relationship. In 2011 the Shanghai government presented Klitgaard with the Magnolia Silver Award, the highest honor presented to foreigners. Klitgaard is among first non-Chinese members to serve on the Board of Directors of the Chinese Culture Foundation, and has served as the Chairman of the Board and is currently a Vice-President.

Denn is Wu is a t ra i lb la zer in communi ty bu i ld ing . He has dedicated his career to encouraging professionals to give back and empower the have-nots. In doing so, Dennis has mentored a new generation in philanthropy and community service. His actions have changed lives, opened minds and transformed the community.

Dennis is the Managing Partner and Co-Founder of WuHoover & Co. LLP, serves as the Chair of Recology, and the CFO of the City College Foundation. “Emblems of Ethereal Grace” is the signature of Pat Tseng’s artistic creation. Pat is an innovative artist who has been creating jewelry art for more than four decades. Her work draws on the history of decorative motifs with archaic symbols from the Neolithic period to contemporary geometric forms. Her minimalist designs, suffused with fine jade, reflect her Chinese heritage and modern sensibilities coexisting in harmony. Pat's art has been featured at prominent museums including the Smithsonian, the De Young and Asian Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum, the Museum of Macau, and twice at the Chinese Culture Foundation. As an Art Adv isory Board member, Pat devotes enormous energy to guide the Visual Art Center and has been an invaluable supporter for three decades.

San Francisco is a hotspot for intercultural discovery that celebrates community and pluralism. In our Summer Without Walls, join in exciting activities and become part of a community that speaks from deep wells of culture while engaging in a contemporary dialogue. Many of our activities are supported by San Francisco’s Arts Commission and Grants for the Arts. Earlier this summer, we talked with Tom DeCaigny and Kary Schulman, directors of these two institutions.

Mabel: What is the mission of Grants for the Arts? What do you hope to do?Kary: Grants for the Arts promotes San Francisco by supporting the arts. Ever since 1961 the city has invested part of the hotel tax to arts and cultural activities that provide employment and creative outlets, add neighborhood vitality, and help preserve the city’s many rich cultures. Mabel: How important is it for GFTA to support the community?Kary: It is essential to the health of the arts community that GFTA support the widest possible array of activities in all arts disciplines, of all sizes. We do this by granting ongoing general operating support to nonprofit arts organizations, which our grantees tell us is the most valuable money of all.

Mabel: What are your strategies for achieving cultural equity in San Francisco?Tom: Cultural equity is a value that we take very seriously. The Arts Commission is trying to envision how the community can work on more collaborative projects. The need to make city funding more accessible is also critically important. Mabel: What changes have you seen to the Chinese Culture Center?Kary: The Chinese Culture Center has never been stronger! Artistically they have gone from success to success with brilliant curation in the gallery, introducing innovative programs like the recent Keywords School and the growing and ever-more-popular Chinatown Music Festival! Tom: I love the Chinatown Heritage Walk, Justin’s work with the Central Subway, and how the Chinese Culture Foundation shows the connection between art and community.

Kary Schulman has been director of the Grants for the Arts (GFTA) for over 3 decades. GFTA provides $9.5 million in grants annually. Kary was recognized by the Chinese Culture Foundation in 1992 for her support and advocacy of multicultural art.

Tom DeCaigny, Di rector of Cu l tura l Af fa i r s o f the San Francisco Arts Commission, leads an agency that oversees Cultural Equity funding. Cultural Equity provides $2 mil l ion in grants annually.

Welcome to a “ Summer Without Walls”!

Summer Lee

As the flagship program of the Visual Art Center at the Chinese Culture Foundation, the Xian Rui (Fresharp) Artist Excellence Series has become an adventure in which we join the artist on an exploration of human complexity. After three years of planning, Into the Nearness of Distance is unveiling in multiple locations: the main site at CCF; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as part of BAN7; on the Bridge that connects Chinatown and Financial District; and to-be-determined spaces with audience participation.

It is both an ambitious and vulnerable endeavor for artist Summer Mei Ling Lee, of half Chinese descent and 3.5 generation American immigrant, whose work attempts to connect to her beloved grandmother. Whether we are staring at the monitor of Lee facing the Pacific Ocean on a sunny day, or we are navigating our way in the dark gallery, we might wonder, is this as close as one can get, or as far as one can reach?

Summer received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2011. Her work has been shown at San Francisco, Taipei, and Shanghai.

李美玲展覽：最近的距離舊金山中華文化基金會視覺藝術中心第六屆“鮮銳”傑出藝術家李美玲個展在中心畫廊和芳草地藝術中心（YBCA）同期展出。具有一半華裔血統的第 3.5 代美國華裔的李美玲一直不斷地試圖在作品中與她摯愛的祖母進行靈魂層面上的溝通。這次我們在她的帶領下一起探尋記憶與傳承的複雜。

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Vivian W. C. Chiang who dedicated over 30 years to the Chinese Culture Foundation. Her passion showed in her tireless efforts to enrich the community by organizing many successful programs, using her wit, conviction and multilingual abilities. The Vivian Chiang Memorial Fund has been established by the family. All donations will support intercultural education.

Xu Tan is back again to work on the final phase for Keywords, an experimental art project connecting the internationally renowned artist with community youth. Local artist Justin Hoover will be collaborating with the students to visualize their work in the pop-up gallery on Ross Alley and in a final mural in September.

“The work of the [students] represents the first time that artist Xu Tan has incorporated youth into his Keywords project. The kids also were instructed to go into the community and to do interviews, using their artwork on the walls as a point of departure.” - Sam Whiting, San Francisco Chronicle, July 9

Keywords School

Hong Kong based artist Lam Tung-pang made his solo American debut, the “Curiosity Box” at the Foundation in 2013, and subsequently won the Hong Kong Arts Development Award for Best Visual Artist of the Year. The panelists praised his work, “2013 was a bumper year for Lam. His outstanding achievements earned recognition from important art institutions, both locally and internationally.”

Congrats to XianRui 2012 artist Zheng Chongbin! He has been selected as the solo artist for the new Microsoft Innovation Center in Beijing. Zheng was quoted saying, “Thinking big leads to the best potential, and this is the aim of the CCF’s exhibitions. I strongly believe that the CCF will contribute to defining the area of contemporary art. CCF has tremendous impact upon the artists who participate in their programs.”

The Him Mark Lai educators bring a wealth of personal and professional experience to the job. Among them are past teachers, a police officer, Rec & Park department leader, systems engineers, a non-profit executive, artist, and jewelry designer. Several grew up here in Chinatown, and nearly all continue to volunteer with other cultural and historical organizations including Angel Island and the Maritime Museum.
